#16 Following What Gives You Life

In this episode of Different Points, Roy Coughlan and Catherine Llewellyn explore something deceptively simple — what actually makes you feel alive? Not the theory of life, but the feeling of it. From family and conscious dance to sober raves at sunrise, this is a warm, joyful conversation that might make you stop and ask yourself what you've been putting off that genuinely lights you up.

What You'll Learn in This Episode

  • Why Roy rings his mother every single day — and why family is at the heart of everything he does
  • How Catherine discovered conscious dance and why letting your body move without explaining yourself is one of the most liberating things you can do
  • Why so many people feel they need alcohol to dance — and what happens when you prove them wrong
  • How Roy experienced the joy of a hundred people dancing sober at A-Fest and nobody judging anyone
  • The difference between talking about life and actually living it

Key Takeaways

  • The things you do with passion aren't separate from your family — they're for them
  • Life is a force, not a theory — and you feel the difference when you stop explaining and start experiencing
  • You don't need alcohol to dance, to connect or to have fun — you just need to stop caring what anyone thinks
  • Following what gives you life isn't selfish — it makes you more present and alive for everyone around you
  • Joy is contagious — when people see you having more fun sober, it makes them question everything

#16 Following what gives you life
Welcome to Different Points, episode 16, with myself, Catherine Llewellyn, and my co-host, Roy Poland. So today, our topic is following what gives you life, which on the face of it, you think, what else would you do, right? So Roy, can I give this to you to kick off with? Well, for me, when I think about it, I think of family. I mean, we have work and we do stuff that really passionate about, and you jump out of bed when you're done it.

But why are we kind of doing a lot of this stuff? And I'm very close with my youngest child, my son, Daniel, and I love to do things with him. But I'm also, I'm a mummy's boy, and I know I'm a bit old to be a mummy's boy, but I ring my mother every day. And just being close with them gives me life.

And I want the best for them. And by kind of doing the things that I'm passionate about, and the projects I'm doing to make a better world, I know I'm making a better world for my children as well. That's so beautiful.

Yes. And there's that, what gives you life through your relationships with people you love. And there's also what gives you life in terms of what brings yourself alive on the inside.

So for example, for me, one of those is conscious dance. When I first discovered five rhythms dance, someone said to me, do you love dancing? Yes. Do you want to go to a thing where there's no drinking, there's no talking.

You're just dancing in daylight, in the day. I mean, sounds fantastic. She said, great.

It's a seven day dance camp just outside Totnes. Oh my God. And it was just so lovely because we were just letting the bodies move.

We weren't explaining ourselves the whole time. We were letting emotions flood through us. We were expressing ourselves.

We were having fun. And it gave me so much life. And I realized what it was, is that my physical body, well, it's alive, obviously, but we can allow it to be much, much more alive when we just let it move in the way that it wants to.

And we just let the energy and the emotions and the feelings just move without interfering with it, with our rational mind and our explaining and all of that stuff. Because explaining is about, is talking about life. It's not life itself.

Life itself is a force. So following what gives you life for me is about dance. It's about looking at the sky and just bursting out laughing because it's so beautiful.

Or going for a walk and just feeling the air and hearing the sheep and the cat comes running along behind me, you know, meeting people and stroking people's dogs, you know, all the stuff that is the feeling of life, not the theory of life. So that's what following what gives you life is about for me. How about you, Roy? Yeah, I mean, it's, like I said with my child, but when you mentioned about the music, I went to A-Fest, which is Mindvalley, I think.

And what they did is they would have some kind of, they might start at 10 o'clock or something, but somebody would do 8 o'clock, let's meet or have, and they'd have techno music. And it's like that. And the thing is, a lot of people think you have to have alcohol in your system to dance.

I'm the type that if I like the music, I don't need drink. And it was fantastic there that you've got, I don't know, there was a hundred plus people with totally sober, great music. And you could just see the joy on each other's face and nobody's judging someone.

You just dance, you just move your body the way you feel. Whereas kind of people's experience is usually, sometimes there's a deck and people are just looking down at people dancing and they're conscious and hence why they wait until they're drunk, because then they stop caring. And it's like, don't care about other people, care about yourself, move with the flow.

Yes, 100%. I used to get people coming up to me at nightclubs, men usually, they'd come up and say, I've been seeing you dancing. Yeah.

You're drinking water. Yeah. Is that a problem? It's vodka.

Is that a problem? Well, how can you do it? And I said, well, just try it. And I've seen all these people start drinking less because they realize, hold on, she's having more fun than I am and she's not drinking. What is going on? Yeah.

So thank you, Roy, a great topic once again. And thank you everyone watching and listening and follow what gives you life, which hopefully will include tuning back into different points for our next episode and check the show notes and do give us a thumbs up and ratings and all those lovely things. We're still quite a new show, so we particularly appreciate all your support.

Thank you. Thank you.
