We are expecting potentially just about anything could happen in the courtroom today as closing arguments are taking place. Speaking of court cases, Letitia James, Yeah, there's a big headline there, Sharon Moore. We have all eyes on that courtroom to figure out what the heck he may be charged with. The accused Charlie Kirkussassen was in a courtroom instead of just via satellite imaging, and Luigi Mangioni also his pre trial court hearings continue.

Speaker 2: The jury will be getting their instructions to begin their deliberations, but not before we hear closing arguments from both the defense and the prosecution.

Speaker 1: Yesterday we just heard arguments. They weren't closing. They were arguing over the jury instructions and what what words should be in there. And yes, the defense rested its case without putting on a single witness, including Brian Walsh, who officially told the judge you, no, I will not be testifying. So this is it. Trial was supposed to go three weeks. It's only been two, three or four.

Speaker 2: They said even maybe four and a half. We thought maybe we'd be into the new year and Christmas would be well, at least slightly problematic for a lot of jurors. But turns out they got this thing going quickly. Now. Our legal expert, who we've been talking to throughout this trial thinks that the prosecution rushed the case and that might be to their detriment.

Speaker 1: Right, continue on the run here on this Friday morning, two police officers who were at that McDonald's during Luigi Mangioni's arrest testify to his pre trial hearing yesterday. This has been going on almost two weeks now. But the key issue here is whether or not the first search of Luigi Mangioni's items was an illegal search.

Speaker 2: Yes, so Mangioni's attorneys are trying to get that key evidence that was found in that backpack tossed out. They claim it was an illegal search because they say there was no warrant for the search, and they claim he was not read his rights.

Speaker 2: He provided them a false name, so they needed to figure out who he was. These hearings that we've been seeing go on now for more than a week are expected to continue into next week, as is the case because this is such an important hearing. It will literally make or break the prosecute case.

Speaker 1: Yes, well, we don't expect a ruling on that till some time in January from this judge. But enough again, it will continue into next week as we continue on this morning run, Tennessee executed Harold Wayne Nichols last night for a crime he committed nearly thirty seven years ago. This was the nineteen eighty eight murder of a college student there in Tennessee. Karen Pulley was her name. She was twenty years old.

Speaker 2: Yes, and by the way, Nichols fully admitted to the crime, admitted to actually raping several other women on campus, and said he would have continued to do what he was doing if he hadn't been caught. Now, his attorneys fought his execution initially because they said that he would be and I guess now he is the first man in the state of Tennessee to be executed for a crime he pleaded guilty to. He admitted to, and they were using that as a reason for asking for leniency or at least to stay his execution and put him in life in prison, because he was not only admitting to the crime, but expressed remorse for it.

Speaker 2: Anyway. The victim is thirty eight years old. Thankfully she's in stable condition. But my goodness was that is a frightening story, all right. Next up on the run, former Michigan football coach Sharon Moore expected to make a court appearance today.

Speaker 2: An interesting one because he's been held since Wednesday and we don't know what he's being charged with yet. There's been talk about an assault, there's been Frankly, as we see often when we don't get real concrete information from police or from the university, everyone fills in the gaps with rumors and so yes, if you go online, you will see all sorts of stuff about what he may be charged with and why he was fired.

Speaker 1: And like you mentioned, he's been held since Wednesday. Wednesday was a hell of a day, a hell of a few hours for him. He was fired by the University of Mission. They say he had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Don't know all those details. But then just hours after he was fired and this came out, police were called to apparently an assault that was taking place, and he was taken into custody. He's been in jail since then. Now the university has been clear to the campus community and they're saying if anybody out there has any more information, they've given a hotline. So this could have more legs to it, even but this is an awful story for those kids, for that team, for that university. This is one of the most important brands in college football, the University of Michigan.

Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, the people have been going through his social media accounts. They have been trying to connect the dots. I was thinking about his wife and his three young daughters. This has got to be so difficult for them. She was even involved. His wife was with police and trying to get him. They were worried about him having suicidal thoughts and she expressed that to police. So this is devastating for the campus, it's devastating for the more family, and we hope to get some more information.

Speaker 2: He is so much younger than I thought. When I saw that, I was shocked. I thought, my goodness, he's a young man. He had such a bright future. Really sad, all right. Next up on the run, the man charged in the assassination of Charlie Kirk was in a courtroom for the first time yesterday. We've only seen him beforehand via video making court appearances.

Speaker 1: You know, I didn't realize that it makes sense. Twenty two year old Tyler Robinson's who were talking about here. He was in shackles. He was also in street clothes. They had actually argued over this, and his attorneys wanted him to be able to come in street clothes and he was. He had family members there as well to support him. But Robes, this is actually hearing they're having that it's not necessarily about him and the crime. It's about whether or not we the media going to get access to the trial. Wow.

Speaker 2: Yes, And so attorneys on both sides want to limit the media access, so they want to actually ban cameras from the courtroom. Obviously, this story and this assassination has provoked so many other difficult moments in this country for people who have strong opinions about Kirk, about his assassination, So it makes sense that they want to bring down the temperature when it comes to this trial.

The Justice Department tried for a third time to indict New York State Attorney generally Titia James Aka. Well they say perceived political enemy of President Trump. Perceived is what folks like to say. But you know who we're talking about. But yeah, they tried a third time and once again a grand jury has said no. She has been indicted previously on charges of lying on a mortgage application, but the first case was dismissed because the prosecutor was appointed unlawfully. They tried to reindict again, a grand jury said nah. So they tried again with another grand jury in that one yesterday, same thing, refused to indict. Don't know if they're going to let this go.

Speaker 2: Next up on the run, Well, the state of Indiana, and specifically the Republicans in the state of Indiana have gone against President Trump. The Republican held legislature voted against redistricting the governor. The Republican governor spoke out against it, like, I'm with Trump, y'all are crazy.

Speaker 2: It could have given Republicans two extra seats, and this would be continuing to fulfill the mandate President Trump made to Republican states, Hey, we need more seats come midterm elections. We need to keep our power in the halls of Congress. And you know, twenty one Republicans that's significant said no.

He wants MAGA primaries in the spring. So but you know what, quite frankly, give them credit. This jerry mandering we shouldn't be changing. I mean, I think generally we are all on board that we shouldn't redraw every couple of years just to give ourselves an advantage. Supply.

Speaker 2: Look, this isn't about Republicans or Democrats, because both sides have done it, and one in connection with the other. But the point being is no, of course that's not okay. Of course that is manipulating our our political system. Well, so shocking, isn't that what all policy? You cast yourself? Why am I shocked?

Both were supposed to be upon fix to those expiring health care subsidies, you know, the very issue that led to that record government shutdown. So what happens now? Insurance premiums are going to go up January first, and they're going home over Christmas. This is where we are. The numbers say, twenty million plus Americans are going to be impacted with some significant increases in their health care cost.

Speaker 2: Next up on the run, hundreds of people are in quarantine in South Carolina because of measles, two hundred and fifty plus. Most of them are children. This is These are staggering numbers. One hundred and eleven new cases of measles in just the past two months. Most of them have been traced back to exposure from one church. People have also said Thanksgiving caused a lot of this to all the family gatherings people all got together. But the vaccination rate in the county, this isn't what they call it upstate South Carolina. It's like Greenville, Spartanburg area is only at ninety percent.

Speaker 1: Well, and you say, only now if you don't know and you hear that the vaccination rate is ninety percent, it sounds.

Speaker 2: Good, yes, but anyone who studies how disease is spread zurologists, et cetera, you need a ninety five percent number. That's the number at which they've determined. When you have ninety five percent vaccination rate, you prevent outbreaks. When you go below that, you are inviting the potential for outbreaks. And the concern is too that these types of viruses can mutate, so it starts spreading from person to person. Yes, most of us are vaccinated, but there is a concern that these viruses they can mutate, so it's it puts everyone at risk.
