47. Purgatory Chasm and the Beaches of New England

Johnny Mack and travel is back. Last week I took a look at the beaches of New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey. This week from a TRIPLEA dot com, let's explore the best beaches in New England from Cape cod to Connecticut. All right, let's start from my home city, New York City, and we'll start heading northeast, and we find ourselves in Madison, Connecticut and Hamon Asset Beach State Park. Fancy a long stretch of beach with gentle surf, scenic spots and plenty of activities for the kids. You'll find it at Hamonesset Beach State Park. Yeah. The South shore of Connecticut different than the Long Island beaches because you're not out out on the ocean. You're out on Long Island Sound. The waves are gentle and calm. So if you want the little kids to be able to go on the water and not worry about it, good spot. More than five hundred campsites dot the parks one thousand acres. Parking is free for Connecticut residents. You non residents fifteen bucks on weekdays, twenty two bucks on weekends and holidays. It is quite quite pretty. Let's keep going up to Rhode Island. How about Narragansett Town Beach. There you'll find waves. Yes, we're out past Long Island. Now you'll find a mile long beach, spotless and sandy. Plus, you're in the middle of a thriving beach town. Across the street from the beach, you'll find tons of eateries, classic seafood crapes, shopping and ice cream spots. Wall that rings the beach is a popular spot to sit and indulge in some serious people watching, especially with an ice cream cone or gelato in your hand. I like that suggestion. Triple A. Also in Rhode Island goose Wing Beach Preserve. It takes a little walk in and get there, but you will be rewarded with fewer crowds than the other Rhode Island beaches, even in the beak of summer. It's owned by the Nature Conservancy. The town manages the beach in the summer months, rustic portable toilets, a couple of food vendors. Make sure you check out Grays ice Cream, famous homemade ice cream open three hundred and sixty five days a year, because ice cream is good every day. Check out the flavors, You're ready, Black raspberry, blueberry, butter, crunch with a K, butter, canned butter, scotch, cherry, vanilla, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, walnut, coconut, coffee, coffee chip, cookie dough, frozen pudding, ginger, Yeah, grape nut, lemon, maple, walnut, mint, chip, mocha chip, orange, pineapple, oreo, peach, peanut, butter, peppermint, pistachio, rum, raisin, strawberry, strawberry, cheesecake, vanilla. Hopefully you like one of those, man, If not, get a yogurt, black raspberry, chocolate, coffee, maple, walnut, rum, raisin, strawberry, or vanilla. That's Gray's ice cream. Scarborough State Beach, Triple A writes, Poor Scarborough. For years, this beautiful, tidy beach has been trying to shed its past images. The Ocean states muscled Beach, a place where boombox is jammed, hair sprays heased, hairdos ruled, and gold changed simmered in the sun. Yeah, I want no part of that. No thanks. Yes, you'll still find avid sun warshippers and more than a fair amount of college students. But it's also a place where family and friends gathered to enjoy these sandy white swatch of coastline and a gentle rolling surf. There you can find Brickley's ice cream. Should we do a flavor comparison? I think we should, but they didn't put their flavors on their website. So between gold chains and I don't know what flavor to get, I'm not going there. I'm going to goose Wing. Second Beach. It's officially known as a Statuist Beach, but Rhode Islanders know it as a second beach. Easton's Beach and Newport is known as First Beach, and a beach near third Beach Harbor is called come with Me Third Beach. You got it? Like Scarborough. This is another one of those quintessential ocean state beaches, the one everybody's family went to when they were little. Concession stands, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, grills. It's perched between two natural wonders, the Satuist Point National Wildlife Refuge at one end. There's some trails there. You could check out the snowy owls and purgatory chasm oh No, a natural ravine sliced away by sea water that sounds like a good time. Purgatory Chasm a unique natural landmark offering exciting adventure follow trails a rockborn mason, such as the corn Crib, the Coffin, and Love Leap. This sounds terrifying. According to legend, an Algonquin Indian woman found herself in a tight spot shortly after she killed a white colonial settler. As she walked away from the scene of the crime, she encountered another settler who asked her for company on a short walk. Naturally, having just murdered one of his people, she was apprehensive. She tried to run away. He lunched and grabbed her by the wrist. When she called out to the Native American god Hobomoko to save her, the second settler revealed himself as none other than Hobomoko. In the flesh, he morphed into a devil like guys, grabbed his captive by the waist, and flew to purgatory chasm. Colinists said that the devil's action on that day formed the chasm. The deep depressions were allegedly the places he stomped and threw his victim. The large deep cuts in the rocks were the result of a swinging tomahawk. Geologists on the other hand, think that a mile high glacier let loose some water that was dammed up fourteen thousand years ago, leaving the walls in tech but carving out the seventy foot deep chasm. All the way out on the Cape to Provincetown. Since nineteen sixty one, when JFK signed legislation creating the Cape Cod National Seashore, good call, JFK, nearly forty miles of pristine shoreline have been protected from development. You'll find one of its six beaches, Race Point Beach, at the very tip of the Cape's arm. In Provincetown. Oftentimes you'll see whales and a seal or two off in the distance. However, no concessions. Bring your own food, man. I think Provincetown deserves its own episode. So let's keep going north Bennington, Vermont. If you're looking for saltwater and rollicking waves, Vermont's not the place for you. If you're looking for a quaint lake maintained by volunteers with a strong sense of community. Head over to Lake Paran. You'll find a pretty lake with a lake house and a snack bar featuring famous one dollar grilled cheese sandwiches. You can swim and rent canoes, play horseshoes, gripe your own stuff on charcoal grills. Lakes open every day beginning mid June three fifty. Or head on up all the way to Maine to Acadian National Park, another place that deserves its own episode. But at Acadia, one of the things you can do plunge into the refreshing Atlantic amid Cragley Granite Peaks, hundreds of miles of rugged hiking trails, car free carriage roads, and nearly fifty thousand acres of protected forest in Akadian National Park thirty dollars per car, So that's not bad. You bring the family Divide by X, Yeah, not bad. You gain entrance to the park. You can bike ride and traverse the day Away and Mother Nature's Playground. You can climb the near vertical Beehive trail in the morning five hundred feet's got a great view of sand Beach, and have a picnic lunch on the shores in the afternoon, but be four warned. The water up there fifty five degrees even in the summer. I'll be on the sand next week. We'll visit Long Beach Island. Then it's going to be another forty eight hours in LA And then I went to Catalina Island, which, oh my goodness, if you knew me in real life, I can't stop talking about Catalina.
