Olympian Apologizes For Trying To Win His Ex Girlfriend Back After Winning Bronze Medal

Olympian Apologizes For Trying To Win His Ex Girlfriend Back After Winning Bronze Medal

Some are calling it a grand romantic gesture, others see it as a rude, manipulative distraction: Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid tearfully admitting he was unfaithful to his ex-girlfriend during a post medal interview. Well now Laegreid is now apologizing for stealing the spotlight from his teammate who won gold and for shining the spotlight on his ex, who has now publicly stated, did NOT want this international attention.

Speaker 1: Hey, that folks. It is Thursday, February twelfth, and we have a major update on the story out of the Olympics that every body was buzzing about. The olympian who won a medal and then immediately in his post race interview confessed and apologized for being unfaithful to his ex girlfriend. Well, he has now issued another apology to the same ex girlfriend and with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. I got this right. He's essentially apologizing for the first apology.

00:00:34
Speaker 2: Correct, and he's apologizing to his extual friend and to his teammates.

00:00:38
Speaker 1: A lot of folks, almost his whole country. Is he not?

00:00:41
Speaker 2: Pretty much? Yes, he's on an apology tour after winning a medal. It doesn't make any sense.

00:00:46
Speaker 1: Okay, has this story now taken what kind of a turn? Let's start at the beginning. I think a lot of people have seen this. Now, Norwegian athlete, he is a ski by athlete, gets a bronze medal, post race in view apological confession just out of nowhere, tearfully says I'm sorry, I love you, I want you, blah blah blah. We'll get into exactly what he said. The story then what did you think of it? Because it's taking a turn now, but right then, and what did you see people saying? Were they going, oh, or give them a shot or give them credit? I guess what was the What was your feeling and everybody's feeling.

00:01:22
Speaker 2: Then, initially it's a little shocking because you're expecting someone to be crying tears of joy after just meddling in the Olympics, something you've spent your entire life working towards. So it's bizarre first of all. And then part of me was like, Oh, that's that's actually so interesting something about human nature that even at one of the greatest moments of your life, one of the greatest physical achievements anyone could possibly reach or attain, and you're thinking about an ex girlfriend. And I actually thought that was a really a human moment. So I was like, Wow, that's so relatable, and that's so interesting the power of love.

00:01:55
Speaker 1: That's a good point.

00:01:56
Speaker 2: I really was kind of taken back by that. But I have some really funny things that people wrote. One of the sweeter spokes sports journalists, Yes said that was the strangest metal interview I've ever seen. Put this in the post race interview Hall of Fame, the most bizarre moment of the Olympics just dropped. Yeah, so everybody was just kind of scratching their heads, like, why choose that moment to say that?

00:02:21
Speaker 1: Did you feel it was bizarre? Yeah, something you had signed. Okay, now that he has come back out and issued another apology that we're going to get into and explain, how do you feel about the story now? Because he's essentially apologizing for being a distraction and for putting his ex girlfriend out there and he didn't say her name, but for putting this under that type of scrutiny, has your tone or any feeling about the story change now?

00:02:47
Speaker 2: Yes? I think that was the right thing for him to do. I think he realized it after the fact. I think it was indulgent of him, and maybe he was just being super honest. Maybe he was embarrassed that he was crying and he felt like, you know what, I got to just go ahead and admit what's going on. But he was doing it as a strategy to win her back. I don't think that lands with any of it.

00:03:04
Speaker 1: Was he confessed to that, he admitted that, yes, I got a wander back, and I'd feel bad if I if there was a chance and I didn't shoot my.

00:03:11
Speaker 2: Shop, fine, but that feels controlling and manipulative.

00:03:14
Speaker 1: Woo there it is all right, folks. Let's tell you what we're talking about here. This is sterla Holme Lagrett is his name. He is a Norwegian skier, but he does the biathlon. If you don't know what that is, you have to it seems odd. They ski and then they stop and shoot a rifle. That is what is okay, don't know when those skills come in tandem.

00:03:38
Speaker 2: There must have been some ancient time when this was a way to prove your strength and your ability to take care of your people.

00:03:48
Speaker 1: All right, so fine, it's a cool thing to kind of watch. So he's a Norwegian biathlete. He placed third in his race earlier this week. Now he's twenty eight years old, placed dan pretty young, twenty eight years old. He gets a bronze. He gets off. You've seen this before, folks. They get off their state as soon as the race is over, and somebody, usually from their country will come over and from the press and get something quick. So sure thing, some now Reegian outlet talk to him, robes, tell the folks what he said that got this whole thing started in the first place, and keep in mind a lot of this, he said through tears.

00:04:21
Speaker 2: Yes he did. He had tears in his eyes streaming down his face. There is someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today. Six months ago, I met the love of my life.

00:04:33
Speaker 1: Come on, stop it.

00:04:34
Speaker 2: That's also where I kind of fell off a little. I was like, six months.

00:04:37
Speaker 1: Ago, stop robes. Come on.

00:04:39
Speaker 2: Six months ago, he met the love of his life, the most beautiful, kindest person in the world. Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and was unfaithful. I told her a week ago, and it's been the worst week of my life. I had a gold medal in life, and there's probably a lot of people out there who look at me differently now, but I only have eyes for her. Sports have taken a bit of a back seat these past couple of days. Yeah, I wish I could share this with her. And that is a strange thing to say when you are actually competing at the Olympics, which right on the same week that you say, sports took a bit of a back seat for me. This week when he was competing in the Olympics. But I mean, look, I could all I was looking at it. This as wow, this is the power of relationships in our life. Like it trumps everything. It trumps any sort of gold medal you might be winning, or any sort of achievement you might have. If your love life is out of whack, nothing feels good you.

00:05:34
Speaker 1: That's very good lesson you're teaching us here, Robes, because so many people are wanting to do it's this or that. Take this side. He did the right thing, This is romantic. Others looking at it, you lost her, you screwed up, and blah blah blah, and wanted to dismiss the guy, like there's a side splitting. But sometimes it's just a matter of taking a lesson in what you're seeing in front of us, Robes. That is so such a good point. We see all these stories of all these these athletes and everything that went through. But every time family member in the stands, there's somebody there they love. The first thing they talk about at their speech or their press conference is some family members somebody that draw of. He has a bronze medal at the Olympics, the highlight of his life, quite possibly, and it maybe doesn't feel as good as it should because there's nobody there to hug, there's nobody there to kiss, there's nobody there to shared with.

00:06:27
Speaker 2: Sometimes you don't know what you got until it's gone.

00:06:29
Speaker 1: That is a good, very good point. The draw of human nature. This is that human emotion. So you talked about a little bit. What the world reaction was, he said plenty. Also, I don't want to say he changed his tune, but things started to change a little bit after the metal ceremony and at the press conference to where he was still this is where ropes. He made clear he was trying to get her back.

00:06:50
Speaker 2: Yes, yes, he said, I have nothing to lose. I had a chance at true love, and I screwed up so badly. It's not necessarily forgivable. But if this gives me a tiny chance to tell her how much I love her, I'd rather commit social suicide on live TV just to get that little chance. I'm not ready to give up. I accept the consequences of what I've done. I regret it with all my heart. Maybe I'm dumb as a rock. I'm a member of MENSA, but I still do stupid stuff.

00:07:17
Speaker 1: Oh that was funny, I thought that was funny. So today I don't know if he is a member of MENSAE.

00:07:22
Speaker 2: I actually was like, wait, does he have the proof of that? So today I made the choice to tell the world what I did. So maybe there is a chance that she will see what she really means to me and maybe not. But I don't want to think I didn't try everything to get her back.

00:07:37
Speaker 1: I think roll and here is where and there is so much and right just about relationships that we all experience. But there's something you have spoken on. I don't see as much or understand as much, this idea that it's manipulative where you can see something and someone else thought might think is romantic, where his heart is broken or sympathized. You saw something else happening, and I think that's why he ended up issuing another apology based on I can't even articulate the way you put it, but you saw something in this that was wow wow, Like he was doing something to her in that moment.

00:08:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's trying to control the situation, and he's trying to basically by making this big grand gesture in front of the world. He looks like a guy who's just you know, messed up. And is saying he's sorry and please love me. At his grandest, greatest moment, He's it. I don't like big, grand gestures like that. I would rather a small, intimate note where no one else heard it, no one else saw it. It was just intended for me because it wasn't about a show. It was about actually creating an intimate moment where you can be honest and real and let someone know how much you love them. But to do it with a microphone and a world watching it feels manipulative and controlling.

00:08:50
Speaker 1: And obviously we don't know the guy and not going to indict him for however, it was how his heart was breaking, what he was feeling, and it happened in the moment, whatever it may be. But it's it's so interesting how we all watch these things and you immediately read or something stood out to you that I don't think I necessarily would have thought about. But his apology now Robes, and it's taking on a different tone because he's getting I mean, he's getting ripped in some circles, and in particular we're going to talk about the ex girlfriend, but Robes, his teammate won the damn gold medal. Why are we talking about your bullshit?

00:09:25
Speaker 2: Yes? And you know what, I didn't even think about that. But when he now put out this new apology to not only his ex girlfriend we'll get into that, but also to his teammate, that hit for me. I thought, you know what, that wasn't fair, because now the story is about the third place, the bronze medalist's ex girlfriend, and no one's talking about the gold medalist, because this story was so out of left field and captured the attention of everyone in that moment, and so his teammate didn't get maybe all the glory he would have got otherwise.

00:10:00
Speaker 1: So still in the press converse late when they have them sitting up their own podium as a team thing, I mean, he even, I mean almost rudely. I guess he was making a joke. His teammate was answering, and he said, oh yeah, I didn't mean to take the attention, And even while his teammate was answering, he was interrupting, almost still with his own thing. Again, I want to leave room for this guy being heartbroken. We've all done some stupid stuff in love and heartbroken and whatever it may be. But right now, the tone of a lot of this robes is about wow, you did your teammates like that?

00:10:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, and so he does have a new apology out. He said, I deeply regret that I brought up this personal story on what was supposed to be a day of celebration for Norwegian Norwegian biathlon. I am not quite myself these days, and I am not thinking clearly. My apologies go to Johann Alloff as his teammate was Johan Oloff. What a great Norwegian name, Johan Oloff, who deserved all the attention after winning the goal.

00:11:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, he needed to say that that came out. I think they're Olympic committee in Norway. But it's done now, right, It's already out there, It's already happened. I'm not sure. I know a lot of coverage. I didn't look at it as closely, but mainstream coverage of this. I know you read a lot of comments online and wasn't I but was it being read as something funny or cute or heartachey or some you know what this running me of? And you would have brought this up before me some rom com set up, right, This is exactly what you'd see in ron.

00:11:33
Speaker 2: It's like a script out of a movie, right, except for the movie would end with the girlfriends running into his arms. She was there all along. She just didn't want him to know she was actually in this state, you know whatever. Yes, that would be the happy ending with the bow on top.

00:11:47
Speaker 1: However, folks, that is not it appears how this story is going to end. Yes, we have heard from the ex girlfriend. Sounds like she ain't trying to hear shit.

00:12:06
Speaker 2: Welcome back everyone to Amy and TJ. Where we are talking about I didn't even say what you So we put out episodes. We kind of order how we want to talk about things and what we want to talk about, and we give them titles. You called this naughty Norwegian. That just made me laugh. It was say you're like his name was too hard to say. But Sterla. Sterla has apologized and apologized again now for apologizing in the first place to his girlfriend on international television after he won the bronze, stealing the spotlight so to speak, from his teammate who won the gold, and trying to win back his girlfriend's affection. So he had to apologize again for the apology, first to his teammate, but he also to his ex girlfriend. Then said The apology also goes to my ex girlfriend who involuntarily ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well. He may not have said her name, but it doesn't take long for intrepid journalist to put two and two together. And yes, the girlfriend was found by a tabloid and she did end up speaking up and speaking out about her ex boyfriend's very public display of please take me back.

00:13:15
Speaker 1: This seemed classy to me. It seemed classica, and her name was not put out there. But she said this to the outlet quote it is hard to forgive him, even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world. She should never have to make a comment about this, this Groves. This is when they mentioned I think I immediately thought of the ex girlfriend when he did it, I immediately thought oof, So on a stage like this and the social media these days, now she's going to be under spotlight. That's tough. I did not immediately think about his teammates, and when I certainly want is bad. When I put the two together, I'm like, what a shame. And he's getting the attention and even some positive attention. But those two groups, right, the ex girlfriend and her family and friends and the teammates really got screwed.

00:14:03
Speaker 2: Yep, agreed, really got screwed and he didn't think it through. I don't think he was not intending to do harm, but it still caused harm, and so it's good that he apologized again. And the girlfriend went on to say this, which is what really brought it home. I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it. That's interesting, she said. We have had contact and he is aware of my opinions on this. I'm sure she let her opinions be very well known about his public may I.

00:14:36
Speaker 1: Call I wondered if this was somewhere lost in translation between Norwegian and English. Maybe it wasn't at all, because that seems perfectly like political talk, like she nailed the language. It's classy. It's very he is aware of my opinions on that. Without giving too much detail. She was giving him more grace than he seemed to have given her. Yes, I thought that was really that was my favorite line.

00:15:02
Speaker 2: You know what, And it's funny you and I spent some time in Sweden. I spent a little bit of time in Norway. That is so Norwegian of hert like, it's just it's funny. They have this dry, this dry way of delivering line, so they aren't rude, but they just but you know how she feels without her actually having to say how she feels. It's great. And then she went on to say to my family and friends who have embraced me and supported me during this time, also to everyone else who has thought of me and sympathized without knowing who I am, that's pretty cool. Wow, I don't think he's getting her back.

00:15:32
Speaker 1: I like this late, and you know, what is anybody rooting for that? Necessarily we don't know the background. When you brought this story to me, you were very excited about it, and you told me all this and we got to do the I sat down read it for a little while, and the first thing I said to you was six months.

00:15:49
Speaker 2: I know, because I was thinking the love of his life. Look love at first, sich you can in one week, you can when you know you know. But apparently he didn't know three months in. And it's interesting that he chose. I also thought this, Why did he tell her the week before he left for the Olympics that timing is everything? Maybe maybe wait until all of this stuff is done and over. I'm so curious why he chose to do that.

00:16:18
Speaker 1: Then there's never a wrong time to do the right thing.

00:16:21
Speaker 2: I know what.

00:16:21
Speaker 1: Okay, maybe he was delayed in telling her, maybe, but you don't want robes Still I'm going back to what you said. Even if he needs to get it off his heart, I'll use that word. It's still it was for him. It still was something he needed to go to the Olympics, maybe to have his nails.

00:16:42
Speaker 2: That is such a good que I mean.

00:16:43
Speaker 1: He didn't do that for her. He had three months to do so why choose? Then? We can't we assume as well her bags were packed. Can't we assume as well that she had been planning to go there to be with him at the Olympics. Can't we assume that? Why? I don't know it's the other woman in an athlete.

00:17:00
Speaker 2: I'm just throwing h I don't know the other person.

00:17:03
Speaker 1: Saying to you that. Why in the week ahead?

00:17:06
Speaker 2: You know what, I had not thought about that. But therapists will tell you a lot of people will say when they go and admit that they did something, it's for you. It's for you to remove guilt, that you can be free now you don't have to feel guilty or bad. And that could have That could absolutely way an athlete done. Any sort of mental disruption like that could be the difference between winning and completely losing, and especially when you're skiing, and yeah, you need to be mentally sharp. And he probably my guess is thought, Oh, I'll tell her we'll have this heart to heart moment. I will feel free of guilt. We'll be together, and now I'll be able to race and everything will be good. And she broke up with him, and he wasn't expecting that. He wasn't anticipating that. That was the wrinkle in his plan.

00:17:53
Speaker 1: And obviously we don't know. We're not speculating about a crime here. So I don't feel as bad. But you're looking for reasons you're looking for Look, we're always trying to understand human relationship. We're always trying to figure this out. And to think a guy's about to have the greatest or the biggest event in his life. He has the woman who is the woman that he wants to be with in his life, and now how do you make those two things go together when you have this thing weighing you down. Maybe it was too much, and maybe that's why I always people are not meant to be dismissed because of the mistakes they make. Don't know what these circumstances were and whatever. But he confess to it, and fine, she's not dismissing him. She just doesn't want to be in a relationship with him. Doesn't mean he has to be dismissed from his team, from his country for anything else. I want to bronze for his country. But we can take a look at this robes. It is so incredible to think that the only thing that mattered to this guy who's screwed up in that moment. Not to say he deserved to have her there, but it hurts him not like this. Still, yeah, I need something. He had no one to go put around him, and certainly that's punishment in addition to the other one. But man, it's he did.

00:19:04
Speaker 2: That girl wrong with yes, but yes, and he did and he is paying the consequences for it. But this is to me a story that just reflects the power of love. When it's gone, nothing else matters. It's kind of like your health. You know, you might take it for granted, but when it's gone. And maybe that's what happened three months into his relationship. But when you see what you've lost, that's when the perspective hits you like a ton of bricks. And no matter what you're going through, the ups and the downs, if you have lost love, it's everything.

00:19:38
Speaker 1: What another in a long line of I guess robes. Just in the history of the Olympics, we get these odd sport adjacent stories. This is another one. I'm fascinated by it. Who knows if there's anything else to come out of this, but he says he wants to be back with her. She doesn't sound like there's a chance.

00:19:58
Speaker 2: In hell, it doesn't seem like that's the case. But we will of course stay up on this story. If there are any new developments, we'll be on top of it for you. And of course we've been having fun watching the Olympics. Hope you all have two but we will have plenty more stories where that came from, hopefully, because the Olympics usually never fails to deliver entertainment along with the sports and without everyone. Thank you for watching or for watching us listen to me, Thank you for listening to us. I'm Amy Roebuck alongside TJ. Holmes. We will talk to you soon.
