Needs work Mike
I’m giving this 5 stars for the great guests and how earnest Mike is. But here’s the straight dope: Mike needs to EDIT himself. How can you be friends with Ira and not learn from his professionalism?
Sunshine and Kittens
Listening to Mike’s podcast is just sunshine and kittens on a rainy day. Filled with empathy, intelligence and comedy- chocolate chips cookies for the soul. Kindness emanates, comedy saves- and learning more about Mike and friends is always a gift.
In the Room
One of the consistently best interview podcasts. Weather long time friend or new acquaintance, every guest, every conversation is engaging, entertaining, and authentic. I can’t help but feel I’m in a coffee shop or local pub sitting right next to them soaking in the banter as an invited friend. If you thought creating a podcast was a risk, Mike, I’m glad you took it.
Sleepwalk with me
I love Mike’s meandering way of telling a joke. In a recent episode he summed it up as him knowing where the joke is heading but keeping the audience in the dark until his reveal. This podcast is another great reassurance in the equality of the sheer horror of being alive and the comic absurdity of everything that happens next.
A favorite
Warm , smart , & funny
Wonderful
Always funny, interesting, illuminating. I love this podcast even when it is a guest whose work I don’t know. Birbiglia is warm, funny.
Always a pleasure
This podcast is so entertaining plus it’s just so refreshing to listen to kind, caring people. I’m especially grateful to him for turning me on to Hannah Gadsby. Just watched Nanette and went from laughing the hardest I have in months, too being absolutely blown away. Thanks for curation this art form called comedy.
Unexpected and endearing
I am definitely a fan of Mike’s stand-up, but I might like his podcast personality even more… Mike is a surprisingly talented podcast host (like, this guy should be hosting his own late night talk show kind of talent). His chats with other comedians are funny and interesting—and I especially love hearing stories about Mike’s “mean” humor. It’s so unexpected and endearing! Great content, plenty of laughs, and well produced.
73. Michael J. Fox Knocks Podcast Out of Park
At times, the Internet connection on MJF's end cuts out and then there's the effort of speaking through Parkinson's but there's a PDF transcript on birbigs.com and these small preps are well-worth your time. (aired 2022-06)
Cry-laughing out loud
I made the mistake of listening to the Bill Hader episode while in public. I was laughing and crying at the same time so hard I almost couldn’t breathe with everyone staring. Mike and Hader are hilarious separately and together, they almost got me arrested or at least on some kind of watch list, hopefully just a local one. Thank you Mike for always making me laugh, even during times when I am so low and the world seems dark.
“Inspiring…insightful…intelligent” -me
This podcast is a gift to all of us non-performers and non-funny people who stare through the display glass at a perfectly formed comedy sausage and wonder, “but how was it made?” The Gary Gulman episode is my favorite because it provides a tangible analysis of the anatomy of jokes (or at least a couple types of jokes). I am eagerly awaiting the day when Joe Birbiglia comes on as a guest (🤞).
So great!
Wish I would have found this podcast sooner. Had my Birbiglia flame rekindled when he recently covered for Jimmy Kimmel when Kimmel had Covid...and that led me to this pod. So good!
Mike is the best!
Loving the podcast!
Trigger warning
This is a 5 star podcast except for Alex Eldeman’s text message story. Love you, Mike :)
5 Star, but...
I'd like to give this 5 stars across the board but Alex Edelman tells a story this week about accidentally seeing the texts of a woman he is on a date with and she calls him a (disparaging slur) so for this episode alone I would be forced to give... SIX stars! What a story! Seriously though, this is both great to get to know your favorite comedic artists and to get a little "inside baseball", as they say.
So Good
Every episode is so good!! I will say, the Stephen Colbert episode is still my least favorite to this day. Every other episode is so fantastic. Malcolm gladwell and hasan Minhaj are tied for first.
Brilliant
I love this show. So much depth, comedy and just good lovely listening. We’re all working it out. Thanks Mike.
Question?
Would you ever have Jake Johnson on?
Quirky comedians and the creative process
Update: watched Ronny Chieng’s NEW special and went back and listened to episode 13 again. Still an episode that makes me giggle a lot and fun to see which bits made it into his special. Also saw Birbigs in Denver in December- and I’m a little sad the “death pledge” joke didn’t make the cut. I’m not a comedian, but I love to hear them talk shop. This has some of the vibe of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee- but goes deeper. I’ve learned about comedians I might not have come across otherwise. Ronny Chieng’s episode was one of my favorites- and it lead me to his Netflix special which was a pandemic viewing highlight. The best shows are when they go deep into the material and we get great discussions and tips around the craft. The 2nd Ira Glass episode was especially interesting. I was really bummed last June that Birbigs’ show was postponed, but now I can’t wait to see how much it has developed when we CAN go. Highly recommend for people interested in creative processes and quirky, hilarious conversations.
Laughing out loud in my car
I love listening to this on my rides in to work. Any anxiety I have about what’s ahead instantly is put at ease with all the humor and light-hearted Ed’s of Mike and whatever guest he has on. Definitely one of the best comedy podcasts around!
Has to Be Said
It’s a good show. I enjoy it. I do not, under any circumstances, understand why they have to number the episodes the way they do. I listen to nothing but podcasts and have never written a review for one until now in hopes that someone in charge of this show will see this and realize how confusing and idiotic it is to give an episode TWO episode numbers. Just give it the original number instead of trying to fool listeners into thinking your reruns are new episodes. “This is episode 70. And also 54.” IT MAKES NO SENSE. Please stop.
Love this Podcast
Comics make it look easy… the good ones anyway. Mike Birbigs gives you an insider’s look at the creative process. He “riffs” with brilliant guests while the listener gets to be a fly on the wall. It’s an interesting and unique premise and I love this insider’s view of comedy and how it comes to be… It’s thoughtful, smart, creative and most of all funny! If you love comedy and are interested in the creative process, you have to listen!
Thanks, Mook!
I told my enemy about this podcast and they loved it! Now we’re getting married! Thanks, Mook Bongbooglio!
Best best best
I listen every week and each episode is so valuable. It’s also nice to have a comedy podcast that’s gentle listening, love the transition music and feeling like I’m eavesdropping on a conversation about writing/editing.
