#13 What do you do effortlessly?
In this Q&Q episode of Between the Ears, Arnold Beekes asks one of the most underrated questions you can ask yourself — and then delivers a quote that reframes addiction in a way that might just change how you see your own habits. Short, sharp and thought-provoking as always.
In this Q&Q episode of Between the Ears, Arnold Beekes asks one of the most underrated questions you can ask yourself — and then delivers a quote that reframes addiction in a way that might just change how you see your own habits. Short, sharp and thought-provoking as always.
The Question
What do you do effortlessly?
- Society tells us that if something doesn't require struggle, it's not worth doing — that is wrong
- The things that come easily to you are where your natural talent lives
- Effortless ability is not something to dismiss — it's something to build on and put out into the world
- Whether it's cooking, writing, singing or something else entirely — if it flows, that's a signal worth paying attention to
- You don't need to fight your way to your calling — sometimes you just need to notice what already comes naturally
The Quote
"People are addicted because they want to escape their normal state of suffering and suppression."
- Addiction is not a character flaw — it's a response to an inner state that feels unbearable
- Social media, alcohol, drugs, even scrolling — they all deliver a temporary dopamine hit that masks the real issue
- Arnold spent years drinking to decompress from corporate stress — until he started working for himself 25 years ago and stopped entirely
- When you build an inspiring inner state, the need for escape disappears
- If you spend more than an hour a day on your phone without knowing what you're doing — that is worth examining honestly

Ep 13 Between the Ears Q&Q
Welcome, I'm Arnold Beekes and this is the question and quote version of the Between the Ears podcast. The goal is to enable you to unleash and use your uniqueness. The question, what do you do effortlessly? You might think, why are you asking that question? I can do it easily, it cost me not much effort.
Why is that so relevant? Well, I think it's one of the most relevant things in our lives is to figure out, to discover, this cover, remove the of what comes easy to us, where we have natural talent. Things which come easy to us, which cost none or limited effort, are the things where you are highly talented and things where you can differentiate yourself. That is opposed to our society, our education, our upbringing, all the stories which you read.
It's like we should struggle, work hard, struggle. There's also this army war related language, like we need to be warriors, we need to fight this and fight that. No, because that creates resistance, that creates tiredness, that creates in your head pollution.
So focus on the things which come easy to you, which are effortless. And they're extremely, extremely valuable. We're taught to ignore those things because if you don't struggle, then it's not worth doing.
No, if maybe other people are struggling to sing and you can sing effortless, well, maybe that's your talent. Maybe every day you can create a new meal of something which you never did before and people think it's delicious. Maybe that's your talent.
Maybe you should work on that and put it out in the world. Maybe you write very easily. So every day you write something in your diary and it comes easy and you love doing it.
That is so important to find out, to discover for yourself. So what is it? And it doesn't have to be one thing, it can be two, three things. What do you do effortlessly? Quote, people are addicted because they want to escape their normal state of suffering and suppression.
And I put normal between quotes. In the same way where I said there's a lot of language which is used like we gotta fight, we gotta be warriors, we gotta struggle and if you it's about survival. We think it's normal that we are suffering most of the time.
We think it's normal to suppress our own ideas, our own insights, our emotions. That is not a nice feeling because suppression of anything, suffering of any kind, that's not nice. So we don't like that and kind of unconsciously we want to escape that feeling.
So how do we escape that feeling? We become addicted to something which makes us between quotes feel good, gives us a dopamine hit in your brain. It's like oh that's nice. And one of the main things where people are using is social media.
It's like if I look at a few videos or reels, these short videos, then it's like oh now I feel better. But all these videos are just one minute, two minutes and and then you get the dopamine hit. Maybe it's a beautiful man or a beautiful girl or it's a nice car or the other way around and that happens as well.
You see people who are suffering even more than you are. But it's a way to escape. It's also an addiction.
Social media is an addiction just like drinking alcohol, smoking, drugs, medicine. They're all addictions. I would say that most people are addicted to something and if you say I'm not, well check if you are more than one hour per day on your phone and what do you do.
So and again I'm not judging this. I did myself. I used to drink when I worked in the corporate world quite a lot of alcohol at home.
Well that was my way of between quotes relaxing, of escaping the daily stress. So people are addicted because they want to escape the normal state of suffering and suppression. But if you create the inspiring state inside of you, you don't need those addictions.
So since I'm working for myself which is now around 25 years, I stopped drinking alcohol. I don't use anything that is addictive and I feel very very healthy and energetic. So I hope you do too.
Remember we need your uniqueness. Be a better maker for yourself, for others, for the world.
