#21 The Gift of Self-Compassion

In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask a simple but surprisingly hard question: can you be kinder to yourself? Catherine recalls the first time someone told her to take better care of herself — and how it landed as criticism rather than care, a reflex she traces back to a lifelong identity of resilience and toughness that left little room for treating herself as someone who also needs love and vulnerability. She didn't start learning true self-compassion until her 30s, and makes the case that it's a prerequisite for genuinely caring for others — you can't give what you're not giving yourself. Roy shares his own approach of consistently choosing self-appreciation over self-criticism, modeling that for his children rather than talking about it, and draws a comparison to the well-known plant experiment on how words and energy — positive or negative — shape what they're directed at. A short, genuine reminder to talk to yourself the way you'd talk to something you actually want to thrive.

#21 The gift of self-compassion
(0:02 - 3:12)
Welcome to episode number 21 of Diff'rent Points. I'm joined with my co-host Catherine Llewellyn and I'm Roy Collin and today is the question is gifts of self-compassion but can you be kinder to yourself? What comes to mind Catherine? The first time someone said to me you should take better care of yourself, you should be kinder to yourself, it felt like I was being told off. It felt like I was being told off for, you know, that I was doing something wrong.

A bit like if you've got a car, you know, you're supposed to look after it properly and if you don't, you're falling down in some way. So that was my first and I think it was because I had developed a personality of being very, very resilient, you know, I'm tough, I can keep going, I can take on whatever life throws me which is great but the downside of that is then perhaps not being very compassionate towards myself, not remembering that I am vulnerable, I do need care, I do need love and actually I can give that to myself and it wasn't till my 30s I think that I really started to learn how to do that because before that I'd always been sort of, you know, I can keep going, probably came from my Scottish heritage, you know. So I think this is a big one, I think it's very important because until we are compassionate to ourselves and kind to ourselves, it's very difficult for us to be truly kind to other people because if we're running ourselves ragged, we can't really be sensitive to other people and really give them what they need and want.

So I do think this is a really, really important one. For me, I've seen going to different events where there's people saying I am enough and things like that and I've realised over the years how much people have self-negativity towards themselves and they're just berating themselves, they're just belittling themselves in front of others and I've never done that, I've always kind of looked on the positive. It's like I appreciate who I am, I love who I am, I always try to aspire to be a better version of myself which in turn my children see me and that's the best example instead of talking which a lot of people do and also I don't have the ego because a lot of people they have the ego and that's why they think it's self-love but it's not, that's more promotion, I'm not like that, you know.

So I think you should love yourself and if you don't ask yourself why and start practising to love yourself and it's okay to love yourself and love what you do and don't start, like because the power of words, like we've seen examples and this is proven, scientifically proven, you talk to two plants, you've got plants behind you, you can talk negative to one and positive to the other, the one that's negative just disintegrates but yet people do that to themselves so don't. Talk beautiful things to yourself. Thank you for saying that, Roy, I shall do that now forever.

(3:16 - 3:28)
Well, that's our different points for today. Yeah, give us a thumbs up as you know and five star rating and just share with your friends because I think this is an important one, I think everybody needs to love themselves. Until the next episode, take care.
