The Stanley Cup playoff semi-finals get off to a great start for Canada!
Last night, the Premier of Alberta aired her recorded pre-committee vote announcement that she was going to bulldoze over everyone anyway by personally imposing a referendum on Canadian unity.
However, Canada most famous "pick a lane, lady" utterly refused to do so in the process, and opted to choose a path forward in which she tries to have it all, but that ultimately makes nobody at all happy, thus instantly launching simultaneously both a civil war among the "Alberta allegedly conservative" movement and a revolt among the business community that potentially wholesale will sacrifice the pipeline implementation agreement she just entered into with the Government of Canada (and we can't imagine the PM is remotely impressed as this likely has him doing some contingency planning)
Smith is hoping the special, far-too-cute-by-half mess that only someone as shamelessly untethered to reality (or the laws of political gravity) as she is can create by constantly just trying to get through the current moment will allow her to keep the pipeline going (and not drive away investment for a generation), while not wearing the responsibility for being the one launching us into constitutional hyperdrive, while keeping the Seppies on board (just enough so she can keep her job), but still maintaining the fig leaf of pretense that she's a federalist...
Smith may have just taken the first step to finding out, for realzies this time, that while you can (over time) have it all, you just can't have it all at once.
