Laos Cave Rescue: Signs Of Life! Rescuers Hear Knocking In Search For Last 2 Missing Miners

Just one day after rescuers reported they had given up hope of finding the remaining two miners, a new cave shaft has been discovered where they now believe the men are trapped. This area is described as even tighter and more unpleasant than the area the other five were rescued from over the weekend.

Yes, five have been pulled out alive, but two were still missing, and we might have gotten the first signs of life of those last two missing men. With that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ.

Speaker 3: Uh, this is huge news because earlier this weekend, the head of the rescue volunteer group had told news outlets that they were kind of stopping looking for these two because they either thought they weren't alive or they were trapped in a space just too small for divers or rescuers to enter, and they had essentially given up hope. So this is huge. This is everything.

Speaker 2: So even for those rescuers, Robes, as exhausted and tired as they are, they even need right on some renewed energy, a new pep in their step right, and this gives hope. So what we're talking about the signs of life, Robes, they knocked and they think they got a response from somewhere.

Speaker 3: We can confirm that there were definite knocking sounds in response to signals. So it sounds like they were knocking and they heard knocks back. Can you imagine that moment and they say it's not an anomaly, it's not an echo. They said, no, this is knocking.

Speaker 2: And they wanted to make sure they made that point because they weren't sure about what they had. They are sure that they have gotten a response, Robes, this is huge. So how did this come about? They're exploring at least a new part right now, believe of this whole complicated cave shaft. So remind everybody went down there on May twentieth. They pulled five out. We'll explain a little more about and let you hear the moment. It's hard to the video is one thing, Robes, but I at least wanted people to hear the audio of how these guys were wailing when they were The last guy was pulled out and they just broke down in tears and everybody was cheering.

Speaker 3: Yeah, from what I read, this was kind of fascinating. Obviously, the first diver had to get pulled out. But it was interesting to think these other four were able to crawl out because they had pumped the cave system out enough that they were able to squeeze.

Speaker 2: They needed a way to pump water out, and they were able to get enough out and that work still goes on, but robes as that work continues. It's hard to I mean, it's hard to overstate the rainy season. They are dealing with constant threat of not just some rain, but downpours and mud slides and all kinds. So this is what they're dealing with.

Speaker 1: But robes, this shaft they found, they think it's now leading to what is they believe the only place left that anybody could be.

Speaker 3: That's kind of wild and they felt like they thought they had exhausted all their options. They didn't know there was this other deeper chamber and it was the other five men who got out, correct, who basically told them they found a crack or they saw something that was worth exploring, and that led them to this other area that was otherwise undiscovered.

Speaker 2: They're having to map out these caves based on what they go in and see what the other men have told them they've gotten out, and they're using some kind of satellite imagery to be able to map the caves the best they can. This is incredible work. And every time I see the video ropes, I get on comfortable. It is so tight.

Speaker 3: And to think that these men went in there looking for something, looking for gold, looking for some sort of valuable mineral that they could bring back out to pay for, probably food on the table of their families, because who else would go and crawl into these very dangerous crevasses and do it during the rainy season with danger warning signs everywhere the government saying don't go in there. But that speaks to the desperation of these folks to go in there. They weren't looking to just make it big or to cash it out. They're probably almost certainly trying to feed their damn families.

Speaker 2: To risk their lives. At least five of those lives have been saved now, Robes and look the first when they discovered them helped me a little bit. It had to be midweek last week when they found the first five, right when they found that those five were alive. Yes, that was when we first got word. I didn't realize initially, Ropes, that there were seven men altogether. They didn't go in as a group of seven buddies.

Speaker 3: They split, yes, and the one man because it was I guess eight total. The guy who got out before the entrance was blocked with the floodwaters. He was the one who was able to alert rescuers, or to at least alert authorities that there were seven guys trapped in there.

Speaker 3: I guess six of us were together, and the other two entered at the same time, but they weren't with our group, and that's why they were in different locations.

Speaker 1: Was very exciting. Oh my goodness, it was a very exciting moment. But as they started to get a plan and started to pull them out, your your heart kind of sank, like, oh my goodness, the focus is on these guys right now. Where about those other two and where are they? So Ropes hope was kind of fading.

Speaker 2: This is now enormous and this was one of the best I guess statements we got. It came from one of the rescuers wrote this on face and this is how we got word about this knocking and ropes.

Speaker 3: Yes, this quote will make everybody. I dare you not to have chills, because this is what the rescuer had to say yesterday when we knocked, there was a signal responding back. It was a knocking sound meant to be heard. Based on our initial assessment, this is considered not to be a reflection or an echo of this sound. That is so cool, a knocking sound meant to be heard. And they say that this is what about. I had to look it up two hundred meters further from where they no, sorry, it was one hundred meters further from where they were, So that's another three hundred and twenty eight feet so to speak. I had to do the math because meters mean nothing to me, but that's just how much deeper these guys are and apparently this is not.

Speaker 2: Yeah, es as deep as they were to the idea that they're going deeper to find the other two is just incredible. So all five in the video we talked about robes. The images started coming out. The first guy got out, but then they finally got all five of them out over the weekend. These where as you said, robes found eight hundred feet from the entrance. So just take a quick list in here, folks. Again, you're not looking at the video, so it's a little difficult, but you'll trust me. You'll understand when you hear what you're hearing. And this is the moment when one of the last was pulled out and Robes he was They were kind of cool, a lot of people around in this image, but he embraces one of the rescuers. Speaker 3: Can you imagine when you finally are breathing fresh air, you have sunlight on your face for the first time in nearly two weeks, and I just thought, just that moment, I just think once they knew they were found, once food was being brought to them, once they were able to realize that their family knew that they were still alive, all of that fear and uncertainty, the not knowing, the limbo, those days where they didn't know if they'd ever be found. That I think that has to be the most tortuous mental anguish a person could experience. You're sitting there in the dark, sensory deprivation, no food and no way of communicating, and not knowing if anyone even realizes you're alive.

Speaker 2: And where you are rose Here we are the start on May twentieth. Here we are on June first. So you still have two down there who, at least according to the knocking, are still alive. What kind of shape and are they in you can only imagine. But you spoke about this last week, Robes. Now they have some hope which could carry them enough time to get rescue. There is hope they hear somebody coming after them, and that could be huge. But stay here, folks, you are not gonna believe. As difficult as things have been in this rescue, they say, things are about to get even more tricky, more difficult, and yes, even a tighter squeeze.

And this is an exciting episode because we have finally gotten word that they heard knock from those two They believe those two missing miners still trapped in that louse cave. And I love because the excitement of getting those five men up was one thing, and there was a lot of despair about giving up or just not being able to find those other two missing villagers. But now with a knock and a knock in response, they believe they know approximately where these other two men are. And look the head of the group that is rescuing these folks, these amazing, brave, daring, highly skilled divers. They said, guess what, moving forward, this is not going to be a matter of us sitting around waiting for water to be pumped out.

And this is incredible. I'm keeping it even a closer eye because we all did a little bit lose a little hope for these last that was no sign no signals. They weren't talking about an air pocket somewhere they could be here, or that we didn't hear anything.

Speaker 3: No daylight, there's no circadian rhythm they're operating off of. They they have to be so confused and weak, and just that knock, Oh my god, that's just it's a movie in the making.

Speaker 2: Absolutely, And the place they are now is being described right now robe they say, this is it. This is the only place these two can be. So they're just trying to get to that spot now, but getting to it, Robes, we talk about we keep using this, say the measurement. They kept telling us twenty three inches across in some places twenty three inches across, like you have to take your equipment off, squeeze your body through. Guy was even talking about having to inhale to make himself oh finner to get through some spots. But Robes, that might have been the easy part.

Speaker 3: Yeah, Because we've got some quotes from the rescue team there who are preparing to try and go get these two men out. They say they do believe there is a significant air pocket that is about one hundred meters further, but they say to get there, to get to where they think these men are. They described it as a fairly lethal passage, and they describe the stretch that they're going to have to go through as even tighter and more unpleasant than anything that.

Speaker 2: You have to go through a whole process. You had to get trained. They could do it for you in a couple hours, but Ropes to be rescued. One of the miners had to become a scuba diver.

Speaker 2: The other four were able to get out because the water came down enough, but one of them, they said, they actually had to teach scuba too to get out.

Speaker 3: You and I talked about among the five, how you decided who went out first and who went out last. I figured those would be the two worst positions to be in to try and get out of that cave. And turns out the first person had at the hardest. They're the ones who had to scuba dive because the water was still at a high enough level. Now, yes, he got to get out first, which was exciting, and he actually got out quite a bit earlier than the other four. Maybe the other four they were gonna have to go back in and try to do the same thing, but the water levels came down enough for them not to have to scuba dive. But that first guy, he went through it, but he did get out a little bit sooner.

Speaker 3: You know what, because in case water came flushing it flooding in because think about this, we keep talking about they've had to stop and start multiple times, and obviously they've been pumping water out twenty four to seven because the torrential rains keep coming and hampering their ability to get folks out. So, yeah, maybe having the scuba equipment would make you feel a little bit safer, because I'm thinking, as you're squeezing through these unbelievably tight areas, I'm imagining you're thinking about a wall of water coming at you unexpectedly because the rain starts and you don't know when it's Mother nature. You can't predict necessarily, so to have the scuba deer scuba gear at least would make you feel well, I'm prepared or I'll be able to get through this even if the water comes.

Speaker 3: You and I talked about among the five, how you decided who went out first and who went out last. I figured those would be the two worst positions to be in to try and get out of that cave. And turns out the first person had at the hardest. They're the ones who had to scuba dive because the water was still at a high enough level. Now, yes, he got to get out first, which was exciting, and he actually got out quite a bit earlier than the other four. Maybe the other four they were gonna have to go back in and try to do the same thing, but the water levels came down enough for them not to have to scuba dive. But that first guy, he went through it, but he did get out a little bit sooner.

Speaker 3: You know what, because in case water came flushing it flooding in because think about this, we keep talking about they've had to stop and start multiple times, and obviously they've been pumping water out twenty four to seven because the torrential rains keep coming and hampering their ability to get folks out. So, yeah, maybe having the scuba equipment would make you feel a little bit safer, because I'm thinking, as you're squeezing through these unbelievably tight areas, I'm imagining you're thinking about a wall of water coming at you unexpectedly because the rain starts and you don't know when it's Mother nature. You can't predict necessarily, so to have the scuba deer scuba gear at least would make you feel well, I'm prepared or I'll be able to get through this even if the water comes.
