The issue has become increasingly urgent. Japan's Imperial family now numbers just sixteen members, down significantly from previous generations. Of those sixteen, only five her men, and there are currently only three recognized heirs to the throne.

Supporters argue that doing so would strengthen the institution and provide future generations of potential heirs. Critics, however, so Japan is avoiding the more obvious solution.
