#6 Causes of Mental Dis-ease

Welcome to Episode 6 of Between The Ears. Host Arnold Beekes explores what he calls "mental dis-ease" rather than mental illness, rejecting the idea that most people struggling with anxiety, depression, or stress have something medically wrong with them. Instead, Arnold walks through four factors he sees as the root causes: the stress of living two lives (meeting others' expectations versus living authentically), a fear-based societal environment amplified by media and corruption, heavy smartphone and social media use, and reduced sunlight exposure. The episode closes with the show's signature segment on everyday beauty, featuring a Canadian woman's story of rescuing a crow and being unofficially adopted into its flock.

Topics Covered

  • Why Arnold uses "dis-ease" instead of "illness" or "disorder"
  • Challenging the chemical imbalance explanation for depression and anxiety
  • The difference between the healthcare industry and genuine health
  • Cause 1: stress from living two lives — meeting others' expectations vs. living authentically
  • Cause 2: a fear-based societal environment amplified by media, movies, and corruption
  • Cause 3: smartphone and social media use, comparison culture, and "digital dementia"
  • Cause 4: Arnold's views on reduced sunlight exposure and its effect on mood and wellbeing
  • Reframing struggle as a response to environment, not personal failure
  • The show's closing theme of everyday beauty: a woman in British Columbia rescued a crow and was later "adopted" by its flock

Ep6 Between the Ears Causes of Mental Dis-ease
Welcome, I'm Arnold Bekus and I enable you to have a better life between the ears. Why is that so crucial? Because your inner state creates your outer reality. Today's topic is causes of mental dis-ease.

Why am I using the word dis-ease? Dis-ease is the opposite of ease, it's not easy, it's like things which are impacting you not in a good way. I'm intentionally not using the word illness or disorder, which the traditional medical establishment makes you feel like there is something wrong with me, in particular with my brain and with my head brain and I need medicine and I need doctors and therapists to help me with that because there's something wrong in my head. Well, what I'm saying for most of people, the majority of people who are now labeled with a mental illness are not sick.

There's nothing wrong with your head. One of the main reasons why people say that you got to be prescribed all kinds of SSRIs for depression and anxiety, those are the medicines which are prescribed the most in the world. They say you have a chemical imbalance in your head and you need the medicine to recover and to create balance.

Well, it has been proven through a lot of research that there is no chemical imbalance in your brain. So that is why I instead of talking about mental illness or mental sickness or mental disorders, I talk about a mental dis-ease and actually instead of those words I rather like, and it's not semantic, it's really important, I talk about mental and emotional health and I know that also here the establishment talks about that as the industry. It's the mental health industry or it's the healthcare industry.

Well, I tell you both got nothing to do with health. They only deal with what they label as sickness or illness. The traditional healthcare industry try and talk to your doctor and say which diet is good for your longevity and what should you do to increase your lifespan and your health span.

What should you do? Well, he will look at you like you're an alien and you ask questions which he don't know. I was in a few years ago, I was a long time in the hospital because of a car accident and my diet is mostly vegan and the people who trying to say what are you eating and say vegan, they had no clue what I was talking about. They had no clue what to give me as nutrition.

They literally, the only thing at some point in time is like I get the same food as everybody else without the meat. All these things, they know nothing about health. They know about illness or sickness or if you've broken your leg, they can help with that, but this got nothing to do with health.

So, what I'm doing with my work in brain fitness is to help you really focusing on how can you recover your mental and emotional health, your brain fitness. So, what are the, in my opinion, the main causes of this disease? Well, number one is stress. Now, you would say we all know stress, but I think stress is mainly caused because we live two lives.

In a previous episode, I explained to you that we live mostly two kinds of lives. One is living someone else's life, which most of us do. We try to meet the expectations of parents, teachers, bosses, spouses and we think that if we meet those expectations, we're okay.

That is the life which a lot of us live. Well, at least from nine to five in the office, but sometimes also outside of those times. And there's a partial or smaller part of your life where you live your own life.

That might be after six o'clock when you get home from your work and you finally start doing what you love to do or in the weekend where you do your hobbies or you play your sports. But there is a stress, there is friction, because in one area of your life which covers most of your time, your time consumption is living someone else's life and that living your own life. Those two lives which you're living, which is in itself already tiring, that creates friction and friction is another word for stress.

So that is a main cause of stress and the research is clear, though rarely discussed, chronic fear and stress are at the root of nearly every modern disease. So that stress is not innocent. It creates, it is become chronic.

Well, you know how many people say already like the only time in the week which they like is the weekend. So on Monday if you're at the office, people say how was your weekend and on Wednesday, Thursday they start to ask what are you going to do for the weekend. Whereas it should be, well, it should be better if it's the other way around, that five days a week you're fine and two days a week you're not fine.

Well, of course, we prefer seven days a week that you're totally living your own life. But anyway, it indicates that something is wrong with our system and that that stress is not nice to have. So number one is stress and the stress of friction between living two lives at the same time.

The second cause is, I would say, that we are currently living in a completely dysfunctional corrupt society that is based on fear. Now you might say, well that has always been the case. Yes, I think so, but it is now through technology and media.

It can reach you everywhere. It can reach you 24 by 7 and it has an impact on you all the time. Look and media is not only your phone or social media but it's everything.

Look at movies. A lot of movies are based on fear. Look at songs.

Music, a lot of songs with people talk about fear and losing your loved one and everything around that. So you're constantly being bombarded with things which increase your fear. Don't eat this food.

Look out for this. It's everywhere and at the same time we are having the corruption of especially government and politicians is, I would say, it's exploding. It's not that it's never been there but it's really going totally crazy all over the world and that has an impact if you and well not if we live in an environment where there is fear and corruption and nepotism everywhere.

Of course that's going to influence us. So that's the second course. Number three and I already pre preluded to that, that is the combination of social media and smartphones where people are well if you look at the statistics it's it's terrifying especially young people that they are eight nine hours per day using those things and that focus on especially reels and videos or just a couple of minutes or text again it's all a lot is based on fear and comparing yourself with other people which makes you feel lousy because between quote those other people seem to be successful and you are not.

By the way it's like you can well you got now AI videos but you you got all kinds of software to make you look good on a picture or a video that makes you feel lousy because it's like hey I don't look as good. I don't have such a big car. I don't have such a big house.

I don't have such a handsome partner. So it's like everything is based on comparison and it makes you feel lousy and it creates this state where there's instant gratification. You need to have your a text or a video.

It's no longer than two minutes. You want your dopamine hit. It's only based on one aspect and it says this is the truth which I tell you most of the cases not and it creates digital dementia, brain fog.

So it's like you cannot think clearly, you cannot concentrate, you cannot recall any stuff which you see. So your phone is basically manipulating your brain and your perception. That is number three.

Number four is something which a lot of people don't know but in a lot of countries actually and it's growing the government is blocking the sun. Yes, you are hearing that correctly. They're blocking the sun.

They spray with airplanes. They spray all kinds of stuff in the air to block the sun from what they say is like the poisonous radiation which creates global warming and everything around it. So we need to block the sun.

We can have a whole podcast around that and I won't do it but you can do the research yourself and realize that this is not something new. It's like even I believe in the UK it is allowed by law that the government blocks the sun. So it's not the same if you what I did recently you fly over large parts of Europe you only see a blanket of clouds.

There's no sun. It's only blanket that the sun is kind of gone most of the time. But that blocking the sun has an impact on your mood.

It is an impact on your health. It has an impact on your well-being. Think about it.

When are you feeling happy and relaxed and joyful when there's a bit of sunshine. You can be outside and there's a nice sun and there's a blue sky and everything. My last few years when I lived in Europe the sun was blocked more and more and I saw it had an impact on my mood and now I moved to South America and well fortunately for the moment in the country where I'm living the sun is not blocked.

So I see a lot of days a little bit of sunshine and some blue sky and I tell you my mood improved a lot. So just to recapitulate what I said are causes of our disease and again you're not sick you're not ill there's nothing wrong with you. All of these things are intentionally put on us to impact us and to make us easily controllable and if you're unhealthy it's easier to manipulate you.

So be aware that you should use all of these things rather consciously than unconsciously because it impacts your mental and emotional health. So I listed four things the stress caused by living two lives living your own life and living someone else's life, the completely dysfunctional corrupt society based on fear, the usage of smartphone and social media and blocking the sun. We conclude today's session with some example with an well I think really great example of everyday beauty.

There was a lady called Leah Wilson, she was living in British Columbia in Canada and she was on a walk when she spotted a young crowd trapped inside the roof gutter but a firetruck happened to be parked nearby and I was like hey you look like you want to save a crowd today she recalls with a laugh. The firefighters agreed brought the ladder over and once the crowd was free Wilson that lady took it to a wildlife veterinarian and as she carried the bird latched onto her finger. He latched onto my finger and held on she said that was life changing.

She didn't know how life changing until her next walk when a crow flew down and dropped a small feather bundle at her feet. That was the first of several thank you gifts left by the local flock of crows who had apparently decided that Wilson was one of theirs. Now every time she goes out the crows circle around her.

The original crow she rescued is easy to spot because it's still wearing the band from when he was released into the world. Her local indigenous upbringing always gave her a sense of connection to the natural world but this turned out to be something more. She has now become part of the flock of crows.

So please remember we need your uniqueness. Be a better maker for yourself, for others, for the world.
