When the Obvious Career Path Is No Longer Yours: Zach Rodriguez on Money, Meaning & Living Well Now
What happens when the path in front of you makes perfect sense, and you know it is no longer yours?
After 10 years in the Navy as an MH-60R helicopter pilot and aircraft commander, Zach Rodriguez had an obvious next move: commercial aviation. It would have been lucrative, respected, predictable, and easy to explain.
He chose something else.
Today, Zach is the founder of Outlive Financial Planning, a fee-only fiduciary firm helping high-income millennials and families align their time, health, and money so they can live well now while planning wisely for later.
But this episode is about more than a career pivot.
It is about recognizing the thread running through a life that can look disconnected from the outside.
Zach’s story includes surviving a helicopter crash landing, navigating financial instability early in life, watching his father face cancer, becoming deeply interested in health and longevity, studying soil science, becoming a father, and eventually questioning what accumulating wealth is actually for.
None of those experiences appeared to belong together.
Until they did.
In this conversation, we explore the difference between manufacturing differentiation and integrating the story that is already yours. Zach shares how his seemingly unrelated experiences became the foundation for a financial planning philosophy centered on resilience, intentional living, risk, family, health, and the finite nature of time.
We also challenge one of the most common assumptions in traditional financial planning: that the goal is simply to save as much as possible for someday.
Because building wealth matters. But so does knowing what the wealth is for.
If you are standing at the edge of a career transition, questioning a path that still works but no longer fits, or wondering how the different chapters of your life connect to the work you are here to do, this conversation may help you see your own story differently.
