Why Writing Sucks…But We Do It Anyway

Why Writing Sucks…But We Do It Anyway

By Gil Schmidt

Because if we don’t write, we don’t feel complete.

Because writing gives us satisfaction like nothing else does.

Because writing is a constant challenge and meeting it is our form of defiance.

Because calling ourselves “a writer” taps into our ego.

Because we’d rather write than talk to strangers.

Because we want to read more things similar to our writing.

Because we enjoy living inside the chaos of our minds.

Because we know the difference between solitude and loneliness.

Because we are brave enough to be vulnerable to every reader.

Because our moods depend on having a sense of control over something in Life.

Because reading is a passion, and we wish to share it with others.

Because creating something new is a deep-seated human drive.

Because many of us can do it anywhere, anytime.

Because many of us love the idea of a special spot solely for writing.

Because no matter how much society changes, storytelling matters.

Because we have the chance to make money solely with our minds. And fingers.

Because diving into our writing is a unique personal freedom.

Because we are not inclined to taking physical risks, so we take mental/emotional ones.

Because writing quiets all the outer voices to make clearer one’s Inner Voice.

Because even when we act cool, we feel amazing when our writing is genuinely praised.

Because we can make ourselves laugh or cry, just with words.

Because we can live with more uncertainty than most people.

Because a writer’s world is a unique environment, like and unlike ourselves.

Because immortality is forever within a writer’s reach.

Because writing is never mastered: it is only tamed to our will’s content.

Because we can compare ourselves to very famous writers, and believe it.

Because every finished work is an unspoken: “I told you so.”

Because ever so often, what appears on the page is a complete surprise.

Because we don’t need other people to believe in us, only in our work.

Because creating a fan of one’s writing is a majestic achievement.

Because seeing one’s work “in the wild” never really gets old.

Because the struggle makes the end result worthwhile.
