Of Mice and Men is a novella written by John Steinbeck and published in 1937. The story takes place during the Great Depression in California, following the journey of two migrant workers, George Milton and Lennie Small. George and Lennie are traveling together and looking for work as ranch hands. George is small and quick-witted, while Lennie is large and mentally disabled. They dream of owning their own farm and living off the land, with Lennie tending to the rabbits they would keep. The two men find work at a ranch, where they meet other characters such as Candy, an old swamper who has lost one hand; Curley, the boss's aggressive son; Curley's flirtatious wife, who is never given a name; and Slim, a skilled mule driver who is respected by all. Lennie falls in love with the soft fur of a puppy given to him by Slim, but accidentally kills it through his rough handling.
