Another Shocking Familicide: Minneapolis Daycare Family Massacre
It’s hard to believe that for two days in a row we have reports of a husband and father killing his entire family. This horrific tragedy took place on an idyllic tree lined street in a Minneapolis suburb Wednesday morning. A mother dropping off her child at her neighborhood, family run daycare called police after witnessing the father and co-owner of the daycare killing his wife and 7-year-old daughter and then heading upstairs and shooting himself. Hours later, police found a 78-year-old woman, who they believe is the man’s mother, stabbed to death in her home a short distance away. We go over the latest string of similar tragedies all taking place over the past several months.

Speaker 1: Hey there, folks, it is Thursday, August thirteenth, and it's happened again. What is going on with dads wiping out their families with that? Welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. Roach. We did full episodes on this yesterday because of another incident, and here we are again talking about a guy who killed his wife and his seven year old.
00:00:25
Speaker 2: This was absolutely hard to get my head around. I woke up this morning and as soon as I came into our office, you said to me, it happened again. You're never gonna believe it m And we did. We spent much of the day yesterday talking about another situation like this, and then referencing back what this summer and frankly, what this year has been like. It's been like none other that I can recall in recent history. But yes, we're getting word that now in Hopkins, Minnesota, fitting the bill of the heartland of America. These states where family and faith and values and so much of what makes I guess America America is present in a way that maybe you don't necessarily see on the coast. But these are folks who are neighbors in a suburb. It's a tree lined street there a Minneapolis suburb, and lo and behold, a forty one year old man kills his wife, their young daughter in the middle of the home daycare that this couple owned together. And this all occurred in the presence of six young children.
00:01:38
Speaker 1: I don't know how these stories we've averaging one or more a month here in the recent months. Robes, we should these cases should be won every few years. Maybe, I mean, it just seems they like they should be that rare. But I didn't say it off the top, But you have to get your hand around A man killed his wife and seven year old daughter in a daycare where there were six other kids. What the actual hell is going on? What is happening that this took place? Robes, we just talked about the other incident, and I'm from I mean, Robes, this was yesterday. This was yesterday. We're talking about a guy who had killed his kids in Kansas. Yes, shy, what were they? Three, five, seven, and nine?
00:02:23
Speaker 3: Correct? And his wife?
00:02:25
Speaker 1: This was yesterday, folks, we're reporting that the very next day this is happening. I just I don't know what's happening. We got into a familicide. We got into it, Yes, I don't know where it is in the feed robes to tell people to go back and check out. But we talked about this very thing, this phenomenon, I guess it is now it seems a familicide, the idea of a parent killing an entire.
00:02:49
Speaker 2: Family, and chillingly, you actually mused aloud at one point whether or not this could become like what we experienced with school shootings, where it was just maybe one even fueling another or giving someone an idea and creating a catalyst almost for more people to do the same. At a certain point, we have to ask that question, is this happening now with this set of tragedies.
00:03:16
Speaker 1: I don't know, but a man stabbed his seven year old daughter stabbed was going on daughter's seven seven.
00:03:26
Speaker 2: You know what? And that's like I remember, I remember so well. What seven years old is first second grade? That sweet innocence, but that cute personality. It's just a magical age. And I just don't understand how anyone could possibly do something like that. And the six other children who were present at that daycare were described by police as quote very very young children. And by the way, we have not mentioned yet that a few hours later and we'll get into the TikTok that we know so far. They find that he killed a seventy eight year old relative prior to killing his wife, his seven year old daughter, and then himself, So he truly did wipe out an entire family. And this all came to light because yes, a parent. Can you imagine you're dropping your child off at daycare at nine am on an August morning and you witness this attack.
00:04:31
Speaker 3: So this parent calls police.
00:04:33
Speaker 2: Police rushed to the scene and they find and you know, I always I thought this was interesting. Police say he stabbed his forty one year old wife to death, he stabbed his seven year old daughter to death in the basement of the home, and then he makes his way upstairs to the top floor of the residence and shoots himself, so.
00:04:55
Speaker 3: He gets a quick death. They get quite the violent one and set him off. That's horrific.
00:05:02
Speaker 1: And this is all alleged, but this is what police are saying, that he is the perpetrator. But what potentially robes and this is something we talked about, this idea familicide and what often happens there's some triggering event, not a fight or something that's not what we mean, somebody lost a job, there's a bankruptcy, there's a major shift in the norm in that man's world and their consistent robes. As we looked back at all these there was some triggering event. And so I'm really curious to know why if he killed his mother and then went to the daycare or was she how did that?
00:05:37
Speaker 2: So they haven't laid it out exactly, but this is what they believe because they say, yes, officially, there is no clear motive. However, they did release that the man had been living with this quote close family relative. I think a lot of us, a lot of folks are speculating that was his mother, a seventy eight year old woman who he stabbed as well. But that hall didn't come in until three hours later. So they believe that this man who was living with his mom, woke up, stabbed her, left her for dead, and then drove to the family daycare. And so then, yes, the question is it seems as though husband and wife were living separately. Where they separated, It seems like that was the case.
00:06:24
Speaker 1: Daycare was being run out of a home, out of their home, so that would mean was he going he wasn't living in to work or was he just going home for a personal matter.
00:06:34
Speaker 2: Right, So it does appear that and that speaks to the premeditation of this, that this wasn't some explosive argument that got out of control where he unleashed a violent anger with a knife in hand. No, because if he wakes up living with his mom, stabs her to death, then drives to the home he once lived in with his wife and daughter, where they are currently still operating a daycare they want ran together. This was all something he thought out and he chose to do step by step by step, and that is disturbing. Also in line with how we were describing familicide yesterday, police reported no history of any police calls to either address, So no reports of violence domestic disturbance at the home he shared with his wife, which is where the daycare was run out of, or at the home he was living in with his we believe his mother. So again no signs that this was imminent or that this could possibly have happened.
00:07:38
Speaker 1: As often the case as we when these come up individually, we go, how could this happen? Why did this happen? Seem like a nice guy and all these things, and we just can't individually you figure out trying to figure out why once you stack these things up next to each other. Oh, there are so many similarities. And that is a tail tell one right there. A lot of these guys operate perfectly, normally, college educated, genuinely viewed as family oriented.
00:08:04
Speaker 2: Yes, and so to that point, family oriented. Mom and dad were running a It was called brown Bear Childcare. It was a daycare center. It was operated out of a two story home. They describe it as a tree lined street. They had a mural, a beautiful mural on the garage of a tree lined lake.
00:08:23
Speaker 3: With a moose. People.
00:08:26
Speaker 2: If you go onto the daycares facebook page, you see kids playing toys inside in the backyard with color for decorations, artwork on the walls. It was licensed by the state going back seven years, so it's been in operation successfully without any they've been in compliance, no complaints twenty nineteen, capacity of ten kids. So yeah, family oriented. He was running a child daycare center out of his home for the past seven years with his wife without any complaints. So yes, they were a family centric family where they were taking care of other people's kids. That's how much family meant to them. It was literally the family, business.
00:09:06
Speaker 1: Pillows of the community, active in the community, caring for other people's kids. Well, that's just that goes in line with so many of these types of cases.
00:09:15
Speaker 2: It is absolutely heartbreaking. And yes, because we just have been covering this, it unfortunately checks all the boxes. And because it does, there are warning signs now. I feel like, unfortunately, with enough of these, just like what happened with school shooters, you start to get preventative plans in place. You start to tell people if you see something, say something, if you recognize a pattern, if you see someone changing, don't assume that it's all just going to go away or be okay, because this is happening. When we come back, we're going to tell you about the reaction from the community, and we'll tell you about Yes, we'll just tick them off because maybe you didn't hear our last episode. But this has been a hell of a year and a hell of a summer. Welcome back everyone to Amy and TJ. We are talking about the latest in a string of horrific family massacres. I really don't think there's another way to put it. And look, we're hearing.
00:10:21
Speaker 1: I didn't measure this. They call it like a technical term family annihilation. Wow, that goes along with familiar size family annihilation and Jesus.
00:10:31
Speaker 2: That is exactly what appears to have happened in Minneapolis, where a man killed his seven year old he stabbed his seven year old daughter, his forty one year old wife, and we believe it was his seventy eight year old mother, but certainly a close family relative who he was living with, and then shot himself. And the mayor of this community, by the way, this is it's called again Hopkins, Minnesota, population nineteen thousand. He said this, there are no strangers in this community, so we are all reeling from this tragic incident.
00:11:03
Speaker 3: And the officers who reported to the scene.
00:11:05
Speaker 2: The police chief said his guys are shaken, that this is something they have not encountered before and something they will never forget. His actual quote was, this is a horrific, tragic situation for any community, but certainly for the guys and the women who responded.
00:11:22
Speaker 3: Nobody's prepared to see what they saw.
00:11:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think about these I think about several scenes ropes that we've been talking about. In these cases, guys killing seven kids, six kids, five kids, four kids, in many cases their own kids. These guys have walked into these scenes. The guy in Michigan, in particular, robes that scene. They described firefighters showed up. They're not supposed to be prepared for that. No, they don't train for that kind of thing. They're in there fighting the fire. And you find eight bodies. Yeah, and six of them are kids between the ages of five and fifteen. That was what's in Michigan. So we talk about these scenes. Yes, and they had a dead kid robes and also six other kids in there to care for. Like that's just how many. Probably every single cop was a father.
00:12:09
Speaker 2: I know there were reports because again this is in a suburb like this wasn't in a business strip mall area. This was on a tree line street where they have neighbors and families living among and around them, and neighbors who lived across the street described seeing those first responders coming out of this home carrying these small kids who were scared to death about what they had witnessed. These young kids witnessed this massacre. That is just horrific, and that's a lifelong situation of absolute trauma.
00:12:43
Speaker 1: So I wonder that detail. I wonder how many saw how much.
00:12:47
Speaker 3: And they're I do wonder trying to figure that out.
00:12:50
Speaker 2: Now, the police chief even acknowledged, we don't know how many kids saw, and they don't know how much of what it like, They don't know how much of the tragedy they saw, but they believe they did witness quite a bit of it. And certainly, can you imagine the screaming, the sounds, I mean, even if you didn't see it, you heard it.
00:13:08
Speaker 1: Even the I mean, hell, it was clearly in plain side because the parent, the.
00:13:12
Speaker 2: Parent who was dropping off their child saw saw the attack.
00:13:17
Speaker 3: That was how it was described.
00:13:18
Speaker 2: And look again, just to remind you all the Kansas incident on Tuesday where officers found six people dead and yes, a man who called nine one one said he killed his family and was going to kill himself, and yes, all six people were dead when authorities arrived. Those kids were from three years old to nine years old. You mentioned the Michigan massacre that was in July, so just last month of this year, eight dead killed his wife and six kids at the house on fire. Then in June in Iowa, Ryan McFarlane killed six family members, three of them his own children. And then in April you had Shamar Elkins in Louisiana, shooting and killing eight kids, seven of them his own.
00:13:59
Speaker 3: Like this is on.
00:14:00
Speaker 2: April, May, June, July, August, that is to in August.
00:14:07
Speaker 3: That is.
00:14:09
Speaker 1: Unacceptable something Againes, I guess it's possible this is a bizarre cluster. It's bizarre. But if it's not, this is something now ropes who have to keep an eye on, and there are signs, there are things to look for. This is almost they say exclusive exclusively men who do this, but it's overwhelmingly white men who do this. These are oftentimes guys who have controlling nature, who very have extreme difficulty with humiliation, with failure, with shame, and so when something happens a triggering event, a bankruptcy, loss of.
00:14:44
Speaker 3: A job, loss of a marriage, infidelity.
00:14:48
Speaker 1: I mean some of these robes there was a court hearing planned and that contributes robes. They have things that all these things have in common. You would never think that's somebody in your life is capable of that. But that's the point. Es.
00:15:03
Speaker 2: Yes, killing your own mother, killing your own seven year old daughter, and and your wife and doing it with a knife. Because we've even talked a lot of these cases, almost all of them involved a gun quick. You got the surprise element because usually oftentimes these families are sleeping and that's when these crimes are permitted. This was in the morning, with witnesses and a knife. I mean, this was as violent and as brutal as it gets.
00:15:30
Speaker 1: We are still waiting as of this recording, the police have not identified have officially identified the suspect or the victim, so we're waiting for that update and we do certainly expect to hear more about what they know about what happened in that house slash daycare. I want to update you here. This is one and this is the type of story, Rodes. I mean, my god, we wouldn't hope we would have another one of these even this year to be talking about, but this is something worth keeping an eye on. So we appreciate you, as always spending a little time with us on t J on the half of my dear Amy Robot. We will talk to the awsoon
