S2E15 "Ain't Nobody Got Time For That"-Special Guest Phoebe Fazio PART 2
Don and Gary Doin’ 60 Podcast — “Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That” with Special Guest Phoebe Fazio (Part 2!) Buckle up, because Don and Gary are back with Part 2 of our convo with the fabulous Phoebe Fazio — and trust us, ain’t nobody got time for anything less than amazing. This round, we get real about navigating age transitions (aka: why does everything creak now?), finding the guts to perform live on stage without passing out, and the fine art of reinvention… because apparently you can’t just hit “refresh” like on your browser. We also chat about letting go of the tiny stuff (yes, even THAT thing you’re still annoyed about), hunting for balance in a world built on chaos, and of course we wrap it all up with our world-famous “Lightning Round” — the only segment where the questions come fast, the answers come faster, and the hosts try not to hurt themselves laughing. Tune in, laugh hard, and maybe reinvent yourself along the way.

08 Did you InVID me? Am I in the right place? Listen to you a check man? Miss? Did we just send you Jack? Okay? Well then thanks for coming Gary, go ahead. What were you saying when I needed to go back to teaching. I go to those interviews and I usually knew somebody on the panel. Later they called me you'd be great. You know, you had great answers to all the questions. You have incredible experience. They loved you and all the stuff that they're going another way. Well, sound healing is ancient wisdom, and science is you know, has studied it. So it's very fascinating. I love going down this rabbit hole.
52 Who I'll do the intro. Welcome to Don and Gary doing sixty. We're here to unwrap, unpack and navigate the world at. This age. You can find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and wherever amazing podcasts are found. We're on Instagram and Faceback. We're not on faceback, we're on Facebook. Maybe we should be added to face back. And we're also on Blue Sky and of course you can watch us on our YouTube channel at five for pod Don and Gary doing sixty. Can I transition to something else? Yes, please No, Don like no, I have more questions about I do have more.
36 Questions, but Gary's next. Gary gets the next one. No, only because one of the things we talk about, given that the title of this podcast is Don and Gary doing sixty, we have to talk about age. I'm just bummed and it's not called three p's in a pod anymore because I'm a pee. You are, well, maybe we'll do another podcast. We're all in the same class, that's right. Sorry. Making that transition, whether it's turning forty or turning fifty or turning sixty, whatever that number is, for some people, it's like not a thing, you just it's just another number. For other people, a certain age might be a little difficult of a transition to make. So was there any age for you that when you as you turned from you know, the year before into that year, was there any bad feelings, any angst?
33 Any you only want to hear the bad ones, good ones? Well, if there's a really good party one, you know, well. I mean I couldn't look back and go. The threshold into forty was life changing. That was when that turmoil happened, and it changed my career path. The transition into fifty was when I got divorced. I had and I started. I started forming on stage with our local community theater. So I'm like, it was like this new freedom. Yeah, I want to see you in Three Women Women. Yeah, Little Women, Dixie Swim Club. Of course I'd be in Dixie Swim Club.
17 And then. Was the other The one I first started with was a Christmas story. I was the mom you'll suits try out? Oh that one? Yeah, it was fun. It was a lot of fun. The little kids, Okay, Ralphie was incredible, Phoebe. But this is a huge transition to this is a big reinvention too, because I mean, I don't know how you've dealt Was there stage fright? Did you? Did you dive right into it? And why did you put yourself into that position too? Yeah? I had severe stage fright. I mean in high school, I auditioned for one play and I was humiliated and I'm never gonna do it again, you know, right? And I never tried out for solos in choir. No, And you know, I mean I had to stand in front of whole school and sing songs with them. I didn't have any problem with that, even our whole county, like did this whole thing and everybody.
19 You know, I had no problem conducting kids and leading groups and things like that, but but yeah, being on stage auditioning was the scary part. And I did this personal growth thing with a coach and we learned about ourselves, you know, like what's our true nature kind of thing. And what came up was that performing was a thing for me and I did it for attention, and I was like, why that's been shut down? And so it was like an awakening for me that well, in what ways am I performing? So that's when I started to do my voice it's now called sound washing, that voice work that I was talking about. I did it in front of a group of people for the first time and I didn't get humiliated.
14 I like tears came out. And then afterwards everybody shared a little not everybody, some people shared the profound effect it had on them. And so it was like this wow awareness and people kept nudging me. People in my town of Redding were like, oh, performing you should do. You should try out for one of the plays. You shouldn't so, you know, the one community theater group and I don't know how I got the courage, but enough people nudged me, and I and somebody told me when the auditions were, and I. Showed up and I auditioned and I got in.
58 I'm just gonna I'm just gonna audition. I'm not even gonna worry about it. Did you feel like you had to put yourself in a position of an uncomfort or discomfort to get through something or like what was that for? It was sort of a surrender to Okay, okay, if this is my nature, this is really what I'm here to do, to perform, then show me what that looks like, you know. And you know theater isn't my go to for sure. But I've been in four plays now, you know. I've been in operas before. But it wasn't a lead, you know, singing in the chorus you walk it across stage, and I would have the director of opera San Jose would pick me out of the chorus and go, you, I want you to walk across the stage at this one place, you know, I.
46 Would get picked out for things like that. We would sing in the choir. I think we went on tour in Arizona or something, singing at these conferences, you know, and somebody would come up to me afterwards like me out and say, oh, you are such a beautiful singer a whole choir, and so there's something to that I light up or something, you know, and so I it wasn't like I pushed through anything though, I didn't force myself. And when I got there, I was like, I realized. The thing that kept me from auditioning there is that they always ask for an eight by ten picture of.
31 You, and I'm like, who has an eight by ten? But I didn't think of it that way. I'm like, well, I don't have an eight by ten, and I guess I can't audition. Then I ask people that an't really involved in the. There's this thing called a phone that you. Can actually take a picture on. Maybe your children can teach you about that. They just didn't even care about the picture, you know, it just wasn't a thing. It didn't matter, or they should just take that off of the auditions, you know, details or whatever. Here's the thing too, because I means, yes, people are pointing, we're picking you out for things. But also remember if you're in a play, focus is on you when you're speaking, when you're in front, when you have a part in a play, even if it's a part with an ensemble, you're being You're in focus when you have a soliloquy, uh something to.
23 See, monologue, yees, monologue whatever. So how did that feel? I loved it. The hardest part was memorizing my lines. Oh even harder than memorizing my lines because I'm turning fifty. My first play so in my fifties had chemo. Let's just put that in mimics. And so it was about ten years you know, still a little bit of chemo brain. So I had to do a lot of things. I did use technology. I put all my lines on voice memos and I would play them constantly in my in my ears and then and then try to say them, and then I would do the line before and then say my life, you know kind of.
06 But the hardest thing was doing an accent. I had to do a Southern accent for Dixie Swim Club. And then I was in a thriller called death Trap and I played get this. The neighboring Woo woo you know see her. It was right up my house. Was like everyone's like, why are you struggling with this? Just do what you do? Just like go over everything, I'm like, oh, yeah, that's totally a thing. So yeah, but but having those and I was supposed to have an accent with that one too. It was like Dutch, and they're like, I'm like listening to Dutch videos and trying to get.
49 The Dutch thing, Like how do they do it? It's pretty very specific and very obscure. And I tried really hard. It was just overthinking it. They're like, you know what, nobody's gonna know if it's Dutch or whatever. Just make it sound weird, just say certain words funny, you know. It was fine, and uh yeah, and I had I had some really fun moments in all of them. And in Little Women, I. Was the aunt March, like the angry rich ant, you know, float in and you know, bust in and like scary of that in and say something rude and then leave.
30 Very fun. I got to see her in two of those four shows. Yeah, which ones did you go to? You were in Little you saw Little Women, and. I think the other one was The Christmas Story because I've been in that theater twice. Yeah, it was a fun theater. I got such familiar I've been here before, and who else would it have been with you. Yeah, it was one of those. It was like it was in a warehouse, Yes, like like an L shape stage with the apex, so they're seating on two. Sides and then you know a lot of time any. Soliloqually you had to be done like to the apex. You're not looking at anybody right because that way they can all SEEO emoting and doing the thing.
15 You know. So there's a lot of they've built a new theater and now I haven't. I was just looking at auditions though. Really, okay, so this is a this is a whole new world for you, then, Phoebe. I mean that you've been doing you know, how plays are? You know, like you give up your life. You gotta go to rehearsals. You're up not late, I don't. I got a bed four nine o'clock. But you know, just just not discuss our discussion today. I mean, you have been through a lot of difficult times, but also it sounds like you've been through a lot of transformative things, a lot of very positive experiences. So it's been it sounds like it's constantly reinventing or constantly or experiencing.
58 Something and constantly realizing, don't reinvent the wheel. You already do this thing, just offer a sound bath. And the church was doing this. One person was doing regular sound baths with crystal bowls, and she moved away and they said, hey, and I was doing mine kind of sporadically and trying to reinvent the thing, and they're like, do you want to do it every month on Friday night? And I'm like sure, So then now people are coming. The guy, I've had more of an audience than I've ever had, and I've had. Book signings there and like all kinds of things. We'll get to books.
38 But I think, also, did it did that get you on the path to becoming a certain I'm sorry, I don't know what. The is it a certification or you're at you're at your train. I'm a reiki master that's certified, and then the sound healing is more intuitive, but a raking. Master requires a lot, and you become certified in that. Okay, there's three levels, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. But then turning sixty, I'm like, no, sweat sixty whatever, whatever, I mean, forty was fine, and then my body starts breaking down. My body's like oh and you know, you know you go to somebody and you say, you know, my hip hurts.
24 And and they're like, well, that kind of happens at your age. I hate that. I hate let they tell you that. They don't have an answer. They're just like, totly, you don't tell me that I'm not old. My parents were playing tennis in their sixties. Yeah, what is it? So let me switch gears just a little bit too. Have you through your transitions in different phases of what you've gone through, have you experienced any forms of agism and have you not gotten something that. You wanted because you believe it was you're something to do with your age. Yes, I mean spiritually I look at it and go, well, I'm glad I didn't get that. But but yeah, there was a time going through the divorce when I needed to go back to teaching, and so I was applying for jobs and getting interviews. I'd go to those interviews and I usually knew somebody on the panel.
22 They would tell me after the you know, later they called me you did great. You know, you had great answers to all the questions. You have incredible experience. Your letters of recommendation are supreme, and you know they. Loved you and all this stuff, and then they but they're going another way. And in the. School district, the way salaries. Work is, you know, kind of based on how many units, you know, classes you've taken. And I was I was a hog for units. I was always wanting to learn more. So I had so many units. I was off the chart.
07 And you know, they're trying to get the cheapest deal they can, so they to. Follow those units. Phebe when they see your accreditation units, they know. They have to pay you there. They have to. Yeah, they don't have to give you all your years. They usually don't transfer all your years. But like when I moved from San Jose up here, I had four years, they gave me five, you know, credit for this that moves you up on the pay scale and I'm going down. But that's one, isn't it. But and then I moved, you know, from school to school and they're like, oh, yeah, we'll give you.
47 All ten years. And that's unusual. They have to really want you to give you your full ten years and all your units. But the units are they have to put you on the scale where you belong at least it was at the time, and they would do anything to, you know, go the cheaper route. So they want with somebody that was less experienced, who didn't do as well in the interview, who couldn't give them the program that they wanted. I could, you know, And that happened more than once. And of course they can't say it's because you're too expensive or because you're too old. You know. But what we go through, all those years of experience, we.
34 Pay for all those units, we pay for those classes, We go through those the effort to take the classes, and it's worth nothing. M can't get a lot. The experience is worth a lot, and I mean the experience and what you would bring to the table with that experience would be incredibly beneficial to your students or those stence. But in an administrator that's siding who to hire, they're going to go with the cheaper one, gotcha. So that that to me was agism. Okay, like you got it. Yeah, I get punished for being excellent. I got passed over because I'm too good.
21 It happens to a lot of people. I mean a lot of people just filling out applications now online because most of it is electronic. Look at the years that you graduate. I mean, we've talked about this before. Possibly if you had the year you graduated college. The high school, they can make a quick assumption about how old you are from your submissions and not. Even bother with you. There's no way to cover that up. And they want to see a sequential like, well, what happened in these years you. Know was going on there? Why did you leave and then come back? You know, there's that kind of thing. But yeah, moms deal with that all the time. Lot I raised my kids. Oh well, but now you're not significant enough, like you're not in alignment with what's going on, so you can't be relevant. Yeah, but I've been with kids, and I've been in the community, and you know, there's a lot of relevance that you can bring.
15 Well, we want to continue talking about you, and I think we should talk about the fact that you are a published author. Oh so, I meant to get a copy of one of my don't have one one. One one of How many are there? There are two published that I am best International best selling author for Amazon. It's not a New York New York uh, you know, Times or whatever, but it's it's a big deal. It's a big deal. Yeah. And the last book I publish is called soul Biz. So they are all short stories of people sharing their experience in a soulful business and it and sometimes it was you know, advice for somebody.
07 Who wants to start a soul of the business. Or you know, encouragement or how to do something that. What does soulful business mean? What is it so like you know, like a spiritual business or healer or you know reiki, sound healings and all the things that I was in talking about. But it could be anything. It could be a writer, could be a yoga teacher, anything that's you know, and an entrepreneur. Is usually quite soulful. You're following your calling to do something that you you. Have followed you know, some sort of guidance to do that. Yeah.
48 And then the book that I have coming. Up this year is called Voice and Vision. Use your voice to bring your vision to life. And that is the one you're the soul yes, whereas the others were collaborations, right. The other ones were collaborations. I had, you know, a couple of entries in the last book, just one in the first book, and then this one I've been I wrote it in a year, I took another year to edit my you know, personal editing, and this year has been working with the editor to get it wrapped up and it should publish this year.
35 And this is basically this is you writing this book. Wow. So that's that Tho's been departures also, and you're like coming from having comments in a book and then adding and then finally creating one of your I'm sure there'll be other. Books after this. Yeah, and transformative as well. Because my father was an English professor CSM College of Samatao, and so he was very critical of anything we wrote. And I remember in seventh grade, I went to Turnbull. I know you guys went to Barrel, but I loved my seventh grade English teacher, and he said, I wanted to have your parents read.
17 Over it before you turn it in. So I did. I maybe it to my dad and he handed it back to me, all read marks. And I didn't even look at those red marks. They could have been encouragements, but I just saw read and it crushed me, you know, so I vowed never to show him anything that I wrote. And so, you know, his criticism just is like in me, you know, so always beating myself up. But the editor that I have, he runs a group and really supports us that are writing.
58 A lot of people are writing memoirs. Everyone's writing a different kind of book, but call some soulful books, like they're from your heart right, something that you feel called to write. And we have to address this. What is that noise? That is a cockatoo? I thought it was Gary for a minute. I thought, maybe do you need a snack? Gary? Hungry? I thought it was me too. Well, we closed the door so that he wouldn't be allowed. That's puddle Casey. Casey has a cockatoo. Remember Bretta had that big white bird. That's the kind of bird. He is very low.
40 Tuddles needs a snack. This is bedtime. Oh okay, Casey's in there taking like a baby goes to bed five. Get down everything, Well, just a couple more questions. We'll get in and get back to Cuddles. You can all get a snack. I'll take the computer over. These books are coming, but it sounds like, okay, just to cap out up a bit like these. You've been through a lot of transformations, You've done a lot of things, but it seems like every experience is actually growing to something bigger and better. Every time it sounds like you're really on a really great path towards whatever. The next thing is. Right, Yeah, do you feel that too. That's my that's my m is to stay open and follow what I'm guided to do next, even if it feels like it's backwards, even if it means, oh, I'm resting for the next two weeks because my leg hurts, my hip.
39 Or my back or I don't know, I. Just didn't It's hurt. Everyone's hips hurt. It happens, all right. Let me ask you a different question and you can answer either one. I'm gonna give you two, and you can decide which one. Is there something you wish people would stop asking you or is there a question that. You wish would start asking you? Either one something that you hate it when people ask or is there something you love it when people ask? Well, I love it when people ask me questions about, you know, when they experience my sound sound healing and they and they ask questions about like, how did you do that or what was that sound?
27 Or of course usually I don't have an answer. I'm like, I don't know, it just comes out. So you like it when people jump into and ask questions about what you're doing. I mean, that's a good thing. So there's a lot of positivity to that. Yeah, especially because when I first started doing it, I just thought there were weird sounds. I didn't have any frame of reference to like, what are these sounds? What does it sound like? And over time people would. Share with me, Oh, that sounded like Ti bet monk, or that sounded like a Native American medicine man. And you know, I'd hear people say these, and then some people would get more specific about that medicine man. They're like, yeah, I saw Cherokee with his full regalia. And so it's really.
16 Fun when they when they ask me or they share what but they saw our experience? Okay, okay, question for you, if you at this age now, if you could go back to a younger age and give that person some advice, and you can pick whatever age, what advice might that be? I would say to my sophomore self, I don't know, she might have been fourteen, fourteen or fifteen somewhere on there. That it's not what you think it is, but it's going to be great.
57 Okay. I can see that throughout my life. Actually, you think it is still gonna be really great. It sounds like it's it's great now. It sounds like it's been great. For a while for you. Yeah, that is good. Good for you? I mean did yeah if you asked me that. Last week, when I had to say no to going to Gary's picnic, I. Was pretty bummed that I wasn't going to be able to do that. You know, but we've had the chance to do this. This is better. No, I don't want to qualify that because I didn't I didn't get to see everybody. I didn't get all the hugs and you. Know, the dodge the bullet. That's what I got to say.
40 Really, what I thought it was probably good. I'm kidding, there's a lot of it. I'm just sorry. I saw pictures and I know Lumpia is good. Whenever they bring food, it's so good, but it's usually got gluten in it. So I'm like, Gary, takes a bite and tell me how good it is? Can you describe it a little bit? Is it? But we've been uh shared enough meals together to know that while it's limited in some respect, you're there's a lot of things you can you can go to pretty much.
21 Any restaurant, you'll find something. Oh yeah, and I'm not as restrictive as I used to. But if I do eat gluten, I've tried and it does not do well. But that's when my joints really hurt. So but the doctors. Won't say that. They won't say they yeah, or an. MRI or like, that's what I have coming up next, the MRI to see see what's going on. Okay, So are you ready for a quick lightning round? Okay, lightning round? Hit me. So I'm just gonna ask you a couple of questions. You just tell that's what you think. Now you probably none of these are actually gonna work.
03 So it's gonna red wine, white wine, champagne, beer or nothing. Or water nothing water. I don't trust the water. I've got my own, my own personal you know. So movies comedy, horror or romance, a romance? Okay? Are you a morning person or a night out? Okay? Buffy the Vampire Sayer are walking dead? Not good? Buffy? Okay? Cats are dogs? We're birds. We're birds now, I know Phobe's I've had a dog. We have a couple of dogs. We got birds, but cats. Sweet snacks or savory snacks.
43 Actually like them both, but you know I like them both, like them together. One of the questions, got your salty crunch with you? She's throwing us curveballs now, gre God, nothing in your in or hundreds of unread. Emails, nothing in my inbox okay, but a lot of saved ones. Okay, throwing another curve But we can't just guess. City life or small. Town small town? Okay. Sushi or tacos tacos. Tacosky gluten free tacos. Do you do the cooking or do you do the dishes?
27 I do? Okay? Uh? Pineapple pizza, pineapple on pizza, Yes or no? I say yes. Husband says no, that's not a thing. He said, that's not a thing. I go it is. It's quite good. Maybe it's not a thing on his half of the pizza. Okay. I won't ask you the garrier, don one, because I already got the answer on my. Last time we spoke yesterday, it wasn't in my favor carries my guys. Time travel. But I love you Don, by the way, Okay, yes I know, but you've always be my first. If you were doing time travel, would you like to go twenty years in the future or twenty years back.
10 That's a hard one. I just I'd like to go in the future. Okay, I've already been there. Okay, do you want to do that again? Let's not do that again, can you? If you recall, I have two quick stories that I mentioned in the entruim. Oh yeah, I will share them now. So one was I said that after I left Santa Barbara. You see Santa Barbara, I kept in touch with you bad go to visit her. So on one of the visits, she had an apartment and she's asleep in the room. There's be four cell phones. So the house phone was in the living room and I was staying over and I was sleeping in the living room and whatever morning the phone rang and her bedroom door was closed. So for why I picked it up, you know, hello, and person They're like, is Phoebe there?
02 He's a woman. I should just submit it. Knock on her door, Phoebe, it's your mom. And then I hear the conversation. That's Gary, Like, oh, it's Gary, because I'm just like, who is this man answering my daughters. Sleeping the first thing in the morning? Yeah, yeah, right, Oh, it's gary scary, no problem. The other one friend, well, I was one of two people honored to be asked by Phoebe to walk her down the aisle for her wedding four years ago. So they're friend is Bruce. So we're all from high school friends.
45 She's kept in touch with both of us, so you know, she couldn't pick. So I'll do both. So we did the rehearsal and so they get you apart, where who gives this person away? And that's what we both stand up and say we do. But Bruce was a little hesitant about doing that because he thought everyone's gonna think we're a couple. Is that what he was worried about? And I'm thinking, I know he's married to Nancy, or like, you could have done worse. So those are the two. Little was just worried about the whole, you know, like, who are we to give you to anybody we don't own?
28 You know. Well, I mean there were people in the room that were Casey's friends or family or people that didn't know Bruce or myself, so they. Just see, you know, who are these guys? About two men? And we sit together and like who gets her? Waving both that we do. Hey, it was after the pandemic, just barely out of lockdown, so I don't think people were judging anything. They were just happy to be around other people for a little while. I'm just gonna say my feelings were a little hurt. So, Phoebe, we have to ask one other question. We have to ask one last question too, because you know the title of the segments. Ain't nobody got time for that? So what do you not have time for anymore?
10 What is it you just don't want to deal with? I have a few of these, but I don't clean my floors. That doesn't mean I'm to have a pig sty. I have a robot that doesn't. Oh yeah, you've got no time for no time for cleaning. Up floors, And I also have no time for trying to fix other people. Like sometimes I just think I know everything. I used to I used to think I knew everything and I should tell you how you could fix whatever your problem was. If they didn't ask, I got nothing to say. Right, okay, good one up to me?
51 Right on my business? So, Phoebe, where can we find your books? How do we find them? Where are we located? And what about a website. You can find my upcoming book and get on the wait list at my website Phoebefazio dot com, slash book, or you just go to my website. It'll pop up, it'll invite you, and there's no obligation to buy it. It's just so that you'll get notified when it comes. But you can read a little bit more about it and and be the first to find out. You can also find me on YouTube. Just go to YouTube and put in Phoebe Fazio and you'll find me. My other books, you can find them on Amazon, I think, but you won't find them under my name because I'm one of many authors. Really hang out right, But it was. Just that connection was my cousins to my lived next door. Seems like a lot of us in high school were like, I know you from from elementary school. Weren't we kindergarten together? You know? I think Byron was that one of my young birthday parties?

You know, reading from here is like four hours away. So I've gone up there several times, once for her birthday. Once she may have been a play at that time, so but I definitely went up for the two plays. I went up after her daughter, her first daughter was born, and then I was up there several years ago for her wedding. So yeah, I've gone up several times.
