Cult Hackers w/ Stephen & Celine Mather
Celine and Stephen Mather are a father-and-daught…
Celine and Stephen Mather are a father-and-daughter podcast team. Stephen is now an organizational psychologist but was raised in a high-control group, leaving when he was around thirty years old, around the time when Celine was born. He has an interest in how cults operate and how people establish their sense of self after they leave, his dissertation for his Masters in Organizational Psychology explored this question. Celine is a media graduate and for obvious reasons has an interest in cults, having a particular perspective on them, as she grew up in a home where her parents worked to make a life outside the group.
In this open and revealing Father and Daughter conversation Stephen and Celine open up to Rachel about how their family's involvement with the Jehovah's Witnesses affected their respective childhoods for better or worse. Throughout the discussion, Rachel and Stephen offer their professional analysis of the family dynamics involved with high-control religious groups, while Celine shares her unique perspective from being raised with tertiary involvement with the Church.
Before You Go: Rachel explains how raising children can often be the catalyst for members of high-control religions to finally recognize the harmful ideologies and ultimately leave the group.
