Stray dogs are common in India. They can be docile, loveable companions in your area. Ask any dog lover, and they will defend their right to exist with dignity and healthy life. They feed them, take care of them and love them deeply. If we humans don't, then who will?
Yet, on the other hand, a large section of society can't stand them. They are scared and aggressive toward them. Most believe they carry diseases such as rabies, which can be transmitted to humans through bites or scratches and puts society at risk.
The Indian government and animal welfare organizations have implemented several programs to address the issue, such as sterilization, vaccination, and education campaigns to promote responsible pet ownership. However, much more must be done to control the stray dog population and ensure their welfare.
As per TOI - India, with its estimated population of 35-40 million stray dogs, accounts for the highest number of rabies cases in the world, with about 20,000 people (or around 36% of the 59,000 deaths worldwide) dying from it every year; half the cases are children below 15 years of age.
