Prince Harry Backs Elizabeth Hurley in Court as Mail Trial Turns Raw and Emotional

Prince Harry Backs Elizabeth Hurley in Court as Mail Trial Turns Raw and Emotional

Prince Harry returns to the High Court for a fourth straight day, this time sitting in support as Elizabeth Hurley takes the witness stand in the explosive case against the publisher of the Daily Mail. Hurley delivers harrowing testimony, accusing the paper of landline tapping, live surveillance inside her home, stolen medical records and what she calls a “brutal invasion of privacy,” breaking down as she describes the toll on her family. Harry leaves court before lunch, a day after telling judges the Mail made Meghan’s life “an absolute misery,” while the defence argues the claims are unsupported and brought too late. Away from the courtroom, King Charles again keeps his distance despite being just miles away, and newly revealed witness statements show Harry naming William, Kate and his father as part of his account of how private royal communications may have been exposed.

Callarogus Shark Media. He hello and welcome through palace intrigue

2
00:00:10.839 --> 00:00:14.439
game your host, Mark Francis. Prince Harry returned to the

3
00:00:14.560 --> 00:00:17.800
High Court on Thursday morning, a day after delivering his

4
00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:21.920
own highly emotional testimony to support fellow claimants in their

5
00:00:22.039 --> 00:00:25.519
legal action against the publisher of The Daily Mail. The

6
00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:28.000
Duke of Sussex, who told court on Wednesday that the

7
00:00:28.039 --> 00:00:33.079
Associated Newspapers Limited had made his wife's life an absolute misery,

8
00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:36.520
arrived for a fourth consecutive day at the Royal Courts

9
00:00:36.520 --> 00:00:39.920
of Justice as actress Liz Hurley took the witness stand

10
00:00:39.960 --> 00:00:44.679
to give evidence in the long running unlawful information gathering case.

11
00:00:45.759 --> 00:00:48.439
Shortly before tenney in, Hurley arrived at the Royal Courts

12
00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:51.719
of Justice accompanied by her son Damien. Prince Harry arrived

13
00:00:52.119 --> 00:00:55.560
separately around ten oh five. Early entered the witness box

14
00:00:55.600 --> 00:00:58.359
mid morning and began giving evidence in her legal action

15
00:00:58.960 --> 00:01:02.079
against Associated Newspapers Limited in the publisher of The Daily

16
00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:04.599
Mail and Mail on Sunday. She is one of seven

17
00:01:04.680 --> 00:01:08.760
high profile figures bringing claims of unlawful information gathering, which

18
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:13.480
the publisher strongly denies. In her written evidence, Hurley told

19
00:01:13.519 --> 00:01:16.519
the court that The allegation her home land lines had

20
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:20.760
been tapped had left her devastated. She said the Mail's

21
00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:24.519
unlawful acts against me involved landline tapping my phones and

22
00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:29.280
recording my live telephone conversations, placing surreptitious mics on my

23
00:01:29.359 --> 00:01:33.159
home windows, stealing my medical information when I was pregnant

24
00:01:33.159 --> 00:01:38.920
with Damien, and other monstrous, staggering things, She continued. Above all,

25
00:01:38.959 --> 00:01:41.280
it was the discovery that the mail had tapped the

26
00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:44.040
landlines of my home phones and tape recorded my live

27
00:01:44.120 --> 00:01:48.159
telephone conversations that devastated me. I had not come across

28
00:01:48.200 --> 00:01:50.920
this brutal invasion of privacy in either of my two

29
00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:54.879
battles with the other newspapers. I felt crushed. It represented

30
00:01:54.920 --> 00:01:59.879
the ultimate violation of privacy. Hurley drew a distinction between

31
00:02:00.239 --> 00:02:04.280
voicemail interception and live surveillance, telling the court there's a

32
00:02:04.359 --> 00:02:08.680
vast difference, both indefensible, between someone intercepting a voicemail and

33
00:02:08.719 --> 00:02:11.840
someone listening in on every single phone call in your

34
00:02:11.919 --> 00:02:14.960
home and concealing a tape recorder and attaching it to

35
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:19.039
your home bt wiatt to record your live telephone conversations.

36
00:02:19.759 --> 00:02:22.400
I was seething when I discovered the mail did this

37
00:02:22.439 --> 00:02:27.560
to me. As questioning continued, Hurley became visibly emotional While

38
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:31.479
being shown articles connected to her claim. She declined to break,

39
00:02:31.879 --> 00:02:36.360
composing herself before continuing. Asked by A and L's barrister

40
00:02:36.400 --> 00:02:39.120
Anthony White k C Way she had not complained about

41
00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:41.800
the articles at the time they were published between two

42
00:02:41.879 --> 00:02:45.159
thousand and two and twenty eleven, Hurley replied that, in

43
00:02:45.319 --> 00:02:49.759
her understanding, complaints were for libel. She added they the

44
00:02:49.879 --> 00:02:52.639
articles were, in essence true. I believe that is because

45
00:02:52.680 --> 00:02:55.560
people were listening to me speak. I know that has

46
00:02:55.599 --> 00:02:57.800
not for me to discuss and give my opinion on.

47
00:02:58.520 --> 00:03:01.199
She told the court. There was only deeply hurtful and

48
00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:04.199
damaging articles about me and the media it became just

49
00:03:04.280 --> 00:03:08.960
a business of unpleasantness. Addressing suggestions that information came from

50
00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:11.960
her social circle, Hurley said, yes, there were leaks, but

51
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:14.680
they were not from my friends. Before the lunch break,

52
00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:16.919
Hurley broke down again while speaking about the impact on

53
00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:20.560
her family, saying everyone's privacy is being invaded in this

54
00:03:20.680 --> 00:03:23.560
terrible way and I feel very helpless about that. Prince

55
00:03:23.560 --> 00:03:26.199
Harry left the court shortly before twelve forty five pm

56
00:03:26.360 --> 00:03:28.960
after attending the morning session. And support of the other claimants.

57
00:03:29.360 --> 00:03:33.199
After proceedings resumed in the afternoon, questioning focused heavily on

58
00:03:33.240 --> 00:03:35.800
whether Hurley could have brought her claim earlier, a central

59
00:03:35.800 --> 00:03:38.439
plank of A and L's defense, which argues the case

60
00:03:38.439 --> 00:03:42.000
has been brought too late. In re examination by her

61
00:03:42.039 --> 00:03:45.879
own barrister, David Sherborne, Hurley rejected the suggestion that friends

62
00:03:45.879 --> 00:03:51.039
had briefed journalists anonymously on her behalf, calling the idea preposterous.

63
00:03:51.719 --> 00:03:54.360
As she concluded her evidence, Hurley told the court, with

64
00:03:54.439 --> 00:03:56.919
all due respect, I don't really want to be here.

65
00:03:57.080 --> 00:03:59.360
I don't really like talking about things that have happened

66
00:03:59.400 --> 00:04:01.360
to me in the past, and I find it very painful.

67
00:04:01.840 --> 00:04:04.520
In written submissions, Anthony White k C said the allegations

68
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:09.240
of unlawful information gathering by Associated's journalists, including of phone

69
00:04:09.280 --> 00:04:12.560
hacking and phone tapping, inconnection with Miss Hurley or her

70
00:04:12.599 --> 00:04:16.680
ten named associates, are unsupported by the evidence before the court.

71
00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:20.720
The court finished early with no further witnesses scheduled to

72
00:04:20.759 --> 00:04:26.000
give evidence on Friday. King Charles is, of course far

73
00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:28.759
too busy to meet with Harry. He departed London on

74
00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:31.959
Wednesday without seeing his youngest son, despite the two being

75
00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:35.240
just over two miles apart. As Prince Harry gave emotional

76
00:04:35.279 --> 00:04:39.480
evidence at the High Court, more pallis in just a moment,

77
00:04:44.439 --> 00:04:46.959
Prince Harry has named William and Kate in a written

78
00:04:47.079 --> 00:04:50.360
witness statement submitted to the High Court. In the document,

79
00:04:50.360 --> 00:04:52.920
the Duke of Sussex described his relationship with his brother

80
00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:56.279
and the way they shared private information. He wrote, due

81
00:04:56.279 --> 00:04:59.000
to his position, the press have always been very interested

82
00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:02.399
in him as brother, we naturally discussed personal aspects of

83
00:05:02.439 --> 00:05:05.079
our lives as we trusted each other with the highly

84
00:05:05.120 --> 00:05:09.399
sensitive information we shared about our private, family and professional lives.

85
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:14.480
Princess Catherine was also referenced in the statement, though only briefly.

86
00:05:14.680 --> 00:05:19.879
Her entry read HRH the Princess of Wales my brother's wife.

87
00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:22.720
Harry additionally mentioned his father, King Charles, stating that they

88
00:05:22.759 --> 00:05:25.519
remained in contact during the period covered by the claim.

89
00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:28.680
He wrote, during the relevant period, my father and I

90
00:05:28.759 --> 00:05:31.959
were in regular contact. The Duke of Sussex added that

91
00:05:32.040 --> 00:05:35.279
voicemails left on the King's landline by himself, relatives and

92
00:05:35.360 --> 00:05:39.639
royal household staff contained highly personal, private and sensitive information.

93
00:05:40.639 --> 00:05:43.839
The witness statement is one element of the broader case

94
00:05:43.839 --> 00:05:46.959
which centers on allegations that private information was obtained through

95
00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:50.839
unlawful means. The publisher continues to reject the claims and

96
00:05:50.959 --> 00:05:55.160
is contesting the action in court. In The Express, Emily

97
00:05:55.160 --> 00:05:59.199
Ferguson writes tense, tetchy and tiery, describes Prince Harry's two

98
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:02.680
hours on the witness, and it's an incredibly personal court

99
00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:05.920
case for him, with his evidence coming to a dramatic

100
00:06:06.040 --> 00:06:08.519
end yesterday when he described the idea that he shouldn't

101
00:06:08.519 --> 00:06:12.160
be entitled to a private life as disgusting. But the

102
00:06:12.199 --> 00:06:14.800
sheer emotion came when he spoke about the impact articles

103
00:06:14.839 --> 00:06:17.120
have had on the Duchess of Sussex, saying A and

104
00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:21.560
L have made my wife's life an absolute misery. His

105
00:06:21.639 --> 00:06:24.560
lips wobbled, voice cracked as he recalled the toll of

106
00:06:24.600 --> 00:06:27.560
thousands of articles of they've had on him and his family.

107
00:06:28.319 --> 00:06:31.040
Harry's resentment for being born into an institution where he

108
00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:33.720
felt unable to challenge what was being said about him

109
00:06:33.720 --> 00:06:36.560
in national newspapers was clear. In this case and the

110
00:06:36.600 --> 00:06:40.600
others brought against the press, is about reclaiming control. What

111
00:06:40.720 --> 00:06:43.639
started off as snappy, ill tempered remarks ended with the

112
00:06:43.720 --> 00:06:47.079
Duke showing his softer side as he discussed highly personal

113
00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:50.639
and private information that he claims was stolen from him.

114
00:06:51.360 --> 00:06:53.879
