Even if You Don't Fly Spirit, We’re All About to Pay For What Happened Overnight

A shocking development overnight, ultra low cost carrier, Spirit Airlines, has completely shut down. Its website tells customers not to go to the airport, its customer service is shuttered and 17 thousand employees are waking up with no job. The airline said rising fuel costs were the final nail in its coffin, and despite an 11th hour possible bailout deal with President Trump, the airline said it had no choice but to “begin this wind-down.” The fear now, most experts believe this will lead to higher ticket prices across all airlines, without low fare competition from Spirit.

Speaker 1: Hey, the folks, it is Saturday, May second, and your flight is canceled, and your flight is canceled, and your flight is canceled, everybody's flight is canceled. If you are a Spirit Airlines customer, the airline overnight shut down. It's over, it's done, and we should all be disappointed, no matter if you're a Spirit Airlines customer or not.

00:00:28
Speaker 2: And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. Robes.

00:00:31
Speaker 1: They have a notice on their website telling folks do not go to the airport if you're a Spirit Airlines customer.

00:00:38
Speaker 2: This is stunning.

00:00:39
Speaker 3: This is stunning because think about it, it is May second, and you've got basically folks who have tickets for spring getaways, summer vacation plans, tickets booked. This is a surreal situation because there is no customer service in place, so you have really no way of contacting the airline trying to figure out what to do if there's any change you can make.

00:01:06
Speaker 4: You are just so l that is true.

00:01:09
Speaker 2: There is nothing to be done.

00:01:10
Speaker 1: We should say here at the top that you should be able to get your money back. Spirit Airlines has already said that's not going to be an issue, So that isn't going to be the problem. But the problem is robes everything you just describe, given the timing and given where the industry is right now with the war quite frankly, and yes they did tell us that gas prices played into this, but ropes is not a good sign for an industry. And what happens now in the busy season to all those people on Spirit are scrambling to go where find somewhere else to get on a flight. So it's going to put a strain. And yes, ticket prices are going to go up because demand just went off.

00:01:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, And the problem is, I'm thinking about all these folks who have pre paid. Obviously, you've paid for your tickets and maybe months in advance, at least weeks in advance, and now you have a website that's completely defunct and says there's no customer service, there's no way to reach out. They claim they're bringing or giving you your refund back, but how do you secure it? How do you say you want it, how do you ask for it? How do you know it's coming? And if you're not getting that refund back, how do you afford the next ticket? You know, usually if something happens with your airline and they cancel your flight, they'll rebook you and there won't be any cost to you if it's their fault. Now you've got a situation where you might have to wait I don't know how long to get your money back for the tickets you paid for, and you might not have that extra cash to repurchase another ticket. I mean, this is a tough, tough situation for thousands and thousands of people, and.

00:02:34
Speaker 1: Airlines will explain other airlines are trying to step up and help out. We don't know how much help will be with right now, any little bit will help. And as we talk about the strain on the industry, as we talk about the strain on many many customers right now, we do have to keep in mind, Robes when we hear numbers like this of any industry, and any industry you in, any company talks about the numbers of jobs being lost, Robes, this is a big number of people who overnight don't have a job.

00:03:03
Speaker 3: Seventeen thousand people have just lost their jobs.

00:03:07
Speaker 4: And look, I'm sure they were concerned.

00:03:09
Speaker 3: There's obviously been talk about the financial woes of Spirit Airlines and the fact that it's declared bankruptcy. And the fact that we all knew President Trump said he was trying to work something out to booy up Spirit Airlines while they got through this fuel price increase, at least to get past this point, past the Iran war, past these surging prices. But it truly happened in the blink of an eye. Yes there were concerns, and yes you were worried, but I don't know that anyone expected it to just go belly up in a matter of a couple hours and boom, everyone's waking up to this news that they weren't necessarily expecting.

00:03:50
Speaker 1: Well, it would lets you know about just how dire their situation was. Behind the scenes, they said they're going to wind down operations. We thought we might see something that says May fifteenth will be flight. It's just over every single flight. There is nothing else flying. In fact, this company told us what the last flight was, what Detroit to Dallas that landed last night was the last Spirit Airlines flight that will ever fly. And Rob we were listening this morning and it was sad to hear air traffic controllers and pilots from other airlines via the radio given love to these Spirit Airlines pilots who were landing for the last time landing to no job.

00:04:32
Speaker 3: It was, oh, you played it this morning and it was really sad. The air traffic controller basically saying, hey, good luck. Was it the pilot who asked, are is there another Spirit Airlines flight coming in? And he said, I think you guys are the last ones that just hit hard. I can't imagine you're in the air flying a Spirit Airlines flight when you learn that you will never fly another Spirit Airlines plane again and again.

00:04:59
Speaker 1: This word came over at like two in the morning, two am. So yes, a lot of people are waking up, a lot of people in roads might be waking up.

00:05:06
Speaker 2: We're getting ready to head to the airport.

00:05:09
Speaker 3: It's Saturday morning and get on a.

00:05:10
Speaker 1: Spirit Airlines flight. Good Lord, that's true, Mabe. That just happened to a lot of people. So the message that was on their website front page Spirit Airlines again there's no booking and there's no checking on your reservation anymore. Everything is canceled. But they have this message of the front of their website saying it's with a great disappointment that on May second, twenty twenty six, Spirit Airlines started and orderly wind down of our operations effective immediately to our guests. All flights have been canceled. Customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra low cost model on the industry over the last thirty four years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come road. You used the word booied. I think said Trump was trying to find a package to BUI. Others were using the word bailout. And that's the problem here is that they thought they were putting more good money after bad money. Yes, we're gonna give you money, and it's just gonna help you survive a little longer, but it's not gonna help you get back to a point of being profitable. And so they finally just said nope. President said nope to it, and that was it. That is a wrap. You see this other statement here, Yes they did. And this is the one Robes where they absolutely mention. They don't say the Iran War, but Robes they mentioned. Oil prices absolutely played a role.

00:06:32
Speaker 3: Absolutely. We were talking the other day about how our nineteen year old Annalise was complaining about her gas price weekly increase as a college student. Now multiply that by I don't even know what, and you've got an already embattled airline teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. This is the last and final blow that I mean. They didn't need this, They couldn't They couldn't offset these costs. Here was their statement. The recent material curial, increase in oil prices, and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit's financial outlook. With no additional funding available to the company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind down. I do think it's funny they keep calling it a wind down. This was an abrupt end of all services period. I didn't see a wind down at all.

00:07:21
Speaker 1: It's a wind down for them, for the customer. It's just cutting the core.

00:07:26
Speaker 3: Because when I went to bed last night, Spirit Airlines was flying planes. When I woke up this morning, it's not flying another plane ever. Again, that doesn't seem like a wind down down one.

00:07:35
Speaker 1: That's again, I don't know the last time we saw. It's been decades though a major carrier shut down. I can't remember if it shut down immediately overnight. Of this just is how it works.

00:07:45
Speaker 2: I do not know.

00:07:45
Speaker 1: But let me ask you this, Robes, when was the last time or have you ever been on a Spirit Airlines flight?

00:07:53
Speaker 3: The answer is never. I have never been on a Spirit Airlines flight.

00:07:56
Speaker 2: How about you couldn't come up with one ever.

00:07:58
Speaker 3: I've been on Southwest. That's probably the closest to a budget carrier that I have been on. I've been on a Southwest plane, but I have never been on a Spirit airline and a.

00:08:06
Speaker 2: Lot of people have not.

00:08:08
Speaker 1: But just because you have not does not mean that this airline didn't play a significant role in your traveling history. Robes, you just said, I don't know if you did it, if you had to consciously think about it, but you just said Southwest and call them a budget or a low budget airline. You call Spirit an ultra low budget airline. They, Robes, pushed all of our favorite airlines, the Deltas, the Americans, the Uniteds of the world to drop fares. Spirit showed up, Robes. They have been the butt of jokes for decades. We hate their yellow planes.

00:08:47
Speaker 4: They're really obnoxious.

00:08:48
Speaker 1: Their customer service has always complained about They charge you for a carry on, they charge you to get a printed paper ticket.

00:08:56
Speaker 2: Even they have just been.

00:08:58
Speaker 1: They are consistently the lowest ranked customer service airline out there. They are literally is the country's least favorite airline. But Robes, they are the ones that came along started having such low fares. So then Delta, you're not in the others had to. You know, when you go book and it says basic.

00:09:19
Speaker 3: Yes, that you can't even bring a carry.

00:09:22
Speaker 1: On for all these other The reason these other airlines have a basic fare or these low because Spirit came along and started forcing them to drop fares, because people started booking the lowest priced ticket that they saw on those websites, and that was consistently Spirit.

00:09:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, and look that that gives people who wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford to fly somewhere, to travel somewhere. It gave them an opportunity to see the world, to see parts of this country even that they wouldn't have been able to see. And yeah, it did shape how other airlines competed and the prices they offered. I hadn't thought about it in those terms, but of course so it has been a significant has had a significant impact on all of our travel, regardless of what airline we've chosen.

00:10:12
Speaker 4: To fly.

00:10:13
Speaker 1: They are an industry changer, Robes, and I am sorry along the way that we haven't and I haven't. You don't appreciate something n til it's gone, right, but they did so much. They are an iconic airline that changed the industry, even if you never got on one of their planes. So they need to be giving credit for that and Robes doing that during I had no idea. They started out as a trucking company in the sixties and Michigan was it. Wow, I didn't know that, but that's They were a trucking company that moved things around, started buying a couple of planes and became an airline that moved things around.

00:10:47
Speaker 2: And they became an airline that moved people around. They started as a trucking company.

00:10:51
Speaker 3: It's like an organic Yeah, yes, I love that.

00:10:54
Speaker 1: They didn't start out to be this and became this thing pretty cool that changed the industry. So I have no idea, Robes how much a ticket costs. I've never considered taking a Spirit Airlines plane.

00:11:06
Speaker 2: But they're a big deal.

00:11:08
Speaker 3: Yeah they are. And now you know, this is something we all need to pay attention to now because without this, what is it ultra low cost carrier yep. Without that lower extremely low fare competition, YEP.

00:11:22
Speaker 4: It's likely.

00:11:23
Speaker 3: Most industry analysts believe it is highly likely. I believe I read that fares will go up for all of us because Spirit Airlines is no longer in business.

00:11:34
Speaker 1: Yes, so don't wake up and see this news. Oh, Spirit Airlines is out of business. I never flew them anywhay, admit I kind of thought that we are all about to see it. You give it, I mean, I don't know overnight, but give it a couple of days, a couple of weeks, you're going to go, Wow, that seems more expensive, and you won't even realize why, and they won't have to do with what just happened to Spirit Airlines. But to that point, Robes other airlines certainly recognize that this is going to be a big shift for the industry and it's going to impact a lot of customers. So stay here, we'll explain what other airlines already are trying to do to help out Spirit Airlines customers. All Right, we continue here on this. I guess travel industry changing. Saturday, you will not see another bright yellow plane in the sky because Spirit Airlines has shut down for good. The company couldn't make it out of a second bankruptcy. This is our second one since twenty twenty four, but they're in the middle of one nine. We're hoping to emerge out of it, and they're not going to be able to because they don't have money. The US government would not build them out. So overnight, Robes they shut down, not flying anymore. Every every ticket in every flight is canceled.

00:12:50
Speaker 2: This is it.

00:12:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, this literally happened while you were sleeping, while we were sleeping. We went to bed with one thing in mind. And now I just can't imagine if you had a trip plan today or tomorrow, because to scramble and try to find another way to your destination. I just think about all those people who had hotels, already paid for car service or at least a car rental already to go. What do they do now? That is just a nightmare scenario for the people who were traveling, and certainly for the people who work that airline.

00:13:18
Speaker 1: We're going to hear some stories of people who were going to weddings, funerals doing something. We're going to start. Those stories are going to emerge, and that's just awful. But ro seventeen thousand folks woke up without a job. Yeah, now they were concerned about their airline. I don't know how much of it heads up they got, but folks went to bed on a Friday night thinking they were going to have a job on Saturday.

00:13:39
Speaker 3: Morning, and that's a fair assumption to make.

00:13:42
Speaker 1: Damn on most days, that sucks. So others are trying to help out here. I just saw some reporting that trying to help out some of the employees as well, by starting to give preferential interviews or treatments or pushing them to the front of the lines in any of the employees who lost jobs. But also American Airlines at least is one of the first to put out a statement ropes saying there I hadn't heard this, but they called them rescue faares. I wasn't familiar with that, but they said they're putting rescue fares in place on Spirit routes where American also has NonStop service. So essentially they're trying to give folks the lowest possible fare to try to rebook.

00:14:22
Speaker 3: Yeah, on their I saw Frontier Airlines did the same thing. They said, we are ready to support customers who may be impacted if Spirit Airlines ceases operations. I guess this was before they actually made the announcement with a focus on helping people continue their travel plans with low fare options. So that is cool to see, and I believe United has also said they would step up and try to support customers who had Spirit Airline tickets who are now stranded.

00:14:48
Speaker 1: And even the idea Americans saying here that they would even on some of those routes maybe just make a switch of using a larger plane that has more capacity to get more folks on who now need a ride.

00:15:01
Speaker 4: So that's cool.

00:15:02
Speaker 2: Everybody's scrambling, that's the word to put. Everybody's scrambling.

00:15:06
Speaker 1: Bro from TSA shut downs, what was happening to the airport? This is going to be a little bit of a mess for a little while, and fairs are going to continue to go up. The war doesn't seem to be well, excuse me, the war is over according to the president.

00:15:22
Speaker 3: But what but oil ships are not getting through the strait of horror moves and so as long as that standoff continues, yes, yes, we're only going to see gas and fuel prices continue to rise.

00:15:33
Speaker 4: War over straight closed. That is where we are.

00:15:36
Speaker 3: And that the war could be going on and the street was open, that'd be better for us financially most likely, or at least the world, which is so much of it is run on fuel, and fuel prices impact every single person in the world.

00:15:54
Speaker 1: Okay, so now consider gas prices continue to go up. We are hitting that.

00:15:58
Speaker 2: It's made. Maybe we are hitting it.

00:16:00
Speaker 1: It's time to go on summer vacation for everybody, and everybody's going to hit with these fuel prices and your airport is going to be a mess again. Okay, see you at the midter. All right, folks, just want to give you the updates. And it's a tough point for the travel industry, but yes, Spirit Airlines is done and with that we appreciate you spending some time with us.

00:16:21
Speaker 2: My dear Ammy Robot, I'm t J. Holmes. Talk soon.
