Saints for Our Time

Two twenty-something saints, mountaineering, and Nike sneakers. Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati prove that holiness doesn’t mean leaving normal life behind—it means living it to the fullest with Christ.  Father Dave and Deacon Bob reflect on Pope Leo’s homily at the canonization Mass for these two young Italians and explore why so many saints begin saying “yes” to God in their youth.  True to They That Hope form, they take a lap through the weekend in sports, from NFL openers to US Open storylines to the enternal LeBron vs. Jordan debate. Then they settle into the title’s theme: modern sanctity. Carlo’s wisdom (“In front of the sun you get a tan; in front of the Eucharist, you become a saint”) and Frassati’s cry “to the heights!” frame a simple invitation: say “yes” to the Lord today.  They close with campus updates, a prayer, and a warm invitation to share your favorite podcast memories. Saints Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, pray for us!    Highlighted Sections  (00:29) Jubilee of Hope and Merch Madness
Father Dave and Deacon Bob kick things off with playful banter about sponsors, the Jubilee Year of Hope, and whether the pope might be a secret podcast listener. They also remind everyone there’s one last chance to snag They That Hope merch, including the highly prized Heather Khym mug, at CatholicToTheMax.com.  (07:24) NFL, Tennis, and the LeBron vs. Jordan Debate
They next jump into sports to discuss the NFL’s opening weekend, recap the US Open finals, and, of course, argue over The Athletic’s “Basketball 100.” Jordan or LeBron? The debate continues.  (15:47) Franciscan Homecoming Preview
Campus is buzzing for Homecoming Weekend with chapel tours, a St. Francis Festival, and alumni reunions. Father Dave and Deacon Bob share details on the newly renovated Christ the King Chapel and joke about who may—or may not—be getting awards at the banquet. (Pssst, sign up to join Homecoming at here.)  (21:43) Five Years of Movies, Memes, and Memories
Looking back on the podcast’s run, the hosts laugh about their obsessions (Hamilton, Top Gun, Black Widow) and reflect on milestones from solar eclipses to campus life during COVID. They recall both joyful and sobering moments, always framed through the lens of hope.  (26:16) Modern Saints for Modern Times
Next, they move into the heart of the episode: celebrating the canonizations of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati. Father Dave and Deacon Bob highlight the families present in Rome, the youthful joy of both saints, and the reminder that holiness often begins with a simple “yes” lived in ordinary life.  (32:54) Carlo’s Wisdom in His Own Words
“In front of the sun you get a tan; in front of the Eucharist, you become a saint!” The hosts share Carlo’s best lines on joy, sin, and holiness, and revisit his Eucharistic Miracles project as a reminder of how young people enrich the Church.  (35:37) Prayer and Sending Forth
The episode closes with gratitude for these new saints, a prayer for their intercession, and a heartfelt thank-you to listeners. As the season draws to a close, Father Dave and Deacon Bob invite fans to send memories and well-wishes to Hope@Franciscan.edu.  Resources Mentioned

00:29.340 --> 00:37.554
Welcome to they that Hope, with Father Dave and Deacon Bob celebrating 2025, the Jubilee of Hope.

00:37.694 --> 00:44.232

00:58.236 --> 00:59.158
And Franciscan University.

00:59.178 --> 01:02.646
I already said, that didn't I, okay, I was thinking do you think— Did I not just say that you might have?

01:02.987 --> 01:12.200
Do you think and maybe we talked about this last week do you think we have the year of hope this year because the Holy Father was paying attention to our podcast?

01:12.300 --> 01:13.466
Oh, it's obvious.

01:13.901 --> 01:16.970
He was always drafting behind everything we were doing, and that's what.

01:16.990 --> 01:20.030
I thought I didn't want to put it out there, but I figured, yeah, okay.

01:28.100 --> 01:29.222
Okay, that's what I figured.

01:29.242 --> 01:35.653
I mean the whole reason okay, I guess we can say it now because we're coming close to the end the whole reason we did this podcast is because Pope Francis asked us to, and the whole reason we're stopping is because Leo said that's enough.

01:35.673 --> 01:35.994
He asked us to.

01:36.014 --> 01:37.761
That's right, that's absolutely right, that's absolutely right.

01:37.781 --> 01:42.990
Well, before we get into deep spiritual content, as you are used to expecting, right, this is our.

01:43.851 --> 01:45.094
We have one more episode after this.

01:45.454 --> 01:45.795
You know what?

01:46.380 --> 01:50.532
If you want to grab they that Hope merch this is your chance.

01:50.660 --> 01:54.348
You've always had a chance, but we're shutting it down, it's going quick folks.

01:55.301 --> 01:58.110
Catholictothemaxcom is the website.

01:58.220 --> 02:04.789
It's a local family that makes great Catholic merch and they did the new crucifix in the Sunday.

02:04.829 --> 02:05.250
Oh, did they?

02:05.391 --> 02:08.152
Yeah, in the Sunday, on the cross in the chapel, yeah, they do wonderful, wonderful stuff.

02:08.173 --> 02:14.590
It is unbelievably beautiful so just worth checking out catholictothemax.com, and also on there there are some mugs.

02:14.680 --> 02:19.251
There's the infamous Heather Khym vandalized mug.

02:19.291 --> 02:21.585
Yes, yes and yeah.

02:21.605 --> 02:22.548
So check it out if you'd like.

02:25.100 --> 02:26.623
And if and yeah, so check it out if you'd like and if you don't, that's fine.

02:26.643 --> 02:28.005
The fact that we were able to weather that storm was pretty amazing.

02:28.025 --> 02:28.146
It was.

02:28.166 --> 02:28.526
That was probably.

02:28.546 --> 02:35.792
You were going to get to memories a little later, but in terms of history, right and if we were to think about podcasts, that really I mean the fact we birthed this podcast.

02:35.812 --> 02:39.926
We birthed Abiding Together we birthed.

02:39.946 --> 02:40.788
It been around for a while.

02:40.828 --> 02:42.392
Yeah, but nobody knew about it.

02:42.432 --> 02:47.807
Yeah, it's kind of like in a conception, thing you know, like Jesus death, then redeemed.

02:48.088 --> 02:52.589
So okay, the Friars are sitting in the TV room.

02:52.609 --> 03:19.995
The other day yesterday I guess it would be watching football and we all there was about five of us and we said it's good to have football back, Isn't it great?

03:20.095 --> 03:21.015
only thing's going on.

03:21.035 --> 03:23.838
The past few weeks it's like this is great.

03:24.758 --> 03:25.299
Are you serious?

03:25.339 --> 03:27.964
You actually put baseball in.

03:28.104 --> 03:29.607
This is going to get us in big trouble.

03:29.707 --> 03:32.874
No, no, okay, sorry, I am so sorry.

03:34.725 --> 03:37.955
My apologies to WNBA for comparing it to baseball.

03:37.975 --> 03:39.680
Exactly, we all know where he was going with that.

03:39.940 --> 03:43.408
I heard your son went to a baseball game After the year.

03:43.548 --> 03:47.908
Okay, we're not going to talk about this in history part, but I looked back through the notes over the last several years.

03:48.080 --> 03:49.985
She came up quite a few times, caitlin Yep.

03:50.145 --> 03:52.150
Yeah, she did, yeah, she was very cool.

03:52.210 --> 03:52.952
Let's not bury the lead.

03:53.020 --> 03:54.050
Your son went to a baseball game.

03:54.100 --> 03:55.662
My son went to a baseball game.

03:55.682 --> 03:59.708
He saw the Pittsburgh Pirates versus the Los Angeles Dod.

04:00.108 --> 04:02.672
Paul Skeens Does he still have a cool mustache?

04:03.673 --> 04:03.894
Yes.

04:03.934 --> 04:09.415
I believe so Pitched, and for the Pirates, obviously our favorite Irish-.

04:09.716 --> 04:10.600
Ohtani, asian player.

04:11.021 --> 04:13.590
They were supposed to pitch against each other, but it didn't work out that way.

04:15.123 --> 04:18.232
Well, that would have been exciting to have two pitchers pitching at each other.

04:18.420 --> 04:19.481
That would make baseball interesting?

04:19.521 --> 04:19.881
It would be.

04:20.042 --> 04:20.882
It would be.

04:21.043 --> 04:25.987
You know they're dodging each other and stuff like that, so but the game was interesting, he said.

04:26.287 --> 04:28.810
Yeah, like the Pirates won Almost.

04:28.870 --> 04:36.496
I think he said almost he said, but it was you know, the Pirates won, which is hard, and there was fireworks and it was like really good playing and people were excited.

04:36.577 --> 04:37.417
I went to the next game.

04:37.620 --> 04:39.664
I wanted myself in one of the Friars it.

04:39.844 --> 04:43.931
It was 72 degrees, beautiful night.

04:43.971 --> 04:46.135
It was just wonderful, but not a lot to say.

04:46.240 --> 04:53.713
Actually, the Nationals have been playing well, but the big baseball news was actually with that crazy woman in Philadelphia.

04:53.840 --> 04:56.068
The big baseball news is never what happens on the field.

04:56.140 --> 04:57.244
No, no it's not.

04:58.248 --> 04:58.569
It's not.

04:58.943 --> 04:59.959
So this home run.

05:00.100 --> 05:01.527
Yeah, let's explain to Sister Mary Beth.

05:01.880 --> 05:03.462
A home run hit in the Phillies game.

05:04.082 --> 05:06.865
It goes and there's this mass crowd that goes and tries to get the ball.

05:06.945 --> 05:09.668
It always happens A guy gets it, takes it to his son.

05:09.728 --> 05:11.410
His son is nine years old.

05:11.450 --> 05:12.491
You've seen the video.

05:12.531 --> 05:14.933
Nine years old, ecstatically thrilled until.

05:15.113 --> 05:16.675
Happy moment he's hugging his son.

05:16.755 --> 05:18.276
This is a great family moment.

05:18.797 --> 05:24.991
And then crazy woman comes over and just starts ripping him Like really startles the father.

05:25.011 --> 05:26.233
He's like what the heck's going on?

05:26.280 --> 05:34.022
And she is just pointing and screaming and so the dad just kind of is like okay, and takes the ball and gives it to the woman who still?

05:34.062 --> 05:35.307
Goes off as she's screaming.

05:35.681 --> 05:43.447
And the announcers actually mentioned it on broadcast, and as the internet has a way of doing, this, woman is not going to leave her house for six months.

05:43.467 --> 05:46.091
This woman needs to get a wig and a disguise.

05:46.271 --> 05:49.115
Yeah, because, oh my goodness, I'm sure there's some side to that story.

05:49.155 --> 05:51.624
We don't know well, it's really actually.

05:51.644 --> 06:02.822
Yeah, the side of her, um, giving everybody a salute on her way out was interesting, but it's funny because the the someone in the internet I mean every angle, everybody was filming this thing.

06:03.124 --> 06:19.989
So there was this report that it was a certain woman in philadelphia uh, like this substitute teacher, little old lady and she goes it wasn't me, I don't even like the phillies, I'm a red socks fan, which caused more, more problem, right, but but again it showed there was the other situation.

06:20.009 --> 06:21.192
Did you watch in the um?

06:22.325 --> 06:25.640
us open tennis something about somebody stealing a hat or something.

06:25.700 --> 06:34.166
Yeah, a player gives his hat to this little boy and this dude he's this big CEO of some company takes it out of his hand.

06:34.320 --> 06:39.460
Well, he's I mean on the Internet and social media he's getting killed as well.

06:40.283 --> 06:43.947
So that's the beauty of social media If you can't shame somebody.

06:44.300 --> 06:44.870
If you can't shame somebody.

06:44.890 --> 06:47.769
If you can't shame somebody, it's the vigilante justice of the internet.

06:47.820 --> 06:53.413
Well, the good news for the kid was because this was on the Jumbotron and the announcers were doing it.

06:53.500 --> 06:55.829
I think was it the Marlins who were they playing.

06:55.900 --> 06:57.813
Anyway, I'm trying to remember where this was.

06:57.873 --> 06:58.537
It was in Philadelphia.

06:58.558 --> 06:58.940
Oh, it was in Philly.

06:59.180 --> 07:00.201
The game was in Philly, yeah.

07:00.401 --> 07:08.865
Anyway, the kid got like a basket of stuff, and then actually got to meet the players, whoever home run.

07:08.906 --> 07:09.306
he got.

07:09.326 --> 07:12.287
He got a signed bat, so the kid turned out okay.

07:12.307 --> 07:16.110
In fact, the rest of the story is that woman was actually connected to them.

07:16.130 --> 07:19.251
It was the little kid's mother and the whole thing was an act.

07:19.431 --> 07:22.293
No, of course, not Of course not.

07:23.053 --> 07:24.834
That would have been great, of course not.

07:24.854 --> 07:27.496
But it was good and your team did well yesterday.

07:27.676 --> 07:28.296
The Buccaneers.

07:28.336 --> 07:28.857
They did great.

07:28.877 --> 07:31.438
They played the Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta.

07:31.618 --> 07:39.674
You know the Bucs have been the winners of the NFC South now for the past five years and yet the Falcons have had our number for a while.

07:40.280 --> 07:42.762
It was an exciting game down to the last minute.

07:42.882 --> 07:48.605
A few missed field goals on both ends, a few missed field goals across the entire.

07:48.645 --> 07:48.825
Nfl.

07:48.846 --> 07:53.949
Yeah, that was kind of nuts yeah the Cleveland Browns right now are looking for a kicker, if you're interested.

07:54.049 --> 07:55.590
I thought they were looking for a quarterback.

07:55.850 --> 07:57.791
No, flacco actually played really well, did he?

07:57.811 --> 07:58.652
Yes, oh, that's great.

07:58.672 --> 08:00.012
Yeah, he did Good for him.

08:00.032 --> 08:00.753
Who did they play Cincinnati?

08:01.934 --> 08:02.854
Who did they play Cincinnati?

08:03.034 --> 08:05.016
Okay, yeah, actually there were a lot of good games.

08:05.176 --> 08:06.456
There was a lot of great games.

08:06.556 --> 08:08.858
I watched the Steelers-Jets game.

08:12.700 --> 08:18.846
So the Steelers featured Aaron Rodgers who was the quarterback of the Jets, and the Jets featured Justin Fields who was the backup quarterback for the Steelers, and it was another nail-biter.

08:19.861 --> 08:23.511
People thought the Steelers would roll the Jets, but it was only a two-point that.

08:23.531 --> 08:25.593
People thought the Steelers would roll the Jets, but it was only a two-point.

08:25.613 --> 08:27.515
That was an actual field goal that won the game at the end of it.

08:27.535 --> 08:28.676
And Rodgers had a good game.

08:28.756 --> 08:31.688
Yeah, Rodgers had Both teams played exceptionally well.

08:31.920 --> 08:35.369
I mean, what they did in the first week in the NFL is they had teams play against each other.

08:35.409 --> 08:44.694
There were grudge matches, like the Bills played the Ravens last night, but this one, the quarterback for the Jets used to be on Pittsburgh and vice versa and stuff.

08:44.714 --> 08:45.435
But I was just laughing.

08:45.500 --> 08:50.087
I was in an event this week, actually in Philadelphia, and this guy listens to our podcast.

08:50.180 --> 08:56.088
It comes up and he says to me it's just so fun listening, You're so well-rounded faith in sports.

08:56.461 --> 08:57.784
It's like, is that what it is?

08:58.205 --> 08:59.027
It's not around.

08:59.087 --> 08:59.970
That's an angle.

09:00.050 --> 09:00.832
Is that what it is?

09:00.860 --> 09:02.886
Yeah, there's two sides to you, because really, there's a lot there.

09:02.906 --> 09:03.688
There's a lot there.

09:03.728 --> 09:13.291
Okay, well, let's not forget, and sympathies to our good friend Deacon Kevin, but that Bills-Ravens game lived up to the hype.

09:13.440 --> 09:20.090
I think they were down by 10 points with two minutes left and the Bills roared back to win.

09:21.924 --> 09:25.192
If you have Josh Allen on your fantasy football team, you're doing well.

09:25.260 --> 09:28.470
He had almost 400 yards of passing and it was crazy.

09:28.600 --> 09:30.647
But it was a very, very fun day.

09:31.389 --> 09:31.770
In sports.

09:31.880 --> 09:36.032
Okay, the other thing that happened yesterday was the US Open men's tennis.

09:36.260 --> 09:37.284
Wait before we get forward.

09:37.304 --> 09:41.109
There was a game in Brazil, the Chargers beat the Chiefs, yeah, the Chiefs.

09:41.400 --> 09:44.889
The Chiefs are the only losing team in the AFC West.

09:45.250 --> 09:46.353
They have the worst record.

09:46.680 --> 09:47.955
Well, that's one game right.

09:47.976 --> 09:48.259
One game right.

09:48.279 --> 09:50.126
Yeah, they have the worst record in the NFL.

09:50.146 --> 09:50.849
They're tied for it.

09:50.900 --> 09:52.093
Sorry, everybody's having a field day.

09:52.114 --> 09:56.024
Yeah, and the Eagles the big thing although we're not going to be doing this is yes or no.

09:57.106 --> 10:01.151
Yes or no, will Taylor Swift do at the Super Bowl this year?

10:01.171 --> 10:02.132
Yes, okay, there you go.

10:02.312 --> 10:05.496
Yes, and if can, I throw this out.

10:06.040 --> 10:08.085
Well, sure, if the Bucks or the Broncos make it.

10:08.265 --> 10:09.087
We'll have a show.

10:09.127 --> 10:09.588
We'll have a show.

10:09.608 --> 10:10.330
We'll pick up a show.

10:10.350 --> 10:10.791
We'll pick up a show.

10:10.811 --> 10:11.793
That's right, we'll drop something.

10:12.521 --> 10:23.711
Us Open was yesterday, Men's final was yesterday and it was the third time that Sinner and Alcaraz played each other.

10:23.892 --> 10:24.933
Alcaraz won the French.

10:25.194 --> 10:29.506
Sinner won Wimbledon, Alcaraz won yesterday in four sets.

10:30.128 --> 10:31.671
But both really young guys.

10:31.791 --> 10:33.234
I think they're 22, 23.

10:33.274 --> 10:34.343
They are the future of tennis.

10:34.503 --> 10:35.065
A lot of fun.

10:35.726 --> 10:36.850
Both seem to be pretty good guys.

10:36.910 --> 10:40.786
On the women's side there was a player who took a break to have a baby.

10:41.767 --> 10:45.354
Well, there was a couple of things, yeah, and then there was a woman, and then she played well.

10:46.640 --> 10:48.520
I thought you were going to talk about the woman who took a break honestly with mental health.

10:49.161 --> 10:50.324
It's actually a pretty cool story.

10:50.545 --> 10:50.926
Who's this?

10:51.026 --> 10:51.568
Which one was this she?

10:51.588 --> 10:54.406
was the one in the finals, Amanda.

10:54.486 --> 10:57.903
I can't remember her last name, Samanilov or something like that American girl.

10:58.804 --> 11:09.576
Her father was a coach, which just the stress I mean she won the championship as a junior player, just phenomenal, up-and-coming person but the stress of that world.

11:10.036 --> 11:12.659
And then her father passed and her world just kind of caved in.

11:12.680 --> 11:12.940
Collapsed.

11:12.960 --> 11:16.887
yeah and she stopped playing for almost two years and then just came back this year.

11:16.940 --> 11:22.145
But the cool thing about this was she made it to the championship in Wimbledon and lost love.

11:22.205 --> 11:24.671
Love Didn't win an entire and just cried the whole time.

11:24.731 --> 11:25.933
I mean, she was just oh gosh.

11:28.420 --> 11:28.582
And then.

11:28.622 --> 11:32.362
So she made it back in the semis to play that same woman that beat her, love, love, and she beat her and made it to the finals.

11:32.722 --> 11:33.342
Oh, that's kind of cool.

11:33.362 --> 11:34.063
She lost in the finals.

11:34.083 --> 11:34.924
Yeah, yeah, that's great.

11:35.004 --> 11:38.807
It's a good story and you were saying something about Le.

11:40.009 --> 11:45.734
The Athletic, which is a big time sports, page writing thing.

11:45.774 --> 11:50.058
Magazine right Magazine books they do a lot of stuff and they have really actually very good.

11:50.538 --> 11:51.339
They have very good journalism.

11:51.359 --> 11:52.119
That's what I like about the Athletic.

11:52.139 --> 11:55.149
Yeah, that's really true, it's not just like clickbait.

11:55.501 --> 11:56.847
They really write very good articles.

11:56.900 --> 11:59.770
So they came out with the Basketball 100.

12:00.340 --> 12:03.063
It was the 100 top players in basketball.

12:03.083 --> 12:03.804
Did LeBron make it?

12:04.184 --> 12:05.966
He barely made it, did he?

12:05.986 --> 12:06.586
He just?

12:06.606 --> 12:07.167
squeaked in there.

12:07.187 --> 12:13.974
So the top five and that was some debate, among things were Michael Jordan, number one, LeBron James, number two.

12:13.994 --> 12:14.874
Oh, that's interesting.

12:14.975 --> 12:15.956
Magic Jordan.

12:16.176 --> 12:17.377
Number three Magic Johnson.

12:19.544 --> 12:21.212
Magic Johnson as well.

12:21.493 --> 12:22.860
No, no, sorry, it was Kobe Kobe.

12:23.120 --> 12:24.121
Kobe was number three.

12:24.742 --> 12:25.182
Johnson.

12:25.202 --> 12:25.863
No, no, sorry, it was Kobe.

12:25.883 --> 12:26.583
Kobe was number three.

12:26.603 --> 12:28.745
Johnson was number four and then Kareem Kareem Abdul-Jabbar number five.

12:28.865 --> 12:30.027
I think Wilt made six.

12:30.227 --> 12:31.888
Three of the top five are Lakers.

12:32.909 --> 12:33.890
That is a true statement.

12:34.311 --> 12:35.252
No, you know who was number six.

12:35.292 --> 12:35.952
It was Bill Russell.

12:36.092 --> 12:38.274
Okay, wasn't he a Laker and a Celtic?

12:38.835 --> 12:39.275
I don't know.

12:39.295 --> 12:50.376
I don't know LeBron's number two.

12:50.750 --> 12:53.938
I think most people would say those are the top three.

12:55.562 --> 12:56.183
Yeah, that's probably.

12:56.431 --> 13:00.410
I mean, some might argue, Russell its recency bites.

13:01.213 --> 13:02.298
The podcast was interesting.

13:02.751 --> 13:10.459
They said with Russell he was an important part of that team, but he wasn't the guy on that team.

13:11.372 --> 13:15.070
He wasn't the guy that you want the ball in his hands.

13:15.170 --> 13:26.235
In the last second kind of thing, yeah, chamberlain was up there too, but in terms of yeah, in terms of, and then they had a very interesting conversation.

13:26.255 --> 13:26.938
What about Chambers?

13:27.290 --> 13:30.577
Tom Chambers, I don't know, maybe John Paxson?

13:30.637 --> 13:31.672
I think he should have been up there.

13:31.773 --> 13:32.496
He should have been up there.

13:33.712 --> 13:49.822
So the Jordan LeBron debate if you want to check it out, it was actually one of the most balanced podcast debates I've heard on this, without people going crazy one side or the other, and obviously the main author was saying it's Jordan Because it is.

13:50.250 --> 13:52.274
And he said about LeBron.

13:52.294 --> 13:57.684
He said the one thing you could say about LeBron is that it's worth the conversation of it.

13:57.730 --> 13:59.277
Now, lebron still isn't finished.

13:59.931 --> 14:18.941
It's hard to beat Michael's six rings, and yet it's easy to forget the fact that Michael only went to the finals six times and LeBron went eight times in a row, with an obviously undermanned team compared to an obviously overpowered team like the Golden State Warriors.

14:19.771 --> 14:22.940
And so I think there's always good things to talk about there.

14:22.960 --> 14:23.241
Good debate.

14:24.454 --> 14:25.558
Wait, you're not even debating.

14:25.610 --> 14:30.696
You're just doing that little smug like well, I know you're wrong, because well, all right, oh, let's play.

14:30.856 --> 14:36.750
Oh gee, really, maybe it is, maybe it is Le.

14:36.811 --> 14:37.732
Well, all right, oh, let's play.

14:37.752 --> 14:39.154
Oh gee, really, Maybe it is, Maybe it is LeBron, gee you've convinced me.

14:39.174 --> 14:42.399
Sister Mary Beth, if you'd like to, we'll let her weigh in.

14:42.579 --> 14:42.859
Okay.

14:42.920 --> 14:44.001
Has she ever emailed us?

14:44.542 --> 14:45.083
Does she have?

14:45.443 --> 14:45.704
Email?

14:45.724 --> 14:46.184
Probably not.

14:46.405 --> 14:46.986
I don't know if she does.

14:48.911 --> 14:49.412
We'll let Sister.

14:49.432 --> 14:50.613
She probably can't even listen to podcasts.

14:50.633 --> 14:53.135
Sister Mary Beth will be the arbiter of this and we'll figure it out.

14:53.336 --> 14:54.557
That's right, exactly so.

14:55.298 --> 14:58.941
But speaking of LeBron, he's still playing.

14:59.822 --> 15:00.883
I'm excited he's coming.

15:00.943 --> 15:02.565
You know the Lakers are coming to Cleveland.

15:02.585 --> 15:03.846
Nba is about to start.

15:03.906 --> 15:04.687
I'm so excited.

15:04.910 --> 15:05.955
Yeah, so preseason starts when.

15:06.711 --> 15:13.841
October early October and then, late October, we kick into what hopefully will be a very exciting season of basketball.

15:14.222 --> 15:14.923
We can only hope.

15:15.710 --> 15:17.316
We can only hope, and not a lot happened in college football.

15:17.356 --> 15:18.259
Notre Dame didn't play.

15:18.350 --> 15:21.599
They play Texas A&M next week, which is a big game Saturday night.

15:21.619 --> 15:22.482
That's a really big game.

15:22.610 --> 15:27.923
Only one top two top 20 teams played this week Michigan against Oklahoma and I think Oklahoma won.

15:28.170 --> 15:30.017
So they lined up all the good stuff.

15:30.037 --> 15:30.711
Yeah, right.

15:30.791 --> 15:33.758
First week out of the gate and now we get back to normal life.

15:34.099 --> 15:35.763
Sounds good, and that's sports.

15:41.713 --> 15:43.078
Well, that dead space was nice.

15:43.310 --> 15:44.616
Well, I'm pulling it up.

15:44.750 --> 15:45.492
So do we have a?

15:45.552 --> 15:46.556
We do have a reading.

15:46.696 --> 15:47.458
Okay, there we go.

15:47.980 --> 15:50.943
Yes, franciscan University's Homecoming.

15:51.668 --> 15:57.420
Oh good, september 26th through the 28th You're invited to come to campus for a fun weekend.

15:57.930 --> 16:01.761
There will be tours of the renovated Christ the King Chapel.

16:03.232 --> 16:04.756
Is the courtyard going to be done by then?

16:05.017 --> 16:06.982
Yes, it should be oh nice, that'll be great.

16:07.311 --> 16:10.878
The St Francis Festival An alumni awards banquet.

16:11.752 --> 16:12.556
Am I getting an award?

16:13.771 --> 16:14.816
There goes the surprise.

16:15.492 --> 16:19.216
Oh, I never get awards, athletic Games and more.

16:19.490 --> 16:25.782
Also, if you graduated from Franciscan in a class year ending in a zero or a five.

16:26.063 --> 16:26.784
We didn't no.

16:27.470 --> 16:29.819
We have a special reunion for you.

16:29.970 --> 16:31.516
Come for one event or the whole weekend.

16:31.556 --> 16:38.980
We'd love to see you Learn more at alumnifranciscanedu.

16:39.481 --> 16:43.287
That's alumnifranciscanedu.

16:43.747 --> 16:45.992
You think I'd get the buttons right by now, do you know something?

16:46.152 --> 16:50.122
I was going to say something about that, about what Homecoming?

16:50.250 --> 16:51.633
No, you're not getting the buttons right.

16:52.295 --> 16:56.564
And yet, if it was up to me, we would not have any music.

16:57.111 --> 16:58.617
It would just be us sitting here.

16:59.432 --> 17:02.716
We wouldn't have cameras, we would just sit here and talk.

17:02.790 --> 17:05.760
Isn't that what we're going to do now, after the podcast is done?

17:05.910 --> 17:07.938
No cameras, no recordings, no mics, just beer.

17:08.692 --> 17:09.730
Oh, that's fine that works fine.

17:09.730 --> 17:10.111
Yeah, that works out.

17:10.131 --> 17:11.755
We're just not going to film it Exactly, okay.

17:11.775 --> 17:14.622
So one of the things that Bob and I were talking about, oh, I do want to clarify something about it.

17:15.332 --> 17:19.597
I just lamented that I've never won an award and I'm not an award-winning person.

17:19.657 --> 17:27.895
That's true, but I did win an award.

17:27.916 --> 17:28.496
What was that?

17:28.616 --> 17:29.076
At Franciscan.

17:29.116 --> 17:29.577
What was that?

17:29.597 --> 17:30.337
It was a kind back to me.

17:30.377 --> 17:33.600
In fact, that was the thing that I marked about the highlight of the last five years.

17:34.060 --> 17:36.221
Well no, this was like in the mid-1990s.

17:36.302 --> 17:37.623
I meant last 20 years.

17:38.843 --> 17:42.046
No, I've actually not won any award being here at Franciscan.

17:42.426 --> 17:44.107
Is there a greatest podcaster award?

17:44.127 --> 17:46.895
Yeah, it's coming, it's coming, alan Shrek's going to win it.

17:47.650 --> 17:49.894
You keep on ruining my stories.

17:50.355 --> 17:53.641
Okay, so we're thinking about, okay, so, the last five years.

17:53.701 --> 17:56.767
We started this in the fall of 2020.

17:57.370 --> 18:01.736
So it's not five full years and we were thinking about some of the significant events that happened.

18:01.776 --> 18:03.498
So what do you think?

18:03.759 --> 18:08.325
One of the movies that we've probably talked about the most in the last five years the most.

18:08.365 --> 18:11.554
Yeah, now wait, was it a movie that came out in the last five years?

18:11.595 --> 18:12.657
Yeah, I think so.

18:12.957 --> 18:15.483
I think so I think so, or this wasn't like Star Wars or something.

18:15.503 --> 18:15.883
Oh, no, no, no, no.

18:15.904 --> 18:21.741
Okay, a movie that we talked about the most Stop stop.

18:21.781 --> 18:24.477
Black Widow yes, isn't that an amazing movie?

18:25.870 --> 18:31.454
I went back on my notes and the number of times that Black Widow when you say we talked about it.

18:31.674 --> 18:35.677
I think a better statement is that you brought up Black Widow.

18:35.837 --> 18:37.018
You were obsessed with that movie.

18:37.098 --> 18:40.560
Obsessed is such a strong word that fits.

18:40.720 --> 18:41.881
It absolutely fits.

18:41.941 --> 18:42.381
What's her name?

18:42.461 --> 18:43.542
Florence Pugh.

18:43.702 --> 18:44.042
Pugh.

18:44.122 --> 18:46.624
Yeah Well, talk about amazing actress.

18:46.804 --> 18:50.466
I mean of course Phenomenal, of course Gifted.

18:51.807 --> 18:52.488
You're not obsessed.

18:53.390 --> 18:53.691
No, it was funny.

18:53.711 --> 18:53.812
Funny.

18:53.832 --> 18:55.338
So that was something else, but there was another.

18:57.696 --> 19:00.102
It was in the arts that we talked about a great deal.

19:00.211 --> 19:07.457
It seems like the obsessions were always on me yeah, hamilton yes, exactly, yeah, yeah, yeah.

19:07.979 --> 19:14.576
So we did, we talked about both of those you do kind of sink your teeth into something media wise and you hold on.

19:15.031 --> 19:18.982
You'll watch it numerous times Wonder Woman, there you go right.

19:19.251 --> 19:20.195
You might have mentioned that.

19:20.670 --> 19:23.439
You went from Gal Gadot to Florence Pugh.

19:23.559 --> 19:24.081
You know what?

19:24.411 --> 19:27.641
What if we did a film Black Widow meets Hamilton?

19:28.171 --> 19:30.219
Tell me, that wouldn't be a winner.

19:31.073 --> 19:31.876
That would be huge.

19:32.016 --> 19:39.060
Okay, well, for years, do you have a movie that kind of resonated or like kind of a big movie over the past five years?

19:39.140 --> 19:39.501
That's it.

19:39.622 --> 19:41.793
If you have to go search it, no, no, I'm just trying to.

19:41.873 --> 19:43.176
I was looking up something else.

19:43.556 --> 19:50.721
Um, I would say, okay, I do, I do have to search it, but because it's, it's something, I found that I thought oh my gosh, that's great.

19:51.011 --> 19:51.594
Um, I well, I like top gun.

19:51.614 --> 19:53.622
Oh sure, that was a that's great.

19:53.662 --> 19:57.497
Well, I like Top Gun, oh sure, that was a really big one.

19:57.650 --> 20:01.727
I like Dune, but we didn't talk much about it because you don't like good movies.

20:01.969 --> 20:02.110
Yeah.

20:02.931 --> 20:04.899
The Spider-Man cartoon movie was awesome.

20:05.432 --> 20:06.215
I've yet to see it.

20:06.590 --> 20:08.518
Yeah, you see, this is why we didn't get to it too much.

20:08.730 --> 20:15.082
So we did witness the decline of Marvel during our time, yes, but what was the movie that we went to together?

20:15.563 --> 20:16.384
We went to a few of them.

20:17.570 --> 20:22.530
But we were going to podcast on our way there, that's true, I don't remember what it was.

20:22.550 --> 20:23.474
I don't remember what it was either.

20:23.494 --> 20:26.418
I don't remember it wasn't Top Gun, was it?

20:27.271 --> 20:28.355
Maybe it was actually.

20:28.395 --> 20:28.896
Maybe it was.

20:29.057 --> 20:29.980
I think that actually was.

20:30.170 --> 20:30.751
That was a really fun one.

20:30.771 --> 20:31.352
That was a really fun one.

20:31.372 --> 20:32.033
We ended up having a good time.

20:32.053 --> 20:34.035
That was kind of when movies started to come back.

20:34.075 --> 20:34.336
Yeah.

20:34.676 --> 20:40.845
You know, the Mission Impossible movies were other ones that were like you know, because you had 2020 and then you had a writer's strike.

20:41.245 --> 20:58.350
Yeah no-transcript.

20:58.470 --> 21:00.323
It was like July 4th, I think 2020.

21:00.343 --> 21:00.746
Something like that.

21:00.766 --> 21:04.036
It was in the middle of COVID and nobody was supposed to gather and you had like 20 people.

21:04.998 --> 21:07.296
We were all singing and we were social distancing.

21:14.790 --> 21:15.857
Right the law to the most perfect degree.

21:15.937 --> 21:16.602
You know there's a movie.

21:16.622 --> 21:17.145
Do you ever see Encanto?

21:17.165 --> 21:17.890
I know you don't have children no.

21:18.971 --> 21:20.236
It's a Disney cartoon.

21:20.276 --> 21:21.079
I'm familiar with it.

21:21.954 --> 21:22.930
It's such a great movie.

21:22.990 --> 21:28.017
It came out during COVID and I think it was not, so it just went right to streaming.

21:28.710 --> 21:34.298
But Lin-Manuel, who wrote Hamilton, wrote the music for Encanto and it's one of the best Disney films ever.

21:34.639 --> 21:36.201
Family friendly I'll have to watch it.

21:36.301 --> 21:38.624
Awesome, Like great music, incredible music.

21:38.704 --> 21:43.361
I'll have to watch it, yeah so yeah, we kind of missed some of those things, but right.

21:43.530 --> 21:47.962
So great, great, great movies that happened in our world over the last several years.

21:48.350 --> 21:52.621
Here was one of the events that we spent quite a bit of time talking about.

21:53.042 --> 21:54.205
The solar eclipse.

21:54.566 --> 21:56.912
Oh yes, right, that was a lot of fun.

21:57.053 --> 21:57.293
It was.

21:57.353 --> 21:58.938
I was just going to say it was a lot of fun.

21:58.998 --> 21:59.700
That was a great time.

22:00.790 --> 22:05.139
Yeah, we weren't quite in the path of the total eclipse.

22:05.921 --> 22:08.391
I had to drive an hour or so, but you did go.

22:08.451 --> 22:08.872
Oh, I did.

22:08.892 --> 22:09.994
Yeah, I and my family.

22:10.014 --> 22:12.317
Because I stayed with my students that was stupid.

22:13.359 --> 22:16.764
You know something, if I could play it again, I probably still would have stayed, because it was really.

22:16.784 --> 22:17.966
We had a lot of fun on campus.

22:18.030 --> 22:24.143
If we could have done it again, we would have gotten buses and we would have gone to an hour away.

22:24.710 --> 22:28.032
There were people that like flew oh absolutely, they're already there's.

22:28.052 --> 22:29.576
the next one is in like 2029 or something like that.

22:29.596 --> 22:29.957
Wait, is that soon?

22:29.977 --> 22:31.461
In like 2029 or something like that.

22:31.501 --> 22:32.023
Wait, it's that soon.

22:32.063 --> 22:34.610
I thought this only happens like once every million years or something.

22:34.630 --> 22:36.308
That's what they say, just to keep people interested in it.

22:36.328 --> 22:40.017
Yeah, it's like when announcers are like this is the greatest football player ever.

22:41.073 --> 22:42.216
It's like they just got drafted.

22:42.577 --> 22:42.838
Izzy.

22:43.179 --> 22:43.640
Exactly.

22:43.861 --> 22:44.081
Izzy.

22:46.053 --> 22:48.592
Okay, anything else that comes to your mind, we'll do some other things.

22:48.872 --> 22:53.999
I hope you saw that video.

22:54.019 --> 22:54.860
This was dramatic.

22:54.901 --> 22:56.743
He just dramatically took his glasses off.

22:56.803 --> 22:57.544
It was kind of sad.

22:57.584 --> 22:58.586
Actually, it was kind of sad.

22:59.091 --> 23:04.023
I look back the number of times that we talked about shootings and situations like that.

23:04.331 --> 23:05.133
It was just.

23:05.153 --> 23:11.094
I mean, I didn't count each one of them, but it's just kind of awful that that's a part of it Every few months.

23:11.174 --> 23:13.748
It feels like we're talking about some horrible event.

23:14.110 --> 23:15.576
Yeah, it could be shooting or something else.

23:15.717 --> 23:25.523
Yeah, we obviously spent a lot of time with the war in Ukraine and we shared that whole fundraising thing that the university did for the refugees in Goming.

23:25.690 --> 23:28.680
There is a quarter of a million dollars in about 10 days, wow.

23:29.190 --> 23:31.293
And we brought in, I think, 45 families there.

23:31.313 --> 23:34.336
So that was I mean in the midst of a really, really struggle.

23:34.356 --> 23:35.277
That was a great blessing.

23:35.738 --> 23:40.844
And then I was also reflecting on the situation in the Holy Land, in Gaza, the attack in Israel.

23:41.245 --> 23:42.246
We had those students there.

23:43.070 --> 23:48.621
Yeah, that's right, we had 31 students there and there was not a lot of sleep there for about 48 hours until we got them all out.

23:49.270 --> 23:50.050
It's been some crazy things that have happened.

23:49.979 --> 23:55.998
There was an election yeah, it's been some crazy things that have happened there was an election.

23:56.278 --> 23:57.000
Did we talk about that?

23:57.020 --> 23:58.803
Did we happen to miss that one?

24:00.691 --> 24:01.573
Was there just one.

24:01.593 --> 24:03.297
There was just one presidential election.

24:04.419 --> 24:05.362
That happened right.

24:07.030 --> 24:07.191
Well, no.

24:07.211 --> 24:09.919
Because by the end of 2020, it already.

24:10.470 --> 24:12.539
No, the election would have been the fall of 2020.

24:12.910 --> 24:15.056
So that means we started talking about that.

24:15.297 --> 24:16.139
Yeah, we did actually.

24:16.701 --> 24:17.102
Yeah, we did.

24:19.153 --> 24:23.902
That's right, because that was when Biden got it, and then that was craziness.

24:24.803 --> 24:25.424
Yeah, those are two.

24:26.833 --> 24:30.242
Benghazi, all the insanity yeah oh, that's right, that's right, yeah, yeah.

24:30.491 --> 24:33.922
And then the most recent one, which was just fantastic.

24:34.512 --> 24:38.151
This is why we were here to be able to we were here to help you through those things Right.

24:38.171 --> 24:40.359
The Atlantic has nothing over on us.

24:40.570 --> 24:45.783
Maybe that's really why the podcast was here, because we just wanted to give you hope during the Biden era.

24:45.870 --> 24:46.855
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

24:47.734 --> 24:52.014
Just to cover that time those four years To bridge the gap we started.

24:52.034 --> 24:53.097
And then Biden took over.

24:53.177 --> 24:55.502
Biden's gone and it's going to be okay now.

24:57.414 --> 25:06.719
Yeah, other people are saying keep going, for the love of all that is good and holy, don't stop now, now, so we'll just bring back next week.

25:06.810 --> 25:09.780
Let me see that next week we can talk about some other things.

25:09.950 --> 25:11.035
We did the fruits of the spirit.

25:11.110 --> 25:13.297
We did the capital sins, which was interesting.

25:13.317 --> 25:16.970
Other things we did the Fruits of the Spirit, we did the Capital Sins, which was interesting.

25:19.070 --> 25:23.150
Yeah, One of the major events was obviously we were able to walk people through a new election of a pope, which was really fascinating, really fun and interesting, and the Eucharistic Congress.

25:23.310 --> 25:25.138
And you got to meet the previous pope.

25:25.290 --> 25:26.033
I did, I did.

25:26.174 --> 25:31.219
I had Coke with him breakfast you know, yeah right, just hanging out Flapjacks, flapjacks.

25:34.650 --> 25:35.418
Kick soccer ball around a little bit.

25:35.438 --> 25:36.205
Yeah, yeah, yeah, popo's Flapjacks.

25:36.225 --> 25:36.690
So we'll talk more next.

25:36.850 --> 25:45.056
And again, if people have some memories that you want us to reflect on or something like that, we'd be happy to and thank you for those of you that are sending in emails and I know I say we'll go over emails.

25:45.076 --> 25:47.612
But we don't, but we will, so why?

25:47.652 --> 25:50.917
should we end, we will finally go over the emails.

25:50.937 --> 25:55.385
But thank you for all of those who are shooting us emails of well-wishings and good memories.

25:55.570 --> 25:57.598
You can send those to hopeatfranciscanedu.

25:57.830 --> 25:58.191
Somebody.

25:58.732 --> 26:02.780
I was at an event on Saturday night and this couple was there and they said so you guys are going to stop?

26:02.800 --> 26:04.624
They said we get it, we're just really appreciative.

26:08.453 --> 26:10.095
And they said no, it takes time.

26:10.135 --> 26:11.196
And they said but they'll be there.

26:11.416 --> 26:15.599
If you want to go listen to them again, you are welcome to.26:16.740 --> 26:18.342

You are absolutely welcome to.26:18.682 --> 26:23.947

Well, the other big news this weekend was we have two new saints we do In the Catholic Church.26:24.007 --> 26:24.307

We do.26:25.270 --> 26:25.932

That's really great it is.26:25.952 --> 26:28.100

If you haven't heard, gee what, tell me.26:28.610 --> 26:29.652

Let me tell you about them.26:30.133 --> 26:30.695

So let me.26:31.216 --> 26:34.723

Yeah, carlo, st Carlo Acutis and his parents were there.26:40.030 --> 26:42.180

I wonder how often that's happened that the parents are there, I can't imagine, and um very rarely.26:42.200 --> 26:43.085

And then his little brother read, did you?26:43.105 --> 26:43.567

see his little brother.26:43.587 --> 26:44.510

I didn't see that, no.26:44.911 --> 26:46.253

Okay, um, keep going.26:46.433 --> 26:54.324

All right, and uh, Pierre Giorgio Frassati, whose family was there His little brother or Ralphie, from that Christmas story that is fantastic.26:54.384 --> 26:55.266

Yeah, exactly.26:55.650 --> 26:56.675

Boy he's young.26:56.990 --> 26:59.298

Yeah, they actually, they may not have even ever met.26:59.459 --> 27:00.515

Okay, it's an interesting.27:00.596 --> 27:01.924

I don't know exactly what the story is.27:01.984 --> 27:02.930

We don't know what's going on there.27:04.775 --> 27:09.315

But yeah, it was a really beautiful, beautiful weekend, but we were talking ahead of time.27:09.335 --> 27:12.033

I have some friends Just real quick Like only.27:15.627 --> 27:16.589

It was like at 3 am.27:16.689 --> 27:16.909

Yes.27:17.110 --> 27:20.796

Yeah, they were up All night, all night long, getting so excited.27:20.856 --> 27:21.417

I wasn't there.27:21.697 --> 27:27.575

Oh yeah, I was going to say I mean, it was great they had all kinds of food and celebration.27:27.635 --> 27:28.437

It was great, it is.27:29.208 --> 27:30.092

It is really amazing.27:30.685 --> 27:57.632

I have a number of friends who have a longtime devotion to Pier Giorgio Farsotti and they couldn't help but feel a little overshadowed by this new whippersnapper, by this kid and sneakers some of the conversations reminded me of like the toy story thing, of like Woody complaining about Buzz like oh, you're a spaceman and I'm a cowboy yeah but I did I did feel a little like when I heard they were combining.27:57.692 --> 28:11.360

So, before Pope Francis passed away, there was going to be a feast, there was going to be a celebration of Carlo, who was going to be on the Jubilee for Youth Day, and lots of people had trips and pilgrimage lined up, and then when?28:11.380 --> 28:12.284

Leo, I raised my hand on that.28:12.344 --> 28:18.736

Yeah, and then Leo came and he pushed it back to the same day as for Saudis.28:18.776 --> 28:22.873

So people got to go to the Jubilee of Youth and there was no canonization.28:23.114 --> 28:26.114

And then with Frassati they combined it.28:26.174 --> 28:30.453

But you can say, at least here in the States, like everybody's talking about Carlo.28:30.565 --> 28:32.433

Yeah, sure it's funny.28:32.525 --> 28:41.777

I was thinking about we talked a little bit before and you were saying that he didn't get as much love, but I felt that way when John XXIII and John Paul were canonized together.28:41.858 --> 28:43.624

Obviously, we all love John Paul.28:43.664 --> 28:44.286

I love John Paul.28:46.111 --> 28:51.771

It's possible to say we wouldn't be here right now if it wasn't for John Paul, but I really love John XXIII as well.28:51.832 --> 28:52.814

Every time I go to Rome.28:52.995 --> 28:53.536

I mentioned this.28:53.556 --> 29:05.621

I'm sure, every time I go to Rome, go to the St Peter's Prayer Rosary in front of St John Paul excuse me, John XXIII and just say thank you, right, thank you for his love for the church and his dedication to the church and his opening up the windows of the church.29:05.701 --> 29:05.961

Yeah.29:06.482 --> 29:06.802

But yeah.29:07.285 --> 29:13.487

And you could say there wouldn't be a John Paul II if it were not for John XXIII, and that's probably why the good reason.29:13.507 --> 29:14.429

In terms of ministry.29:14.449 --> 29:18.736

We're not talking about existence Right, right, right and they had very different, you know some yeah anyway.29:19.337 --> 29:39.293

So it was beautiful, but you're right, I just read a little bit more about Akutis and Frassati during it and just one of the things I shared with the students yesterday was and we use the word normal almost like you're not radical, you know, but they were just normal guys, you know.29:40.146 --> 29:47.570

They loved the Lord with all their heart and they did hiking and they did sports and they did internet and they did I guess he played Halo.29:47.665 --> 29:54.832

There was a meme that was going around Some guy that said I probably shouldn't have smack talked that kid, you know, in 2000.29:55.485 --> 29:56.630

So, but I told this.29:56.845 --> 29:59.834

By the way, the video game is called Halo and the.29:59.874 --> 30:03.212

Catholic app is called Hollow, just to throw that out there.30:03.285 --> 30:04.949

I've not played Halo much.30:05.029 --> 30:05.892

It's okay, it's okay.30:05.912 --> 30:07.436

I just, you know, wanted to make it clear.30:07.656 --> 30:16.811

But yeah, so I was telling the students, just you know, what was extraordinary about them was their faithfulness, but they were normal.30:16.831 --> 30:17.532

This is one of the things that.30:17.552 --> 30:18.453

Arthur Briggs talks about.30:18.473 --> 30:27.733

He said what we need is Catholics that are radically sold out for the faith, that are normal, that are relatable, that can engage people, and these were two examples of saints that did that.30:28.505 --> 30:30.212

The homily is worth looking at.30:30.305 --> 30:31.591

It's on the Vatican website.30:31.865 --> 30:47.153

I'm so impressed with Pope Leo's well speaking but writing you know like, and I think he just really writes in a simple, clear way, gets right to the point of things and just some quotes of his homily.30:47.173 --> 30:50.350

That I thought was great, the whole theme of his homily, and it was very brief.30:50.571 --> 30:53.538

You know I thought it would be a lot longer but it was very brief.31:07.705 --> 31:12.852

And the invitation was not only to look at these saints who, in their youth, are canonized, but also that, really, when you look at all the saints, many of their conversions happened when they were young.31:12.873 --> 31:31.457

He mentioned St Francis of Assisi in that and how it was in his youth that he was able to give himself over, and he said sometimes we portray them as great figures, forgetting that for them it all began that when, while still young, they said yes to God and gave themselves to him completely, keeping nothing for themselves.31:32.025 --> 31:39.878

St Augustine recounts that in the torturous and tangled knot of his life, a voice deep within him said I want you.31:40.379 --> 31:45.795

God gave him a new direction, a new path, a new reason in which nothing of his life was lost.31:46.556 --> 31:50.431

And, yeah, that beautiful image and focus.31:50.451 --> 31:54.346

He talked about pure Giorgio, how he's a beacon for lay spirituality.31:54.987 --> 32:05.220

I mean, here's just a man who was active with his friends and active in business and devoted his free time and devoted his extra money to the care of the poor.32:05.400 --> 32:07.470

It was interesting, he was also politically active.32:07.811 --> 32:27.089

Yeah, catholic action that actually delayed his canonization a little bit Really, yeah, if you read a little bit, one of the things I thought was interesting about Akutis was that it was a priest who asked him to help with a project online, and that was really with the impetus that began his research and his website on Eucharistic miracles.32:27.230 --> 32:29.886

So it was just this priest saying you know, I need to help with something.32:29.926 --> 32:37.095

And this relationship that he developed with this priest that ultimately led to I mean in many ways him being much more known than anyone else would have known.32:43.545 --> 32:45.670

Absolutely yeah, that ministry that he did, which was again such a gift of something that you know.32:45.691 --> 32:48.926

How can young people, how can intergenerational ministry help the church Well it's.32:49.027 --> 32:51.814

I have this idea and a young person says well, I can help do that.32:51.835 --> 32:54.011

I know how to do that you know in a different way.32:54.425 --> 32:57.727

You know, carlo has so many great quotes which he quoted.32:57.767 --> 33:01.890

Some of them, carlo, it says used to say in front of the sun you get a tan.33:02.271 --> 33:03.952

In front of the Eucharist, you become a saint.33:04.692 --> 33:08.255

Another one is sadness is looking at yourself, happiness is looking at God.33:08.335 --> 33:11.457

Conversion is nothing more than shifting your gaze from below to above.33:11.897 --> 33:19.183

A simple movement of the eyes is enough and this is the last quote I want to share that the only thing we have to fear is sin.33:23.885 --> 33:28.444

People are so concerned with the beauty of their bodies and do not care of the beauty of their souls, that's just I mean for like a 14-year-old writing it 13 and 14-year-old writing it.33:28.464 --> 33:30.768

That's just he didn't quote it here.33:30.808 --> 33:36.357

But my favorite is that he said everybody comes into this life as originals and many leave as photocopies.33:36.397 --> 33:36.897

Yeah, yeah.33:36.998 --> 33:46.697

You know that he saw, as did Frassati, as did all the saints, that giving yourself fully to the Lord doesn't diminish you, but it's a new creation.33:46.805 --> 33:55.868

It actually is the fullness of who you are made to be, and I think you know those of us who have faith understand that, and I think those that don't.33:56.569 --> 33:57.069

That's always.33:57.410 --> 34:04.460

I think that's always one of the fears on the threshold of a conversion, which is well, if I give my life to Jesus he's going to ruin my life.34:06.648 --> 34:14.660

Even in whenever Jesus showed up in a synagogue, somebody who was possessed would cry out something like have you come to destroy us?34:15.325 --> 34:25.943

And I think the sin in our life, whenever we have an encounter with Jesus, shouts out have you come to destroy us?34:25.838 --> 34:28.952

Like if I give myself to you, it's going to destroy me, but it's really just going to destroy the things that are not of ourselves, that are not of the love of God.34:28.972 --> 34:30.155

They're ultimately free, right?34:30.336 --> 34:30.516

Yeah?34:30.705 --> 34:40.080

Yeah, you were saying, and Holy Father was saying, that they were both young and both of our stories is an encounter with the Lord when we were young, that the Lord did great things.34:40.645 --> 34:43.395

With that being said, that there are stories as well of people.34:43.725 --> 34:47.545

I don't want somebody to say, well, you know, they're older, they didn't, they missed all this grace.34:47.645 --> 34:50.695

But the scripture always talks about the person who comes in at the last minute.34:50.795 --> 34:52.932

Yeah, that receives all sorts of ages.34:52.992 --> 34:53.153

Yeah.34:53.453 --> 35:00.865

And that just speaks to the majesty of the Lord, that he meets us where we are, that there's this moment of grace, that our hearts are open to him and we ultimately say yes, and.35:00.906 --> 35:09.974

I think that's what all the saints the very beginning we were talking about before we got on the podcast about that yes, what is a similarity amongst all the saints?35:10.946 --> 35:17.190

They all said, yes, they were also all sinners and they worked through that and they were opened up to the Lord's mercy and the Lord did great things in their life.35:17.371 --> 35:20.457

So we've got two young people that said yes to that.35:20.497 --> 35:21.859

It's kind of fun to be able to celebrate that.35:22.305 --> 35:26.953

Akudas, his feast day is October 12th and Frassati, do you know when his is?35:27.013 --> 35:29.557

I do not, july 4th, yeah.35:29.737 --> 35:30.158

He loved America.35:30.178 --> 35:30.739

This is our independence day.35:30.759 --> 35:31.660

He loved America.35:33.085 --> 35:34.467

Are those the days of their passing?35:34.828 --> 35:35.809

It is Okay.35:35.909 --> 35:37.190

That's the usual thing, right yeah?35:37.451 --> 35:37.671

Yeah.35:37.891 --> 35:39.393

So let's just pray.35:39.553 --> 35:43.899

Lord, we thank you for the blessing of two new saints who said yes to you.35:43.999 --> 35:45.961

We pray for the grace to say yes.35:46.161 --> 35:53.098

We pray for the individual today who is struggling most, who doesn't believe in you, doesn't believe in your faithfulness, in your mercy.35:53.745 --> 35:56.952

Allow them, allow us the grace of being able to say yes.35:57.293 --> 35:59.518

May the Lord bless us, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.36:00.828 --> 36:03.836

Saints Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati.36:04.766 --> 36:09.654
