You're Being Compared Before You Ever Get the Call with John Way, Katie Lantukh and Lisa McGuire
Your Buyer Has Already Made a Decision: How AI, Authority and Differentiation Shape the B2B Shortlist
Most service providers assume the real selling happens once they get into the room.
The prospect books the call, hears the story, understands the process, and finally sees what makes the business different.
The 2026 Atlanta B2B Buyer Preferences Study suggests that much of that decision-making is happening earlier.
In this episode of Your Passion, Purpose and Personal Brand, Lisa McGuire is joined by B2B lead generation and conversion specialist John Way and brand positioning and messaging strategist Katie Lantukh to examine how buyers are researching, comparing, and choosing professional service providers.
One of the most revealing findings is how prepared buyers already are when they begin looking. Many enter the process with three to eight potential providers in mind. They are not starting from zero. They are narrowing a field.
AI is now part of that process.
First-time buyers are using it to rank and shortlist providers. More experienced buyers are asking it to estimate costs and evaluate potential ROI. When information is missing from a company’s website, buyers may turn to AI for an answer rather than contacting the business directly.
That creates a different kind of visibility problem.
A website can clearly explain a service and still leave a buyer unsure why that provider belongs at the top of the list. Familiar job titles, generic language, vague pricing, and broad claims of expertise make comparison easier, but they rarely make a business memorable.
John, Katie, and Lisa explore what buyers are actually looking for before they reach out, including price, proof of expertise, comparison with alternatives, and a clear sense of what working together will involve.
They also look at the role of relationships and referrals, especially within Atlanta’s highly relational business community. A referral may open the door, but the buyer will often do their own research before deciding whether to walk through it.
That is where differentiation becomes more than a messaging exercise.
Sometimes the website is doing exactly what it was built to do. It is representing a version of the business that is no longer current.
Lisa introduces three levels of identity-led leadership: self-leadership, authority leadership, and marketplace leadership. Together, they offer a way to examine whether the business has evolved beyond the way it is currently being presented.
Who have you become?
What have you earned the authority to lead?
Can the marketplace recognize that authority without requiring you to explain it in a sales conversation?
Those questions sit underneath much of what buyers are evaluating.
The conversation also addresses a tension many business owners feel around transparency. Companies often hesitate to share pricing, process details, or direct comparisons because they worry about losing leverage. The buyer research tells a more complicated story. When people cannot find the information they need, some move on while others ask AI to fill in the gaps.
Either way, the business loses control of the interpretation.

One question from the conversation is worth carrying with you:
If AI had to tell a potential client what you should be chosen for, what would it say? And would that answer still feel true to you?
Buyers are making judgments long before the first conversation. The more clearly your business reflects what you do now, why it matters, and what makes your work distinct, the easier it becomes for the right people to recognize where you belong.
