Colbert and Kimmel did kind of a crossover show to see those two together in late night. They had one sole purpose, they said, which was, as you could guess, to piss off the President of the United States and robes who were hoping maybe well kind of started with rumors, it ended up being confirmed, and now it's I guess double confirmed if you will. Speaker 2: But what's on everybody's mind this morning is the fact that, yes, here we are again that the government is shut down, folks. And a lot of folks will tell you this is unnecessary. Where they should all be unnecessary, right if they're doing their jobs. The job is to keep the government funded.

And so yeah, we do begin our run on this Wednesday morning with word that the government is officially closed for business. The feared yet foreshadowed government shutdown kicked in officially at twelve oh one last night after Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on a temporary spending measure that would have could have kept the government open while those two sides negotiated a longer term deal.

Speaker 2: Yeah, so an estimated seven hundred and fifty thousand federal workers are being furloughed, in other words, told not to come to work and don't expect a check. They are. However, federal employees entitled legally to back pay once they come back, but we don't know how long they're going to be out. And yes, rent is due now. Well, many essential workers still have to show up to work. We're talking about members of the military, air traffic controllers. Yes, but they are required to show up to work even though they are not getting paid. Some people told to stay home, but some essential folks have to come. Still not getting paid. You know who is getting paid? Yes, Members of Congress. Their checks keep coming. Also, of note, Medicare, Social Security, those services are expected to keep running and those benefits continuing as usual.

Speaker 1: Though the shutdown is just starting, there is actually no end in sight. The two sides keep doing more talking in front of the cameras blaming one another, than they're actually doing behind the scenes negotiating a deal. This is the first shutdown we've had since twenty eighteen. That one lasted a little over a month. It cost the US economy and estimated three billion dollars. But this fight is far from over. Democrats want a trillion dollars added to the budget for healthcare costs and to undo some of the spending cuts that the Republicans fought hard to get in that big beautiful bill. So we are truly at an impasse. And it's a game of chicken at this point.

Speaker 2: And they are in no mood right now, given some of the I guess recent losses. Some in their base might say to cave. So they are really really digging in. There is no end, and nobody is talking at this point. They weren't even at work.

Well, that was awkward, right, a room full of generals being told by the Secretary of Defense that it's a bad look for there to be fat admirals and generals commanding troops. Those were his words. That was just one of a number of eyebrow raising nuggets dropped by the Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during yesterday's extraordinary meeting of top military leaders.

Speaker 1: That's right. Heg Seth last week ordered all one Star and above leaders to come to Quantico for the meeting. At the time, no one knew exactly why. Well now we do know. It was to deliver this message shape up or ship out. Eight hundred plus generals and admirals got a talking to from Hegseeth on everything from fitness to grooming to wokeness. He announced a return to the highest me standards for service members and training, and if that means women don't qualify, it is what it is.

Speaker 2: They also laid out new requirements for personal training and fitness, saying that generals and admirals would not be exempt. And I quote here now, frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations or really any formation and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon and leading commands around the country and the world. It's a bad look. It is bad, and it's not who we are. End quote. He also made clear that there would be no more, as he put it, identity months or DEI offices.

Speaker 1: At one point, Hegseth even suggested anyone who had an issue with what he was saying, well they should do the honorable thing and leave the generals. Also heard from President Trump. He spoke afterwards, and a lot of ears perked up when he suggested that he may use troops using US cities as training grounds.

Speaker 2: What we're seeing in Chicago and Memphis and Portland and DC. That got a lot of people's attention. Continuing here on the run. Now, peace in the Middle East on hold, and the clock is ticking. President Trump gave Hamas three to four days, as he put it, to accept the US backed peace plan for Gaza. Mediators from Cutter and Egypt presented the twenty point plan to Hamas late Monday, after the proposal was announced at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump.

Speaker 1: Hamas was not involved in any of those negotiations, but the plan would require the terrorist organization to disarm, which is the demand the group has previously rejected. It did say though, it would review the plan in good faith and provide a response. Trump gave this warning to Hamas if it did not accept the peace proposal, saying Hamas is either going to do it or not, and if it's not, it's going to be a very sad end.

This is all part of the deal between the administration and Peiser in which the pharmaceutical company is going to sell certain medications directly to consumers. Peiser will offer what's referred to as most Favored Nations pricing to US customers. Basically, they're going to charge the same price to US customers as they do to folks in other countries. We don't know the details, we don't know which medications, we don't know exactly when the website will launch. We believe it sometime next year, and we're not exactly sure how much the drugs will cause. Because this was interesting what the President said, Okay, he.

No, folks, it's not out of the goodness of their pharmaceutical hearts. The administration has threatened a one hundred percent tariff on drug companies if they don't cooperate and finding ways to bring down drug costs.

The judge yesterday late yesterday denied Shawcomb's request to have his two convictions thrown out or to get a new trial.

Speaker 2: Yeah. Diddy's defense team argued that his convictions for transportation to engage in prostitution were invalid. In part. You remember this was fascinating. It was a violation of his First Amendment right because he was filming these free costs. It was some form of expression and he shouldn't go to prison for that. Well, the judge wasn't convinced by the defense arguments. The judge made sense of this to me, roobes with this line, A legal activity can't be laundered into constitutionally protected activity. His team has argued for a fourteen month sentence, meaning he would pretty much walk out that day for credit for good behavior and credit for time served. The prosecution, though, is asking for eleven years and three months, so it will be very interesting to see where the judge places his sentence given those two acts with very different years.

Next up on the Run here now, even though hurricanes Umberto and Immelda will not make landfall here in the US, they are still wreaking havoc along the shores of North Carolina. As video out there, you might have seen of several five at least unoccupied houses along the outer banks collapsing into the Atlantic Ocean high surf and waves, or crashing into them.

Speaker 1: Authorities are warning that even more collapses are possible given the two storms offshore, and ask people to avoid the area for several miles in each direction, given the uncertain conditions of the ocean and the debris they say that has now scattered the entire shoreline from those houses. North Carolina's coast has been eroding for years. I didn't know this. Seventeen privately owned houses have collapsed into the ocean since twenty twenty.

Meantime, Bermuda under a hurricane warning today after Emberto passed north of the island Tuesday, and the meld, which is expected to strengthen to a category two hurricane later today, takes aim at Bermuda tonight. He agreed to a eight year, one hundred and thirty six million dollars deal. It's going to pay him seventeen million dollars a year, and that breaks the record, I guess by three million. We got a similar call we did, and I actually said the same thing. Please don't do this. You are making a huge mistake.

And maybe there is a way to defend an adult being caught up in the moment where we're seeing adults snatching memorabilia sports memorabilia from the clutches of a child in the stands.

And then just as the boy was taking it from Mahomes, a woman Miller dressed in New York Giants gear, grabs it in instead.

I'm sorry I ruined your day. It wasn't my intention. Well, her critics weren't buying it and left further comments like I'm sorry I got caught. She felt horrible because she's getting dragged all over social media.

She says she's trying to find the boy and asking for TikTok's help to connect them so she can return the headband. She did the right thing in apologizing. She want to say it was late, it was late, but it did come. I give her credit for that. The moments, though, I'm the adults, I think they do get caught up in the moment, because at that moment, she was just as excited as that child was she. I think she probably didn't notice or acknowledge or I just think the adults in those moments because I've seen those scrums happen so much, and the athletes try to hand it one direction and everybody goes for it, and she was.

I would have handed it over if someone had confronted me. Oh yeah, oh, she was like, I would have if someone had confronted me was this video. Then the next one she's all like, I'm sorry. It was tough. When you watch them one right after the other, like I did, I encourage everyone to do it. It's it's hard to buy her apology.

That was just one of a number of eyebrow raising nuggets dropped by the Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during yesterday's extraordinary meeting of top military leaders.

Speaker 1: That's right. Heg Seth last week ordered all one Star and above leaders to come to Quantico for the meeting. At the time, no one knew exactly why. Well now we do know. It was to deliver this message shape up or ship out. Eight hundred plus generals and admirals got a talking to from Hegseeth on everything from fitness to grooming to wokeness. He announced a return to the highest me standards for service members and training, and if that means women don't qualify, it is what it is.

Speaker 2: They also laid out new requirements for personal training and fitness, saying that generals and admirals would not be exempt. And I quote here now, frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations or really any formation and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon and leading commands around the country and the world. It's a bad look. It is bad, and it's not who we are. End quote. He also made clear that there would be no more, as he put it, identity months or DEI offices.

Speaker 1: At one point, Hegseth even suggested anyone who had an issue with what he was saying, well they should do the honorable thing and leave the generals. Also heard from President Trump. He spoke afterwards, and a lot of ears perked up when he suggested that he may use troops using US cities as training grounds.

Speaker 2: What we're seeing in Chicago and Memphis and Portland and DC. That got a lot of people's attention. Continuing here on the run. Now, peace in the Middle East on hold, and the clock is ticking. President Trump gave Hamas three to four days, as he put it, to accept the US backed peace plan for Gaza. Mediators from Cutter and Egypt presented the twenty point plan to Hamas late Monday, after the proposal was announced at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump.

Speaker 1: Hamas was not involved in any of those negotiations, but the plan would require the terrorist organization to disarm, which is the demand the group has previously rejected. It did say though, it would review the plan in good faith and provide a response. Trump gave this warning to Hamas if it did not accept the peace proposal, saying Hamas is either going to do it or not, and if it's not, it's going to be a very sad end.

We don't know the details, we don't know which medications, we don't know exactly when the website will launch. She says she's trying to find the boy and asking for TikTok's help to connect them so she can return the headband. She did the right thing in apologizing. She want to say it was late, it was late, but it did come. I give her credit for that. The moments, though, I'm the adults, I think they do get caught up in the moment, because at that moment, she was just as excited as that child was she. I think she probably didn't notice or acknowledge or I just think the adults in those moments because I've seen those scrums happen so much, and the athletes try to hand it one direction and everybody goes for it, and she was.
