In our last episode, we explored why scientific validation is necessary for leadership assessment tools. According to the Harvard Business Review effective assessments should move beyond face validity to measure specific, evidence-based dimensions, including foundational traits, growth agility, and career competencies. We also provided some insights on why it is necessary for leadership assessment models and tools to be universally valued to avoid misinterpretation, abuse or confusion and models. Lastly, we addressed role oversimplification of some leadership assessment tools, especially when it comes to growth. Some of the leadership assessment tools create a fixed identity around something that might be fluid.

In this episode of Points of Leadership, we wrap up the last batch of limitations of leadership assessments. First, we explore how many leadership assessment tools treat strengths or geniuses as stable traits. Our discussion examines how the context of work environments can be different even for the same role. Context dependency is a gap many leadership assessment tools miss.

Secondly, we dive into over emphasis on productivity. Many of the leadership assessment tools tend to frame work through the lenses of efficiency and output. These are essential factors to performance metrics. However, creativity is the foundation for innovation. In a subscriber only article (Don’t Let Your Obsession with Productivity Kill Your Creativity) by Harvard Business Review, Bruce Daisley articulates why leaders should not allow their obsession with productivity kill their team’s creativity. Daisley states why every team needs a creative day, because creativity and productivity go hand in hand.

Lastly, we discuss and provide practical insights into interpersonal conflict nuances. Many leadership assessment tools explain conflict through mismatched strengths or geniuses. However, real human experiences in any work environment often involve systemic issues left unaddressed, cultural differences, trauma, communication styles or organizational chaos.
