As the fallout from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest continues, the central question is no longer just Andrew — it’s whether King Charles the Third can contain what the Palace now faces as a full-spectrum crisis. BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond notes that no one would envy the King’s position, caught between family loyalty and duty to the Crown, and that the Palace’s attempted separation of “Andrew the outcast” from “the institution” is a distinction the public simply doesn’t accept. To most people, the Palace, the Royal Family and the monarchy remain one and the same.

We also look at the major story that was swallowed by the scandal: the launch of the King’s environmental documentary Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision, which was immediately eclipsed by renewed Epstein-linked attention on Andrew. Palace sources describe anger behind the scenes and suggest the timing hardened Charles’s resolve to fully cooperate with investigators and distance his reign from his brother’s controversies. Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Andrew Hastings argues that dragging Andrew to Washington for a congressional appearance risks becoming a “show trial,” while the Express reaches for Tudor-era imagery to describe the speed with which the Palace has moved to push Andrew further out.

In Britain, political pressure is intensifying. Labour MP Rachael Maskell says Andrew should be stripped of remaining constitutional roles and removed from the line of succession, while Deep Crown argues the Counsellor of State issue is no longer a curiosity but a vulnerability — one that demands “managed removal,” not managed distance. And as the Daily Mail’s A.N. Wilson warns that the monarchy is now in grave jeopardy, the Palace is left trying to execute a single calculation: isolate the disgrace, protect the Crown, and keep the succession intact.

00:00:00.240 --> 00:00:11.560
Ah Calorougus Shark Media. Hello and welcome to Palace Intrigue Game.

2
00:00:11.599 --> 00:00:15.519
Your host Mark Francis for the BBC. Johnny Diamond writes,

3
00:00:15.960 --> 00:00:18.320
no one would envy the position of the King right now,

4
00:00:18.440 --> 00:00:20.920
his supporter's point to the actions he has already taken,

5
00:00:21.199 --> 00:00:23.519
stripping titles and home from his brother, as well as

6
00:00:23.640 --> 00:00:27.440
promising cooperation with any inquiries. Some believe the arrest will

7
00:00:27.480 --> 00:00:30.280
give the royal family and palace some breathing space, and

8
00:00:30.359 --> 00:00:33.399
that the treatment of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor as just another

9
00:00:33.439 --> 00:00:36.880
suspect will lessen the damage done. There can be little

10
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:39.240
doubt of the struggle the King has had balancing family

11
00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:42.439
loyalty and his duty to the crown. As Andrew withdrew

12
00:00:42.479 --> 00:00:45.880
from public life, so the palace withdrew from representing him.

13
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:49.399
But the distraction so important to the palace is entirely

14
00:00:49.439 --> 00:00:52.399
lost on most people. The Palace, the royal family, the

15
00:00:52.439 --> 00:00:55.920
monarchy all scene as one. Andrew may not have been

16
00:00:55.920 --> 00:00:58.399
on Buckingham Palace balcony for a while, but for more

17
00:00:58.439 --> 00:01:00.679
than six decades he was part of what his father,

18
00:01:00.719 --> 00:01:04.599
Prince Philip used to call the family business. The idea

19
00:01:04.719 --> 00:01:08.400
this is or was a private matter is for the birds.

20
00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:11.519
One story lost in the mix was how King charles

21
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:15.840
new documentary Finding Harmony a king's vision, was quickly overshadowed

22
00:01:15.879 --> 00:01:20.760
by renewed attention on Andrew. According to Pallace sources, the

23
00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:23.439
King had hoped the documentary would focus public attention on

24
00:01:23.480 --> 00:01:27.519
what he sees as his long term environmental legacy. Instead,

25
00:01:27.560 --> 00:01:31.640
headlines shifted almost immediately to fresh images and documents connected

26
00:01:31.640 --> 00:01:35.680
to Andrew and Epstein. A Palace source said, there is

27
00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:38.640
real anger behind the scenes, and if we are being candid,

28
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:41.519
some of it is rooted in pride. The King invested

29
00:01:41.640 --> 00:01:44.920
enormous personal energy into this documentary. It was not just

30
00:01:44.959 --> 00:01:48.359
another engagement or ceremonial duty. He regards it as a

31
00:01:48.680 --> 00:01:52.159
distillation of everything he has stood for over decades, a

32
00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:55.879
kind of mission statement for his reign. Charles believed the

33
00:01:55.920 --> 00:01:59.359
release would focus public attention on his environmental legacy, the

34
00:01:59.439 --> 00:02:01.719
years of care painting that were once mocked and now

35
00:02:01.760 --> 00:02:06.159
widely accepted. Instead, the headlines pivoted almost immediately to Andrew

36
00:02:06.200 --> 00:02:09.479
and the latest Epstein revelations. From the King's perspective, what

37
00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:12.400
should have been a moment of gravitas and reflection was eclipsed.

38
00:02:13.319 --> 00:02:16.319
Another source said Charles, he's a stark contrast between his

39
00:02:16.400 --> 00:02:19.800
life's work and Andrew's recurring controversies. He views himself as

40
00:02:20.039 --> 00:02:24.199
focused on stewardship, legacy, and long term Andrew, in his view,

41
00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:28.879
remains trapped in reputational crises of his own making. In

42
00:02:28.919 --> 00:02:31.879
his sub stack Royal Insighted, Deep Crown Rights. What should

43
00:02:31.919 --> 00:02:35.439
alarm us most is the characterization of full cooperation with

44
00:02:35.520 --> 00:02:39.120
law enforcement as some sort of hardened stance, a tipping

45
00:02:39.159 --> 00:02:43.000
point reached only because Andrew's scandal hijacked a film premiere,

46
00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:47.000
if it requires a documentary being overshadowed to prompt basic

47
00:02:47.039 --> 00:02:51.879
institutional responsibility. If this represents the outer limit of royal decisiveness,

48
00:02:52.159 --> 00:02:55.039
then we are not witnessing firm leadership. We are witnessing

49
00:02:55.080 --> 00:02:59.319
a man fundamentally unsuited to the ruthlessness the monarchy occasionally

50
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:04.680
demands for its own survival. For Boomberg, Andrew, Hastings writes

51
00:03:04.879 --> 00:03:08.439
and Epstein's show trial for Andrew is a bad idea.

52
00:03:08.560 --> 00:03:12.000
According to Hastings, there is a better than even money

53
00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:15.680
chance that Andrew mount Batten Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, Duke

54
00:03:15.719 --> 00:03:18.639
of York Knight of the Garta, will soon be obliged

55
00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:22.879
to fly to Washington and testify before a Congressional committee

56
00:03:22.879 --> 00:03:26.479
about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. An appearance on Capitol

57
00:03:26.599 --> 00:03:29.520
Hill will merely be show business unless there is a

58
00:03:29.560 --> 00:03:34.360
clear aim to establish criminality to continue pruriently pouring over

59
00:03:34.479 --> 00:03:37.400
disclosures of more women, more free trips, more money for

60
00:03:37.479 --> 00:03:41.439
his ex wife is for whose benefit. The story of

61
00:03:41.479 --> 00:03:45.560
Windsor and Epstein is unusual among squalid royal stories because

62
00:03:45.599 --> 00:03:49.719
it has been documented and photographed, but regal families have

63
00:03:49.800 --> 00:03:52.879
for centuries exploited the fact that rich people foolish enough

64
00:03:52.919 --> 00:03:58.240
to value association with crowns offer prince's absurdly generous prizes

65
00:03:58.680 --> 00:04:02.639
financial sexual limits for their company. Spain's royals have been

66
00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:06.240
repeatedly shamed by exposure of their participation in dirty deals,

67
00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:11.080
and the Scandinavians have their share of embarrassments. Kings and

68
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:13.680
princes seem never to have as much money or in

69
00:04:13.719 --> 00:04:17.160
some cases, as much sex, as they think themselves entitled to,

70
00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:20.480
and even in an age when few crowned heads outside

71
00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:23.519
of the Gulf States actually rule anything, sugar daddies are

72
00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:27.240
willing to indulge them, though further exposure of Windsor's activities

73
00:04:27.519 --> 00:04:30.360
will diminish the eagerness of some future royals to embrace

74
00:04:30.439 --> 00:04:33.439
sleeves as a career, if they are granted the opportunity.

75
00:04:33.560 --> 00:04:37.480
Because this is what ignorantly entitled people do. What we

76
00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:42.560
middle class types label is decadence. They call fun. In

77
00:04:42.600 --> 00:04:46.319
the Express, Chris Richess writes, when Anne Berlin was executed

78
00:04:46.360 --> 00:04:49.639
by a sword on May nineteenth, fifteen thirty six, her

79
00:04:49.639 --> 00:04:53.279
French executioner wore soft shoes to muffle his movements and

80
00:04:53.319 --> 00:04:56.279
distracted her with a sudden noise, so she turned her head,

81
00:04:56.319 --> 00:05:00.319
exposing her neck for his swift strike. Although she had

82
00:05:00.360 --> 00:05:02.519
said her prayers, she was not expecting to be killed

83
00:05:02.519 --> 00:05:05.240
at just that moment, so the blow stopped minutes of

84
00:05:05.319 --> 00:05:10.759
agonized waiting. Similarly, King Charles and Prince William swiftly executed

85
00:05:10.759 --> 00:05:13.240
their mission to oust Andrew from royal lodge with a

86
00:05:13.319 --> 00:05:17.600
deaft but unexpected strike. Maybe that was too an act

87
00:05:17.639 --> 00:05:25.360
of mercy. More palats in just a moment, Andrew should

88
00:05:25.399 --> 00:05:27.639
be removed from the line of succession and stripped of

89
00:05:27.639 --> 00:05:32.720
his remaining constitutional roles. According to a Labour MP Rachel Maskell,

90
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:36.040
MP for York Central, told the PBC that the former

91
00:05:36.120 --> 00:05:39.040
Duke of York's position in the order of succession, where

92
00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:42.800
he is currently eighth, should be reconsidered. She also called

93
00:05:42.839 --> 00:05:46.000
for his role as a Counselor of State to be revoked.

94
00:05:46.279 --> 00:05:50.079
Councilors of State can undertake certain official duties on behalf

95
00:05:50.120 --> 00:05:53.759
of the monarch in his absence. Maskell said, time and

96
00:05:53.800 --> 00:05:56.040
time again we have seen that Andrew has been conservative

97
00:05:56.040 --> 00:05:58.399
with the truth, adding that all of these titles and

98
00:05:58.399 --> 00:06:01.160
positions need to be addressed. We are just left with

99
00:06:01.600 --> 00:06:04.800
Andrew the citizen, and a citizen that is fully accountable

100
00:06:05.879 --> 00:06:08.560
royal inside a deep ground, adds the Counselor of state

101
00:06:08.680 --> 00:06:12.120
arrangement is one of those constitutional curiosities that functions perfectly

102
00:06:12.199 --> 00:06:15.240
well in the background, right up until the moment it doesn't,

103
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:18.279
at which point you are no longer dealing with a curiosity,

104
00:06:18.319 --> 00:06:22.279
but a full blown crisis. Under ordinary circumstances. The question

105
00:06:22.319 --> 00:06:25.560
of who might temporarily sign off on official documents in

106
00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:30.319
the king's absence is administrative housekeeping, but the mathematics here

107
00:06:30.399 --> 00:06:33.560
are rather uncomfortable should the realm ever find itself in

108
00:06:33.959 --> 00:06:36.920
circumstances grave enough to require a region, and we are

109
00:06:36.959 --> 00:06:40.759
speaking of scenario as one genuinely hopes never materialize. The

110
00:06:40.800 --> 00:06:43.959
current line of succession places us in the extraordinary position

111
00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:46.920
of potentially looking to either the Duke of Sussex or

112
00:06:46.959 --> 00:06:50.480
the former Duke of York for constitutional cover. One is

113
00:06:50.519 --> 00:06:53.959
conducting a one man grievance tour from a California media compound,

114
00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:56.720
and the other is as the MP for York Central,

115
00:06:56.800 --> 00:06:59.639
so diplomatically put it, a man who has been rather

116
00:06:59.720 --> 00:07:04.959
concerservative with the truth the Institution deserves better contingency planning

117
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:08.040
than that. Miss Maskell is not wrong in her instincts,

118
00:07:08.240 --> 00:07:11.360
even if Parliament has thus far declined to provide the mechanism.

119
00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:14.399
The Council of State roster was quietly expanded in twenty

120
00:07:14.439 --> 00:07:17.360
twenty two to add the Princess Royal and the Earl

121
00:07:17.399 --> 00:07:21.279
of Wessex now Edinburgh, precisely because sensible people in and

122
00:07:21.319 --> 00:07:24.199
around the Palace understood that the existing arrangement was untenable.

123
00:07:24.839 --> 00:07:28.480
That was institutional pragmatism doing quietly what the Parliament would

124
00:07:28.519 --> 00:07:31.839
not do loudly, removing Andrew from the succession entirely as

125
00:07:31.879 --> 00:07:35.240
a heavier constitutional lift. But the case for stripping his

126
00:07:35.319 --> 00:07:38.959
councilor of State status is frankly straightforward. These are not

127
00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:41.720
ceremonial baubles. They are instruments of the Crown, and the

128
00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:44.759
Crown's credibility is not well served by association with a

129
00:07:44.759 --> 00:07:49.800
man whose conduct remains to borrow. The charitable phrasing unresolved.

130
00:07:50.439 --> 00:07:53.879
The Palace has managed Andrew through managed distance. What is

131
00:07:53.920 --> 00:07:58.360
now required is managed removal. In the Daily Mail, A. N.

132
00:07:58.399 --> 00:08:02.360
Wilson writes the monarchy engraved jeopardy. The revelations about Andrew,

133
00:08:02.360 --> 00:08:04.800
Fergie and Epstein are among the most devastating to happen

134
00:08:04.839 --> 00:08:07.519
to the royal family, and it's about to get worse.

135
00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:10.839
We will probably felt we had reached rock bottom looking

136
00:08:10.839 --> 00:08:13.800
at that photograph of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor on all fours

137
00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:17.160
hovering over some unfortunate young person on the floor. Whether

138
00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:19.240
it is in Glene Maxwell's house in London, or in

139
00:08:19.279 --> 00:08:22.319
Jeffrey Epstein's New York home, or even in Buckingham Palace

140
00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:24.959
to which the former Prince invited the unsaved repair, it

141
00:08:24.959 --> 00:08:28.839
does not really matter wherever it took place. The picture

142
00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:31.560
contained in the latest tranch of Epstein files has brought

143
00:08:31.639 --> 00:08:34.559
us to a new low, and that famous phrase of

144
00:08:34.639 --> 00:08:38.639
Victorian journalist Walter Bagerhart and the British monarchy, we must

145
00:08:38.679 --> 00:08:41.679
not let daylight in upon the magic. We have never

146
00:08:41.720 --> 00:08:45.960
sounded more relevant or ominous. For this is not merely daylight.

147
00:08:46.039 --> 00:08:49.000
It is the blind and glaring arc light of publicity,

148
00:08:49.159 --> 00:08:52.279
the light of FBI investigators, accompanied by the demand of

149
00:08:52.279 --> 00:08:55.759
the US Congress for answers from our royal family. This

150
00:08:55.879 --> 00:08:57.960
is the light of attention, such as the royals would

151
00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:02.320
never have dreamed in their worst nightmares. Understandably enough, there

152
00:09:02.360 --> 00:09:05.399
are renewed calls for King Charles the Third to do something.

153
00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:08.080
But what can he do? He has already stripped his

154
00:09:08.120 --> 00:09:10.039
brother of all his titles, booted him out of his

155
00:09:10.120 --> 00:09:13.960
grace and favor, mansion, Royal Lodge and Windsor, and done

156
00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:16.799
more or less everything humanly possible to distance himself and

157
00:09:16.840 --> 00:09:19.039
the rest of his family and the whole royal brand

158
00:09:19.080 --> 00:09:22.200
from the taint of Andrew Fergie, the pedophile Epstein and

159
00:09:22.279 --> 00:09:25.360
his Madame Maxwell. There is even talk of excluding Andrew

160
00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:28.080
from the line of succession. I am no constitutional expert,

161
00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:30.559
but I do not actually see how this could be done,

162
00:09:30.840 --> 00:09:33.440
and in any case, it would surely just be a

163
00:09:33.480 --> 00:09:36.879
gesture of politics, since unless they were the most monumental

164
00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:39.120
calamity in which the Prince of Wales and or his

165
00:09:39.240 --> 00:09:41.919
family were wiped out, there is no likelihood of Andrew

166
00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:45.840
getting anywhere near becoming the king. The revelations about Andrew,

167
00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:48.480
Fergie and Epstein are among the most devastating to happen,

168
00:09:48.799 --> 00:09:51.480
not just to the royal family but the monarchy itself.

169
00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:54.600
I believe it could be in grave jeopardy as a result.

170
00:09:55.240 --> 00:09:58.159
Let us look at the implications of this. Our monarchy

171
00:09:58.279 --> 00:10:01.240
is a fact of our constitution, but if you try

172
00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:04.279
to examine quite what it is and has been over

173
00:10:04.320 --> 00:10:07.320
the centuries, you come to realize it is something much

174
00:10:07.360 --> 00:10:11.960
more than an anachronistic byproduct of history or political convenience.

175
00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:15.519
We cherished the illusion that our royal family were different,

176
00:10:15.559 --> 00:10:17.679
that our king or Queen was a special person, someone

177
00:10:17.679 --> 00:10:20.600
we could look up to. We deliberately drew a veil

178
00:10:20.679 --> 00:10:24.360
over their faults. We journalists never reported their illnesses in

179
00:10:24.440 --> 00:10:28.559
any detail. Their love lives were simply not mentioned throughout

180
00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:31.080
the long marriage of Queen Elizabeth Second and Prince Philip,

181
00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:34.279
although gossips might occasionally murmur that the Duke was something

182
00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:36.840
of a playboy with an eye for the ladies. Barely

183
00:10:36.840 --> 00:10:40.120
a breath of scandal ever got into print. The outpouring

184
00:10:40.159 --> 00:10:42.200
of grief for Queen Elizabeth the Second was in part

185
00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:44.039
the morning of a nation who felt they could look

186
00:10:44.080 --> 00:10:47.559
to her as a figure of purity and decency, an

187
00:10:47.600 --> 00:10:50.840
emblem of what we want the monarchy to be. The

188
00:10:50.960 --> 00:10:53.320
end of Charles's marriage to Diana did great damage to

189
00:10:53.360 --> 00:10:55.960
the idea of royalty as magic. It has taken decades

190
00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:58.759
for Charles and Camilla to repair it. Now they are

191
00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:02.559
older and more frail. The solidity of their relationship has

192
00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:04.679
made them very popular in the nation as a whole,

193
00:11:05.159 --> 00:11:08.639
and only the most churlish would deny them their happiness together.

194
00:11:09.480 --> 00:11:13.000
But Fergie and Andrew's greedy, coarse way of life, mercilessly

195
00:11:13.080 --> 00:11:17.320
exposed by the Epstein scandal, has done untold damage once again,

196
00:11:17.559 --> 00:11:20.360
and this time it could be mortal. Not because of

197
00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:23.759
any one particular example of their greed or corruption, but

198
00:11:23.799 --> 00:11:27.639
because the whole story reveals their sense of entitlement. King Charles,

199
00:11:27.639 --> 00:11:30.440
despite having cancer, is doing his utmost to keep the

200
00:11:30.440 --> 00:11:33.480
show on the road. The seriousness with which he prepared

201
00:11:33.519 --> 00:11:35.799
for his coronation was a sign of how much he

202
00:11:35.840 --> 00:11:38.919
wants us all to believe in the magic still, for

203
00:11:39.320 --> 00:11:43.360
he knows that the monarchy's survival depends on it. And

204
00:11:43.399 --> 00:11:45.559
there you have it. If you like to email us
