RSS Feed Top DOJ officials just wrapped a news conference following the arraignment of alleged shooter, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen. Allen is charged with the attempted assassination of President Trump in addition to firearms charges, including discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. More charges are coming his way, but acting Attorney General Todd Blanche couldn’t say whose bullet hit the secret service agent wearing his bulletproof vest, or exactly how Allen was brought to the ground before being arrested.

The suspect has made a court appearance, and we just listened to a press conference by the top Justice Department officials with that, Welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. I guess what jumped out in me immediately Robes was that they are making clear mincing no words and wondering this was a bona fide assassination attempt.

Speaker 2: They made it very clear that Cole Thomas Allen was targeting the President of the United States first and then had the intent to kill, to take out members of his cabinet from top to bottom in terms of rank.

Speaker 1: So, Cole Thomas Allen, the suspect, thirty one year old part time teacher from California, has been charged now facing three charges. They did make clear there will be more. But charge one attempted assassination of the president, Charge two interstate transportation of a firearm, and charge three discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. And let's go with that one first of all. Robes number three discharge of a firearm. But what you don't see in there is assault on an officer. We do know one officer was hit in the vest. Going to be fine, But Robes, these were questions we had about do they know if the suspect actually shot that officer?

Speaker 2: And I think the answer to that is they don't know. Oh no, yeah, And if they do know, they're not telling us. But the point being is when they were reasked during Q and A whether or not the suspect did Cole Thomas Allen actually fire his weapon? The attorney, the acting Attorney General, Todd Blanche pointed to the charge and said, yeah, he's being charged with discharging his firearm during a crime of violence. So the answer is yes. But then it got really fuzzy after that because he said it isn't clear. They don't really have that, they don't have the shell casing. It sounds like based on the weapon he was using and if he didn't, what like, basically.

But there was a big point not necessarily of contention, but trying to get clarity at least from members of the press corps about exactly what happened. So they saying additional charges could come. They will determine later. The other part of this is that, yes, if they're saying the suspect fire and I should mention this, they said the suspect fired. They are having a tough time. They don't know everything here, but they couldn't confirm necessarily when the suspect fired that was a bizarre thing. They were explaining robes and saying, yes, we've seen the video of him running through that magnetometer. They said he was holding the gun at that time when he ran through, but robes they were also saying that he this gun was heard discharging as he was approaching the checkpoint. Some of that didn't make sense.

Speaker 2: Perhaps how many shots were fired in total, and if just the one agent fired five shots, if multiple agents fired their weapons, and there really weren't a lot of answers, and the Attorney General basically said they're going to have to go through the ballistics and that wasn't something that he had all the information on to determine exactly who fired and where those bullets ended up. But clearly, if they believed that Cole Thomas Allen when he discharged his weapon actually hit that other Secret Service agent that ended up having to go to the hospital who was wearing the bullet pofvests, he would obviously be charged with attempted murder.

But that is certainly of note. Robes if a guy went in there to attempt to kill the president of the United States and he was taken down, she actually mentioned he only.

Just how many specifically has been a little unclear. But to think that trained Secret Service agents were able to get off five shots and none of them hit him, I thought that was interesting.

Speaker 1: And who was firing and there it's possible that the one officer was hit as the one who fired all five shots he's suggesting. So here are some of the new details we'll go through, including the timeline and some things that happened that night that we found interesting. They did rose and I appreciated the Attorney General. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche did come out on the first thing. He did was defend law enforcement. Like nobody was injured. People want to call this a failure. No it's not. It worked the way it was supposed to because nobody got injured.

The suspect did not get inside that ballroom, and according to Attorney Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, he didn't even get close.

There's a concourse level, there's a terrorist level, and there's a level where you actually have the ballrooms, though usually an escalator.

Speaker 2: It's been in the same place, and they have obviously created a security system that has shielded and prevented any sort of attack like this, because every sitting president, honestly other than President Trump, attends this dinner every year while they're in office. So yes, you know there's going to be a ton of security. But now I am remembering there are layers like you can see people who were up on the mezzanine. You might even wave in people coming up and down the escalators. It's all coming back to me that there are multiple floors, so to hear he wasn't even on the same floor as the ballrooms.

Am I saying right? Three first names, right, cold, Tom Old Thomas Allen? Yes, my goodness, all right, so Cole Thomas Allen about his travel. Now, he had made reservations at the hotel from April twenty fourth to twenty six Robes, But he made it several weeks prior, yes.

Speaker 2: So this was a big deal, and it made headlines that the suspect Allan made his reservations for the hotel that holds the event each and every year on that same day, April sixth, right around the time where it was announced that he knew the once he knew the President was going to be there, they made clear that is when he made the reservation, and that.

Speaker 1: Was a part of the issue here, Right, how many times how many hotels have all of us checked in before and nobody looked through my bag to make sure I didn't have a weapon. So that was a part of his plan. That is why he traveled by train starting April twenty first from LA to Chicago and then from Chicago to DC on the twenty third ropes. They even broke down when he checked into the hotel at one o'clock, so he was there with his stuff, had not been screened in any way, shape or form, because he was a guest of the hotel.

I believe they had pictures of all of his weapons on full display in front of reporters with our press conference. But that is how he was able to travel from Los Angeles all the way to DC with multiple firearms.

I know it was chaotic, but they are taking a lot of credit for how much information they're putting out. This stuff is important. The details will come out, but that's that's key. Robes about the security. First of all, Yes he ran through, he got stopped, or he tripped and fell.

And I did feel like Todd Blanche was trying to be very specific and to not say anything that was incorrect.

The Justice Department said they are investigating some links to some what left wing extremist groups, So we're going to learn a lot more, and as always usually rove the case, it's while a sign was missed and this just didn't just happen over now.

But it wasn't until they got this so called manifesto from him that apparently he timed and set to be sent basically at the time he was expecting to be wreaking havoc at the White House Correspondence Centner. So he timed it out so that his family and friends, whoever he sent these emails to with this so called manifesto, would be reading it once it was too late to stop it. That was his intent to let them know, but to let them know without any ability to stop him from.

Just wrapping up a press conference a short time ago from top Justice Department officials, Robes, this is not confusing. But this guy is not going to be uh getting out of prison anytime soon. What I mean by that he has been granted bail.

Speaker 1: I think that's fair. They're learning a lot about this guy Robes, of course, but more and more reports are starting to come out. This manifesto, this thing he sent his family. They got concerned enough that they apparently were reaching out to law enforcement about it. They were concerned enough, and we were seeing, as it often is the case, they're looking at all of his online activity. The Justice Department said they are investigating some links to some what left wing extremist groups, So we're going to learn a lot more, and as always usually rove the case, it's while a sign was missed and this just didn't just happen over now.

Speaker 2: Yes, of course this was escalating, and his family was aware that he was becoming more and more politicized and becoming more and more outspoken. But it wasn't until they got this so called manifesto from him that apparently he timed and set to be sent basically at the time he was expecting to be wreaking havoc at the White House Correspondence Centner. So he timed it out so that his family and friends, whoever he sent these emails to with this so called manifesto, would be reading it once it was too late to stop it. That was his intent to let them know, but to let them know without any ability to stop him from.
