#6 What Are You Really Chasing?
Roy Coughlan and Catherine Llewellyn dig into a deceptively simple question: what are you really chasing? Roy shares how he once chased conventional success, the bigger house, the better car, the properties, until he was completely wiped out through no fault of his own and lost it all. That experience shifted what he chases today: happiness, health, and success measured not by the destination but by enjoying the present journey, choosing businesses that benefit the world, and building something better for his kids. Catherine reflects on two areas where the question has shown up strongest in her own life: relationships, where she often chased connection without being conscious of whether what she actually wanted was love or something else entirely, and personal development, where even in the spiritual world she caught herself chasing the next level of enlightenment, only to realize that presence and connection aren't things you chase, they're things you're open to receiving. A short, sweet episode on catching yourself mid-chase and asking what you're actually after.

#6 What are you really chasing
Welcome to Different Points. I'm delighted to be back here again with my wonderful co-host Roy Colan. So today we're going to talk about what are you really chasing? I love that question because there's always what we think we're chasing but what are we really chasing? So I'm going to immediately ask you Roy, what's your take on this question? I'll have a take that's probably through my own journey.
So I think a lot of people, they chase success and success is kind of the better car, the bigger house, you know, the more holidays and everything. So you're chasing that. I got wiped out.
So through no fault of my own, got totally wiped out, took all my houses, my properties and everything. And then I realized that that's not the right way to be. It's like living in the present.
So what am I chasing? I'm chasing happiness. I'm chasing everything I do, I enjoy. Every business I do is something that's going to benefit the world.
Something that I want to ensure that my kids have a better world and the things I'm doing and I'm chasing daily happiness as well. So, you know, we've talked about in a previous episode, kind of like mindfulness and things like that, just being totally present. It's the same thing.
I'm chasing it because, you know, like health, prior to recording, we just talked about things we're doing for our own health and they're things that I'm enjoying. So I'm chasing health, happiness and success, but in a way that's not for the destination. It's for the present time and enjoying the journey as I go along.
Wow. Well, I think you've answered the question. We can stop the episode right there.
I've got a personal one on this, which is not so much about business. It's more about kind of two areas, one being relationships and the other one being personal development. So in my life, I've had times when I was, let's say, chasing to try and get a great relationship with somebody, but I didn't really know what it was I thought that was going to give me.
You know, was I after love and connection or was I after sex? You know, what was the actual thing I really needed and wanted at that point, you know, my adolescence or twenties or whenever it was. And something I found was that when I, when I was chasing after something without really being conscious of what it was I really, really wanted, it never worked because even if I got the thing I thought I wanted, it didn't give me what I needed. So I'd end up in a relationship with somebody where it was great to begin with, but then it didn't work because I wasn't clear what I really wanted to need it.
And probably they weren't either. Plus we were probably too young and stupid to even talk about it properly. So that thing about what are we really chasing really shows up for me in relationships.
But another thing it shows, because I've been in the sort of personal development spirituality world for decades, although you might think that's really non-hierarchical, you can find yourself, and I found myself in that, chasing the next level of enlightenment, you know, or the next level of being an evolved person or whatever. And the minute you're chasing something like that, you've lost the point, you know, because the point is to be in the moment, as you're saying Roy, and to be present with who you are and, you know, connected to universal love and everything else. But all of that is not a thing to chase.
It's a thing that exists and that you can be open to and receive or not, you know, so that I've had some real strong lessons with that. But I've found myself chasing something and thinking, what the hell are you doing? No, beautiful. Love it.
Love it. So I think nice and sweet and short for this episode. And we'll see for another one tomorrow.
Make sure you give us thumbs up, five star rating, share with your friends, because it really helps. Fantastic.
