What to do in Cleveland

What to do in Cleveland

It's Labor Day Weekend, let's hit the Cleveland Air Show, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and bounce around the flats and probably drink too much beer. And play bocce. And eat donuts.

It's Labor Day Weekend, let's hit the Cleveland Air Show, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and bounce around the flats and probably drink too much beer. And play bocce. And eat donuts.

Hey, I'm Johnny mc and travel is back this week. Let's hit up Cleveland. Here's why. It's not as hot, it's not as cold, it's just right. And this weekend, Labor Day weekend in Cleveland, it's the annual Air Show, a tradition that dates back more than half a century. Three days of aerial thrills featuring the US Air Force Thunderbirds, gravity defying aerobatics, parachuting and more. On the ground, kid friendly activities drones. That's a lot of fun and unique display aircraft. The twenty twenty one air Show will feature the USAir Thunderbirds. Each day. The six select Thunderbird demonstration piles will put their distinct red, white and blue F sixteen Falcon jet fighters through a choreographed fifty minute performance that speeds up to five hundred miles per hour and as close as three feet from each other. If you've never done an air show, do one. I was at Jones Beach one day. I didn't even know it was the air show. I just went to the beach because it was a Memorial Day, which I've since learned. That's when Jones Beach, Long Island, New York does their aerial show, and like suddenly, eight trillion planes started flying over. It was quite loud, but it was quite cool. Another time, I was in Chicago on a business trip and maybe I was walking around the city instead of working out of the hotel room, and I got busted because the US Navy decided to have an air show above me. So I'm on a conference called suddenly heard what was that? John? Nevermind. Other aircraft performing this weekend doing flyovers and demonstrations include the A ten C Thunderbolt two, the C seventeen Globe Master three, a C one thirty Hercules, an F fifteen Eagle, and an H sixty five seat Dolphin helicopter. There will also be and try to say this, I'm on my fourth take precision formation flying demonstration, nailed it by the Geico Skytypers air Show team. That's a squadron of six vintage World War two US Navy s n J two trainers, simulated bombing runs with pyro technics, and an aerial show put on by the Golden Knights, that's the US Army's elite parachute team. So Cleveland's already a good time and all we've done is going to the air show. This weekend Labor Day weekend. Now, another thing you've probably heard of that's in Cleveland and you're gonna check it out is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rest in peace, Charlie Watts. This has everything from the ridiculous, including Jim Morrison's Club Scout uniform to the sublime John Lennon's handwritten lyrics for Lucy and the Sky with Diamonds, stage costumes that once belong to Chuck Berry and Higgy Pop, handwritten lyrics by Hendricks, Janet Joplin's Porsche. The museum regularly rotates in temporary exhibits. The one you can see right now and it's closing in September, is fifty five years of halftime shows. The super Bowl is the most utev event of the year. The halftime show remains one of the rare events that people still enjoy together in real time. With the duration of approximately twelve and a half minutes, the halftime show continually outdoes itself and becomes part of our cultural history. Now, I will warn you, because this happened to me, be careful with the hours of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many years ago, I went there with my friend Dan, and I wanted to see the Cleveland Indians play baseball and he wanted to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was a Saturday in August. Then I said, why don't we go to the baseball game and then we'll walk thee whatever it is, five to seven eight blocks over to the Hall of Fame and then we'll do that. And he said okay. So we saw the baseball game and then we walked over to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on a Saturday in the summer, and it was like five pm and they were like closed, And I'm like, is Saturday night not a good night for a rock and roll What night are you open late? And they said Wednesday. Now that story is from the very late twentieth century. It's possible there are hours have changed, so look it up before you head out there. But boy, that kind of sucked. Other things we could check out in Cleveland The Cleveland Museum of Art sixty one thousand objects and spans six thousand years of achievement in the arts. How about the West Side Market. If you listen every week, you know how much I enjoy markets. This one is Cleveland's public oldest market, home to one hundred vendors offer meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, dairy flowers, ready to eat foods, spices and nuts. In two thousand and eight, it was designated one of the ten Great Public Places in America. That's pretty cool. Some of the places you could eat at the west Side Market Sebastian's Daily, Frank's Two with famous Bratwarst sandwiches. You might also see one of these driving arounds town selling out of the bratmobile. Good name. The west Side Market Cafe features a selection of domestic and craft beers. You know who might pop in there. How about the Pea Nuts Gallery, Pee Hypha Nut Gallery if you like nuts. Plenty of nuts there. Perokee Place, Ohio City Pasta, Maple Valley, Sugar Bush if you want to get some maple syrup. The Juice Garden, the Pizza Bego, Lady Campbell's Popcorn Shop, Kate's Fish, Steve's Gyros, Johnny hot Dogs. I mean, come on west Side Markets where it's at a great thing about Cleveland is it's all kind of compact. You can pretty much walk everywhere if you want to explore the Ohio city area of Cleveland. How about the Market Garden Brewery. What beer should you get there? The Cleveland af Yeah, why not? How about Mitchell's ice Cream Their signature flavor Porter Chocolate Chunk, made in collaboration with Great Lakes Brewing Company. I'm in on that. I almost always mentioned an aquarium. The Greater Cleveland Aquarium has a one hundred and seventy five foot underwater tunnel. You can watch sharks glide right overhead, check out a colorful tropical reef, Snap a selfie with a smiling stingray, and breathe the c tube. That's the tunnel that I told you about. Let's walk around the Flats area a little bit. The Flats is where you'll find like the bars and the hangout areas. I've had one or two fine nights there, and you'll hear the beer aficionado coming out in me. In this episode, the Collision Bend Brewering Company named America's best brewpub in USA today. That's pretty good. Collision Bend mixes so cool street food and craft beer. Grab a seat on the patio and enjoy a riverside rest. Collision's got a wood burning pizza oven. Done three bars, outdoor seating done and amazing river views and a brews room that accommodates private parties. But this other place, I've not been to this, but this sounds pretty cool. Backyard Bocchi. Cleveland's renovated Flats East Bank is home to this riverside botchi bar and bistro garage. Doors open up to soak the sun in and then you can sit outside, have some pizzas and pasta, drink it up, and play bacchi. So many years ago, I found myself in Cleveland and we spent two three days going a little hard at the breweries that I told you about in the Flats area, and then I had no more money. We were supposed to go home on a Sunday morning, and this was Saturday night, at like six or seven o'clock, the same day that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was closed, and I said to my friend, why don't we just drive home now? And He's like, now we're in Cleveland, let's hang out. And I'm like, all right, we're going to the cheapest place I can possibly find. Well, I found Have a Nice Day. Have a Nice Day was an eighties themed bar, and they were serving bottled beer for dollar until ten o'clock. So we enjoyed one dollar bottled beer. And around nine thirty I got up and got around. We didn't need, and I told my friend get up and get another round. We didn't need. And then a third friend got up and got around. We didn't need. And then I got up and got around. We didn't need, and so on and so on. I have a picture of me with a beer and seven more beers in queue because I'm cheap, so I had seven one dollars beer as ready. Oh and we finished them all. Which is a prequel to the story. So we stumble out of have an ice day around one am, and we're hungry and everything's kind of closed, and we find a place called Dix and we go in and we order more beer. Of course, when we get some food, I don't remember what we ate, and I just remember the waitress was a total total be word C word, not nice at all. And I'm sitting there and I'm getting mad. I'm like, what is this place? What is this? What is going on? She's nasty? She comes back, she's nasty, She brings back a bucket of beer, takes the beer out. Now it's a bucket full of ice and no joke dumps it on my friend's head and I'm like, what is go? Why? Wow? And then it hits me. The place is called Dix. It's a theme bar. It's called Dick's Last Resort. Look it up and take an unsuspecting friend there and laugh it up while you go. Some other places we could check out in Cleveland. Presty's Bakery and Cafe. In nineteen oh three, Rose and Charles Presty Senior open the bakery, specializing in fresh bread. They still make bread, doughnuts, cookies, cakes, and pastries, all made by hand, but I might have to head over to brew nuts. Beer plus donuts equals perfect is the description. I agree. It's in the Gordon Square Arts district where they make the perfect pairing of deconan donuts and tasty beers. Nationally recognized and worth every bite is the description. Belly up and stay a while sounds a lot of fun. So Cleveland. It's not exactly Seattle. It's not exactly New York City. It's not exactly Montreal. It's a little smaller. There's not that much to do. I didn't mention baseball. I don't want to go baseball. If the Cleveland Browns are in town, maybe you should do that. But if I had one day, I'm gonna make it this weekend air show. Then bounce over to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If it's open brewery, beer and donuts, don't. Let's wrap up the night at Backyard Bocci and just people watch and go wow, I have a lot of beer.
