More with Cynthia Nixon, our favorite guest, and we are going to recap I Heart New York, which is a really tremendous episode. We're going to go through it with Cynthia and talk about her memories and Miranda giving birth and all the fun things. The thing that I thought about watching this, you know, yes, Big is obviously big and whatever, and there's like so much good and bad, right, but when he drops some of the she's most wagger, right like when they you know, they go out and in the horse drunk carriage that she gets for him because she's trying to show him the glorious night before he leaves. And then she gets the call from you, and you know, the guys like I can't leave the park with the horse, which I just want to be on record. The horses should not be in the park anymore. Okay, we learned to either. They just decided, thank god, because of the horror in the council. Oh, thank God in heaven.

Speaker 2: But can I just also say one thing because I was watching it, Yeah, she's being d I'm having the baby amount SINAI right dropped at nine ninth and fifth. He wouldn't have to.

I do remember seeing the horse rink carriages on the street though, do you remember this like back back well, I mean they're always on fifteen right, No, where they're way seventh right the ninth, yeah, right, but that's where they wait. That's like their area. I remember seeing them on the street with the car back in the day, and I think that was the why they were thinking of it. Do you know what I mean? Because I remember thinking, like, God, those poor horses, you know what I mean.

Then, right, that's interesting, but they're not actually in Okay, we're gonna have to wait till we get there. And I don't remember, but I just remember that they're in a carriage at some point, and very very it's a sleigh. They're in a sleigh slash carriage whatever some something that I assumed was in the park with the horses. I don't know. We'll find out. We'll find out. Speaker 2: Point, and I remember a lot of my focus was was literally pushing, and so you can see I'm so red in the face.

Speaker 2: I was so impressed, right because I spent a lot of time in the pushing part, literally pushing hard.

Speaker 2: I loved that it was pretty and I you know, one of the things that I loved was and it was partly of my own experience because I remember when Sam was put in my arms.

Speaker 2: Yes, And also because Miranda has been so ambivalent about being a mother. I love that it's not like joy or tears, right, it's.

Speaker 2: Right alien And because right, because the baby is and and Miranda's like trying to figure out how to interface with this creature, and like so the creature puts up its arm, so she sort.

Speaker 1: Of puts up her arm. It's really cute. Yeah, really really good and so different than the kind of cliche version of it, right, which is excellent, Yes, excellent. I thought it was really really good. And I love that she's there with you. I bought it. Yeah. You know, my friend Josine was there with me when my first two kids were born. Yeah, he was having a friend. It's great having a friend. It was cute, and it was cute that he's down there because it's the opposite of the Also the cliche that the guy and wanted to be down there. But he's like, no, I'm going to do all of it, you know, which is great.

Speaker 2: And I love everybody carry in particular, but I love people understanding that Miranda's emotions and her her receiving of this seminal maternal moment have to be tempered and have to be.

Speaker 1: Yeah, it's good, It's really really good. It's really really good. I don't remember what I thought at the time, but I thought it was really good. And also I forgot that I was out there. And also I love Samantha comes in that wig. I forgot all about.

Speaker 1: Because it really shifts her. It really shifts. Yeah, and the glasses. It's a very She's so like a nineteen forties movie star, right, you know, she looks fantastic, right, But it's also funny because in my mind I would never have put the wig in it. Like, it's also like the moment where they go up and to the shoes when Carrie's trying to get the perfect outfit for the final dinner with Big and she sees the shoes and she says, hello, lover. I thought that was way back like in season two or whatever. It's interesting that we're still able to kind of do the kind of like funny, frothy things within all this drama that they've created. With the writing, you know, it's kind of amazing, like you're having a baby. She's running around in a wig, a rock cal welch wig, you know, trying to catch Richard cheating, which she does. I mean, it's a very it's brave writing, you know, like to juxtapose all the things at once, right, but they seem real, Like even when she's got the wig on and she's hiding and she's kind of comically doing it, it's still you believe it, you know, like it's such a departure for her, also for Samantha doing that. It's interesting. I can't stand him though at this point frankly mister right, yes, yes, yes, And I don't remember, like did we plan to keep him around so long? I don't know. And then they get back together. Do they get back together?

And in the beginning he was so he matched her, you know, and it was I liked it, right, the vibe that like she finally found somebody who kind of matched her energy and we'd all of it, right. But after a while, I'm like, oh lord, oh lord. But I mean, it gives her a lot of different things to do, which is nice for change.

Speaker 2: But you know when when uh, when she finds them. I mean the thing that I remember so well that hasn't happened yet is when she starts posting those things. Oh it's great, so great, And I immediately went there and she and she lets the papers go beautiful and the cop tries to stop Wilson.

Speaker 1: Wow, yes, you're right, isn't she incredible? And then she explains what happened, and the woman is like, so great, it's so great. I'd forgotten all of that too. And I really loved rewatch. Yeah, it was really good. It's so good to see so many actors that we were able to put in tiny roll, you know.

Speaker 1: No, no, it's very interesting. This is what I think. I don't think we knew it was the finale or whatever. How is that possible? It's wait, no, he's you're right. I think he must have been like in the throes of the yeah.

Speaker 1: Totally, but I think she did a great job. Yeah, yeah, and she was just so easy. I think we don't remember her because she was so easy, right, do you know what I mean? Like I remember her, but I mean I don't remember her being there with this, right. I think Michael's also if he's present, he's so present, you know, he takes up the space in a way or whatever. Wait, let's see what else? What else? What else? Overall? I mean, there's just really so many carries, Like it's interesting the whole, Like there's so many things that live on from this episode, right, like, hello, lover, you can't leave New York. You're the Chrysler building. Yeah, Well, if you're tired, you take a nap, but you don't move to that. But I'd totally forgotten all these things though they're all means. It's so funny that they things have a life and such, and it makes me so curious, Like would he have called her? He wouldn't have called her. I don't think he would have called her because he says I hate goodbyes. I think he would have left and been like, I'll send you a plane ticket, and that's so much more.

I also think if you think about his perspective, which we don't really need to, but you know, he was married, it didn't work out. He has an affair with her, but then also she's been running around with aiden. He dates the movie star who he can't call, like he's his life's not going to how he takes and he kind of alludes gently to that. But we'd never really see bags whole perspective, you know, which is fine because normally that's the perspective we'd be living in. But I love her her lengthy voiceover where she talks about. She says, maybe our mistakes, or what make our fate so good right without them, would shape our lives. Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn't fall in love, or have babies or be who we are. After all, seasons change, so do others. So do the cities. Oh, seasons change, so do cities. This is what he changed D nine to eleven. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart and if you're very lucky, play right away. So good, isn't it? Yeah, it's so good that we consider twenty five years later. Yeah, get teary, Michael Patrick's so so good. Yeah, you know, and then there's a black card comes in and then it says, to our city you are and no, it's yeah, so good.

Speaker 1: Do you remember the pressure that we felt like get out there and be on the streets and you know.

Speaker 1: And I remember at one point we thought, there's this picture of Willie and Sarah that somehow in our minds we've never been able to figure out what it was and I thought that someone had told me at some point that they had gone out and pretend to film a scene that was never shown. Really, and Michael Patrick told me because I was like, Michael explained this picture to me that was from the movie and got cut. So it's just a picture that floats around in the world that no one knows what it is because the scene never aired. And what Michael said was, I never cut Willie. So I remember the one scene that I ever cut Willy, which was from the movie. Wow, I love that. I know me too, But it's such a great picture. They're in the village somewhere. They look amazing that I had thought, well, maybe they did do that, because I do remember this pressure of like, we need you guys to be on the street function film right, like business, yes, and we've got to kind of get ourselves together, you know, after the whole you know, it had been kind of a a long time of recovery. It seemed like, though, I think we went back, you know what in February, right right, Because that's the other thing I think when I'm watching the next refreezing Old and you're in the rains, and remember they make you wait in the rain with when am Mira is coming, You're like, I'm waiting in the rain, and I'm like, it's February and she's freezing, you know what I mean. But of course they don't know that anyway. It's also good, okay, so wait then, wait, this is when I go to MoMA. I'm at MoMA. Yes, I had forgotten that this is when that is. I love that guy, Oh my god, I love that guy so much. So Grant I was so sad about that he had to do the ending that he did, but I didn't remember him. It is funny, but I didn't remember it at all. I just remember MoMA. I remember being so thrilled, and I remember really rehearsing my talk, which you can really tell that Kristen really rehearsed her talk so that Charlotte would be good at her talk about the art. And I remember being so nervous to be there because it was a really big deal that they let me actually be there in front of the Pollock, you know, and every day it's like so amazing. But I'd fully forgotten the tray and Buddy show up. I'm like, what what? And should all over the impressionists exactly which is insane, but also apparently this is the last time that they're seen in the show. But I remember them him not Bunny, but him coming at that fake pool party scene where Harry has the hair on his back, right, which I think they got cut from. I do think he got Yeah, he got cut from. And I need to ask Kyle about that because I remember him being there in a pink shirt and it was sad. It was sad for Charlotte and like a torn thing. And was she embarrassed to be with Harry because I think she was torn. I think she was torn, you know what I mean. Like, on the one hand, I think.

Speaker 1: That, yeah, which she didn't seem to really care about, which is interesting, right, But I think it's also like the jextaposition is so extreme by that point, like with the Harry back and everything. Harry's Harry and blah blah blah, and then Trey's so perfect, you know, but Trey's so empty for her at that point, right, and Harry's really vivid and you know, taking over, right, right. But I do remember he was like across the pool and he's leaving, and I remember being sad. Maybe I was sad, maybe Charlotte was sad, maybe both of us were sad. I don't know, right, but then it was I think it wasn't a button enough for Michael. I would have to ask Michael what happened, right, But I think he wanted it to be more of a like a button, and it was it wasn't. I don't think what he wanted. I don't know. I have to ask him. But that was interesting. But apparently this is the last time you're going to see Trey. He walks through the museum with Bunny sad.

Speaker 2: But yeah, I know thinks Sir Charlotte sad and makes her need to move on. But I would just if I was. I mean, I'm sure I would be sad too, but if I was Charlotte, I would be like those people laughing at the impressionist. Thank god I got away from them totally.

Bunny is the problem with the whole. But that he's just like her, you know what I mean. He's he's chosen her. He's never getting away from her, right, you know what I mean? M in arm. Yeah, it's soick. It's so ick, but he love Franny so much that it's hard to be totally icked out. But I did really like him, and I thought when he first shows up at the tour, I thought, well, I don't remember this guy, Like this is an option, you know what I mean? But obviously no, because and this is what I was wondering when you watch that, And so basically, this handsome guy's on the tour that Charlotte's doing at moment. He's been there before. She goes, oh, you're familiar, because yes, I've been here before. And then he says, I'm trying to, you know, get up the courage to ask you out, and she says no. Then she sees training Bunny, She's like, yes, let's go to dinner. They go to dinner. Everything's going great. Because he's also been divorced. I have a similar experience, right, and he says something to the effect of my wife and I didn't have the same values or something, right, the same background values, something like that culture.

Speaker 1: But then what's interesting is that then when they go to her apartment, he's like, wow, this is so big. I live in the studio, Like I thought, Oh, Charlotte's having that moment of like, oh, we don't have the same background, I don't have this, right, Okay, it is. I wasn't dreaming that. Yeah, Okay, it's good. It's so good. It is because he can't he can't be quiet about it. But she thought hard for that apartment. I guess she's still fighting. It's not done yet, right, right, but like it's a big deal for her to have that apartment and she's not going to be shamed about it or feel uncomfortable about it or whatever, right, or just there's no future if he's so you can't get over it or whatever. Right, Totally, totally, it's interesting. I like that. And it was so quick. They did it so quick, right, But.

I didn't remember any It is such a terrible piece of art. Thank you for saying it, because I was like it, thought that was a good idea. Well, I think it's a great idea when it gets smashed totally. That's also that he doesn't want to hang it in the room that she wants to because it's bad. Okay, Samantha, that's bad art.

Speaker 2: I think the idea of it being so terrible is that Samantha has so little experience being romantic m that she's doing it on a like a kindergarten level, like it has hearts.

Speaker 1: That means I love you. That's adorable, right, She's so buddy, Yeah, because she does not this is not her area, but it's so horrible. It's so bad. It's it's so bad ugly, it's so ugly and sad, and and he's supposed to be so worldly and he's just trying to sit there. I mean, I was kind of on his side in that moment of like, and she's like, hey, hang it right there, and he's like and they do that weird shot where he hugs her and you can see his face. He's like, oh yeah, but he's not. He doesn't totally go. He just exactly right, which is really entertaining. But then of course it doesn't end up going anywhere because he is in fact lying and she catches him with her wig, which is all so incredibly enjoyable. The wig part. I feel like that could be a whole you know, separate and how.

Speaker 2: They mentioned something about you know, she They make a reference, They explain how she got upstairs, like she's snuck in's breaking and entering, breaking in right, Like they don't they don't just make it like magic that she's But I.

Speaker 1: Was also kind of like, like, it's interesting, it's an interesting combo. It's also like there's so many things and this came up when we were doing and just like that. There's so many times when people just walk up to Carrie's door, even though she has the buzzer. But I know Michael Patrick was always like, we don't have time in the show to show her, but I was. I was glad they in the narration. She did something in the narration to acknowledge that she's somehow, somehow magically in Richard's apartment, which on the upstairs or whatever. Yeah, I like that a lot. Okay, wait, let's go back to you, because I don't know that we really covered all of the things. Isn't it funny that after you have Brady, the voiceover says in just like that lifetime, I noticed it to change, but also previously we say it all the time. Well, I guess he knows that. I guess he does, because I remember when they said that was the title of our show. When we came back, I was like, what I know. I know. I tried to come up with alternate titles. I didn't have any. Look, that's adorable. It's hard to come up with the title. It's really hard. And I have grown to love it. Yeah, I do too, But it took time. Yes, but now when I rewatch. We say it all all the time, I'd say almost like maybe every third episode or something like at one point, it's so much that I'm just like that, but there and there and there and there, But here's the most significant time that I love so much because it is and I love that thing about it was like there's a giraffe in the room.

And I love that Steve went to the where they take the baby first to check on everything. That seemed very real. Yeah, whatever, t warm warming tray, very good, very good. I thought that seemed.

Speaker 1: They've each got there responsibility right, and that is pretty much what you said you want it. So I liked that part of it. But I also thought, I mean, it's super The thing that I liked about it was kind of like, because you make all these references coming up with a baptism, that carry is not maternal, which is so funny, right, because Sarah Juska is so maternal. When I watch it, I feel so so much the collective like baby thing, you know. And I think I felt it at the time from you guys, you know what I mean, not necessarily for myself. And then we've got it in the plot and I'm curious to ask. I'm so curious to ask Cindy if that was intentional, like an idea that they thought, well, we wanted to do this idea, or that they were feeling that. I'm curious. I feel it seeping in and I don't know if it's because of you guys right in life, but I feel it, And like when they put the baby in Sarah's hands, I feel that like fem and an urge to have a baby so present, do you know. Yeah, I don't know if that's just because I know what was going on in life or whatever, you know what I mean. But I love it. I think it's so real.

Speaker 2: And when you eventually have your water break because you're yelling at Big in the movie, where where does that happen? At a restaurant, at a restaurant. Inside the restaurant.

Speaker 1: No, outside, I'm in the restaurant. I'm all pregnant. I've gone shot and chase him out. No, I leave, I run. I see him at the restaurant. I'm like, oh, I've got to go. Oh, I've got to go. I'm really upset because like he has I think he's abandoned. No, it's the first thing. It's after the he's abandoned her the right So of course I can never speak to him again. But that was the first scene I shot of the movie.

Speaker 1: Me, and I'm yelling at him and I'm I curse the day you were born. And my water break right right, right right right, but not exactly on his feet but almost. It's kind of an interesting Yeah, it's kind of an interesting thing. They're so blended in my mind. I agree, they're blended in my mind also, and it's hard for me to remember the actual order of things because that was the first scene I filmed in the movie, which I thought was weird because I thought it was supposed to be a secret that I was pregnant or whatever. I was like out on the street and there was like two hundred people, do you know what I mean? And you know, I had to shout at him, and I thought we were giving away so much, right, Like I was really stressed, but you know, Michael does what Michael does, you know what I mean? And it all worked out. It all worked out. People didn't really know, you know, the And you.

I feel like we see them so we see she still got them on, right, But I mean I think we see them in her closet later. I think about because if I think about other shows that I try to, you know, watch now, I mean, there's no show like ours, obviously, but you know, it's not an easy thing to hold these tensions, tensions over time. And I think it's a testament to our writers one hundred percent, but also to the acting that he can go and do all these crazy things and you can see him and she's with Aiden, but he's there still and you're just like eh, but yet you understand somehow and then they the connection's still there and it can rekindle. Like it's just like life.

Yeah, he was having a friend. It's great having a friend. It was cute, and it was cute that he's down there because it's the opposite of the Also the cliche that the guy and wanted to be down there. But he's like, no, I'm going to do all of it, you know, which is great.

Like, it's also like the moment where they go up and to the shoes when Carrie's trying to get the perfect outfit for the final dinner with Big and she sees the shoes and she says, hello, lover. I thought that was way back like in season two or whatever. It's interesting that we're still able to kind of do the kind of like funny, frothy things within all this drama that they've created. With the writing, you know, it's kind of amazing, like you're having a baby. She's running around in a wig, a rock cal welch wig, you know, trying to catch Richard cheating, which she does. I mean, it's a very it's brave writing, you know, like to juxtapose all the things at once, right, but they seem real, Like even when she's got the wig on and she's hiding and she's kind of comically doing it, it's still you believe it, you know, like it's such a departure for her, also for Samantha doing that. It's interesting. I can't stand him though at this point frankly mister right, yes, yes, yes, And I don't remember, like did we plan to keep him around so long? I don't know. And then they get back together. Do they get back together?

But we'd never really see bags whole perspective, you know, which is fine because normally that's the perspective we'd be living in. But I love her her lengthy voiceover where she talks about. She says, maybe our mistakes, or what make our fate so good right without them, would shape our lives. Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn't fall in love, or have babies or be who we are. After all, seasons change, so do others. So do the cities. Oh, seasons change, so do cities. This is what he changed D nine to eleven. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart and if you're very lucky, play right away. So good, isn't it? Yeah, it's so good that we consider twenty five years later. So it's just a picture that floats around in the world that no one knows what it is because the scene never aired. And what Michael said was, I never cut Willie. So I remember the one scene that I ever cut Willy, which was from the movie. Wow, I love that. I know me too, But it's such a great picture. They're in the village somewhere. They look amazing that I had thought, well, maybe they did do that, because I do remember this pressure of like, we need you guys to be on the street function film right, like business, yes, and we've got to kind of get ourselves together, you know, after the whole you know, it had been kind of a a long time of recovery. It seemed like, though, I think we went back, you know what in February, right right, Because that's the other thing I think when I'm watching the next refreezing Old and you're in the rains, and remember they make you wait in the rain with when am Mira is coming, You're like, I'm waiting in the rain, and I'm like, it's February and she's freezing, you know what I mean. But of course they don't know that anyway. It's also good, okay, so wait then, wait, this is when I go to MoMA. I'm at MoMA. Yes, I had forgotten that this is when that is. I love that guy, Oh my god, I love that guy so much. So Grant I was so sad about that he had to do the ending that he did, but I didn't remember him. It is funny, but I didn't remember it at all. I just remember MoMA. I remember being so thrilled, and I remember really rehearsing my talk, which you can really tell that Kristen really rehearsed her talk so that Charlotte would be good at her talk about the art. And I remember being so nervous to be there because it was a really big deal that they let me actually be there in front of the Pollock, you know, and every day it's like so amazing. But I'd fully forgotten the tray and Buddy show up. I'm like, what what? And should all over the impressionists exactly which is insane, but also apparently this is the last time that they're seen in the show. But I remember them him not Bunny, but him coming at that fake pool party scene where Harry has the hair on his back, right, which I think they got cut from. I do think he got Yeah, he got cut from. And I need to ask Kyle about that because I remember him being there in a pink shirt and it was sad. It was sad for Charlotte and like a torn thing. And was she embarrassed to be with Harry because I think she was torn. I think she was torn, you know what I mean. Like, on the one hand, I think.

I was glad they in the narration. She did something in the narration to acknowledge that she's somehow, somehow magically in Richard's apartment, which on the upstairs or whatever. Isn't it funny that after you have Brady, the voiceover says in just like that lifetime, I noticed it to change, but also previously we say it all the time. Well, I guess he knows that. I guess he does, because I remember when they said that was the title of our show. When we came back, I was like, what I know. I know. I tried to come up with alternate titles. I didn't have any. Look, that's adorable. It's hard to come up with the title. It's really hard. And I have grown to love it. Yeah, I do too, But it took time. Yes, but now when I rewatch. We say it all all the time, I'd say almost like maybe every third episode or something like at one point, it's so much that I'm just like that, but there and there and there and there, But here's the most significant time that I love so much because it is and I love that thing about it was like there's a giraffe in the room.

When I watch it, I feel so so much the collective like baby thing, you know. And I think I felt it at the time from you guys, you know what I mean, not necessarily for myself. And then we've got it in the plot and I'm curious to ask. I'm so curious to ask Cindy if that was intentional, like an idea that they thought, well, we wanted to do this idea, or that they were feeling that. I'm curious. I feel it seeping in and I don't know if it's because of you guys right in life, but I feel it, And like when they put the baby in Sarah's hands, I feel that like fem and an urge to have a baby so present, do you know. I think about because if I think about other shows that I try to, you know, watch now, I mean, there's no show like ours, obviously, but you know, it's not an easy thing to hold these tensions, tensions over time. And I think it's a testament to our writers one hundred percent, but also to the acting that he can go and do all these crazy things and you can see him and she's with Aiden, but he's there still and you're just like eh, but yet you understand somehow and then they the connection's still there and it can rekindle. Like it's just like life.
