Get a load of this cringy AI voice. Enjoy this week's episode. We'll be back on schedule going forward. We knew you were worried, love Don and Gary Hi, Gary Hi Hi.
43 Ooh you said visual props like at all our loopy. It's not even catheine, it's running me. How are you? I'm good? How are you? I'm good? You're looking quite spelled and fabulous today. Well it's Wednesday and I showered, so you know, all those things help. We all thank you for that. So how are you good? It's been you know, my Wednesdays, my day off. It has been busy. I've been on the ghost since this morning. How to go? I get some blood drawn for later in the month, I go see my doctor and just running a bunch of errands and yeah, and I just got back about about an hour ago. So it's a side note because I went to my doctor on Monday too for a physical or a checkup, And are.
25 You getting blood work for your physical or it's just for the follow up with your nutritionus in. Your the blood work is for my annual with my primary care doctor. Got you because I last saw him March of last year. So I'm like, you know what, let's just check in and. We're on the same We're on the same cycle for that. So you know, it's funny too, because I mean, I love and I hate going to the doctor because the blood work that you do is always something you know, I guess what your cholesterol is here, and your LDL here and your HDL is there, And I never understand anything on those reports, right, And you can read them in your portals when you. Write, yeah, well, I guess you should talk. I guess we should talk to the doctor too. Right, ask questions.
06 So anyway, so what's going on? Sorry? So today, you know, we've had you know, some stressful several weeks to start out the year, and we talked in one episode about what's been going on nationwide, but I thought we'd lighten it up. So I found some information on senior discounts, because you know, we are doing sixty so we should know what's out there. Plus, I found a really fun article on a group of ladies in Massachusetts who are all over sixty and they're doing some kind of fun. So I'm going to expand on that, okay, and catch up on a couple other things that we've talked about in the past. White, I'm going to bring up tetanus.
53 You are full of it today. You've got to. I'm full of something, Honey, I don't know what it is. You're full of nuggets, that's what you are. So I have a question. Do you think I should grow a beard or should I grow and wear it to pay? What do you think? Well, visually, that's not an attractive beard. Okay, Well the reason why, well, that's. Not your first beard you've had in the. We're changing the AstroTurf. Did you know that AstroTurf is going away eventually? Or turf fake lawns are going away soon because they produce too many microplastics. In the environment. Okay, yes, So in California, I believe that we're going to stop using them, or allowing to use them in the next couple of years actually.
37 And are they substituting it with something else that's not real grass. That's a good question because at first it was droughts that was causing us to go away from grass and going to like dry scapes and things like this. And I don't know why I'm on this dietrite, but these props are too good to not pull up and try. Well, you know, I don't know there's an alternative other than dry scapes, which is also the shape of my skin. Right now, so let's talk about the elefante in la Abati, shall we? Well, but don't we want to take a quick break and then come back. You know, Well, okay, but I wanted to talk about my hair. Oh okay, Well no, then we should stop everything right now. Everyone stop what you do, listen or watch. Well, I just wanted to tell you I just got off my rowing machine on my Avron. No plug intended, but an if you'd like to sponsor us, we're here for I think I'm small. I'm having a small affair with one of my virtual instructors. They don't know it yet, so.
32 You think, and they don't know, so it sounds like a real fair to me. I guess we'll take a break then, huh, let's do that. Okay. Hi, welcome to Donn and Gary Doing Sixty. My name is Aaron Brokovic.
14 We're here to on wrap and unpack navigating the world at this age. Oh why the pause? I don't know, so real quick Before I talked about, like, you know, having an affair with my rowing instructor, but basically I just got off my avaron, which is not a euphemism for something else. So I'd like to clear that up with the audience. Okay, okay, good to know. Okay, So quickly, you can find us on Apple podcast and Spotify and wherever amazing podcasts are found. We're on Instagram at Donn and Gary Doing sixty. We're also on YouTube. I put fight for pod under Donn and Gary Doing sixty. So that's my plug. So you take it away. What's going on. When throwing our email address don and Gary Doing sixty at gmail dot com. Just throw it in.
57 You're here and that's where I'm the executive producer of this show. My check doesn't reflect that, but that's okay, going to bring up before we move on to our main topic. I want to go over a couple of quick things. So this month, which we're recording now, it's the first week of March, the post Office is issuing a new commemorative stamp. Really and I went to the post office today, but they're not out yet. I was hoping to, like we're talking about senior discounts. I was hoping to be able to hold up my Betty White stamps, but they're not out yet. So and then last year or the year before I forget now she died.
38 It was towards the end of the year I want to say twenty twenty three. Yeah, she was ninety nine. She was going to be turning one hundred, like in January, mid January something like that, and she passed away before hitting one hundred. Yeah. Well, I'm sure you get your stamps later. Well I will, okay. And then in a previous podcast, we are talking about, you know, staying current on our health, you know, checking with your doctor or so on. And I had brought up to you the question of what is the tetanus shot for? And you said for tetanus, which is. So helpful that the topic was so good on that.
20 So I decided to look it up. And it says if I can read this, it's a very small print. The tetanus vaccine is part of the recommended series of childhood and adult immunizations. It protects against the bacterial infectious tetanus, also known as lockjaw. Tetanus causes jaw cramping and painful muscle spasms. There's no cure, and ten to twenty percent of people who have it die. So it is you know people still get that well, they say, as adults. So that is one of the questions I have for my doctor, my primary okay doctor, when I see him later this month, is I think this should take it every ten years. I don't recall ever taking it. So I'm sure he'll say yes, but I'll just wait to talk to him in a couple of weeks. So that's tetanus.
10 But in the meantime, there was talk about a pneumonia vaccine out about so I contacted my primary care doctor and one of his associates replied and said, there's because I would recommend the RSV vaccine at your convenience. This is not a pneumonia vaccine and is intended against the respiratory sintillal virus, which is RSV. So I got that one last week, and then he said the pneumonia vaccine is separate, and I would recommend updating this when you turn sixty five.
52 Okay, got it. So on my list of where I keep all my medical stuff, you know, put on there that seems to do so in three years from now, you know, twenty twenty seven or twenty eight, whatever it is, I should schedule my pneumonia vaccine. Well, let me ask you a quick question. Yes, do you do you powerload your vaccines? Because I had the same question asked to me, but they were asking pneumonia, flu, and COVID all at the same time. So you can actually get all three of those at the same time if you'd like. There's been a couple of times when there's been when it's flu season, you know, in the fall, late fall, and there's another covid either vaccination or what do they call like the supplement or you know whatever the other ones are booster thank you. So there have been times where I've gotten both of them on the same day.
43 Okay. So now some build you the same day, some do to day apart because different people react differently. I'm sure you've talked to some people that when they get the one of them, the flu shot of the booster, that like they're in a lot of pain for several days and it's like, you know, little pain but like RSV, very minor and it didn't last very long. So if I took care of that, so next up could be the tetanists, if I get it after I speak to a doctor. But yeah, I'm just trying to keep up on all that. No, I hear you, and you're such a conscientious individual putting that in your calendar to remember, because I barely remembered I needed a flu shot and a pneumonia shot and probably now I'm going to ask those So I think we should bill ourselves with a public service announcement for health care?
27 Why not? You know, it's if you if you haven't been doing it, it's never too late to start. I went many years without seeing my doctor or my dentist or anything. I just it's just like, you know, it's like I think it's a guy thing. If it's not brogue, why fix it, right? But at some point I said, no, you need to get So I am on a schedule, and that's why I write everything out and I know, okay, so if my apployments in February, then I need to you know, February next year, or for six months later whatever I put her on out there. So I've got a visual to help me keep on top of all that. I guess you know the other thing real quickly, I'd like to ask you too, because you know I'm the same way with you. I see the doctor once a year, and I mean, luckily there's no need for it, but I mean if you were, I think you would be smart enough to say if something were not right, you would give.
17 The doctor a call. Well, yeah, for sure, you know, because guys like to tough it out. It's like, oh that doesn't hurt, or like it hurts just a minute, I'll just I'll just walk it off. And like that. I don't think at our age we can afford to walk things off anymore, right, you know what I mean? Yeah? No, I mean, yeah, you shouldn't wait till the next year or the next visit to do it. If a summing comes up, that's what they're there for. So yeah, okay, so off camera, off video, I told you that I have a test for you. It's not pease for you. But I have to be very clear when I say that, because if I say, if I say I'm too close as testes, I don't have testes for you. I have a test and a tea for you.
00 Okay. So anthing to do with tetanus. No, okay, Oh that's good though, right The test is test for tetanus. Okay. So the test where you need to have a piece of paper and a pen on which I'm sure you have. Yes, Okay, this I found Facebook. Wait wait, wait, okay, okay, okay. In a minute, I'm going to have you write some letters down. But here's the opening of this. Apparently there's a weird code that if you grew up in the seventies, eighties, and nineties you can automatically understand. And I'm going to have you write all these letters and in uppercase G y A I, T M F h R h N B I okay, b y A.
57 Okay. So it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what it's an acronym. It means something and it says again, Apparently there's a weird code that if you grew up in the seventies, eighties, and nineties. You automatically understand what that means. This, that's the teas Okay, and I'll give you like ten seconds. I'm going to tell you because we've got to move on. Okay, So I'm supposed to know what this is. Yeah, it's an acronym for something. I'll give you a hints, something your parents might call out to you. Okay, I'll tell you because we went to move on. It stands for get your ass in the motherfucking house right now before I beat your ass.
47 Yeah, our parents would have said that to us. Well, my mother would have said in Spanish. But you know, oh my god, I think we. Put this on Facebook and I'm looking at it, going what does that mean? And it was like, oh, I got it, Oh, I got it. Oh my dad never said that. Other people got it, some people did. It took me, you know, like two minutes and I figured it out. But see, my parents never said that to me. So anyway, Yeah. So that was the test. The tea is very quick and silly. Just because I love hot dogs. I don't even very often, but you get a craving for a hot dog, you know. Oh. There are two restaurants, one in San Francisco and one is San Mateo, and I think they might be changed.
33 I'm not sure both of them, but you would think from the name of the restaurant that they would serve hot dogs, among other things. One of them is called Lazy Dog. Have you heard of that one? Yeah? I think so, But go ahead, do you go first? Yeah, Lazy Dog. It's like a you know, just a bistro that you've got breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Yeah, they serve everything, but they don't serve hot dogs. But they're called lazy Dog. They don't serve. No, They've got like a dog as a mascot and like pictures of dogs. But I'm like, but why do we have a hot dog? And the other one is Underdogs Cantina, which is actually a Mexican it's a bar and then there serve Mexican food. Okay, so you know that bar food, you know. But again I was Underdogs Cantina.
23 I'm very excited, you know, and no hot dogs. But you know what, that's actually a good point because I don't know of a lot of restaurants that serve hot dogs. Dirwener Schnitzl. That's taking us back to the seventies too. Actually is here in Redondo Beach down the street, but it's kind of sketchy and I'm not sure. Well anyway, okay, so the title of this episode, we're going to move on to the main topic, if that's okay with you. Title the main topic is I got your senior discount right here, and I'll give you the derivation of where that right here came from. We only have to go back about forty years. I was on my very first trip ever to Europe with a bunch of other people I didn't know was a tour group.
14 And you're spending two months with these people on this tour. So you get to befriend them and hang out and laugh and share stories. And there's one there's Wanda from Georgia and Jody from Alabama, who I still keep in touch with. Were friends on Facebook, and one has come out to visit and so on. Anyway, so I attribute this to them, So we use that right here with about anything. I'm wearing long pants, so I can't do what we normally do. But you're going to hear a sound and is supposed to simulate slapping your inner thigh, inner thigh, your inner thighs, because what you'd say is, I got your senior discount right here, and these these ladies in the South and be slapping the inside of their thigh when they say this. And that has stayed with me for forty years. So you can use that.
15 You can use that that right here anything you want. You know, Hey, where's where's my cockgait? I got your cocktail right here. So that's where that title came from. No senior discounts. Only because we've had, you know, a couple tough weeks, I thought we need to lighten it up a little, yes, and uh, being that we are sixty, there are lots of opportunities for people of a certain age to take advantage of things, and they don't always advertise them. True, right, I know, there's ARP which through them.
56 If you're a member, you're entitled all kinds of discounts. You get a free duff when you sign up. And they come after you. I think at age fifty, if I'm not mistake knocking early, they never came after me. So it's a little you know, perturbed that they know I'm not going to be ignored Dawn, but they just you know, gard me. But anyway, So I just found all kinds of fun things and some might be obvious. Oh, I'm so go ahead. Let me ask you a question. That's okay. How do you feel about using or asking or making calling attention to the fact that you would like a senior discount? Oh I have no Hey, if it's going to save me some money, I have absolutely no problem. Okay. No. When I was you know, maybe like early fifties, and they said, oh, you know, it's fifty five and older, I'm like, damn. But once I became fifty five, I'm like, I'm first in line.
46 Then you pushed through unfortunately qualified for a lot of things. Now, yeah, fifty five plus living communities if we wanted. Although I will tell you that I did look into that, just you know, as we're all looking at options as we get older and like look towards retirement and can I live where I currently live or should I move or should I sell? I mean, you look at all these options. And I don't know about southern California, but in northern California there are fewer opportunities for like senior living senior communities, but the few that are here are really expensive. Oh, everywhere, everywhere. And it's like, how do you I mean, at that point where we're on a fixed income, so how how do you make that happen?
31 Okay, it's it's definitely a choice and definitely something we could dive into. I didn't mean to take you in that direction. But yeah, no, no, but that's I mean, that's part of you know. No discount there, right, none at all because it's very expensive to do. So anyway, sorry I took you off that run. No, I mean, you know, and this is kind of silly light whatever, but it's just kind of putting it out there. So in terms of entertainment, there's like AMC Theaters, Regal Sin they offer thirty discount for seniors who are sixty plus. Kindle ebooks, I guess through ARP you get a discount. Well, through ARP obviously get lots of discounts.
12 I didn't find that one. Yeah, said kindle ebooks, ARP members say fifty percent off. So you might need to do if you're a member of ARP is go on the website and get the full list of all the discounts you're eligible for, because I think you know, and they keep I'm sure they keep adding more and tweaking some and whatever. So I would suggest, if you're a member of ourp go on the website and just check. And then it's gonna ask, oh, since I mentioned ARP little trivia, do you know what ARP stands for? Annoying associations reaping personal information? That's very close. American Association of Retired Persons not even close. Okay, okay.
56 Ticketmasters seniors sixty five and older enjoy reduced prices on tickets, discounts a very per ticket. There's some museums US museums again for fifty plus. And then I know in here in San Francisco, a lot of museums will say, hey, the first Wednesday of the month, or you know, they'll advertise that a certain day of the month is going to be free. For everyone, right. Right, So that that's another good, you know, good thing to look for. One nice thing about certain venues here in San Francisco, Like within Golden Gate Park there's the Japanese Tea Garden and the Arboretum. Both charge entrance to get in there, but if you are a San Francisco resident, you just show proof of residency and you get in for free. So you know, look at the parks and other venues that may offer a local discount, you know, or free for locals. You probably just need to show your driver's license or something with your home address on it to show proof. So there's another tip. National Park Service Senior Pass for age six to and older offers access to over two thousand federal recreation sites. Well with the latest news, who knows how many of those one may open, but it says, fun fact, this pass pays for itself after you visited two or three parks, so you can buy senior pass if you are at that point where you want to go visit different National parks, look into that, buy a senior pass and they say,
26 you know, after three, two or three visits to different parks, it pretty much covers the costs. So yeah, we probably should look into that very quickly. Actually, yeah, you want to take exactly that, right, And. Then of course I always look I recently spoke to my insurance company that handles both my homeowner insurance and my auto insurance because sometimes, like in my case, they say for the auto, if you take an online class through them, you're eligible for like a five percent discount on your annual rate. Right, So there's ways to augment what the total policy amount is for the year, and it could be that for driving I think in I think in my home one, we looked at the policy and what my deductible was, so I raised my deductible and then that brought my insurance down by like one hundred and forty dollars for the year. Oh right, So look at your policy. Talk to your insurance company. It's like, hey, I'm sixty two or whatever age you are, to see what options are to bring that down.
38 Does your driving record have anything to do with because I know we're both knock on wood good drivers and haven't had any accidents or anything that could play factor. You know. When I talked to her, she pulled up my profile and said, hey, we show you as averaging fifteen thousand miles per year. I said, well, that is much lower now because as of October of twenty twenty four, I'm working from home, so I'm no longer commuting across the Golden Gay Bridge, you know, several days a week. So she asked me, well, guestimate what your annual mileages now, and I'm gonna guess like five thousand instead of fifteen thousand, and guests like five thousand. Yeah, so that that could help. And then like I said, taking the class, Yeah, so tying into that and about you having to make the effort to call them your phone company, your your mobile company, your cable company, because you may have signed up with them ten years ago and you've got the same plan, right and the rate keeps keeps going up and up and up. But they're always introducing different plans, they're reworking things, they're tweaking them, they're adding promotions. So that's another good opportunity to figure out, you know, where you can you have to do the homework and contact them, press them, because you can say, well then i'll just dump you and go to your competitor, right, no, no, and then I'll try and keep you for whatever. So there are things you can do. You might be a little need to be a little manipulative, but but.
07 You just got to have a little hootspa in those conversations because anytime you call a cable company said, you know what, this is way too much And it's kind of it is like those those bills keep going up if you just don't pay attention to they go up every single every few months. And all of a sudden, what you're paying one hundred and fifty dollars for you're now paying three hundred and fifty dollars. Yeah, it's crazy. And what prompted me initially was when the pandemic hit and I got my pay cut. I'm like, well, I'm looking at all my monthly expenses, like where can I cut back? As like in cable, for example, I don't have the premium channels of HBO show. I had, you know, cable with some you know, a package deal, but it certainly wasn't anything extravagant. And since then I ended up switching to I went from direct TV to YouTube TV yep, and it cut my bill from like I want to say, one hundred and fifty to like seventy, so basically half.
59 Yeah, YouTube is our friend. By the way, if you'd like to watch us on YouTube, you can see PI five for pod Don and Gary doing sixty. No but you no, you're absolutely right, Gary. I mean yeah, It's funny though, because as we get older, you know, like a lot of our people might not. Think to do these things right. You know, it's like you've got to be conscientious like you are, and to delve into this because if we don't, you know, if we just think it's the status quo, we kind of suffer for it, right, And if you don't ask, you're never going to find out. Right exactly. Yeah, So it's kind of like a friend of mine has given me advice that you know, you have to be your own critic. But like, if you're a meeting with your doctor, you should go in there with questions, right, as opposed to, Yeah, some time my annual VISI I'll just come and you tell me what's good and what's not, and I'll just walk away. But it's like you should have questions and like about maybe what medications you're on or what things you could change.
56 I mean, so you have to do the work speaking. Of, because one of the things I did ask my doctors I don't want surprises. So for example, you know, certain diseases are quite prevalent in that as people get older, too, like pancreator cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer. I've heard a lot of people, and I don't mean to go down down a downy Debbie Downer road button. It's also lung cancer for people who never smoked, right, and some people that actually have contracted as lung cancer. It's like you have to ask these questions, like doctor, what are my chances? And the biggest question I had was what tests are available to see if there are markers for any of those things. There's a litany of things.
36 But you're right, you have to back to your point, is you have to ask questions. Yeah, it's again doing the work. And to your point, I think it's a matter of knowing your family history. Yes, right, So if your parents or your grandparents or uncle's aunts someone else had one of those things you mentioned lung cancer, whatever, it's good to bring that up. And as you say, what could I do or what what tests can I take or what exam can I have done to make sure? I don't know if you saw on social media a friend that we know from high school is going through the process of you said, would you say do a marker?
17 Is there any markers that you There are certain tests you can take that will show markers for proclivities towards but like you say, it's mostly towards family history. Right, So this person is looking at the going through process to see if there's any markers for them potentially having Alzheimer's, yes, because of family history. Right. So it's again it's just it's it's being proactive and and taking care of yourself and in all these different aspects with health, financewers, all of that. It's it's not a fun thing to do, but it actually I think you probably feel better as I did, and probably you did after you go through.
57 These things like okay, check check check. These are you know, you don't think about, but if you make a list about them, saying you know what, this is something I need to look into. You have to be your own financial advisor, your own medical practitioner by asking questions. So you have to be a little bit more of a detective with your life. Yeah, yeah, be detective and be proactive and do the work so that if something should happen, it's not a surprise, as you mentioned. And also it's I mean, nobody wants to be a burden on someone else. But if something happens that we're all unexpected, you know, no one knew was coming, it throws a wrench because now you have to maybe rely on a family member to help you with this or whatever, whether it's an illness. I mean, the things like I told you. We talked about how I we're both working on our updating our living trust.
46 I finally the other day sent all my edits to the lawyer to like, here we go, you know, And it was a relief to get that off my to do list. Yes, and isn't it great to just like, Okay, I did it, file it away. Don't have to worry about that. I'm not the least amount of things we need to worry about as we get older, are It's important to have that thing. And that one was on my list for years and I don't know why I dragged my feet. It was like, oh, I'm so busy, and you know, I'll get to it. I'll get to it. And beginning of this year, I pulled out all the paper. I said, you know, what do it now? Took care of that. We mentioned I'm sure you maybe have done the same thing about burial and and.
27 Yeah, definitely different. Your story was different because you had made a decision. You're going to be bunking with your mom, aren't you. Yes, I'm I'm subleasing for mom. So you know she always wanted me to live at home. So guess what, Mommy, Eventually I'm coming back, Let's see what else I think we talked about this. I'm going back to our main topic of discount senior discounts restaurants. You know sometimes it don't you know? Blue Light special senior discount. What's the one that the Denny's or the Ie Hop one of them? Denny's with this they have a moon over My Hammy and a superbird and I think they do have a happy hour for seniors.
08 It's not on my repeat that again. It's the moon over moon over my Hammy, my hamm. It's basically a ham and cheese sandwich, a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. What and the waitress moons you or what is that? Oh, it's a euphemism for a sandwich. You and your French words, right, So restaurants offer senior discounts. The ones I listed including Denny's, I Hop, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's Subway. And you'll notice when you drive by one of those places at certain hours of the day, they are packed with a bunch of us. Yeah, because they're all shuffling in to get. The happy hour whatever it is they have there.
51 Although I will say that the ones listed here are fast foods I tend to not well. I've got a couple of her two and I think you know, some of them we looked at like they were I got my list here, and it's not the most appetizing Applebee's, RB's. Ben and Jerry's, Burger King, Chick fil A. I mean some of these places we would never go to, right Denny's that you said that when AA members get actually twenty percent off and with the regular people just get ten. So okay, just definitely dunkin Donuts. I mean, I hop Wendy's white Castle, like there's not even a white castle here. But can I add. I'm not gonna say all of them sound you know, fabulous, but my what's my what's my doctor? The what's your title?
35 The nutritionist? And the worst huh endocnologists? Yes, thank you. I can hear that my ender chronologists would frown on those, Yes, I and I would do. You know, I don't know about you, but I didn't grow up on fast food. I mean it was a treat here and there and once a while, do you get a craving and I will go to a you know, burger and fries and shake and the whole thing. But it's very rare. But about Lazy Dog, do they have any burgers that you would go to. They've got a good mix of stuff, so I'm sure they have a burger. I will tell you. I had a really fabulous smash burger. I saw you say that. Yes, yeah, it's a place. And I think that's a chain too. I think it's called Smish Smash. I think it's the name of it.
21 Uh. And it's where they open up an Ikea on Market Street, mid Market around by Fifth Street, and right next door is a food hall that's connected to Ikea, and it's called Salu Hall s A l U h a U l. There's two levels and they've got you know, bars and assorted food vendors there. And the one that just opened is Smash Smash. So I went there last week and oh my god, it was messy, but it was. This is kind of a trending food right now. Smash Burgers are smashed burgers because basically they're taking a ball of burger and smashing it. And killing it. Isn't that kind of thing? Well I can do that, yeah, I mean it's still in a burgie. You can do that single patty of double Patty. They're not cheap, but man, they're good. Yeah, I cut you off. I'm sorry, you're gonna no, that's okay.
10 It's okay. We're talking about smash burgers. I'm right a good burger in a while. But I wanted to throw a couple of weird ones out there that I saw. Sure, you can get a discount on installing a walk in tub, just so you know, yea yea yea yes, so you can actually because you know some people have the like stepping over the tub to get into the show. If you have a bathtub, that's interesting. Installing a home alarm system, you can get discounts. Okay, I didn't know about that one. Most of the other ones you had talked about, some of the financial medical assistance programs. Taylor to seniors, there are some things that you can actually. Look for that actually will provide you some discounts when you're looking for assistant programs. If you if you have that need. Good Will offers seniors ten to discount on there, and Cole's offers fifty percent on.
56 Seniors who are sixty and over. Believe it, and I'm not sure these are accurate, but one says Banana Republic, and Rite aid that would be. I had write it on my list at we'll range. Okay, And then you had mentioned Jim's right, some like Balley Fitness Apparents. I didn't mention Jim's. But I'm sure that's an option. Again, it's probably they may not advertise it, but it could nerve to ask. Back to your original point, Yes, you can ask, like, listen, I'm sixty two, or you could say you're sixty two. Yeah, Garry's sixty two. Don's friend Gary is sixty two. I hear people who are sixty two get a discount here. Right, and you here asking for a friend.
36 So yeah, I mean, I think it goes back to just asking. And you know, it's funny I told you that story real quickly that you know, our friend Steve took us to its Sizzler and there's something at Sissler. We can get that because it's like, hey, don we get the senior disc guy said, well, no, you get the senior discount. I'm gonna sit over here and with my dark glasses in a turban and pretend like you didn't say that to me, right, But you do get a discount. A Sizzler. Gosh, I don't know if there's any Sizzlers around here, not to check. Yeah, well, anyway, sorry. Any other discounts that you're aware of, because that I have this. Great story, there's a bunch I would check on the accuracy of some of these lists because I sure maybe and things will be changing in the world, Like you mentioned national parks and right, we don't know the future of those two, but why not why not take advantage of those.
21 And you know, and we talk about one of the discounts was on movie theaters, but sadly they're not as popular as they used to be because a lot of everything you can stream at home at your convenience, you know, watch when you want. I depending on what it is. I kind of enjoy going to the movie because you wanted certain things you want to see on the big screen. Yeah, but don't I mean, I missed the experience of that because I remember when the Sun Dance had their theaters in San Francisco on film More. That was such a fun experience you could get you had a great seat. And then the cinema cinemak I think those I forget, they were like the better ones where you can actually have a glass of wine on your way to the theater. It's like, I want to bring that back. I think they're trying to. There is one the I think Alamo something. It's in the Mission District of San Francisco on Mission Street where it was in the old days it was a movie theater.
10 So they've renovated it and you can be in your seat and order food and they'll bring it to you. And there's a little tables so you can have food and wine and whatever. I've not been there yet. Oh that sounds but they offer I mean the movies they show are the ones that are out there now, the popular one, so it's not like an art house. Nice, but I've yet to go there. Speaking of movies seeing them in theaters. This past Saturday, I did go for my very first time to the Roxy Theater in the Mission District of San Francisco. It's on sixteenth Don't they have a big knee on sign over the top of it. This is yes? Okay? What was that like? It was? It was nice. It's an old theater. But and I passed, walked and driven past it many many times over the years. But this was a Saturday night in the mission out with friends, we went to go see a documentary on Liza Minelli.
05 Okay, how was that? Was that? Amazing? It was good. It's what was called I will tell you in a minute. Liza a truly terrific, absolutely true story. And she is. Seventy eight years old, I believe, so interviewed her several of the people in the business, showed a lot of like co movies and just talked about her career. They they briefly, like in like thirty seconds, covered all her husbands because that's not something she really wants to talk about. I don't think i'd talk about it either. Right, She's had I think four husbands, how many were gay?
50 Three of which were? But anyway, it was it was well done. It was very sweet. And then after which went out to dinner. So that was a fun experience. I'd not been at a movie theater at night on a weekend with you know. It was almost packed, which was nice. And then went across the street to have dinner and then that was packed. So it's nice that people are out because I just don't do that anymore. Yeah, well, I mean I get it's dinner in a show. I mean that sounds like a kind of a fun thing. But honestly, it's like the theaters around here, the ones that I used to like to go to, like the bougie ones, they're never around anymore.
30 So it's not, yeah, the same experience. Or I've gone because, especially coming out of the pandemic, I didn't want to be in a crowded room with a bunch of people. So I would go on a weekday like eleven am, as opposed to Friday night at eight pm, right, And if I went on the off hours, it was like me and two other people in the whole theater, and that's kind of sad. Yeah, but also can we stay awake past eight pm? That's the good question. Yeah, that's true. So yeah, I referenced in the beginning that there was an article I saw. It's from an online platform called nice News, which I love that. So the title is these old ladies dive into Massachusetts ponds come up bearing pounds of garbage. So this is a group of I don't know how many ladies that they all live in Massachusetts. And it says the founder is eighty five years old.
32 Really okay, she's. Been swimming in ponds for the better part of two decades, and they did a story on these people, these ladies, she says, on any given day, you may be able to spot a crew of mostly silver haired women donning wetsuits, diving in and emerging trash in hand. The group is called the Old Ladies against Underwater Garbage, and they're on a mission to preserve the Peninsula's aquatic ecosystems. It's again, this is in Massachusetts, so she says it happened by accident. She and the group's first members began diving for garbage around twenty eighteen, then expanded their efforts. I think they just want to, you know, do their part two, you know, to do with the cold. If it's if you're in a park, everything's above ground or maybe in bushes, right, but it's accessible. When it's underwater, you don't know what's under there, right, And because they like to swim and dive, that's they just said us do that. So they expanded their efforts during the pandemic when the only options for socializing were outdoor gatherings. And when I realized that it wasn't about the garbage, it's it's about that we have discovered a way of repairing the planet, not based on guilt, not based on common sense, not based on fear, but based on joy. Hell, we've got something terrific. So there's thirty members in this group with a weight list that
03 goes on forever. And the group comprises of women ages sixty four and older. And this is what they do. They dive for garbage. They said. Over the years they've removed tires, golf balls, cell phones, countless beverage cans, and even a toilet. So they got it up out of the where. Well, you know, as a group they would I don't know, you know, they would a toilet. They didn't explain how they got the toilet out. Maybe that took some machinery of some type, who knows. Okay, but you never know what you're going to find. Now, I feel like we got to get it together and form our own group. Yeah, but I can't hold my breath that long, so.
44 I'm not going diving to pull up a toilet. Well, think of what it will do to your hair. Well, see what's working out right anyway? Sorry? Yeah, so that's very admirable. Yeah, So that that winds up what I had on discount that old ladies. And you. I mean you tapped into everything that I found out except for the walk in tubs. So I think we're good. Nice. Yes, So again, we have to think about what we're going to do in our sunset years when we want to help the planet and do something admirable. I'm not wearing a wet suit. I'm not going that's going to say, let's go shopping for wetsuits. Okay, Well, on that note, should we close it down?
27 Let's close down because I've got a show to go to. Where are you gonna go see tonight? I'm gonna go see the musical Chicago, really, yes, playing at the Geary Theater? Is it the part of your series? I didn't buy the whole season. I just bought two shows because i'd the other ones. I didn't really you know, anything really jumped at me. Okay, but boys, the other one I saw whatever that one was. And then Chicago. So you think any free socks for this one? No? Because I didn't buy the season. No free socks? Okay? Well, well, I got dogs ready to go outside, and of course, of course it's Wednesday and the garbage man's driving by, so why would it be like any other one? Well, then timing is everything. Let's shut it down. Okay. Thank you for joining us at don and Gary Doing Sixty.
