NEW Overnight: Today Show Host's Mom Abducted, Sheriff Now Says

RSS Feed Authorities are pleading with the public for help in finding 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. She was last seen late Saturday at her Arizona home. After initially investigating the case as a "missing, vulnerable adult," the sheriff now says there is a crime scene at her home and he believes she was abducted. He also said they haven't dismissed the theory that her disappearance is connected to her daughter, Today Show co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie.

This was Saturday night, the last time anybody saw her, and she didn't show up for church on Sunday, and that's when calls of concerns started coming in and police were called about a missing person. Now missing person immediately and pretty quickly, Like you said, Robes went from missing person to a crime. Now they're not just out there with volunteers and search dogs and drones walking through feels randomly like they were. This was not a dementia situation. He has from this first, the outset. He wants everybody to understand, this woman is sharp as she can be. He keeps using the quote sharp attack, keeps using that saint once. She did not wander off. This is not a situation. And Robes, they're saying, the family is telling us just how limited she is in mobility. She it's virtually impossible for her to just have walked out on her own.

So that and look it helps in the investigation to know you can rule something completely out, and they have ruled that she left on her own volition, completely out.

It's hard to get our heads around with the limited information we have, and police obviously keep details close to the vest. What was left behind that led you all so quickly to determine that a crime has happened and that she has been abducted. They didn't give those details. We understand that's pretty typical in a lot of police investigations. They don't want to show their hand because they're always thinking ahead to prosecuting whoever is responsible for taking Savannah's mom.

We've seen cases where folks are kidnapped and taken directly to ATMs to start taking money out.

Speaker 3: It's interesting, though, yes, because you'd think when I was just imagining that if you take someone to an ATM, if you take someone anywhere in your vehicle and you are getting you're trying to get something from them, you would think money. There has to be some motivation behind this subduction. There are cameras everywhere, and that's why we're hearing from police asking neighbors, everyone, anyone to show and look at their ring cameras, to go check their surveillance footage to see if they may have inadvertently picked up something that could put police on the trail of where Nancy Guthrie may be. But right now it seems like they don't have anything.

If those cameras were working and rolling and recording, they'll see how she left her home, whether it was on foot with someone in a vehicle.

He was putting out a warning basically to who ever took Nancy Guthrie, if she dies on your watch because she didn't have access to this medication that she needs, you will be charged with homicide or you will be looking at homicide charges.

We did hear messages from NBC News, message from the Guthrie family yesterday as well as Savannah. But then we got an updated message from Savannah Guthrie last night. Who I cannot I keep putting myself in Savannah's shoes and imagining what this family must be going through to not know where their mom is, what she is going through, and how she may be feeling, how she is doing right now.

They know what was in there, they know what to be concerned about, and they know how much hope they should can have right now for her safe return. But we did hear from the family yesterday, I guess some basic stuff, thank you for your thoughts and your prayers kind of a thing. And they were absolutely blasting out the number. If you see anything, send the information to this phone number to the police. But then we heard from Savannah again yesterday. This was a fairly extended or a longer Instagram post, and I think the picture just said prayer or pray or something.

Speaker 3: Yeah, some image and look, Savannah is of deep faith, and she's often and publicly credited her mother for that faith, thanking her for bringing Jesus and God into her life. And this post was in that same vein. This is what Savannah put out late yesterday on Instagram.

As those Olympians walk into the arena, you have to be able to speak on your feet about just about everyone. So the amount of preparation and time. We did hear messages from NBC News, message from the Guthrie family yesterday as well as Savannah. But then we got an updated message from Savannah Guthrie last night. Speaker 2: We are beyond forty eight hours now since the last time Savannah Guthrie's mom, Nancy Guthrie, was seen known to be seen on Saturday night. Forty eight hours, I said, But Robes, they said, twenty four hours. She has to have this daily medication or its life threatening.

Speaker 3: She's eighty four years old. She has mobility issues, nothing cognitive. She as sharp as attack, as we pointed out, we've head multiple times from the sheriff. But she does have physical limitations at eighty four, and she needs her medicine. And this is deeply concerning for her fa family. Who I cannot I keep putting myself in Savannah's shoes and imagining what this family must be going through to not know where their mom is, what she is going through, and how she may be feeling, how she is doing right now.

Speaker 2: And they know, obviously more than we do, what their concerns are. They know what that house looked like. They know what was in there, they know what to be concerned about, and they know how much hope they should can have right now for her safe return. But we did hear from the family yesterday, I guess some basic stuff, thank you for your thoughts and your prayers kind of a thing. And they were absolutely blasting out the number. If you see anything, send the information to this phone number to the police. But then we heard from Savannah again yesterday. This was a fairly extended or a longer Instagram post, and I think the picture just said prayer or pray or something.

Speaker 3: Yeah, some image and look, Savannah is of deep faith, and she's often and publicly credited her mother for that faith, thanking her for bringing Jesus and God into her life. And this post was in that same vein. This is what Savannah put out late yesterday on Instagram.

Raise your prayers with us, and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment we need you. He will keep in perfect peace those who hearts, those whose hearts are steadfast trusting in the Lord. It's a verse of Isaiah for all time for all of us. Bring her home. That's what a lot of the headlines have said after Savannah's post.

She knows this process as a journalist, She knows this process covering these types of crimes. To now be at the center of it just has to be such a humbling experience because she does know probably more than most about the timeline and what is involved and what's.

It has to be targeted because of Savannah Guthrie and Robes, I immediately went to nineteen ninety three and Michael Jordan's dad, like no one and maybe even to this day, would think that the death of his dad had nothing to do with him, but that crime was a random one.

Speaker 3: But she is one of the hosts of the opening ceremonies. Opening ceremonies are in Milan on Friday, as in three days from now, and we know how it goes covering Olympics. She probably was scheduled to leave yesterday or today at the very least to head to Milan to get prepared. This is a huge, huge role you take on knowing every single fact about nearly every country. As those Olympians walk into the arena, you have to be able to speak on your feet about just about everyone. So the amount of preparation and time. I know that she's already put in to do this very important job and this very important work is now out the door and obviously doesn't even matter at this point. It's so humbling when you realize, and it takes sometimes these moments where we all have to take a we have to take a look at our lives and say, what are we focus on?
