Saints of Poland

What happens when you pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in St. Faustina’s backyard?

This week, Father Dave shares powerful moments from his recent pilgrimage to Poland—visiting sacred sites tied to St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Faustina, and St. John Paul II. From celebrating Mass at Kolbe’s friary to walking through Auschwitz and Birkenau, it’s a glimpse of God’s mercy amid some of history’s darkest places.

While Father Dave walked in the footsteps of saints, Deacon Bob found hopeful witness in the desert. He returns from the Life Teen Catholic Youth Ministry Convention in Arizona, where he gave a talk on “Radiant Hope” and reconnected with longtime friends in ministry. Together, the hosts reflect on the quiet, often unseen ways God raises up saints in every generation—even in the most unexpected places.

And yes, this episode still includes classic They That Hope moments: breakfast with Father Dave’s brother Tom, a temporarily misplaced child on the New York subway, and a burning question: Why does the French Open have two names?

Highlighted Sections

(00:00) Breakfast with Tom, Arizona Adventures, and Youth Ministry in the Desert
Deacon Bob recounts his recent trip to Arizona for the Life Teen Catholic Youth Ministry Convention where he reconnected with ministry leaders and gave a keynote on “Radiant Hope.” He also shares a surprise breakfast meet-up with Father Dave’s brother, Tom (a loyal listener), some humorous travel woes, and the joy of being surrounded by those serving the Church’s youth.

(04:08) Sports Recap: NBA, NHL, Tennis, and... Golf?
From unexpected NBA playoff upsets to a grueling five-set French Open final, Father Dave and Deacon Bob weigh in on recent sports headlines. They touch on the drama of playoff hockey, marvel at JJ Spaun’s 62-foot putt, and clear up (sort of) why the French Open is also called Roland-Garros.

(09:01) Audiobook Adventures
Deacon Bob announces that his book Sharing the Gospel with Our Lives is getting the audiobook treatment—and he’s narrating it himself. He shares the process (including a mysterious home studio in Columbus), while Father Dave recalls the heartbreak of being cut off with just 15 minutes left in a Navy SEAL memoir due to subscription limits.

(16:29) Pilgrimage to Poland: Kolbe, Faustina & Divine Mercy in Dark Places
Father Dave reflects on the deeply moving pilgrimage he led across Poland. Highlights include Mass at St. Maximilian Kolbe’s friary visiting the birthplace of St. Faustina, and praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet in St. Faustina’s backyard with her niece. He shares how the lives of these saints—and the sobering visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau—revealed the light of God even in history’s darkest moments.

(23:02) Saints Amidst Suffering
As conflict rages in places like Gaza and Ukraine, the hosts reflect on how God raises up saints in every era. From the Missionaries of Charity caring for the vulnerable in war zones, to everyday youth ministers and celibate religious, they honor those whose quiet, faithful witness brings hope to the world.

(28:22) Radiant Hope in Service
Expanding on his convention talk, Deacon Bob shares how true Christian hope is made visible through acts of loving service. Drawing from Scripture and the Visitation of Mary, he explains how hope, though unseen, shines clearly in those who serve joyfully and sacrificially.

00:56.380 --> 00:56.841
So that was me.

00:57.101 --> 01:05.775
Yeah, it's good to have a little bit of hope, because just looking around and wonder if there is any, you know, this is what happens when we take a week off.

01:05.915 --> 01:06.275
That's right.

01:06.320 --> 01:09.200
The world goes to poopstown, that's right.

01:10.706 --> 01:11.408
This is a great segue.

01:12.743 --> 01:22.630
This podcast is sponsored by Franciscan University of Steubenville in association with OSVpodcast.com, and check out cool content at faithandreason.com.

01:23.741 --> 01:24.905

01:25.207 --> 01:25.989
Yeah, it's good to see you.

01:26.020 --> 01:27.206
It feels longer than two weeks.

01:28.961 --> 01:29.685
It's been two weeks.

01:30.140 --> 01:34.372
Well, I guess it's been one week, but well, that means two weeks.

01:34.540 --> 01:35.564
Yeah, two weeks, yep.

01:35.664 --> 01:36.547
Yeah, it's been two weeks.

01:36.748 --> 01:40.350
Yep, I went to Arizona and I had breakfast with your brother.

01:40.723 --> 01:41.820
Yeah, how did that come about?

01:42.000 --> 01:44.965
Well, tom is an avid listener of the show, your brother?

01:44.985 --> 01:45.706
Yeah, how did that come about?

01:45.726 --> 01:46.588
Well, tom is an avid listener of the show.

01:46.608 --> 01:49.593
Yes, he is Big fan of the show, big fan, and he heard on the podcast that I was going to Arizona.

01:49.693 --> 01:59.082
So he texted where in Arizona and I'm never quite sure where I go Like I go to airports and I'm always hoping when I get in the car I say so how far are we from the hotel?

01:59.402 --> 02:03.064
And if they're like 20 minutes I'm like that's great, and sometimes they're like two and a half hours.

02:03.084 --> 02:07.066
I'm like, okay, I don't need the small talk that whole time, do I?

02:07.626 --> 02:08.506
Um, this was a.

02:09.067 --> 02:12.508
I was right by uh, where your brother lives.

02:12.628 --> 02:19.451
Uh, I was at the grand Arizona, which is it nice by Tempe, or was it Mesa?

02:19.471 --> 02:30.656
Yeah, I think it was by Tempe and uh, it was Life Teen conference and they get a great rate to go to a resort in June.

02:30.937 --> 02:33.718
Yeah, it was 108 degrees.

02:33.758 --> 02:35.219
Nice, Nice To dry heat.

02:35.704 --> 02:36.619
So that means it only felt like—.

02:36.761 --> 02:38.359
It only felt like 102 degrees.

02:38.440 --> 02:39.444
An oven's dry heat.

02:39.565 --> 02:41.666
Yeah, exactly, but I had a great time with him.

02:41.800 --> 02:43.186
Yeah, it was just nice that he reached out.

02:43.260 --> 02:47.068
We went to the Bigsby Breakfast Diner.

02:47.349 --> 02:48.591
All right, he's never taken me there.

02:48.852 --> 02:49.534
No, he hasn't.

02:49.620 --> 02:50.685
Well, he doesn't like you much.

02:51.341 --> 02:54.467
We talked a lot about you, In fact almost exclusively about you.

02:54.707 --> 02:56.706
That's fitting Our favorite topic.

02:57.020 --> 03:00.862
But it was actually, it was a gift, it was a joy to catch up with him.

03:00.882 --> 03:01.523
That's great.

03:01.743 --> 03:02.523
Yeah, we had fun.

03:02.543 --> 03:03.224
Tom's a great guy.

03:03.404 --> 03:05.785
Yeah, good dad, good husband, good brother.

03:05.925 --> 03:07.466
Yeah, he's an older brother.

03:07.806 --> 03:08.347
No, he's younger.

03:08.547 --> 03:09.787
Okay, yeah, tom will.

03:10.228 --> 03:11.068
I just turned 60,.

03:11.088 --> 03:13.890
Tom will turn 59 in July.

03:14.370 --> 03:17.692
You lost his children in New York right On the subway Children you make yeah, yeah.

03:17.712 --> 03:18.733
So 50%, that's not bad.

03:18.753 --> 03:29.248
That's not bad, that's not bad at all.

03:29.268 --> 03:33.066
That's not bad for a celibate man yeah, 50% is not bad you just got to look on the bright side.

03:33.326 --> 03:44.574
Yeah, and lost, I mean misplaced, distracted New York two hours by himself 12 years old, he gets on a subway, you know, and you're still on the railway.

03:44.614 --> 03:48.108
There it happens, that happens to everybody All the time.

03:48.149 --> 03:52.041
There's no parent that hasn't lost their son or daughter at least once.

03:53.384 --> 03:54.486
Not like that.

03:55.848 --> 03:58.413
Like I said, no parent, no parent right?

03:58.573 --> 04:00.484
Yeah, you don't fall in that category, so that's great.

04:00.825 --> 04:04.902
Well, before we talk more about our personal lives, we have some sports updates.

04:04.962 --> 04:07.345
Sister Mary Beth hangs, you know, I was just before.

04:07.365 --> 04:08.206
We talk more about our personal lives.

04:08.226 --> 04:08.867
We have some sports updates.

04:08.887 --> 04:09.808
Sister Mary Beth hangs.

04:09.828 --> 04:10.489
You know I was just.

04:10.509 --> 04:12.791
We'll talk a little bit about the where we did your retreat, my pilgrimage.

04:13.272 --> 04:16.676
But somebody said to me a female and they were great, very grateful.

04:19.840 --> 04:23.367
They said I'm always grateful about your sports updates, so it gives me things to talk about with my husband and my son.

04:23.387 --> 04:24.368
So there you go, nice.

04:24.589 --> 04:26.853
But this is going to be short because there's not a lot going on.

04:27.354 --> 04:32.209
Yes, well, there are, and there's not much to say about it.

04:32.229 --> 04:32.350
Nba is.

04:32.370 --> 04:39.092
the finals are amazing actually yeah, I think what there is to say about it is it's going better than people expected.

04:39.360 --> 04:41.463
Oh, it's going way better as far as the tournament.

04:41.743 --> 04:44.286
You know the only silver lining in this.

04:44.406 --> 04:51.836
I'm still not going to root for the Indiana Pacers, but at least you know, when the Pacers beat the Cavs, everybody was like wow.

04:51.876 --> 04:53.806
That's it, cavs really choked.

04:54.140 --> 04:57.547
You know, cavs were just a horrible team, and then they beat the Knicks, and then they—.

04:58.562 --> 04:59.286
They're holding their own.

05:00.261 --> 05:02.685
Yeah, and they came in and they are really playing Oklahoma City.

05:02.725 --> 05:08.014
So on Monday, as we're recording this, it is a split 2-2, probably go to game seven.

05:08.034 --> 05:08.775
And they play tonight.

05:08.835 --> 05:10.386
Right, I do believe they play tonight.

05:10.761 --> 05:14.200
I've not seen five seconds, so I'd like to watch a little bit tonight, if I can.

05:14.400 --> 05:20.534
And then in NHL news, I believe the Panthers, the Florida Posers, are up on the Edmonton Oilers, I think 3-2.

05:20.554 --> 05:21.275
I thought it was 3-3.

05:21.315 --> 05:23.240
Up on the Edmonton Oilers, I think 3-2.

05:24.220 --> 05:25.905
I thought it was 3-3.

05:25.925 --> 05:26.386
I don't know.

05:26.406 --> 05:28.251
I think so Okay, I think it's 3-3.

05:29.541 --> 05:31.004
I think the next one's it Edmonton.

05:31.485 --> 05:32.688
The next game is it.

05:32.788 --> 05:34.091
The next game is it game seven?

05:34.131 --> 05:34.572
I think so.

05:47.243 --> 05:49.025
By the time you hear this podcast, you might already know who has won the NHL.

05:49.045 --> 05:52.250
It'd be interesting to go oh, let's go see what's going on with the NHL.

05:52.270 --> 05:53.311
What would you say?

05:53.331 --> 05:54.793
six Gosh, that's like over half of our listening audience.

05:54.813 --> 05:55.574
I wouldn't say that many.

05:55.935 --> 05:57.117
But it is a fun time if you don't watch hockey.

05:57.137 --> 05:57.858
A game seven of the Stanley Cup?

05:57.878 --> 05:58.238
Oh yeah, absolutely.

05:58.258 --> 05:59.460
I mean, that's just you just got to.

06:00.000 --> 06:00.340
Playoff hockey.

06:00.380 --> 06:02.702
I'm not a huge hockey fan, but playoff hockey is the best.

06:02.723 --> 06:03.723
Do you know what?

06:03.784 --> 06:04.724
I watched on a treadmill.

06:04.764 --> 06:06.286
This was exciting and I texted you about it.

06:06.346 --> 06:08.728
Is it still called the French Open, the Roland Garros?

06:08.768 --> 06:12.612
The Roland Garros yeah it's the French Open, but why do they keep calling it the Roland Garros?

06:12.632 --> 06:13.693
Because that's where they play.

06:14.273 --> 06:16.175
Okay, but I didn't see the word French Open anywhere.

06:16.535 --> 06:17.376
I don't know what to say to that.

06:17.876 --> 06:18.677
Okay, well, move on then.

06:19.681 --> 06:32.256
You're right, best I was where I was I was in poland, yeah, yeah, you're, because I was texting you, I didn't know what time zone it was crazy, longest french open ever final in the ever uh, sinner was one of them.

06:32.460 --> 06:33.684
Yeah, he's the one, aren't we all?

06:33.944 --> 06:41.048
He's the one that met with holy father okay, janik sinner, and gave him, and then carlos alcatraz, alcaraz, yep, yeah, okay, who is?

06:41.189 --> 06:42.672
spanish, I believe.

06:42.772 --> 06:43.554
I think he's spanish.

06:43.781 --> 06:44.968
He's a spaniard, he might be.

06:45.109 --> 06:46.341
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

06:46.462 --> 06:50.610
That was fantastic, and those two guys are the head and shoulders above everybody.

06:50.860 --> 06:57.911
And so if you don't know much about tennis and I don't know much about tennis Sinner came out and he won the first two sets.

06:57.980 --> 07:02.325
If you win three sets, you win, and he was one point away from winning the third set.

07:03.106 --> 07:08.252
And then Carlos came back and won the next three.

07:08.592 --> 07:09.373
It was amazing.

07:09.513 --> 07:12.757
It was amazing he had Matt's point several times and couldn't get it done.

07:13.340 --> 07:16.470
Yeah, yeah yeah, again, I jumped in, I think at the very end of the fifth set.

07:16.650 --> 07:19.721
Yeah, it was five and a half hours, I mean that's grueling?

07:20.001 --> 07:20.722
Yeah, thankfully I didn't.

07:20.822 --> 07:22.544
I watched the end of it and you know what was sweet.

07:22.644 --> 07:26.228
At the end, Carlos immediately ran into the stands and hugged his family.

07:26.248 --> 07:28.590
Yeah, it was really beautiful yeah it was very, very cool.

07:28.790 --> 07:30.652
But yeah, and Carlos ended up winning.

07:30.672 --> 07:32.394
So if you're a tennis fan, that was amazing.

07:33.155 --> 07:34.276
Not a lot going on in the sports.

07:37.100 --> 07:37.921
The Colorado Rockies are still horrible.

07:37.941 --> 07:39.704
We'll keep you posted if anything changes there.

07:39.744 --> 07:40.486
Who won the?

07:40.546 --> 07:42.008
There's a golf thing in Pittsburgh.

07:42.088 --> 07:45.534
Yep, JJ Spahn Is that somebody we've heard of before, Not?

07:45.614 --> 07:49.085
really, in fact, no, not really First time winner.

07:49.125 --> 07:52.568
As far as the major, I think he's won, maybe once on the PGA.

07:52.689 --> 07:57.451
That's cool, though I heard he sank like a 62-foot putt to win it, or something.

07:57.740 --> 08:01.691
Well, he sank a 62-foot for the last putt of the match.

08:02.060 --> 08:08.597
He was already up, so he could have missed it and then made the next one and still win, but it was a nice finish for him.

08:08.938 --> 08:09.900
Yeah, I mean it was in Oakmont.

08:09.920 --> 08:12.320
The weather's been horrible these past few days.

08:12.340 --> 08:19.761
It was in Oakmont, which is in Pittsburgh, so I should have planned that a little bit better when I planned my whole approach, yeah, it's one of the toughest courses.

08:19.881 --> 08:21.723
I think he ended up two under.

08:22.584 --> 08:23.665
He might have been the only person.

08:23.685 --> 08:24.425
Maybe there was one.

08:24.485 --> 08:27.228
No, the other guy was one under, or maybe he was even.

08:27.288 --> 08:30.130
But yeah, so, yeah, nice guy, actually really cute.

08:30.171 --> 08:34.775
He's got two little girls, so he got the trophy and it was on Father's Day.

08:34.915 --> 08:44.430
Yeah, and his wife and his two kids were there and one of them says Daddy, we need to hurry up, it's my bedtime and he says he says, uh, this is all recorded.

08:44.451 --> 08:48.365
He says you get to stay up late tonight and she goes yay, so it's really.

08:48.486 --> 08:49.729
It's a great kind of a great scene.

08:50.471 --> 08:52.123
Yeah, right, so the other thing that's going on.

08:52.163 --> 08:59.270
That has nothing to do with sports or nothing to do with anything like that, that, but you are doing oh, no, no, no, no, oh sorry we're still in this.

08:59.451 --> 09:01.221
Oh, you're doing an audiobook I am.

09:01.402 --> 09:02.784
yeah, this is so exciting.

09:02.864 --> 09:11.476
So my so the youth ministry book I wrote, sharing the Gospel with Our Lives, was published by OSV last year.

09:12.020 --> 09:16.612
And I've been telling OSV for a while let's do an audio book, let's do an audio book.

09:16.961 --> 09:18.624
And I would try to explain to them.

09:18.664 --> 09:23.174
My youth ministry audience aren't really known as readers, so to speak.

09:23.720 --> 09:29.067
So a couple months ago they said all right, we talked about it, because they don't automatically do audiobooks.

09:29.120 --> 09:31.609
I don't think they do many audiobooks, we'll find out.

09:32.280 --> 09:35.710
And they said we decided that we would put yours up as an audiobook.

09:35.890 --> 09:36.692
And I was like woo-hoo.

09:37.300 --> 09:39.208
And I said so when can I start recording it?

09:39.280 --> 09:42.105
And they said, oh no, no, you don't have to worry about it, we're going to take care of it.

09:42.847 --> 09:43.568
And I said what do you mean?

09:43.588 --> 09:46.213
They said, well, we have like a production company doing all that stuff.

09:46.573 --> 09:50.147
And I said, well, I'd like to read, could I read it?

09:50.788 --> 09:53.081
And they said, well, we'll just connect you with them and you can audition.

09:53.241 --> 09:57.306
So I got to audition and I sounded just like Bob Rice.

09:57.866 --> 09:59.408
The trick is to speak through the nose.

09:59.969 --> 10:02.592
It's all in the nose, the nasal resonance.

10:02.612 --> 10:03.874
That was the sound they were going for.

10:03.994 --> 10:06.156
Yeah, I do an incredible Bob Rice impersonation.

10:06.360 --> 10:11.473
So I got the job and I am driving to Columbus tomorrow.

10:11.980 --> 10:14.127
Then I said I have a microphone, can I just do it at my house?

10:14.208 --> 10:15.211
No, you have to do it in Columbus.

10:15.780 --> 10:18.630
And I thought it was going to be a studio and I just got the address today.

10:18.920 --> 10:20.042
It's in some guy's house.

10:20.362 --> 10:20.883
I'm like come on.

10:20.903 --> 10:21.704
I'm like come on, there you go.

10:22.686 --> 10:23.347
No, no, it's.

10:23.427 --> 10:25.450
But I'm sure it's going to be great, so I'm actually looking forward to it.

10:25.530 --> 10:33.200
So there are two audio book stories that go with this One was you'd asked if I'd ever done one, so one of mine we did, and it was in Cincinnati.

10:33.440 --> 10:35.366
Actually, I had to drive for Cincinnati for it.

10:36.208 --> 10:37.191
You just read it, it's fine.

10:45.113 --> 10:45.775
Oh, that is true.

10:46.260 --> 10:51.167
Okay, but what I also didn't know is you only get to listen for a certain number of hours, 14 hours a month.

10:52.029 --> 10:57.782
Okay, I was literally listening to an interesting book.

10:57.850 --> 11:02.282
It was written by the Navy SEAL who went after Osama bin Laden.

11:02.342 --> 11:02.482
Okay.

11:03.430 --> 11:09.203
There was literally 15 minutes left in the book and it goes beep.

11:09.831 --> 11:10.675
I just started this.

11:10.770 --> 11:12.236
I'd never used audiobook before it goes.

11:12.317 --> 11:12.517
Beep.

11:12.910 --> 11:14.838
You have used your time for this month.

11:14.990 --> 11:17.659
I said you have got to be kidding me.

11:17.810 --> 11:22.797
Literally 15 minutes left in this, so I tried every way to figure out is there some way around this?

11:23.479 --> 11:24.040
There is not.

11:24.060 --> 11:26.019
There is not, so I was not aware of that.

11:26.140 --> 11:27.269
Yeah, well, there you go.

11:33.920 --> 11:41.130
And they don't have all of the audiobooks, but they have quitele unlimited yeah yeah, which there's so many free books, and many of them are fantastic.

11:41.591 --> 11:46.922
So when you can also do, the audio book, uh, through the library, I think it's called.

11:46.962 --> 11:47.831
What's the name of that?

11:48.392 --> 11:54.184
Like streaming yeah, oh yeah, if you, if you have a library card hoopla I think it's hoopla.

11:54.450 --> 11:55.894
Okay is an app that you can do.

11:55.934 --> 11:58.521
Yeah, I'd never before Did you try to do that to finish that book.

11:58.962 --> 11:59.784
Oh, that's a good idea.

11:59.884 --> 12:00.947
Maybe that's what I should do.

12:01.127 --> 12:02.230
Maybe that's what I should do.

12:03.294 --> 12:04.178
I mean, I know the ending.

12:04.270 --> 12:05.295
I mean, let's be honest here.

12:06.231 --> 12:07.155
Maybe it's a trick ending.

12:10.113 --> 12:14.377
But then I was kind of fascinated you know what I think making the Resurrection of the Christ movie.

12:14.457 --> 12:17.360
I've heard that, yeah, that'd be a trick ending.

12:17.460 --> 12:18.881
Well, let's make one.

12:19.702 --> 12:20.423
Like he rises.

12:20.723 --> 12:23.145
Well, like he rises and then he beats up people.

12:23.306 --> 12:24.487
Okay, All right we'll go with that.

12:26.771 --> 12:28.493
Now it's our end.

12:30.976 --> 12:36.664
Last summer, more than 60,000 Catholics attended the National Eucharistic Congress, and you were one of them.

12:36.864 --> 12:37.125
I was.

12:43.050 --> 12:45.107
Now you can hear about the behind the scenes of this historic event in the newest episode of In Person.

12:45.127 --> 12:45.530
That sounds exciting.

12:45.771 --> 12:47.437
All the infighting, that's right.

12:47.871 --> 12:50.775
All of the Contracts yeah, that's right.

12:50.856 --> 12:51.879
Negotiations.

12:52.701 --> 12:54.777
Yeah, in this, all the liturgical battles.

13:01.490 --> 13:05.450
In this episode, father Dave sits down with Bishop Andrew Cozzens of the Diocese of Crookston, minnesota, who helped lead the National Eucharistic Congress and Revival.

13:05.670 --> 13:07.076
He didn't help it, he was the dude.

13:07.570 --> 13:13.598
Bishop Cozzens talked about the powerful work he saw God do through the Congress, as well as his own deep love for the Eucharist.

13:13.990 --> 13:21.111
Bishop Cozzens and Father Dave also share their initial reactions to the election of Pope Leo XIV Pope, pope, pope, pope, pope, pope.

13:22.276 --> 13:24.698
It's a fun and encouraging conversation you don't want to miss.

13:25.190 --> 13:28.238
Watch in person on faithandreasoncom.

13:28.810 --> 13:33.262
That's faithandreasoncom.

13:36.537 --> 13:38.862
God bless America.

13:39.023 --> 13:43.155
Yeah Well, Bishop Cozzens.

13:43.175 --> 13:44.580
That's a great response, yeah.

13:44.850 --> 13:47.379
Well, Bishop Cozzens is such a good guy he's a great dude.

13:48.111 --> 13:49.330
I think we talked about him previously.

13:49.370 --> 13:52.259
Because we gave him a faux doctorate.

13:52.720 --> 13:57.517
Yeah, and when we get bishops like that, it's very hopeful Signs of hope.

13:57.678 --> 13:58.659
Hope Bing bing b go.

13:58.679 --> 13:59.440
It's very hopeful Signs of hope, hope.

13:59.460 --> 14:00.662
Bing, bing, bing it was yeah, so how was your?

14:00.703 --> 14:01.023
retreat.

14:01.644 --> 14:07.322
It was fantastic, so I went to the Catholic Youth Ministry Conference in Arizona as.

14:07.362 --> 14:10.730
I mentioned, it was very hot outside, but it was very fun inside.

14:10.810 --> 14:12.402
Did you see our friend Mark Hart?

14:12.483 --> 14:13.390
I did see our friend Mark Hart.

14:13.410 --> 14:14.314
How is our friend?

14:14.354 --> 14:15.680
How is our friend, he's doing, he's doing.

14:15.700 --> 14:19.052
Good mark in a long time mark is the bible geek is he?

14:19.373 --> 14:20.135
What's his title?

14:20.415 --> 14:26.935
I think his title is cio like chief innovation he used to be vice president, but he just comes up with great ideas.

14:27.376 --> 14:34.440
Uh and just uh, he wrote the foreword to my book, which was a, which was a wonderful gift for him to do and just a great guy really.

14:34.460 --> 14:36.393
So that's great, so I got to see mark hart.

14:36.454 --> 14:41.127
I got to see randy Rouse, our good friend Andrew Laubacher was leading the music.

14:41.207 --> 14:43.493
Oh, that's great, so I got to spend some time with him.

14:43.633 --> 14:46.240
Of course, dan Bozak on bass, everywhere you go, dan.

14:46.260 --> 14:48.811
Bozak is on bass and yeah, it was just a gift.

14:48.850 --> 14:53.112
They had probably about a thousand people involved in youth ministry, right.

14:53.132 --> 14:55.854
So this was for youth ministers or the teens.

14:55.894 --> 14:57.555
No, this was for the ministers, so it was.

14:57.575 --> 14:59.075
Catholic Youth Ministry Conference.

14:59.095 --> 15:05.278
So these were adults, most of whom subscribed to Life Teen, but it's also just a great youth ministry conference.

15:05.298 --> 15:07.039
They do a really top-notch job.

15:07.559 --> 15:08.940
Who are some of the other speakers that were?

15:08.960 --> 15:17.443
good Sister Josephine was there which was great, Obviously Mark and Randu Paul George was there.

15:18.384 --> 15:21.025
And he got to give a talk as well.

15:21.205 --> 15:21.906
He did wonderfully.

15:21.946 --> 15:23.226
It's their 40th anniversary.

15:23.246 --> 15:23.926
Is it really they started?

15:24.087 --> 15:26.268
in 1985.

15:26.428 --> 15:28.529
Okay, and it was just very hopeful.

15:32.830 --> 15:34.977
It's fun, having been involved in youth ministry now for 30 years.

15:35.037 --> 15:37.404
I had a number of people say I was a teen at the conference that you hosted.

15:37.670 --> 15:43.463
Yeah, yeah, and here they are now in ministry and doing things Retiring, yeah, exactly.

15:43.790 --> 16:00.685
Or they were connected with our Catechetical Institute and did the youth ministry certification and I did most of those videos and it was just actually—for me it was a blessing to—you don't always get to see a lot of fruit in ministry and it was just very honoring.

16:00.770 --> 16:03.967
I hadn't been at that conference since a couple years, before COVID.

16:04.047 --> 16:04.530
Oh, really Okay.

16:05.191 --> 16:08.201
So I just got my doctorate, but I hadn't yet been ordained.

16:08.650 --> 16:22.702
And yeah, just to be there with everybody and just to see the enthusiasm of working with young people, fighting hard to love young people, to advocate for young people you know just whenever you're in a room of people with a similar heart and vision.

16:22.790 --> 16:24.454
It's always a very, very blessed event.

16:24.674 --> 16:27.059
Cool yeah, and you went to Poland.

16:27.640 --> 16:29.063
I did Tell me more.

16:29.790 --> 16:30.533
I went to Poland.

16:30.714 --> 16:31.015
Okay.

16:32.561 --> 16:32.822
Go ahead.

16:32.842 --> 16:33.907
I thought you were going to say something.

16:34.168 --> 16:35.632
No, I mean, we could just stop now.

16:35.732 --> 16:36.794
No, I went to Poland.

16:37.395 --> 16:37.897
Have you been?

16:38.277 --> 16:38.999
To Poland yeah.

16:39.460 --> 16:39.680
No.

16:40.562 --> 16:41.244
Why do you laugh?

16:41.370 --> 16:43.899
Well, we've just said the word Poland so many times.

16:44.030 --> 16:46.740
If somebody was doing a Poland drinking game, they'd be on the floor by now.

16:46.930 --> 16:49.682
Which is a popular game with podcasts.

16:49.722 --> 16:51.490
Apparently no right.

16:51.650 --> 16:57.374
So myself and about 70 pilgrims went Myself and about 70 pilgrims went.

16:57.394 --> 16:58.434
Noel Merring went with me.

16:58.454 --> 16:59.495
You say 70 pilgrims.

16:59.615 --> 17:02.557
I immediately think of people with hats with belt buckles on them.

17:02.817 --> 17:06.099
That's right, yeah, yeah, okay, do you make them wear that?

17:06.119 --> 17:07.920
Yes, that's fair, in little bonnets.

17:08.000 --> 17:09.741
Yes, yes, that's the way it should be.

17:10.041 --> 17:10.902
Absolutely no.

17:10.962 --> 17:25.966
It during a podcast doing a pilgrimage in Ireland and I was in the sacristy talking to another friar who was hosting us in Galway.

17:25.986 --> 17:26.510
An Irish friar.

17:27.112 --> 17:30.593
Yeah, and we were talking about pilgrimages and he said he goes.

17:30.614 --> 17:32.058
Yeah, I used to lead pilgrimages.

17:32.179 --> 17:33.452
I said oh really he goes.

17:33.473 --> 17:35.079
Yep, there's one in every group.

17:36.571 --> 17:37.453
How many were in this group?

17:37.513 --> 17:40.501
No, actually my groups are always fantastic.

17:40.581 --> 17:41.142
Oh sure they are.

17:42.030 --> 17:42.673
But it was a really.

17:42.753 --> 17:44.178
Actually it really was a great group.

17:44.812 --> 17:45.936
We had about 70 people.

17:46.016 --> 17:46.237
It was cool.

17:46.730 --> 17:50.101
One of the families they brought their kids.

17:50.190 --> 17:51.735
So mom and dad and four kids.

17:51.895 --> 17:53.580
Oh, how old were the kids In college ages?

17:53.640 --> 17:56.215
Okay, yeah, and one had actually graduated Autumn Phillips.

17:56.336 --> 18:01.480
I don't know if you know Autumn Just a great family, but it's always nice to have families and other people, yeah.

18:02.612 --> 18:04.438
Do you go to like Auschwitz and Dachau?

18:04.538 --> 18:06.384
Yes, oh gosh, yeah, yeah, Dachau, Dachau.

18:06.811 --> 18:08.095
I think that Dachau is in Germany.

18:08.155 --> 18:18.519
I think, wow, right Kolbe and Holy Father John Paul all alive at the same time.

18:19.152 --> 18:24.217
They actually lived at one particular time, for a very brief time, within about 30 miles from each other.

18:24.590 --> 18:27.540
They were all in the same place, but never actually met any of them.

18:27.804 --> 18:37.836
They never met each other, met each other but if you think about that, I mean, those are three of the most significant saints of the last hundred years and all within this little, no name Poland, insignificant country.

18:37.856 --> 18:40.411
So saints of the last hundred years and all within this little, no-name Poland, insignificant country.

18:40.472 --> 18:42.496
So it's just a beautiful pilgrimage.

18:42.536 --> 18:52.274
We started up in Warsaw and then we went to the friary that Kolbe established, and I mean to be able to celebrate Mass at the altar that Kolbe celebrated.

18:52.294 --> 18:55.045
Mass was just a real, a tremendous blessing.

18:55.066 --> 18:59.641
And then, the coolest thing, everything I've done on this pilgrimage I've done before, with the exception.

18:59.750 --> 19:04.859
We went to St Faustina's hometown at the little church that she was.

19:05.090 --> 19:06.997
It was just this little teeny church.

19:07.057 --> 19:16.495
I had to laugh because I mean, there was this little teeny church and rather than tearing that down and building a new one, they just renovated and expanded it, much like we've done here.

19:18.630 --> 19:21.277
But you look at it and it's like, honestly, they kind of did the same thing we did.

19:21.317 --> 19:23.142
They embraced that this is what they had.

19:23.410 --> 19:26.758
Yeah, I mean because it's two totally different types and looks.

19:26.878 --> 19:28.422
But it was just wonderful.

19:28.442 --> 19:33.913
But the coolest thing is, then we went to her home and I mean, bob, it's this teeny home.

19:34.014 --> 19:35.915
I can't say how small, I mean just teeny.

19:36.395 --> 19:37.796
I think there were 10 kids.

19:38.236 --> 19:46.389
She was literally born in the home, born in the living room, which is typical, and then it was her niece that actually gave us a little tour.

19:47.322 --> 19:50.849
So, St Faustina's niece, and then we prayed the chaplet of divine mercy in her backyard.

19:51.500 --> 19:52.920
There's just something really beautiful.

19:53.101 --> 19:55.749
Just, you know, this is the place that Faustina grew up.

19:56.260 --> 20:00.810
She played with her brothers and sisters, so it was just a very, very touching scene.

20:01.380 --> 20:03.200
I mean, again, there's the places you mentioned.

20:03.541 --> 20:16.124
We went to Auschwitz and it's funny, I would ask pilgrims at the beginning I would say, like, what are you looking forward to most?

20:16.144 --> 20:18.595
And fairly early somebody said, well, I mean, I don't know if I'm looking forward to it, but I really so.

20:18.615 --> 20:22.967
From then on I would say it's okay if you say you're looking forward to going to Auschwitz because it's kind of like you morbid, why would you?

20:22.987 --> 20:24.390
want to look forward to that.

20:24.430 --> 20:27.416
You sicko, but it's profoundly moving.

20:27.556 --> 20:30.141
I mean to go to Auschwitz, and it's interesting to think so.

20:31.484 --> 20:34.130
One morning or one afternoon we were at Divine Mercy.

20:34.571 --> 20:43.045
We went obviously to Krakow, which is where Faustina's buried and that's where the Shrine of the Divine Mercy, and then the next morning to go to Auschwitz.

20:43.526 --> 20:48.888
And there's a connection between this divine, the mercy of God, and the great mercy of God, and Auschwitz.

20:48.928 --> 20:50.893
That's just very, very moving.

20:51.180 --> 20:53.447
So to be able to go to Auschwitz.

20:53.487 --> 20:55.091
We had this kind of weird thing happen.

20:55.200 --> 20:56.827
We don't know still why it happened.

20:58.241 --> 21:05.010
So there's Auschwitz, and then about two kilometers away is Birkenau, and Birkenau was an extermination camp.

21:05.300 --> 21:10.794
Auschwitz was a concentration camp but for some reason some of the people couldn't get.

21:10.855 --> 21:14.143
Auschwitz was a concentration camp but for some reason some of the people couldn't get into Auschwitz.

21:14.163 --> 21:15.828
Their ticket didn't work and they wouldn't just give them a new ticket.

21:15.848 --> 21:16.851
It was this big drama.

21:16.871 --> 21:23.742
So I went to Birkenau with them and Birkenau is what you kind of picture, you know, at the end of Schindler's List, where the train tracks go right to the gas chambers.

21:23.762 --> 21:24.445
That's Birkenau.

21:25.368 --> 21:33.469
But again, to go there and we all gathered there and pray the chaplet of divine mercy there, it's one of those things you don't enjoy.

21:33.489 --> 21:35.514
I mean it's weird to say you enjoy it.

21:35.560 --> 21:36.705
You don't enjoy it but-.

21:36.845 --> 21:39.907
You never forget it, you never forget it and, honestly, it's important.

21:40.007 --> 21:55.212
It's important to go and it's important for us to see it, and our guide was sharing with us that she had a hard time going to Auschwitz because that's her job, and she just reminded herself that if you're ignorant to history, you'll repeat it.

21:55.340 --> 22:06.669
Now I'd love to say that we're never going to do something like this again, and yet I find myself thinking that that was in the 40s and then, literally 40 years later, you have what happened in.

22:07.030 --> 22:10.258
Rwandanda the genocide of 900,000 people in 90 days.

22:10.340 --> 22:15.900
So we can never underestimate or overestimate how cruel we can be to each other.

22:16.001 --> 22:19.537
But it was a beautiful pilgrimage just John Paul.

22:20.223 --> 22:22.280
The new shrine that they built at John Paul is beautiful.

22:23.544 --> 22:27.142
I think our pilgrims had a great time so it was real blessed flight home was great.

22:27.162 --> 22:28.505
Flight attendants might be maybe the best flight attendants.

22:28.525 --> 22:29.949
I think our pilgrims had a great time, yeah, so it was real blessed.

22:29.989 --> 22:30.670
Yeah, yeah, flight home was great.

22:30.690 --> 22:34.079
Flight attendants might be the I was talking to mom just a minute ago maybe the best flight attendants I've ever had.

22:34.319 --> 22:34.460
Wow.

22:34.960 --> 22:38.602
Honestly, they were just so thoughtful and helpful.

22:39.022 --> 22:45.806
Yeah, so it's great, that's awesome, yeah, but it's good to be home, yeah, and I wonder you what saints might come out.

22:45.906 --> 22:50.348
It's right, where there's evil, god can shine the brightest.

22:50.648 --> 23:01.434
I mean, you think of what it would have been like in those years to live in Poland when Hitler rolls in and occupies it and the rest of the world goes oh well, okay, I guess so.

23:02.295 --> 23:08.998
And then all the atrocities that start happening behind when, no, when no one's watching.

23:09.258 --> 23:15.824
You know setting up those concentration camps and those execution camps.

23:15.845 --> 23:18.092
And then you know today, I mean you know just all the war that's going on.

23:18.232 --> 23:31.287
You know, with now Israel and Iran throwing missiles at each other, ukraine and Russia still fighting, and I wonder, you know what saints are present in the midst of those, because there's always saints present.

23:32.251 --> 23:33.060
Yeah, who's raising up we?

23:33.080 --> 23:39.292
don't know those stories right now, just like nobody knew the story of Kolbe at the time of what was going on.

23:40.743 --> 23:45.213
But when it's easy to be God, where are you in the midst of it?

23:45.861 --> 24:10.173
I think one thing to remind ourselves is if you look, another thing I think you can learn from ourselves is if you look, another thing I think you can learn from history is that God is present there and the stories that come out afterwards are often some incredible stories of hope and faith, and men and women sacrificing themselves and living faithfully in an impossible, what seems to be an impossible situation.

24:10.380 --> 24:11.506
Yeah, you mentioned those things.

24:11.880 --> 24:18.070
When I'm on pilgrimage I'm kind of unplugged, honestly, so I wasn't aware of a lot of that was going on.

24:18.200 --> 24:21.547
One of the nights I was just talking to my mom, just checking in and seeing how she's doing.

24:22.642 --> 24:26.000
She said, you know, she just kind of mentioned the thing going on in Los Angeles.

24:26.180 --> 24:27.784
I said, well, what's going on in Los Angeles?

24:27.804 --> 24:29.708
She kind of mentioned the thing going on in Los Angeles.

24:29.728 --> 24:30.770
I said, well, what's going on in Los Angeles?

24:30.790 --> 24:39.744
She goes okay, there's massive riots, and then I guess there were rallies and riots, and it wasn't all riots, it wasn't riot everywhere, but all that was going on.

24:39.764 --> 24:43.674
And then I went online just to find out what was going on and then found out about the Iran and the situation there.

24:43.975 --> 24:51.729
And yeah, you're absolutely right, who are the people, who are the individuals that the Lord are going to raise up and use to bring peace?

24:51.860 --> 25:02.466
I mean, it's oftentimes the one that you don't recognize and, honestly, sometimes the one you think's kind of out there or missing things or naive or something like that, so it'll be interesting.

25:03.701 --> 25:07.231
Did you watch, catch any of the rally that took place?

25:07.320 --> 25:07.621
What was it?

25:07.702 --> 25:08.305
Two days ago?

25:09.500 --> 25:12.149
It was the 250th anniversary.

25:12.229 --> 25:16.116
Right, yeah, it was Flag Day and it was the anniversary of the Army.

25:16.177 --> 25:16.900
Of the Army or something.

25:18.066 --> 25:19.254
And it was Trump's birthday.

25:19.616 --> 25:20.340
Oh, happy birthday.

25:20.822 --> 25:23.050
So I did catch some of the parade.

25:23.300 --> 25:31.909
I mean, I think, at least from what I hear in the news, there was a lot of concern and yet thankfully things went pretty, pretty smoothly because it was.

25:32.711 --> 25:33.693
It was about something else.

25:35.024 --> 25:38.940
Yeah, and the military really tries to not be political.

25:39.242 --> 25:39.704
You know they're.

25:39.825 --> 25:42.580
They're here to defend all of our freedom.

25:42.740 --> 25:43.021
And so.

25:43.061 --> 25:43.161
I'm.

25:43.742 --> 25:44.623
I'm glad it didn't.

25:45.845 --> 25:52.482
Yeah, I mean you don't to conflate two things Like the army should celebrate 250 years of history you just think of.

25:52.642 --> 26:07.975
We are only a country because of our armed forces and it's Flag Day, and those are things we should be proud of, and I think in a sense, particularly when the protests are civil and peaceful, that's a great part of being an American that we can do that.

26:08.080 --> 26:09.909
I mean you couldn't do that in Nazi-occupied Germany, you couldn't do that in a great part of being an American that we can do that.

26:09.862 --> 26:13.233
I mean you couldn't do that in Nazi-occupied Germany, you couldn't do that in a lot of other places.

26:13.600 --> 26:17.151
But your assertion about it not being nonpolitical is absolutely right.

26:17.220 --> 26:18.706
Unfortunately, I think it's become political.

26:18.726 --> 26:23.592
Yes, yes, my suspicion is that that population there was probably leaning one way.

26:24.502 --> 26:29.000
But it's always interesting going to Europe and having conversation with some of the people.

26:29.120 --> 26:29.822
There are guides.

26:29.882 --> 26:35.727
I always like to talk to the guides just about some more personal things, about, yeah, their thoughts of the united states and this and the other.

26:35.907 --> 26:37.892
And you know both of the guys there.

26:38.744 --> 26:49.834
You know they said there's the policy and all that, but he said we will forever be grateful to the united states you know, and because you guys sacrificed your men and women to come and to free us and liberate us.

26:50.220 --> 26:55.333
And so it's interesting that, yeah, they do not have a short memory on that.

26:55.860 --> 27:03.334
There's a memory that they realize that their lives, their family's lives, their country's lives would be radically different had the United States not done what the United States did.

27:03.460 --> 27:11.752
So it's important, I suppose, to keep that always in mind In the midst of you know, right now, the political turmoil that's going on big picture.

27:12.653 --> 27:13.514
There's been a lot worse.

27:13.935 --> 27:23.800
Yeah, yeah, and we just keep praying for people to be treated with human dignity and for you know the common good to reign in terms of policy and decision making.

27:24.904 --> 27:25.687
And yeah, just peace.

27:25.948 --> 27:26.942
Yeah, you were talking about.

27:26.983 --> 27:28.829
we're going to talking a little bit about signs of hope.

27:28.920 --> 27:29.985
There was one story that was.

27:30.501 --> 27:31.767
It was actually happening in LA.

27:32.480 --> 27:38.249
It wasn't a priest, but it was some religious figure, I don't exactly remember, and it was just him just kind of caring for people.

27:38.781 --> 27:44.707
It didn't look like he was picking sides, but just being present to people, trying to comfort them.

27:45.021 --> 27:54.102
And it's again people like that that are willing to just step out, try to move past.

27:54.122 --> 27:58.020
It's not to say we don't have opinions or agendas, but those are going to be what ultimately going to dominate us and recognize the people that are in front of us and care for them.

27:58.181 --> 28:02.881
Yeah, it made me think that today, the reading, the first reading is now is the time of salvation.

28:02.961 --> 28:08.092
Now is the unacceptable time that, you know, we can always think about.

28:08.112 --> 28:09.441
What could I do or what should I do?

28:09.481 --> 28:14.902
Well, do something now, you know, reach out to somebody, call somebody in the midst of kind of chaos.

28:14.962 --> 28:17.751
It's important that we were more intentional about doing something good.

28:18.140 --> 28:19.845
Yeah, absolutely yeah.

28:19.965 --> 28:20.928
That's a great sign of hope.

28:21.189 --> 28:21.871
Yep you.

28:22.541 --> 28:44.622
My sign of hope would be just the men and women who are doing ministry with young people, and I saw a lot of alumni and I mean, these are the things that don't make news, you know, but in every parish, in every place, there are people who are deciding that serving others is going to be at the core of who they are.

28:45.003 --> 28:57.246
And the theme of the conference was Radiant Hope, which tied in very nicely, of course, to our podcast and I got to give a talk on it and they asked me to talk about Radiant Hope in service.

28:57.587 --> 29:08.187
That was the talk I got because, being a deacon, that seemed like a good thing to do and one of the things is it's fun to get a topic title because it just gets you off your maybe routine if.

29:08.227 --> 29:15.988
I've given this talk before and, as I was praying through it and something I shared with the folks, there was this idea that, you know, we hope in what we cannot see.

29:16.109 --> 29:18.881
That's what St Paul says, for who hopes in what one does see?

29:18.981 --> 29:21.125
So how do you see hope?

29:21.827 --> 29:24.892
The answer is we see hope in the way other people serve.

29:25.634 --> 29:29.149
Like it's, you know, like you can't see light, but you can see what light reflects on.

29:29.831 --> 29:33.566
And even, for example, the visitation of Mary.

29:33.686 --> 29:51.382
She's told that she is going to be with child, with the Son of God, and her immediate response is and my cousin is six months pregnant and she's old, I need to go in haste to a hill country and you see that hope in her, in service.

29:51.503 --> 29:55.212
And it wasn't that she was looking to prove what the angel said.

29:55.272 --> 30:05.336
In fact, one of the things that Elizabeth says is blessed are you who believed what was told to you would be true, but I also think, other great examples of hope.

30:05.376 --> 30:12.646
Well, I would say, father Dave, yourself or anybody living a celibate life is a statement of hope.

30:12.666 --> 30:16.534
You might say, whoa, you've got one life, bro, you've got to live it.

30:16.760 --> 30:25.907
And the statement of the celibate is no, we have more than this life, and actually the next life is better and I want to live that life now.

30:25.987 --> 30:28.492
I want to be a witness to that life now.

30:28.592 --> 30:30.135
Or you think of religious orders?

30:31.060 --> 30:45.393
I saw a beautiful story of the missionary charity sisters who are taking care of physically and mentally handicapped people in Gaza, and numerous times the army has said okay, you can go, we'll protect you, we'll give you a corridor.

30:45.600 --> 30:47.787
And of course, they're like well, can we bring these people with us?

30:47.907 --> 30:49.011
No, well, then we're staying.

30:49.661 --> 30:55.655
And it was this video interview and they were smiling and they were laughing and they were—it's just like—but that's hope, right.

30:56.502 --> 30:59.751
I mean like, why would you possibly do such a thing?

31:00.020 --> 31:06.183
Well, it's the hope and the resurrection, and you can't see the hope, but you see it reflected in the way we serve.

31:06.223 --> 31:19.629
Yeah, that's great and I think, seeing those gifts of service around us and even, just again, priests, religious celibates, all of those we might take for granted, but those really are signs of something better.

31:20.169 --> 31:28.093
Yeah, I think and you and I have said this a thousand times on podcasts is if we pray for eyes that can see there's hope all around us.

31:28.293 --> 31:38.978
Yeah, you know, and we can get colored by what the media is saying, or colored what you know Uncle Jim is saying, or whoever, and we need to be able to step back, pray the Lord gives us vision and is able to see it.

31:39.219 --> 31:47.723
Yeah, Because we won't see it in the media but, we can see it in the holy men and women, some of whom are hidden figures for now.31:47.944 --> 31:51.690

Yeah, but we can have confidence that God is absolutely present in those places.31:51.830 --> 31:52.752

Amen and pray for them.31:53.092 --> 31:55.376

Amen and pray for them, amen, you're going to do it.31:56.899 --> 31:57.359

You can do it.31:57.520 --> 31:57.700

All right.31:57.840 --> 32:05.502

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your light and your Holy Spirit that allows us to have hope and allows us to see hope.32:05.862 --> 32:09.446

May today, in this time, lord, we be hope for someone else.32:09.746 --> 32:11.428

We make this in your name, jesus, amen.32:11.728 --> 32:11.989

Amen.32:12.349 --> 32:14.511

Thank you, Father Dave, and thank you everybody.32:14.611 --> 32:15.652

We're praying for you.32:15.792 --> 32:19.536
