D4vd Hearing Day 2: Air Fresheners, Blood Evidence And Why Celeste’s Parents Left The Courtroom
Prosecutors continued to present evidence to a California judge on Wednesday why singer D4vd should face a jury of his peers for the alleged murder and dismemberment of his underaged girlfriend Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Two LAPD criminalists were called to the stand to go over the evidence they uncovered at the singer’s Hollywood Hills home and inside the Tesla where Celeste’s decomposing remains were found by police. Investigators found blood throughout the garage and in his Tesla along with at least 11 air fresheners used to try and cover up the strong odor of decay. We also heard from Celeste’s family attorney who explained the reason why her parents chose to leave the courtroom midway through the hearing…. And it has everything to do with TODAY.

Speaker 1: Hey there everybody.
00:00:03
Speaker 2: It is Thursday, July twenty third, and it was another significant day in an LA court room where there was talk of blood evidence, air fresheners, and a big question as to why celeste parents left the courtroom early. And it's just day two of the David preliminary hearing that is taking place that has everybody talking and we'll get into it, but Babe, today is expected to be another significant day, another potentially gruesome day in testimony when it comes to what happened to fourteen year old Celestrevus Hernandez.
00:00:45
Speaker 3: I'm not sure how much they are going to get into this, but the medical examiner, the medical examiner, the person who was responsible for looking through for figuring out how remains that were by their accounts liquif how they were able to determine a cause of death. This is going to get into some some pretty heavy stuff today. And can't imagine what that family is going to be going through.
00:01:11
Speaker 1: Yes, it's truly unthinkable.
00:01:14
Speaker 2: And look, they sat through most of the testimony yesterday where there were several different witnesses called to the stand and among them there were two LAPD criminalists, two females actually Lauren Wallace and Chelsea Marillo were their names, and they went over all of the evidence that they uncovered in David's home and in that tesla that was parked just around the corner. We also heard from David's record label, or we should say former record label. They detailed his earnings that they provided to him over the last couple of years. But we'll start with the blood evidence, and there was a lot of it, and this is going to be integral when this thing goes to trial, if this goes to trial. But the first criminalists spoke about these black rubber mats in David's garage, just the fact that when they put that blue star is what they call it, but it's basically like a luminol type of material, that it just lit up. And from folks who were there in the courtroom, they said there was actually an audible gasp when they showed the photo of just how much of that blue lit up.
00:02:25
Speaker 3: Uh. Yes, So it makes sense. I can't imagine how horrific of a scene that must have been if what happened in that garage happened the way prosecutors say it.
00:02:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, and then the blood wasn't just on the mats, it was throughout the garage, it was on the rowing machine, it was on a green tarp. There were brown stained wipes, and a black trash bag. All of that tested positive for blood. But interestingly, the two chainsaws, and we've kind of talked about this, did not that they found in the garage did not have blood on that on them.
00:02:58
Speaker 1: But there's an explanation as to why one's missing.
00:03:03
Speaker 3: There's a chainsaw missing. The one they never were able to recover that they know he did, he did purchase it is one they have not recovered. So you could try to deduce there what that means, But it looks like these two. It is impossible to clean a chainsaw if you have cut through flesh and bone and blood. It's just impossible.
00:03:24
Speaker 1: And how do you get rid of a chainsaw?
00:03:26
Speaker 2: Like he couldn't get rid of the body in a way that it couldn't be found, but he got rid of a chainsaw.
00:03:32
Speaker 1: That's confusing to me.
00:03:34
Speaker 3: Uh yeah, I mean you could quite frankly, you could toss that in a dumpster and nobody would think much of it. There's a trash bag with a limb hanging out of it, so who knows he could have thrown it in a river he could have thrown I'm not I'm sorry. I don't mean to speculate about what, but but yeah, that's not exactly an item that would draw as much attention.
00:03:55
Speaker 2: I suppose, yes, but certainly that would be an item that would be very much well, it would be an important piece of evidence if this thing goes to trial, to have that actual chainsaw with DNA from Celesti on it.
00:04:08
Speaker 1: But they do not have it.
00:04:10
Speaker 2: They have looked exhaustively for it and it is nowhere to be found. And she had the prosecutor, had the la criminalist basically say, yeah, we have no idea where this third chainsaw is now there were there. It was interesting what they had to say about the inflatable pool. Yes, they found some blood when it came to the blue light, but they also said that he tried really hard to clean it.
00:04:35
Speaker 3: We talked about the sense and everything. I mean, we see this, you watch any true crime shows. How often folks will walk into a place and wow, we were overwhelmed by the smell of bleach and apparently there was these I'm not sure they didn't describe it as bleach.
00:04:54
Speaker 1: Like the.
00:04:56
Speaker 2: Fresh laundry scent I think was the actual phrase that was used fresh laundries, and I mean they even said there were dryer sheets stuck to this inflatable pool, so obviously he had tried to wash it. And interestingly, that blue star that luminol stuff still showed that even if you put something like that in the washing machine and you dry it, there is still evidence of blood. And they said that absolutely there were traces of blood on that inflatable pool. Now let's talk about the air fresheners. That certainly is making headlines. And look, with all the gruesome details that have come out in these preliminary hearings, and certainly with some of the evidence we already knew prosecutors had. I don't know why the air fresheners, It just it stands out.
00:05:41
Speaker 3: It's unique, and it's irrelevant.
00:05:43
Speaker 1: I know.
00:05:44
Speaker 3: I saw a lot of headlines and I kind of roll my eyes at them. I get what folks are getting at here, given the stench, given there was a body in there, it's in some way I don't know, it's like calling it explosive diarrhea. It's kind of one of those things kind of had line grabbing. You know, there was a body in this car and now telling everybody there were air fresheners in there. So he was trying to cover up something. I get it. This isn't it doesn't go that far and determining guilt or innocence. This is not some hard piece of evidence. But yes, people are running with the idea of the exact number of air fresheners that were in this car, like that was going to cover up the scent of a body.
00:06:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, you're gonna yes, Those headlines are everywhere. Nearly a dozen eleven air fresheners were found in the console, tucked in the real rear seat pockets. There was even one apparently underneath the bag where Celeste was. And I guess part of the just idea that it's bizarre because that is what he was trying to do to try and cover up this heinous act while he was, according to prosecutors, off just going about his tour, selling his album, going about his life, celebrating his success, got air fresheners in a car where they say he has his dead girlfriend sitting there for months.
00:07:07
Speaker 1: It's just unthinkable. I actually went and looked through his.
00:07:10
Speaker 2: His Instagram account, which is still live, and up and you can, you can scroll through it. And I was just looking through what he was posting right around the time that prosecutors say all of this was taking place, and it's just it makes your heart heavy, It just makes your just turns your stomach. And I think the air fresheners are a part of that, like somehow he just thought he could put a band aid over something that significant.
00:07:35
Speaker 3: I mean that goes to this entire scenario. I mean, take the air fresheners out and this whole so much of what he does or allegedly did, is in line. To be kind honest, I know it sounds a little kurt, but this is on brand. To think you can throw eleven air fresheners in a car and that's going to take care of it. To think that you could park a dead body in your car on an LA street and everything's going to be fine. Is bizarre That you can order chainsaws and body dumping material to your home with your credit card but use an alias, and we should be good saying it goes in line with some really unbelievably stupid decisions that somebody made, and he's alleged to have made them.
00:08:32
Speaker 2: Yes, and look This was a kid who had not been stupid though, you know, he had found wild success and it was all his own doing.
00:08:43
Speaker 1: He was self made.
00:08:44
Speaker 2: And yes they brought back up, well this was someone else, just to detail. Just again they're still trying to establish motive, but I think they've done a pretty good job so far, even in day one with who they brought up to the stand saying he made it upwards of eleven and a half million dollars over the past several years. But they even had the former record label the finance Guy, the VP of finance at Interscope was the name of his label. But this is all obviously in an effort to once again show the judge that David had a motive, that he was protecting a lucrative career, and so the record label themselves. This was in twenty twenty three, and this is when he was said to have begun his sexual relationship with Celeste. He made three point nine million dollars from the record label alone, that's fairly significant, and then another two and a half million in twenty twenty five. So this is a kid, once again who was well on his way and had been making millions and millions of dollars, and that was what was hanging in the balance because, reportedly Celesti the argument was that she didn't like I was actually seeing this on his Instagram when I was going through it, but she didn't like him talking to other girls. That's your understanding as well. That's where this fight all erupted from.
00:09:58
Speaker 3: Oh and that makes sense, but it just doesn't make sense to have a jealous girlfriend who is under the age of fifteen, under the age of fourteen, so that reaction, Yeah, I think most of us would hear that in normal adult relationships. Yes, that would be the case. It just shouldn't have I guess that goes to the depth of or at least her understanding of the depth of their relationship. That it wasn't just a surface thing. This has been going on. Who knows how she felt about him or thought she felt about him, she's a child, but yeah, it was. I know the judge is deciding if there is enough evidence, we'll go through the motions here, but it doesn't matter if they have that chainsaw. It doesn't matter that the evidence it's not one thing. Collectively, there is just too much.
00:10:51
Speaker 2: It is over overwhelming, and when we come back we're going to talk about what the defense did try to do on day two while they were questioning those detectives that were on the stand. And we'll also tell you what people said David, what his expression was like there in the courtroom, and we'll get to Celeste's parents when we come back, and and and welcome back everyone to this episode of Amy and TJ. We are going over day two of David's preliminary hearing. Of course, a judge is listening and taking in all of this evidence being presented by the prosecution, and yes, it is incredibly damning at this point, and so far the defense has not been able to do much to poke holes in anything, and this isn't their job to do that. They're taking in, I'm sure also evaluating the evidence that they're seeing presented in court as well to try and figure out what their defense is going to be, which at this point none of us really know. But they have been focused again for a second day on evidence collection procedures, trying to go after the detectives, and the way they collected evidence didn't seem like it was that strong. They were tenacious by all accounts, and continued on this theme, but not really sure if it's going to bear any fruit at all or what they got from it.
00:12:19
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean maybe they're fishing, maybe they're Yeah, they're just collecting as much info as they can as they get ready for their case. This isn't a situation necessarily they're going to poke any holes enough that the judge is going to say, Aha, that's not look that ship has sailed. This is going to trial, obviously, But there is value in what the defense is figuring out, and Roseensey, they could be figuring out that we don't have a shot in hell. You need to make a deal and make sure he doesn't go on death row. That could be a part of it.
00:12:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, that absolutely could be a part of it. That this may be them taking it all in and saying, yeah, we have nowhere to go. They were focused on why investigation why detectives didn't test the exterior of David's tesla. They question why they hadn't done more DNA testing on some of the items at his home. But they have DNA linking celestrievs to that blood. And I think, frankly, we heard from one of the detectives saying, because we didn't need to because we didn't have to because we didn't think it was necessary, and that was kind of a valid point. Now, David reportedly from folks who are there in the courtroom, they've described his demeanor as unphased and with no visible reaction.
00:13:39
Speaker 1: I wonder if that's just if that's just what you go.
00:13:42
Speaker 2: To as a defendant, if that's just your default, you compartmentalize, you kind of just maybe even leave your body. I can't imagine taking this all in and having celest parents there, members of the media there, and knowing that this is a worldwide spectacle. How does one what should one's facial expressions look like in a moment like that?
00:14:05
Speaker 3: Say it again, he seems to be on brand because it seems to be a little bit of his persona. I don't necessarily see a whole bunch of images of him in performances where he's smiling. He has kind of a dark, mysterious nature to him, so and to his music, keep it to a certain degree. So to hear he's sitting there in the that same stoicism, I guess, yeah, once again, this dude's staying on brand.
00:14:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a very good way to put it. And then Celess parents Celest parents. A lot of folks were curious because they left the courtroom on Wednesday when the judge had a break, and then they did not come back at all after the break, and so a lot of people were concerned. Look it so much was made that they sat through everything on Tuesday, the most difficult images you could imagine of your own child there displayed in front of the courtroom.
00:14:57
Speaker 1: They sat through it all.
00:14:58
Speaker 2: So why then did they get up and leave and not return on Wednesday? While the family lawyer did give a statement and said that they're trying to conserve their strength for today, they know today, Thursday is going to be an incredibly emotionally difficult day. Some are even suggesting that today is going to be more difficult than Tuesday. Yes, we saw images, and there may be more images today, but we're going to hear, as you pointed out at the top of this episode, from the medical examiner, and he is going to be describing the condition of Celest's body, describing how they determined her cause of death. And to hear someone verbalize the worst thing you could think of happening to your daughter has got to be difficult, And yeah.
00:15:46
Speaker 3: That's the job of the man. I mean, I can't imagine they're going to go through the step by step, point by point. How do you know how she died? How did she die in that determination? What was the state of the body, What does this mean? How long was she that all those details? This is the medical examiner, So I didn't see the schedule how they wrapped up if they're the medical examiner is going to be up first thing this morning or not, but you can imagine this person's going to be up there for a significant amount.
00:16:11
Speaker 2: Of time, yes, for quite some time, and this is going to take its toll, obviously on her parents. So that is why their attorney said, yeah, they needed a break. I'm surprised that they've sat through as much as they have, but they do plan to be back in court again today when it begins. This all takes place around noon Eastern time, nine LA time. We will continue to follow all of the information that comes out of that courtroom. And again, I like that you did this yesterday, but I do think it's important to thank all of those reporters who are sitting through this difficult testimony and reporting back to all of us, because cameras are not in the courtroom, and so this is our window into what's happening there in that La courtroom. So our thanks to them as always, and our thanks to you all for listening to us.
00:16:56
Speaker 1: I mean, the Robock alongside TJ. Holmes. We'll talk to you soon.
00:17:01
Speaker 3: The kitchen pas, the kat
