A lot of big people digging out, a lot of people freezing, a lot of people dealing with dangerous, dangerous Whether robes of storm did what it said it was going to do and it continues to do is going to be a problem for quite a while.

Speaker 3: That's right. And this, as you pointed out, was a deadly storm.

Speaker 1: At least a dozen deaths have been reported so far, and those numbers are expected to continue to rise.

Speaker 3: But man, it is cold outside.

Speaker 1: I have been fascinated watching chunks of ice float by our apartment in the Hudson. I haven't seen that in a very long time.

Speaker 2: And now I'm looking out there, I see another big ship some I don't know what that is, but it's just kind of ominous gray skies. It is slowly ship going by and with ice all over the water. It is a different scene here, but there are really some fascinating beautiful in some instances but certainly some treacherous scenes out there on the roadways. Really from Texas all the way over to the Carolinas, we're seeing problem. Some places got twenty plus inches of snow, thirty plus inches in some areas, and some areas are getting forty below temperatures in some parts of Minnesota in particular. The problem right now Rope still continues to be as of this recording power outages.

Speaker 1: Yes, oh my goodness, eight hundred thousand people in this country without power. You found a very staggering statistic. Ten percent of those power outages are concentrated in the states of Tennessee and Mississippi. They got really hard hit with those with that ice, which of course is devastating to power lines. But we've got freezing rains still in the South right now. And I think the official recording at Central Park was eleven point four inches of snow. That was the most snow we've gotten in more than one hundred years on that day. But we saw so much of that snow turned to freezing rain. Imagine how much higher those totals would have been had it stayed snow the entire time in this city.

Speaker 2: Well, some folks will tell you they prefer that snow, because we ended up with sleet and that freezing rain that was really pelting a lot of us in the face. It felt like little needles were hitting you in the face yesterday walking around the city. But that is the problem, and that those layers were put down, So when are they going to go away? Week and a half, maybe we do not rise above at least in New York, and certainly other places are the same. But Roes, we don't get not even just don't get above freezing four a week and a half, not even close, really.

Speaker 1: And that's we're not even talking windshells or feels like temperatures. We're talking about actual temperatures. It is Yeah, I just see single digits and single digits. I think the warmest we get is next Wednesday, where we hit a whopping thirty degrees. But so far on the ten day, don't see one temperature above freezing.

Speaker 2: So that is certainly treacherous. Yeah, it's cold, but that is dangerous coal and this is a storm that so far has proven deadly. Unfortunately, you could probably expect to see those numbers go up. Travel is a mess, virtually impossible in many places. Yes, on the roads. You gotta be careful out there, folks, but also anybody trying to get somewhere. I think maybe at this point, Robe, you're probably resigned to the fact I'm not going to be able to fly. And cancelations have hit numbers we haven't seen in many years.

Speaker 1: Yeah, since the pandemic. Actually, so Sunday eleven five hundred flights canceled. That is the most since March of twenty twenty. And today, of course is going to be tough trying to get anywhere. Also, speaking of air travel, want to let you know there was a plane that crashed around eight o'clock last night in Maine and Bangor, Maine, and as of this recording, we still do not have word on the eight people who were on board. It happened right after takeoff at Bangor Internationally Airport and they said this was in the height of the storm, so they haven't said whether it was a factor, but clearly that's going to be looked into. But do you find that odd that we don't have word on the people inside that plane yet?

Speaker 2: I mean, look, you had family notifications to make possibly you have and they might be maybe there are survivors, there's a confusion, a mix up, and they say just how awful it has been in the rescue efforts, given that the temperatures are in the negatives there in Maine. So they're trying to get that information out. We will pass that along. But the other major story, Yes, the weather is impacting everybody and roads. What we're seeing out of Minneapolis is you could argue impacting everybody in this country right now as well.

Speaker 1: Absolutely, DHS officials spent much of the weekend defending the actions of federal agents who are involved in that horrific weekend shooting killing ICU nurse VA nurse Alex Pretty.

Speaker 1: We saw one initially and then more angles came and despite what we all can see clearly on those videos, the Department of Homeland Security is sticking to their story. They say their agents were attacked by Pretty. They say that Preddy wanted to massacre federal agents and approached with a gun, when those videos clearly show him approaching with a cell phone.

Speaker 2: So it's okay, folks, you don't you're being told one thing and your eyes are saying another, and you should believe your eyes. And it's Okay, don't know how the administration are going to come out and maybe explain further, but they are sticking to the story right now. But the story is not true. Alex Pretty did not approach officers with a gun in his hand in any way threatening them, And the evidence of that is not just your eyes watching what Alex Pretty is doing, but watch what all the officers are doing when he's approaching. Obviously they're not reacting to a man who has a gun out because they are calm as well. So just the back and forth over these videos is getting a little silly because because it's clear what Alex Pretty is doing, also roles should be pointed out. Look, there are a lot of people analyzing it or trying to figure out whether or not he ever had a gun in his hand, even if he had one on him, And the one that is emerging now appears to show a federal agent retrieving that gun and walking away from the scrum before the shots were even fired.

Speaker 1: Correct, and he was on the ground without his gun according to those videos that we see when he was shot ten times, we're being told ten times now in the back.

Speaker 2: So we are seeing a growing memorial there the protests do continue. But also an update to give you that a judge we did good word issued a restraining order instructing the federal government to make sure they preserve all evidence tied to this shooting. They are right now at least DHS is in charge of investigating DHS and this shooting.

Speaker 1: And so, yes, isn't it interesting they've already put out a statement about what happened before they've even investigate it.

Speaker 2: But keep an eye on Minneapolis today. That story is on going. Meanwhile, another story here ines this is a significant one. The NBA postponed Saturday's game in Minneapolis between the Timberwolves and Warriors as a precaution. I say this is significant because robes when professional league get involved in big I mean big social uprisings, if you will, they can have an impact.

Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, Now the game did finally go on on Sunday instead of Saturday, but the NBA players issued a statement saying they could no longer remain silent.

Speaker 2: We don't know what further action they could take, but I guess a lot of people remember around George Floyd talk of possible even protests refusing to play a lot of them were wearing the T shirt. Again, it's just a matter of they have a big platform and a lot of people see them very visible. So if they want to get involved, they could absolutely have an impact. Another sporting note here, at least on a much different sporting note, But the Super Bowl is set now the Seahawks versus the Patriots, Seattle versus New England. This is a rematch of Super Bowl twenty twenty five. That was what eleven years ago.

No it's not, this was from twenty fifteen, clearly, but Seattle had a tough, snow covered victory over Denver ten to seven, and then New England beat LA and it kind of a shootout thirty one to twenty seven. But the last time they played Robes was the big one that it was controversial because Seattle chose to throw the ball and there was an interception at the goal line and they end up losing that game. But super Bowl sixty February eighth at Levi Stadium out in Santa Clara, California, all right.

Another threat from the President President issued via truth Social seems like a lot of them come from there these days. But this threat was directed once again to our neighbors to the north.

Speaker 1: How can he be so upset with Canada? Right, but the President said he is going to hit Canada with a one hundred percent tariff on all Canadian goods if Canada goes through with a trade deal with China. It's a little unclear what he's specifically referencing.

Speaker 2: Yes, some free trade deal if they go through free but they're not even considering that's not even on the table. But it's a very big threat. And this continues after he asked them to draw on the board of peace and then withdrew the invitation and invited them and then what was the thing he kind of spanked Carnie in.

Speaker 1: Canada lives because of the United States, and then Carney said that Canada lives because of the spirit of Canadian people, not because of the United States. So there's been a war on words, and now Trump is threatening a financial repercussion.

Speaker 1: Senate Democrats are saying they are now not going to support any additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security unless reforms are put in place.

Speaker 2: So this sets up the shutdown because they could possibly miss the deadline to fully fund the government. However, this won't be as severe as the last one because they've already approved some funding, so there's a whole package has already gone through. So this still would be a partial shutdown, still would have an impact. It's important to note the funding for the snap benefits, the food benefits, has already been approved. That's already gone through. Yes, kind of nice to know, so they might be more have more of an incentive to say, to hell with it, that's shut this baby down.

Speaker 1: That's one way to look at it, because I was thinking, well, on one hand, yes, the most vulnerable are not as or not at risk the way they were the last time around, but still this could be incredibly disruptive. Look at this number, eleven point two million domestically correct, that was enough to put it in first place. That is an extremely low number, twenty two point eight million total, and it's tough. I think about people who put so much effort and work and money and hope and promotion behind these types of movies, and then to have it land on a weekend where Mother Nature had other plans.

Speaker 2: This is how it goes. It was only projected to make twelve million, so even though it could have gone a lot worse for them other headlines at Avatar, Yeah, it came in number two. I think both of them spent at least seven weeks at number one. This one ends at five weeks at number one, so it's doing just fine.

I say again, circumstances often talk louder than opportunity. Now I say this one, and it immediately made me think of another we often heart. I think it was either a president or some event who said this one, the one where people often miss out on opportunity because it often is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

We are so quick to say, well, yeah, it's right there, but then I would have to do this, so then I'd have to go here, and then I have to We always can come up with these reasons, these circumstances under around why something could be so difficult and we missed the opportunity right there in front of us. Haven't you know the simplest form. Have you ever offered somebody a ride or or or a meal or something. Yes, I'll give you a ride to the airport, and then you say, yeah, but we need to leave a twelve thirdy go ooh, I don't need to leave until twelve fifty. I won't be ready. You giving them an operaportunity, but then the circumstances they don't like, so then they end up missing out on an opportunity. That's the thing we often miss that I was trying. It's in as simplest form, but it takes a little lection.

Speaker 1: Senate Democrats are saying they are now not going to support any additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security unless reforms are put in place.

Speaker 2: So this sets up the shutdown because they could possibly miss the deadline to fully fund the government. However, this won't be as severe as the last one because they've already approved some funding, so there's a whole package has already gone through. So this still would be a partial shutdown, still would have an impact. It's important to note the funding for the snap benefits, the food benefits, has already been approved. That's already gone through. Yes, kind of nice to know, so they might be more have more of an incentive to say, to hell with it, that's shut this baby down.

Look at this number, eleven point two million domestically correct, that was enough to put it in first place. That is an extremely low number, twenty two point eight million total, and it's tough. I think about people who put so much effort and work and money and hope and promotion behind these types of movies, and then to have it land on a weekend where Mother Nature had other plans.

Speaker 2: This is how it goes. It was only projected to make twelve million, so even though it could have gone a lot worse for them other headlines at Avatar, Yeah, it came in number two. It doesn't matter how much it made this weekend. What matters is it's at one point three billion total. It tracking pretty far behind the other Avatar movies. I think both of them spent at least seven weeks at number one. This one ends at five weeks at number one, so it's doing just fine.

It might be a two parter because the first one might take him in and the quote is quote. Circumstances often talk louder than opportunity. I say again, circumstances often talk louder than opportunity. Now I say this one, and it immediately made me think of another we often heart. I think it was either a president or some event who said this one, the one where people often miss out on opportunity because it often is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

We are so quick to say, well, yeah, it's right there, but then I would have to do this, so then I'd have to go here, and then I have to We always can come up with these reasons, these circumstances under around why something could be so difficult and we missed the opportunity right there in front of us. Haven't you know the simplest form. Have you ever offered somebody a ride or or or a meal or something. Yes, I'll give you a ride to the airport, and then you say, yeah, but we need to leave a twelve thirdy go ooh, I don't need to leave until twelve fifty. I won't be ready. You giving them an operaportunity, but then the circumstances they don't like, so then they end up missing out on an opportunity. That's the thing we often miss that I was trying. It's in as simplest form, but it takes a little lection.
