79. Green Lakes State Park and Central New York
Just a few hours from New York, Philly, Toronto, Montreal and a little longer from Boston, there is plenty to do in Central New York if you like hiking and lakes.
This week is more of a "to-do list" for me as real life got in the way of me road-tripping.

The Shark Deck. Johnny mcann travel
is back this week. I'm a little
2
00:00:10.039 --> 00:00:13.119
grounded. I've had a state close
to home to take care of a sick
3
00:00:13.279 --> 00:00:18.359
family member, but I'm planning on
heading up to the Finger Lakes area of
4
00:00:18.399 --> 00:00:21.440
New York State. Ten miles east
of Syracuse, New York, you'll find
5
00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:25.239
a Green Lakes State Park. There
are two lakes, the Green Lake and
6
00:00:25.320 --> 00:00:29.320
the Round Lake. They are merrow
mick tick. What does that mean.
7
00:00:29.359 --> 00:00:34.000
It means they're layers of water don't
mix. The waters are unusually clear,
8
00:00:34.200 --> 00:00:38.320
and they have that bluish green look
that's typically associated with the Caribbean. Yet
9
00:00:38.479 --> 00:00:42.000
here they are in upstate New York. The nearly two thousand acre park is
10
00:00:42.039 --> 00:00:47.200
surrounded around two stunning lakes formed during
the Last Ice Age nearly fifteen thousand years
11
00:00:47.200 --> 00:00:51.079
ago. The two lakes, more
essentially giant plunge pools waterfalls flowing off the
12
00:00:51.079 --> 00:00:54.479
receding edge of the glaciers scooped out
about five hundred feet of rock to form
13
00:00:54.560 --> 00:00:58.479
these deep, steep sided lakes that
are incongruous with the present landscape. Green

deep, Round Lake one eighty apparently minerals

the groundwater. During late May to early
16
00:01:04.760 --> 00:01:10.439
June, the lakes undergo an annual
whiting event, where the calcium carbonate precipitates
17
00:01:10.439 --> 00:01:15.280
out of the water and settles to
form reeflike structures. Surrounding the lake slopes
18
00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:18.680
as high as one hundred and fifty
feet old growth forests, and there are
19
00:01:18.719 --> 00:01:22.760
also about thirteen miles of hiking trails. Everything about this is perfect for me.
20
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:26.879
Green Lake State Park is open from
eleven to seventh through September fourth.
21
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:29.760
Ten bucks to park, not bad
