New York City Prepares For America’s “Royal” Wedding: Taylor And Travis

New York City Prepares For America’s “Royal” Wedding: Taylor And Travis

Starting tonight, the festivities begin for the biggest wedding in recent American history… or so we’re told. While there has been no official confirmation from either the Grammy winning pop star or her Super Bowl winning groom, every single news organization in the country has been camped outside the world’s most famous arena trying to put all the pieces of this matrimonial puzzle together. The New York Times alone admits it has at least 2 dozen reporters assigned to the story! We’ve got all the latest reporting on what’s rumored to be a 100 person rehearsal dinner tonight, and a thousand plus invite-only, star-studded wedding celebration Friday night.

00:00:02
Speaker 1: Hey, there, folks, it is Thursday, July second. You want to know how big of a deal it is that this wedding is taking place at MSG Wait till you hear how many reporters the New York Times has a signed to it. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. I was guess saying, I was thinking, maybe you weren't reading that correctly.

00:00:21
Speaker 2: I was reading it correctly, not the New York Times. This gives you just a little bit of perspective on what the Travis Kelsey Taylor Swift wedding must mean to Americans, because The New York Times put out an article today saying they were describing how and why they're covering the wedding, and they said, about two dozen reporters and editors from their desks are leading the New York Times coverage of the anticipated wedding of Taylor and Travis twenty four give or take a few reporters.

00:01:03
Speaker 1: But you said they explained how many they had and why was What was the New York Times answer to why they commit so many resources to a celebrity wedding.

00:01:17
Speaker 2: She is arguably the biggest pop star in the world.

00:01:24
Speaker 1: We might end up, calling her the biggest pop star of the world has ever known before all this said and done, and that is it Robes. This is a royal wedding because of her. If Travis Kelsey were marrying anybody else, I'm not even saying she's a waitress down to Chili's, I'm saying he was marrying another big celebrity this week, wouldn't even be thinking about this. She could be marrying anybody and this would be happening.

00:01:50
Speaker 2: Correct, it's her.

00:01:51
Speaker 1: It's all about my goodness, this woman is something.

00:01:54
Speaker 2: It's about her, and it's about where she chose to have the wedding. So they said some readers might question the news value of dedicating so many people, so many resources, because, by the way, they went on to say, it's actually more than twenty four if you actually count all the other people who are doing just smaller roles. So they have almost a small like a local newsroom staff dedicated completely to covering this wedding. And they said, because this story goes beyond just Taylor and Travis, it's also there's public interest in reporting this wedding because of the security logistics, the city planning, the fan presence. That's expected to show up outside of Madison Square Garden and just how much this is all costing is a spectacle beyond anything we have ever really seen in this country. I would ask anyone to come up with another wedding that has this much public interest that is going to be set in the most public of places.

00:02:57
Speaker 1: Oh, that doesn't happen. It's the closest we would get, is JFK. Junior? Right? Is this the closest we've had to a wedding of this type. We've had big celebrities get Mary Mehal, even Jay Z and Beyonce got married. Those are two big stars, but it was not this. And I can't remember where they had it. Where she's having I guess Robes is a big deal. She was off in a resort somewhere or a private spot where people can get to. But she chose to have this in the you know what, Robes. This is the center of the universe. It sounds arrogant, but that's what we call ourselves up here in New York.

00:03:31
Speaker 2: That is absolutely true. And it's so interesting. We've had this conversation you and I about how she's choosing to have her wedding in the center of the universe in a small square footage area that houses nine million people. But it's a place where a lot of people. If you want to have a thousand people come to your wedding, everybody can get to New York City from wherever they're coming from. And where else could you have a wedding with the privacy that Madison Square Garden is going to afford hern in the middle of Manhattan.

00:04:02
Speaker 1: It's a take a look at the pictures, folks, when you get a chance. It's just an upside down bowl, is what Madison Square Garden is. There are no windows there, Nobody can peek, you can't fly a drone over top, you can't climb to the top of the building even try to get a shot in there. Everybody who enters an exit can do so in a tunnel underground and never have to breathe New York City air and never have to be seen on the street roll. As far as security goes, this is perfect.

00:04:31
Speaker 2: It really is. And they'll be able and we've been seeing like they believe me. Every news outlet you can imagine is parked outside of Madison Square Garden right now, and they are taking video and they are taking photos and they are describing what they're seeing being loaded into Madison Square Garden. I've seen reports of a gazebo going in, trees going in, a lot of them have these black tarps over the contents of what they're voting into Madison Square Garden. But reporters are peeking through and trying to see what's being brought in. What's the theme, what's the decor? Everyone wants to know.

00:05:11
Speaker 1: Black Tie is what the report is right now?

00:05:15
Speaker 2: That makes sense?

00:05:16
Speaker 1: Is that is what it's going to look like to as we recording this. Yes, here we are on Thursday, July second, and because we sit there there apparently just a few hours from festivity skins pretty cool.

00:05:27
Speaker 2: The rehearsal dinner is reportedly happening tonight, a one hundred person rehearsal dinner that will take place, yes at Madison Square Garden this evening. So can you imagine we don't have a time on when that might be, I mean early evening, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere near Madison Square Garden. Everyone is going to be trying to sneak a peak as to who is showing up, who is arriving, and how long it's going to last. I mean, everyone is looking for any detail.

00:05:58
Speaker 1: You know what you were talking about. I mean, the Knicks just got done winning a championship, and I guess it was Game three and four that were in the garden robes and though that was the first time they hosted an NBA Finals game since whatever it was, nineteen seventy three, but robes we talked about that might have been the biggest celebrity room in the world at the time. At the Knicks game, everybody was their courtside ropes. Taylor Swift is about to blow the roof off that guest list. Literally, this will be I don't know what other collection of superstars that can come together the way she's about to bring folks together.

00:06:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, and so who wouldn't want to know who's inside, what's happening inside, what it looks like inside, Because yes, tonight is the rehearsal dinner and reportedly tomorrow is the one thousand person wedding celebration. There have been a lot of people trying to guess whether or not Travis and Taylor will get married officially somewhere else, and that the reception will take place in Madison Square. Garden, but there are others reporting the whole thing is going to happen right there on the floor the main stage. They'll exchange vows and then the party will begin well into four am into Saturday morning. A lot of people are saying that is what I guess. They look for certain permits or how long employees are expected to be there for. But we've seen increased security. There are police everywhere. There are reporters here in New York. I don't know if everyone else wherever you are in the country, we have our local reporters, and at every newscast you got a reporter outside of MSG giving you the latest.

00:07:44
Speaker 1: Oyah, and the latest is at all this we're talking about. There is nothing officially on the record, Nope, nobody from the Kelsey Swift camp has said a single word confirming anything is happening anywhere.

00:08:01
Speaker 2: But you know what, this is how she has rolled. She has easter egged her way through album releases, where they'll just be something placed or a lyric in a song, or something she'll say, or an obscure social media post. So she does like to drop little hints, so everyone is trying to figure out what she may have said. Or alluded to or given any kind of hint about where her wedding might be and what it might look like.

00:08:29
Speaker 1: I air on the side that she would. I would put money on it. She's going to do something for her fans. I think they really appreciate that, and it's going to be done perfectly.

00:08:38
Speaker 2: You and I were actually saying, what if. Obviously I'm sure this isn't gonna happen, it would be way too crazy. But I was just thinking, wouldn't it be so cool? The way you had watch parties outside of MSG For the Knicks, they have big screens they set up and there are already screens around the garden. If they just broadcast the wedding, it would be very much like a royal wedding. That is what happens. I mean, we all, I mean I watched William and Kate get married. Of course, everybody wanted to see Megan and Harry get married. We have nothing like that here truly, So if there were to be any kind of live streaming, oh my good god.

00:09:18
Speaker 1: I wouldn't put as much money on that, but I would put money on that. I think she would. I wouldn't be surprised if moments before her ceremony is supposed to start, she sends out a social media link and say be a part because she gets how big of a deal she is and there's limited privacy, and she gets what she owes to her fans, and she gets she is where she is because we're fans and not just fans, but they.

00:09:45
Speaker 2: Are craziest, they're the swiftiest.

00:09:48
Speaker 1: There are other level I think she's going to give them something. Robes. I really think she's been on a picture.

00:09:54
Speaker 2: She has always been. That's been a huge part of her her love that she gives back to her fans. She really like. There are certain artists that get it. I think Lady Gaga is among them. There are just certain artists who understand they have a powerful, rabid fan base. And I don't think there's one bigger than Swifties. So I also think she'll give them and buy product us something to give us a little window into this wedding. And in terms of a window, The New York Times, among others, they it's funny how much they have been into this. They have done constant reporting.

00:10:34
Speaker 1: They got one hundred and twenty people to sign to the story. They better get something.

00:10:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, So they they put this out from what they saw. This was correct. Yesterday they saw this, Yeah, they said. Semi trucks and forklifts unloaded heavy cargo, some of it the size of a small car, wrapped in dark plastic, including objects that appear to be trees. Wooden boxes labeled trees were also visible. One of the forklift drivers, I love the little nugget or a T shirt that said Taylor Swift Carpenters. When asked directly by a reporter if that was related to his job, the man said, I plead the fifth.

00:11:11
Speaker 1: Because I want to keep my job.

00:11:12
Speaker 2: That's cute. I am very impressed, though, Yes, little details and they're more rumors, they're not confirmed. Details have leaked out, But thinking about just how big of an operation this is, how many people have had to be employed to pull this off, how many people are on the guest list, I'm amazed. Actually more hasn't come out because there are always always leaks.

00:11:35
Speaker 1: Who's going to handle this better than anybody? Taylor Swift, I mean, and it's being handled beautifully. I think we're beyond the point of thinking this is an elaborate ruse, so we do believe this is going to happen. At this point, I am curious Ropes to see how what the city does, how the city handles it. What if Roles, we have a right if the rehearsal dinner happens tonight and that gets confirmation, everybody's gonna know, Okay, the wedding is actually happening. Is there going to be a Swifty Mecca now situation to where they all descend?

00:12:09
Speaker 2: I would think so.

00:12:09
Speaker 1: I would think so.

00:12:10
Speaker 2: I think people are already probably coming to New York City at a time where it's yes everyone, the fourth of July. It's Fleet week, we have World Cup games being played there, and it's summer vacation time. There is a massive influx of tourists and degrees and it is a heat wave. Whoa you know what I bet Taylor Swift is glad about right now. She didn't decide to have an outdoor wedding anywhere in this country because it is hot no matter where you are. We walked out this morning we have a little balcony at four o'clock in the morning. It felt like ninety two degrees here. I have never felt it this steamy, I'll be honest, that early in the morning Ebba and so yes, thank goodness, it will be in a climate controlled arena.

00:12:58
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, this is I am getting to the point I am running out of I am shifting to the point of Okay, let her have her wedding like it's fun and the buzz is fun and the city has been fun. But now I'm like, Okay, stop digging, let her have her wedding and let her tell us what she wants to I'm getting I'm transitioning to just her not being a superstar, on her just being a bride.

00:13:26
Speaker 2: Oh well she is, yeah, and she is a bride. He's probably nervous and hoping everything goes right and nothing goes wrong. I mean, the pressure for that is pretty significant. I also like how New York City is wrapping their arms around her in a sense and having some fun with it. May Or Mom Donnie even said, when asked about this, We're fully prepared. There isn't anything to share beyond that. So obviously I would imagine he has been clued into everything. And the police commissioner even said, I would be remiss not to mention an event that we are tracked Madison Square Garden on Friday night.

00:14:02
Speaker 1: That's that's fun. That's good language.

00:14:04
Speaker 2: That's fun.

00:14:05
Speaker 1: I like Thatsha and she's not generally known here for personality in New York. God love it well.

00:14:11
Speaker 2: Normally when she gets press conferences, they're on very tough, unfortunate stories. So this is a fun one to be able to comment on with your no comment.

00:14:20
Speaker 1: That's that's yeah. And it this is a really it's a special time in New York robes. It feels that way, and we feel alive and hopeful and optimistic. There's energy, there's love even robes with all the foreign fans that we have here for the World Cup. Having the World Cup here, the final is in New York, that's amazing. The Knicks just won the damn championship at Madison Square Garden and now the world's eyes are going to be on this city and in one particular building that we are most proud of that we just had one of our proudest moments in decades and NBA championship and we get this. There's just this buzz, bro, It's like we are New York is back. It's hot, We're hot, and just this is the place to be right now. It's just some cool We're on a good streak.

00:15:13
Speaker 2: Here we are, and it's so cool to be around all of that fun and hopefulness and yes, love, TJ and I decided to take a drive around MSG to see what we could see. When we come back, we'll tell you all about it and welcome back everyone. We are. This is the I love when we get to talk about love, and we are talking about Taylor and Travis getting married at Madison Square Garden. First they've got the rehearsal dinner tonight, then they've got the big wedding on Friday, so we're told. But we decided to hop in the car and look, we're used to New York City traffic. We're New Yorkers. We've been here for a I mean, over two decades. We're used to what it's like to be in a congested area of town, in midtown, and certainly the area around Madison Square Garden is notorious for it. But my god, it was worse than usual.

00:16:14
Speaker 1: It was bad. Don't go anywhere near god, Madison Square Garden. We don't have a good handle. I haven't seen a confirmed which street possibly are going to be closed as weekend.

00:16:24
Speaker 2: Yes, so anyone familiar with the city Madison Square Garden and basically takes up a space between seventh and eighth Avenues, and on either side of it there's thirty first Street and then there's thirty third Street, and so we don't know. We have been told that there will be some, if not just maybe one street closures around Madison Square Garden during the time these events are taking place, but without any street closures. You and I I think it took us. I should have timed it, but I do believe it took around twenty minutes to just go around Madison Square Guard. We're talking about a block, a block and a block, so three blocks. It took us almost a half an hour. And that was before street closures. But we started to see members of the media setting up their live trucks.

00:17:15
Speaker 1: We start to Lucky Lose Man, a lot of people coming by with selfie sticks and just want to be a part.

00:17:20
Speaker 2: Lucky Lose Yes or basically influencers or citizen journalists. But people were setting up their selfie sticks and they were reporting from there for their live stream. And then we did see a bunch of party trucks lined up on thirty third so look and yes, there are things being loaded in. There's no question a massive event is taking place. There's no question. I believe at this point that Taylor Swift is the person who has rented out the space. So I just it's and just all the cheeky responses from all the officials who have to be in the know about what's happening, it's all basically a full confirmation that what we think is got to happen is going to happen tonight and tomorrow night.

00:18:04
Speaker 1: But it's fun, it is. It's just it's fun. I just I hope it doesn't go too crazy. If anybody can handle this and press and how information gets out, it's it's obviously her and her camp. But I just I hope people aren't trying to sneak into the arena. I hope there's not somebody sleeping in the arena now who's been there for two weeks. Hide Now you started.

00:18:26
Speaker 2: Thinking about all the things people might do to try to get into the wedding without an invite, because.

00:18:32
Speaker 1: It well, how much is that picture going to be worth? I just hope she doesn't get violated. Well, it's your wedding day in that type of way. I just I don't know a photographers, would they get respect that if a photographer had an opportunity to get in there, would they take it to sneak in?

00:18:48
Speaker 2: And I don't know, do you just okay, come on, you just let's answer our own question there. We have absolutely know there are certain folks always who would do anything to sell a photo. Period. Yes, I think a lot of news organizations would be respectful, but there are plenty of freelancers out there who need that payday and will do just about anything to get a photo. Now, as we were just basically thinking, wouldn't it be nice if Taylor shared some of the visuals or some of the moments with her fans. If she does that, she takes the wind out of anyone's sails, and she knows that more than anyone. You release your own photos, you release your own videos, And now the value of that shot, that photograph vastly diminishes because she's she's decided what's being put out there, what's being disseminated.

00:19:37
Speaker 1: She's going to handle this perfectly, and she's going to be beautiful. It's gonna be perfect. It's going to be just perfect. Every move she makes is perfect, and this is her most important day. Of her life. Yes, it's going to be perfect.

00:19:53
Speaker 2: Yes, And we're told we know that everyone who was invited had to sign an NDA and there are no self books that will be allowed in MSG unless.

00:20:02
Speaker 1: We standard practice at these events.

00:20:05
Speaker 2: At least an event like this one. And again that's about how you can now control what's being put out. I kept wondering though, like, sure, they've got their best friends and all of that coming, but all the plus ones can you trust all the plus ones? Do you? That's what makes me give plus one you unless you know the plus your rule would be unless I know the plus one, you are not coming. And that might be the case for someone like this.

00:20:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, everybody, you're not getting a RANDO as a plus one at my wedding.

00:20:37
Speaker 2: Yeah. And we don't have any clear now. I haven't seen a lot of guest list predictions other than that Stevie Nicks might be performing. But I must say we were coming back and we were going by the Four Seasons in Tribeca and there was a huge crowd and some big black SUVs and everyone was trying to get a picture, and all I could think was, obviously, that's a celebrity guest for Taylor and Travis's wedding, coming into town and staying at the Four Seasons.

00:21:04
Speaker 1: You know what I was thinking, what I wonder what soccer players think.

00:21:09
Speaker 2: Yep, you're right at this point, it could be either or That's the fun.

00:21:12
Speaker 1: Part of New York right now. You don't know what it is and what they're attached to because we just got so much cool stuff going on. It is just a it is bro It is a really fun time. The fourth of July this week, we're gonna have all those service members in town and it's just a fun time.

00:21:27
Speaker 2: It is, and so well, just prematurely a little congratulations to the happy couple and we can't wait to hear all about it. But until then, thank you all for listening to us. I'm Amy Robock alongside TJ. Holmes. We'll talk to you soon.
