Happy “Weed Day”!  How 4/20 Became An International Holiday

We’ve all known for years that 4/20 is a day for weed lovers to celebrate and unite in their passion for smoking weed. But do you know how it all came about? There are plenty of competing theories, but we share the actual origins of what’s become an international day of celebrating. We also talk about the impact the rise of weed has had on alcohol sales and just how big and booming the marijuana industry is becoming in this country.

00:00:02
Speaker 1: And that folks, it is Monday, April twentieth, and we're gonna get you high today. And welcome to this episode, this THC infused episode of Babe INTJ. Happy for twenty everybody, everybody. It's not quite officially robes and a national holiday, but it's it's national holiday.

00:00:24
Speaker 2: It's an unofficial international holiday. I would actually go so far as to say, yeah, it's people just are now saying happy weed Day.

00:00:31
Speaker 3: That's kind of.

00:00:32
Speaker 2: How people roll now on these more modern four twenties.

00:00:36
Speaker 3: It wasn't always like.

00:00:37
Speaker 1: That, but it was. It also was not do I have it right? Robes. It wasn't about the date. It was about a time. And now this thing has evolved to have that rest Do most people even know that? So you don't have to wait in once a year for four twenty to celebrate Oh no, no, no, no, every day at four twenty in the afternoon you're supposed to celebrate this.

00:00:58
Speaker 2: So that became the basically the accepted time where it's okay to start smoking pot. But the origins are really interesting because I had no idea how four twenty came about. Obviously I've become aware of it, but maybe later than most to figuring out that this was the day where people around the world celebrate the smoking of marijuana, and at four twenty on four twenty the world is united in their love of pots.

00:01:27
Speaker 1: And what is the what is the what's the right terminology these days for marijuana because it comes as you can smoke it, you've got gummies, you got all this other stuff. But you just said pot and it sounded like an old Yeah.

00:01:42
Speaker 3: Because I am, and that's what we used to call it back in the day. But what is hot?

00:01:46
Speaker 1: What is it now? Is it?

00:01:47
Speaker 3: Wead marijuana?

00:01:49
Speaker 1: Sometimes people say my THC edibles.

00:01:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot of different ways to describe it because there's a lot of different forms that comes in now. Obviously, back when we were it was people would roll joints and that was just marijuana came in that form. Now, obviously we've got edibles, we've got THHC infused drinks and products. You can you can bake it, you can give oils, you can you can put it in just about anything.

00:02:14
Speaker 1: Oh that's funny. I have a pain cream yes that I got from the marijuana store.

00:02:20
Speaker 2: THC basically like yes to heal inflammation. When you're an athlete. Yes, there are all sorts of forms and uses, and this has been part of the cry to legalize it for decades now because there are so many wonderful uses of this natural plant from the hemp plant.

00:02:39
Speaker 3: Correct.

00:02:40
Speaker 1: And if I don't know all this, hey man, I just I just see if it's ten milligrams or not. That's all.

00:02:46
Speaker 3: I just enjoy the effects of it.

00:02:49
Speaker 1: But yes, I didn't. I thought more states robes. But as we were getting into this, folks, yes, on this April twentieth, on this four to twenty, happy wee day to you, I thought, actually there were more states that had legalized marijuana. I didn't realize a lot of states still said no to recreational use. I guess the movement kind of started a decade plus ago, but we're still only up to about half of the states in the US. Yeah, have legalized it for recreational use.

00:03:19
Speaker 3: So that's sorry.

00:03:19
Speaker 2: Twenty twelve, it was Washington State and Colorado, not surprising who led the way. But right now, twenty four states and Washington DC have legalized marijuana for recreational use, Forty states in DC allow medical marijuana use, and only one state in this country has no legal access no matter what.

00:03:40
Speaker 3: Do you know what state that is? Idaho?

00:03:43
Speaker 2: I would never have guessed that. I would not have thought that. To me, that's an offter grid. It's right next to Washington State. Colorado's right there. They're the outliers in that area of the country, which is interesting.

00:03:55
Speaker 3: And then there are nine other states that.

00:03:57
Speaker 2: Allow CBD and low THHC products to be available for medical use.

00:04:03
Speaker 3: I mean, it's very confusing.

00:04:05
Speaker 2: Actually, USA Today has a great map showing exactly what states allow what.

00:04:12
Speaker 1: Oh, okay, that's sorry, she's she just took a hit before we started the episode. It's okay, but swear it's okay. It's fine. It's four twenty. Today is the day you live in New York. It's it's legal here, at least on the local level. It's okay. You know, don't be embarrassed, baby, So you'd like to take a hit in the morning.

00:04:33
Speaker 2: Before we get started drinking water is not a big Dealroy, and I'm not smoking.

00:04:38
Speaker 1: It's not taboo anymore, sweetheart. We're talking about this today. Yeah, get it out, baby, get it out of them, lone.

00:04:44
Speaker 3: I feel like it's taboo when you're working, no matter.

00:04:47
Speaker 1: What to be smoking while you're working. Yes, oh okay.

00:04:50
Speaker 2: Even though construction crews all around this country do nothing but what I pass the construction site, I have to hold my breath unless I want to get high.

00:04:59
Speaker 1: Don't hold against all construction workers out there.

00:05:02
Speaker 3: Okay, maybe just in New York City.

00:05:04
Speaker 1: On that one block for those two guys that we see all the time. That's right, But no, I was surprised. Those upstates still a ways to go. And yes, as a reminder here, folks, this stuff still is illegal on a federal level. They don't mess with the states generally, it's not something that's in force. But yes, on a federal level, we're still talking about a drug that is illegal. And we're still talking about something now as we sit here in twenty twenty six. And this has been a trend for the past couple of years, Robes, is that we have more people in this country that are daily marijuana users than we have alcohol drinkers. It has been going that way for years now. We keep talking about alcohol use going down, down, down, and yeah, marijuana uses going off up up.

00:05:47
Speaker 3: Isn't that interesting us?

00:05:48
Speaker 2: In twenty twenty four, that was when I believe several publications announced for the first time ever, more Americans use marijuana on a daily or near daily basis rather than daily drinking.

00:06:02
Speaker 3: That is a significant shift.

00:06:04
Speaker 2: And so the cannabis industry is booming and the alcohol industry is declining. And a lot of people say that's a good thing because it's marijuana use. It's health conscious gen zers who believe that any amount and we're hearing this from doctors now, any amount of alcohol is dangerous.

00:06:21
Speaker 3: It is literally poison.

00:06:22
Speaker 2: And so alcohol industry is blaming the decline that they're seeing on cannabis use and dry January, which is actually really kicking them in the butt. And some people are calling it, did you realize this high January? So it's now going from being dry January to high January. And then what happens is people are enjoying how they feel during high January. They don't get hung over, they don't wake up feeling groggy with a headache, and.

00:06:50
Speaker 3: They say, why am I drinking so much? I should just make the switch.

00:06:53
Speaker 2: And there are now beverages where you can have that glass in your hand with some ice cubes and THHC beverages eight hundred and fifty million and twenty twenty five. Those are the sales in twenty twenty eight. They think that's going to reach four billion. That's just how much this industry is booming. It's remarkable.

00:07:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, and kind of keep going that direction.

00:07:17
Speaker 2: I suppose California sober is now becoming everywhere. All right, So do you know the origins of for twenty bibe?

00:07:24
Speaker 1: I mean, yes, we know about this story now because we've researched it, but I always thought it had to do with the band.

00:07:30
Speaker 3: Great First All Day.

00:07:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, see you knew that. I didn't know anything. I had no idea. There are a lot of competing theories. Some people thought it was the police code for when they were catching somebody using marijuana.

00:07:41
Speaker 3: Not true.

00:07:42
Speaker 2: Some people thought it was the number of active chemicals and weed not true.

00:07:47
Speaker 3: Some people even said it was Bob Marley's birthday.

00:07:49
Speaker 2: And I know it's not Bob Marley's birthday because Bob Marley and I were born on the same day and our birthdays are not. For twenty and then Bob dylansong, have you heard this one rainy day woman? Number twelve and number thirty five. If you take twelve and thirty five, it equals four to twenty. That's how much people were trying to figure out where four twenty came from.

00:08:08
Speaker 1: No, it's not that complicated. It just has to do with a punch of knucklehead teenagers. That's pretty much.

00:08:14
Speaker 2: Yet, isn't That doesn't seem possible that five high school students in San Rafael, California, back in nineteen seventy one coined the phrase for twenty.

00:08:27
Speaker 1: I say they coined, right. They weren't coining a phrase. They were just picking a time, were they not.

00:08:33
Speaker 2: They had a meeting time where they would hang out. Apparently they were looking for some abandoned cannabis crop left behind by the grower on a treasure map, some sort of silly thing that high school students would do. And they would meet at this statue at four twenty and they would smoke weed and they would try to figure out how to find this crop that they never found because they were too high to figure it out.

00:08:56
Speaker 1: All right? Was still it? That sounds a little local? How did we get from some high schoolers in San Rafel to now an international holiday? Well? There does now come into it a band connection?

00:09:09
Speaker 3: Yes.

00:09:09
Speaker 2: So one of they were called the Waldos because they would hang out and lean against a wall.

00:09:14
Speaker 3: Again. This all sounds so hot Harfit, right, It totally does.

00:09:20
Speaker 2: So one of the group members of the Waldos became a group a roadie for the Grateful Dead bassist, and so they started to call for four twenty to be the time where everybody started smoking pot. And then some Oakland Deadheads in nineteen ninety distributed a flyer inviting people to smoke on April twentieth at four to twenty pm. That flyer then got picked up by a I guess a burgeoning magazine or a publication called The High Times, and they published this flyer and from there it became the day that it is. Now. It's spread like wildfire across the States and internationally to now be known as the unofficial day to enjoy weed consumption.

00:10:12
Speaker 1: It's fun, it's I think this is of all the days of the holiday, this one's not controversial, is it. I think it's kind of it's just a fun day. And most people these days don't need an excuse to use marijuana. We got forty to fifty million folks in the country, they say, use this stuff on a regular basis, So it's just kind of a it's fun I guess we're getting away from and a lot of people say it's it does do it has done its damage, that not suggesting the same way that alcohol might. But it has also done damage to communities, to people's home lives, to people's work. To write, there are some impacts, but at the same time, rocause we're still talking about something people can have a little fun with. And if we can take a break on a day like this, and I don't know, maybe if you wouldn't normally light one up, take a hit, and just let your problem just be what they are for today.

00:11:12
Speaker 2: Well, and to that point, we actually when we come back, we're going to tell you there are observances today in honor of International WE Day.

00:11:20
Speaker 3: Will tell you where they are.

00:11:22
Speaker 2: And how you too can participate on this for twenty Welcome back everyone to this episode, this very happy episode of Amy and TJ.

00:11:41
Speaker 3: Because it is WE Day, it is four twenty.

00:11:44
Speaker 2: It is time to let your problems just melt away, have a little fun, laugh a little more than you would have normally.

00:11:52
Speaker 1: You got your cough under control.

00:11:54
Speaker 3: I do have my.

00:11:54
Speaker 2: Cough under control, yes, and by the way, I don't smoke at all, So just want to make that clear.

00:12:00
Speaker 1: We are people are not holding it against you. What is the big deal? Sweet, It's fine.

00:12:06
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:12:07
Speaker 2: So if you are looking to partake, what do you think about four to twenty on four to twenty like to actually wait until that time to feel like you're a part of a communal activity.

00:12:19
Speaker 1: I mean, you can do it. You don't have to wait until that time. You can do it at that time also, But that's a long time to be waiting all day to do what you want.

00:12:28
Speaker 3: To do, especially if you get up at three am like you do.

00:12:32
Speaker 1: No.

00:12:32
Speaker 3: But I actually got a kick out of this.

00:12:34
Speaker 2: There are observances and I was laughing at the places where you would obviously choose or guess where they might be. Ann Arbor, Michigan has what they call hashbash today. Some of the other celebrations, they actually tell you where to meet on campus, but these are mostly college campuses. Berkeley Shocking about to be the next thing out of my mouth, Boulder where my nineteen year old attends. Yes on the campus at the Universe of Colorado, Boulder, that is where they're going to be gathering. Boston, Boston Common, Denver Civic Center Park, New York City, Washington Square, Park. You know, that's where all the NYU students are always. That is absolutely the park I would pick in the city that they would be gathering.

00:13:15
Speaker 3: San Francisco.

00:13:16
Speaker 1: I don't know.

00:13:16
Speaker 2: You might know this Hippie Hill that's where they're all gathering today.

00:13:20
Speaker 1: Apparently didn't spend a lot of time on Hippy Hill.

00:13:22
Speaker 2: When I lived in the He is a Hippie Hill connoisseur. But then they have Saint Louis, DC is on the National Mall because it's legal there. I guess you never know when you travel now within the States, especially internationally, I always assume it's not legal because we actually have kind.

00:13:42
Speaker 3: Of paved the way here.

00:13:43
Speaker 2: But Montreal, Portland, Santa Cruz, Saint Louis, Toronto, Vancouver, the United Kingdom, Slovenia, Melbourne, Sydney, New Zealand all having celebrations. They'll tell you where to go and where to meet if you want to be a part of it.

00:13:57
Speaker 3: But they a lot of places leaning into this day.

00:14:01
Speaker 1: Toronto, the meeting place is just downtown. I have never smelled a smokier city than Toronto. I don't know what y'all are doing every block, every every Toronto. I don't know what's happen in downtown, but it just what is the crime rate? I don't know, really low, probably really low or really high, I don't I don't know.

00:14:23
Speaker 3: You're too high to commit a crime. So that's the thing.

00:14:26
Speaker 2: Like alcohol, obviously we've seen the effects of it creating rage and depression. It feels like pot's the exact opposite, like you can't even get your shit together enough to commit a crime, like you can't be angry enough because it just doesn't matter anymore.

00:14:41
Speaker 3: You know, I understand.

00:14:43
Speaker 2: Clearly you should be operating any sort of vehicle or any sort of anything that would require or could potentially be dangerous, because yeah, you get a little sloppy, but.

00:14:54
Speaker 3: It is something.

00:14:55
Speaker 2: It is interesting to see the shift, this massive shift taking place in our country and then eventually rother world. But it certainly isn't the same in Europe. It's very strict. You do not you can't walk down the street in New York City. You talk about Toronto, talk about New York. When I'm running, I think that's when it's really annoying, because I don't want to be breathing in pot when I'm running. But you cannot help it. It is everywhere. That's why edibles are better. They affect no one else.

00:15:22
Speaker 1: Then, don't run in Toronto ever.

00:15:24
Speaker 2: Okay, by the way, this is kind of funny, you know how they have the national day They always have, like some random national day of cherry pie eating or whatever. It was noted on in one of the articles I was reading that just also by chance, today is also National Cheddar Fries Day and National Pineapple Upside Down Cake Day in case anyone has the munchies.

00:15:45
Speaker 3: They just want to let people know it's.

00:15:47
Speaker 2: Okay to have cheddar fries and pineapple upside down cake today because they're also celebrating for.

00:15:52
Speaker 1: Twenty Okay, yeah, everybody, just have one big o on the healthy twenty four hours. Just knock yourself out. Pineapple upside down cake and Chetti fries.

00:16:02
Speaker 3: Yeah, I wouldn't.

00:16:02
Speaker 2: I wouldn't suggest eating them together. Maybe pick one and go with that.

00:16:06
Speaker 1: Oh my word, man, throw in some I don't know, some bacon wrapped onion rings or something.

00:16:12
Speaker 3: You're a cool ranch to Rito's kind of guy.

00:16:14
Speaker 1: Uh yeah, that's only once a year, do I get that?

00:16:18
Speaker 3: I guess that's today.

00:16:19
Speaker 2: So anyway, we hope you all find some way to celebrate along with the rest of the world on this happiest of international holidays. Look, we don't usually get to start the day with something fun, so we thought, why not, of all days, why not do it on.

00:16:33
Speaker 1: FOD Encouraged Drug Usetch.

00:16:36
Speaker 2: No, no, no, only if it's legal, and only if you're of age, and only if you aren't operating heavy machinery.

00:16:41
Speaker 1: It's illegal everywhere in the US, you know, federally. Federally, yeah, bill isn't illegal. That's so perfect for.

00:16:48
Speaker 3: The United States.

00:16:49
Speaker 2: We can't even agree between our federal government and our states, and we can't agree among our states.

00:16:54
Speaker 3: It's a whole mess. But you know what, who cares.

00:16:57
Speaker 1: Because we all had to day. We don't care. Where's funny?

00:17:00
Speaker 3: All right with that?

00:17:01
Speaker 2: Everyone, thank you for listening to us. We always appreciate you. Hope you have a wonderful day. We've got a lot more come in your way, so please stay tuned.

00:17:08
Speaker 3: To our feed. I made me robock alongside TJ. Holmes. We will talk to you soon.
