Pillow Fight!

Pillow Fight!

There’s nothing like the NBA and NHL Finals… unless you count professional pillow fighting.

In this episode, Father Dave and Deacon Bob celebrate the end of the sports season with a rundown of the Stanley Cup, the NBA Finals, and the rise of summer’s strangest athletic events, including the Pillow Fighting Championship (yes, it’s real).

But the heart of the episode is hope—the kind that doesn’t come from scores or summer plans, but from Christ. They reflect on the Eucharist, the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts, and the graces poured out at recent conferences at Franciscan and Notre Dame. From youth ministry to marriage milestones, they explore what it means to trust God with both our spiritual and everyday needs.

Naturally, they go off on tangents, from hotel bathrobes and awkward airline announcements to anniversary shoutouts and the idea of launching a Franciscan pillow-fighting team (tentative name: the Franciscan Feathers).

Highlighted Sections

(00:00) Bathrobes, Notre Dame, and the $175 Upcharge
Deacon Bob checks in from the Morris Inn at the University of Notre Dame, complimentary robe included. He’s there for Notre Dame Vision, a youth program inviting high schoolers into deeper faith.

(03:30) Sports Wrap and the Rise of Pillow Fighting
From there, they pivot to sports: the Florida Panthers clinch the Stanley Cup, Oklahoma City Thunder top the Pacers in Game 7, and Canada’s Stanley Cup drought continues. And just when you think sports can’t get weirder—enter the Pillow Fighting Championship, now with corporate sponsorships and, apparently, rules.

(10:31) Augustine and Airport Public Shaming
Fr. Dave highlights a recent In Focus episode featuring Dr. Shane Owens, where they unpack the enduring relevance of St. Augustine’s Confessions in a world increasingly shaped by AI and secular culture. The conversation quickly pivots, though, as Deacon Bob shares a less lofty moment: a painfully awkward moment from his flight to South Bend, where a bathroom break turned into a public shaming over the intercom.

(19:29) Hope as Grace: Conferences and Franciscan Honeymoon
Father Dave shares stories from the Power and Purpose Conference, themed around hope. He reflects on hope as a grace—not just good vibes or optimism—and mentions a couple who spent their 50th wedding anniversary and a couple on their honeymoon at the same event.

(23:01) Corpus Christi and the God Who Satisfies
Jesus didn’t just meet spiritual needs. He fed the crowds too. Father Dave and Deacon Bob explore how our trust in God is often strong in the abstract, but wavers in daily stresses. They tie it back to Corpus Christi, Romans 5, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

(28:34) Sacred Hearts, Summer Kickoffs, and Marriage Milestones
Deacon Bob celebrates 28 years of marriage on the same day as the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He also gives a shoutout to the kickoff of Franciscan’s high school youth conferences and the ongoing Priests, Deacons, and Seminarians Retreat.

(31:10) Praying for Peace in a Complicated World
The hosts close with a prayer for peace amid global tensions, especially in the Middle East and Ukraine. They close with a reflection on Pope Leo’s Angelus invitation to prayer and remind listeners that lasting peace only comes from the Heart of Christ.

This week on they that Hope.

00:02.284 --> 00:07.814
Nba and NHL finals are over and I got airline shamed on my way to Notre Dame.

00:08.100 --> 00:14.046
Power and Purpose was celebrating Corpus Christi and hope, which is present in our world today Love, talking about hope.

00:15.760 --> 00:20.164
You can catch this podcast and many more at theythathopepodcasts.com.

00:32.195 --> 00:40.865
Welcome to they that Hope, with Father Dave and Deacon Bob Seeing humor and hope in a crazy world and celebrating 2025, a jubilee of hope.

00:41.526 --> 00:42.607
And I'm Deacon Bob.

00:42.627 --> 00:44.269
And I'm Father Dave, jubilee of Hope.

00:44.429 --> 00:46.471
And I'm Deacon Bob and I'm Father Dave.

00:46.531 --> 00:49.854
For those of you not watching, deacon Bob is wearing a Notre.

00:50.074 --> 00:52.076
Dame bathrobe Like terrycloth robe.

00:52.116 --> 01:03.390
Yeah Well, you know, I'm in the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Notre Dame and I'm here this week speaking to teenagers.

01:03.410 --> 01:08.125
They have a youth program called Notre Dame Vision that they asked me to come speak at, so I'm kind of psyched about that.

01:09.087 --> 01:33.623
They put me up in the luxurious Morris Inn If you're not, it's the, it's the little hotel right on campus and they told me that I could charge things to my room, and hanging in my closet was this beautiful Notre Dame terry robe and it says you know, I can use it while I'm here and if I take it with me, they'll only charge the room 175 bucks, that's a good price for a bathrobe.

01:34.826 --> 01:37.472
I mean, they said I could charge things to my room and I got two robes.

01:37.512 --> 01:41.245
So let me know, that's a really, that's a really good, good idea.

01:41.786 --> 01:42.848
Actually, you know how many?

01:43.088 --> 01:43.990
How many friars are there?

01:44.030 --> 01:44.511
I'll just get.

01:44.851 --> 01:46.694
I'm sure if I just keep taking them, they'll keep.

01:46.714 --> 01:47.275
Yeah, they will.

01:47.841 --> 01:48.966
It's kind of like shampoo.

01:49.681 --> 01:52.608
I wouldn't say that every friar wants one, but I'd say half a dozen.

01:53.971 --> 01:58.826
Yeah, ok, yeah, I'll get, I'll just, I'll get, I'll get, I'll get, I'll get like 10 or so and thank you Notre Dame?

01:58.846 --> 02:00.288
They won't even know.

02:00.328 --> 02:06.676
They won't even know, you know, I don't think I mean just the advertising alone they're getting from this.

02:07.160 --> 02:12.750
I mean, think of all the students that are going to go to Notre Dame now because of I mean they're going to get the day that hope bump.

02:12.931 --> 02:19.265
And we're generous, we're not selfish, we've got the university in here at Franciscan as well.

02:19.285 --> 02:20.707
I don of bathrobes.

02:20.907 --> 02:21.748
I'll look into it.

02:21.888 --> 02:26.935
Okay, we we need to do that we absolutely need to do that.

02:34.020 --> 02:37.909
You know, I was talking to somebody who works here and, uh, and I asked, I said I said so do you do your kids get free tuition if they go to Notre Dame?

02:38.069 --> 02:41.362
Cause, that's a, that's a policy in many universities if you work for them.

02:41.883 --> 02:45.868
And he looked at me and he said well, the challenge is getting your kids into Notre Dame.

02:47.390 --> 02:51.054
Apparently, they only accept 11% of the applicants.

02:52.356 --> 02:52.881
That's insane.

02:52.901 --> 02:53.402
It's crazy.

02:53.643 --> 02:56.269
It's crazy, yeah, and I don't think they do get in.

02:56.770 --> 02:59.705
If the kids get in, they get a discount, but I don't think it's like we do.

03:01.048 --> 03:10.634
Well, I think what they worked out is you get like half off, but they have a really good policy where if your kids get to another school they'll pay half of that.

03:10.800 --> 03:24.513
So they kind of found a way to say OK, we realize that the majority of our students and faculty and staff won't actually make it into the school, so we'll help your kids go to other schools, so they're trying to find a way to be generous which sounds pretty generous.

03:24.780 --> 03:25.283
That's crazy.

03:25.303 --> 03:26.127
Well, good, have a good.

03:26.167 --> 03:26.750
How long are you there?

03:28.358 --> 03:29.141
I'm here through the whole week.

03:29.201 --> 03:29.923
I'm here until Friday.

03:30.926 --> 03:33.392
We'll miss you at the priest deacon seminarians conference.

03:33.760 --> 03:34.241
Yeah.

03:35.003 --> 03:38.271
Well, and those that are listening, they're used to going to that conference.

03:38.331 --> 03:47.805
Part of this was also, um, we've got some different folks in to help with the priest, deacon, seminarians and I was, and they were going to bring in their own musicians.

03:47.845 --> 03:55.249
So it was like, oh, I guess I have the week off and this opportunity came up, and anytime I have the chance to speak to young people, I'm usually jumping at it, so I do.

03:55.789 --> 04:00.012
It is weird to not be on campus during that conference and there's a lot of friends I'd like to connect with.

04:00.092 --> 04:05.915
But uh, you know, preaching Jesus to young people is at the heart of what God calls me to do.

04:05.935 --> 04:12.258
So I mean, that's also why, last year, when, you know, I was invited to be at the Eucharistic Congress and it was like or you could do a youth conference.

04:13.660 --> 04:15.042
I'm like yeah, I'm going to do a youth conference.

04:15.062 --> 04:15.523
No, it'll be good.

04:15.563 --> 04:17.146
We start this afternoon.

04:17.787 --> 04:20.752
It should be about 150 priests with us.

04:20.832 --> 04:26.866
Priest-deacon seminarians Fr John.

04:26.907 --> 04:30.360
Ricardo is going to be joining us, so look forward to it, and they're doing his whole rescue project thing right.

04:30.701 --> 04:35.130
That's kind of like a Catholic alpha or parish mission, vibe Right.

04:36.346 --> 04:46.423
It's really a pretty good critique of the culture, how we engage the culture and, ultimately, how the gospel is ultimately the answer to the ills that we're faced with right now.

04:46.464 --> 04:51.942
So yeah, yeah, okay we have to mention sports, even though there's not a lot going on.

04:51.962 --> 04:53.967
We had the power and purpose conference this weekend.

04:53.987 --> 04:54.569
It was so sweet.

04:54.609 --> 05:00.371
I'm going up the stairway and this lady I hear this lady yell at me father, father, start turning around and she goes.

05:00.532 --> 05:02.363
I'm one of the women who loves the sports.

05:02.443 --> 05:04.788
It gives me something, so it's, she goes.

05:04.808 --> 05:06.572
It gives me something to talk about to my kids.

05:06.592 --> 05:06.812
She goes.

05:06.853 --> 05:08.122
I'm not joking, she goes.

05:08.363 --> 05:13.990
I really appreciate that you guys do this so for both of you that appreciate that we'll keep it coming.

05:15.340 --> 05:19.029
Well, we had two major sports things happen this last week.

05:19.891 --> 05:23.348
Oh, three, yes, we'll start low and end high.

05:26.680 --> 05:28.164
So, stanley Cups three, let's not.

05:28.184 --> 05:29.106
Yes, let's start.

05:29.126 --> 05:30.029
Well, we'll start low and end high.

05:30.049 --> 05:30.490
So, um, stanley cups.

05:30.510 --> 05:31.873
The stanley cup winner was the florida panthers.

05:31.894 --> 05:32.976
They beat the edmonton oilers in game six.

05:32.996 --> 05:41.584
Canada goes once again without a stanley cup I think it's been about 38 years and florida, the state of florida, gets another stanley cup.

05:42.207 --> 05:43.733
Uh, you know the tampa bay Lightning.

05:43.753 --> 05:47.265
For the past few years, I think, they went to four straight Stanley Cup finals.

05:47.285 --> 05:52.666
They won two of them, and now the Florida Panthers have been in the past three of them and they've won the past two.

05:52.806 --> 06:02.505
So really, if you want to play hockey, the state of Florida is where Lord Stanley's Cup can often be found in this past decade and congratulations to the Florida Pulsars.

06:02.605 --> 06:03.647
You won it.

06:04.068 --> 06:05.753
Oklahoma City, that was your team.

06:05.940 --> 06:08.449
So Oklahoma beat Indiana in seven.

06:08.840 --> 06:10.207
Scrappy team Indiana.

06:10.480 --> 06:13.365
But too much for the Thunder, the Thunder were too much for them.

06:13.540 --> 06:15.968
So NBA is over, nhl is over.

06:16.108 --> 06:16.810
Yeah, NBA is over.

06:16.820 --> 06:20.569
It's worth saying something, though it was, you know, at the half the Pacers were up by one.

06:30.580 --> 06:32.004
Tyrese Halliburton went down with an Achilles strain.

06:32.024 --> 06:32.966
He'd been playing injured the whole time.

06:32.986 --> 06:34.390
It's that seemed to be the death knell for the Pacers.

06:34.450 --> 06:35.573
Congratulations to the Indiana Pacers.

06:35.593 --> 06:41.869
You fought hard you made game sevens are very rare in NBA finals and uh, but yeah, okc was the better team throughout, and so tip of the hat to OKC.

06:41.929 --> 06:58.507
And and, by the way, canada, if your best hockey player can't win in the Stanley Cup, which is Connor McDavid, at least your best basketball player, sga Gilgis Alexander, who is the MVP and also a Canadian.

06:58.627 --> 07:04.481
So at least the Canadians made it in a very different sport, but they're on top of the world.

07:06.223 --> 07:09.025
Of course, the big sports news, and I noticed this yesterday.

07:09.065 --> 07:16.091
I was at a Red Robin, which is where I always try to go whenever I travel, and I was looking at TV because I was hoping they'd have the finals game on.

07:16.111 --> 07:21.455
They did not, but they had instead the PFC championship bout.

07:21.976 --> 07:23.057
What is PFC you?

07:23.177 --> 07:25.668
asked no, I didn't Pillow fighting championship, championship.

07:25.728 --> 07:38.375
I didn't ask yeah it, it is two very muscular guys in a boxing ring hitting each other with, of course, pillows what I found very interesting was not only their fighting.

07:38.415 --> 07:39.300
Let me speak for a second.

07:40.228 --> 07:47.592
Do the pillows get broken um or torn up, or did you see that happen?

07:49.342 --> 07:50.405
I didn't see that happen.

07:50.425 --> 07:57.453
You know the sound wasn't on either, so I really missed a lot of nuance to the sport that I'm sure is there.

07:58.101 --> 08:00.508
I imagine the pillows are perfectly weighted.

08:00.528 --> 08:02.092
I'm sure there's rules about them.

08:02.940 --> 08:04.750
I thought it was funny they were also sponsored.

08:05.220 --> 08:07.827
You know, each pillowcase one was sponsored by Doritos.

08:08.028 --> 08:09.632
I think the other was sponsored by Sprite.

08:09.720 --> 08:10.101
Ridiculous?

08:10.121 --> 08:13.608
Of course they are, were they wearing headgear?

08:16.473 --> 08:17.134
No, they were not.

08:17.280 --> 08:19.643
No helmets, no headgear, so it was a free for all.

08:20.043 --> 08:21.765
I mean, I come from a family of five boys.

08:22.106 --> 08:31.076
Pillow fights were fairly significant endeavors in our family, so this is something I'm going to look into in great detail.

08:33.502 --> 08:37.920
I think it might be worth seeing if there's an NCAA version of this for Franciscan.

08:38.081 --> 08:38.569
You're not wrong.

08:38.589 --> 08:39.199
You're not wrong.

08:39.621 --> 08:43.428
I mean, we can't be good at everything, we're good at most things, but I'm listening.

08:43.780 --> 08:47.854
If we started a pillow fighting club, we'd probably rock it.

08:47.874 --> 08:48.858
Yeah, we started a pillow fighting club.

08:48.878 --> 08:53.206
We'd probably rock it, yeah, and the first rule of pillow fighting club, of course, is that there is no pillow fighting club.

08:53.648 --> 08:57.227
Okay, this is a name that's coming to me the Franciscan feathers.

08:57.307 --> 08:57.850
The feathers.

08:59.399 --> 09:00.625
Yeah, like you feather pillow.

09:00.760 --> 09:01.914
I like the bombers better.

09:02.197 --> 09:05.162
Actually, given everything that's going on, that might not be the right word.

09:05.342 --> 09:10.646
Yeah, I was going to say let's throw that by Markham and see what they think about that branding.

09:11.286 --> 09:21.734
Yeah, so we are now officially because, you know, nba is over, nhl is over, there's only meaningless baseball, which for me is a redundant term.

09:22.354 --> 09:27.478
We're seeing a lot of very weird sports pillow fighting champions, cornhole tournaments.

09:27.518 --> 09:30.926
One of my favorites, uh, the papa shot tournament, is on.

09:31.547 --> 09:34.051
Uh, espn the oat show, um.

09:34.632 --> 09:43.581
So this is kind of the dry, weary months of summer where most of most of the talk is about trades and other things that are happening in the fall.

09:43.601 --> 09:44.744
We're all just waiting for football to begin.

09:44.764 --> 09:53.029
Basically, yeah, we are approaching the time when there's one, two days where there's no sports at all, no major league sports.

09:53.049 --> 09:54.673
We're approaching that, so we'll keep people posted.

09:55.081 --> 09:57.240
It's like the Good Friday of the sporting calendar.

09:57.501 --> 09:58.665
And the quarterback.

09:58.685 --> 10:07.307
Just to keep people updated, the quarterback, sanders, who Cleveland drafted, has received two speeding tickets in like a week.

10:07.507 --> 10:10.574
One was for 98 and one was for 111.

10:11.081 --> 10:17.063
So he just needs to slow down just a bit as he's going to practice it just a little bit.

10:17.484 --> 10:18.167
Yeah, yeah.

10:18.367 --> 10:20.423
All right, folks, travelers open.

10:20.463 --> 10:23.311
I forget who even won it, the golf tournament yesterday.

10:23.800 --> 10:27.791
It wasn't Scotty Bradley, maybe it wasn't Bradley, I don't know.

10:27.811 --> 10:28.252
So there you go.

10:28.620 --> 10:29.202
That's it, folks.

10:29.242 --> 10:29.844
That's all we got.

10:31.349 --> 10:35.822
All right, where's the?

10:35.842 --> 10:40.406
I got to open up my computer to do the great, exciting news.

10:41.770 --> 10:43.503
Promo-wise, we have a new Pope.

10:45.990 --> 10:50.151
If you didn't know that, I'm really glad you just came out of your cave.

10:50.580 --> 10:52.508
Needless to say, we're still excited about it.

10:52.620 --> 10:58.506
That's why Father Dave sat down with theology professor Shane Owens to talk about all things Pope Leo XIV.

10:58.606 --> 11:09.402
On the newest episode of In Focus, father Dave and Dr Owens talk about Pope Leo's background as an American, a missionary in Peru, and as an Augustinian.

11:10.165 --> 11:17.193
A side note there's a great movie out called Paddington in Peru, which doesn't have anything to do with Pope Leo, but it's still a cute movie.

11:17.595 --> 11:28.128
They also have a great discussion about everything from St Augustine and the ancient church to our current issues with artificial intelligence, but they don't talk about sports, so not sure if it's really that interesting at all.

11:28.649 --> 11:32.515
Don't miss the latest episode of In Focus on faithandreasoncom.

11:32.880 --> 11:34.964
That's faithandreasoncom, amen.

11:37.569 --> 11:39.071
Hey, how come I'm not on?

11:39.332 --> 11:46.965
Everyone's asking the question, and by everybody it's my mom, and by my mom it's only when I remind her to ask the question, and by my mom it's only when I remind her to ask the question.

11:46.985 --> 11:48.967
When am I going to be on In Focus?

11:49.488 --> 11:56.614
Probably not, because you were on the University EW10 show, so we don't, oh I was When's that going to air?

11:56.634 --> 11:56.654
I?

11:57.475 --> 11:58.056
don't know.

11:58.156 --> 11:59.037
Do you know if it has?

11:59.177 --> 11:59.617
Has it aired?

12:00.520 --> 12:01.963
Do you know if it has?

12:01.984 --> 12:02.104
or not.

12:02.124 --> 12:04.851
I'd like to think they would give me a promo if we had done it.

12:06.961 --> 12:07.406
I don't know that's.

12:07.426 --> 12:08.397
Yeah, I don't know either.

12:08.478 --> 12:11.267
Well, hopefully it'll air soon and when it does, you'll tell your mom.

12:11.308 --> 12:23.344
You just we'll tell your mom you, I'll tell my mom to remind me, to tell me and ask me, and I'll bring it for her and she can watch it constantly that's, that's, yeah, yeah, that's an absolute.

12:23.944 --> 12:27.427
So you did you fly out to South Bend or did you drive out there?

12:28.728 --> 12:30.589
Oh no, I flew and actually I got.

12:30.969 --> 12:34.892
I got airline shamed, I got stewardess flight attendant shamed.

12:35.172 --> 12:43.218
You mentioned, I think, last week that you had like the greatest airline experience ever when you flew back from Poland, or something like that, didn't you?

12:46.204 --> 12:47.311
The flight staff was, so they were just so good.

12:47.331 --> 12:55.700
Okay, so in the yin and yang of life, Sometimes they can be overbearing and either just ignore you or constantly saying you know you're on, you're on.

12:56.141 --> 12:57.327
So these people were just great.

12:57.400 --> 12:58.785
They smiled all the time.

12:59.508 --> 13:00.573
Yeah, it was fantastic.

13:01.978 --> 13:03.264
Okay, so it was not your experience.

13:03.304 --> 13:03.907
I'm going to guess.

13:04.801 --> 13:06.084
It was not my experience.

13:06.285 --> 13:10.684
So I'm flying to South Bend, which is a very small airport.

13:10.784 --> 13:11.506
I'm confident.

13:11.526 --> 13:16.905
The only reason it exists is for the six times a year that there are Notre Dame games that are here.

13:17.265 --> 13:24.843
It's a pretty small airplane and we're you know, we get on the plane, I have to go to the bathroom.

13:24.863 --> 13:29.067
It's like one of those things, like you know, when you kind of have to go to the bathroom but you're like, oh, I don't have to go to the bathroom.

13:29.087 --> 13:33.212
I remember boarding, so I got on the plane and then we sit on the runway for a half hour.

13:33.913 --> 13:34.934
Ok, no bueno.

13:35.194 --> 13:36.195
Then we finally take off.

13:36.636 --> 13:45.832
Ok, great, and I'm waiting for the seatbelt'm like come on, come on, come on.

13:45.852 --> 13:48.077
And then they said we're about to start cabin service.

13:48.498 --> 13:51.465
I'm like, okay, well, if you're starting cabin service, I can go to the bathroom.

13:51.505 --> 13:53.270
That's what I thought, no turbulence.

13:53.671 --> 13:54.862
We'd been in the air for a while.

13:55.484 --> 13:56.326
There's only one bathroom.

13:56.366 --> 13:57.349
It's in the back of the plane.

13:57.449 --> 13:58.191
The plane's so small.

14:08.201 --> 14:10.563
There was like nothing in the back except the bathroom.

14:10.884 --> 14:11.805
So I get up.

14:11.845 --> 14:13.507
I'm going to the bathroom Then I hear Attention flyers.

14:14.548 --> 14:15.349
I don't know what they said.

14:15.689 --> 14:17.431
They said attention passengers.

14:17.611 --> 14:19.534
And this is the part I remember.

14:19.574 --> 14:20.415
They said this seat yeah.

14:24.580 --> 14:25.382
Yeah, this seatbelt light is still on.

14:25.402 --> 14:30.301
You must remain in your seats until the seatbelt light has been turned off.

14:31.384 --> 14:42.531
And I'm thinking okay, well, that's clearly for me because it's a small plane and I'm the only guy that got up and I thought that's a little passive, aggressive, because there's not multiple bathrooms, there's just the one.

14:42.952 --> 14:46.902
Then it gets worse, Like it went from passive aggressive to just aggressive.

14:47.063 --> 14:52.233
Then it said and I kid you, not to the passenger that is in the bathroom.

14:52.995 --> 14:53.696
That's ridiculous.

14:54.221 --> 14:58.873
We are about to start our cabin service and you will be trapped in the bathroom.

14:59.140 --> 15:01.168
That's exactly what they said.

15:02.301 --> 15:03.266
That's the worst what.

15:04.201 --> 15:05.848
I mean, are you joking me?

15:06.420 --> 15:12.403
Like you're intentionally saying we're going to trap you in the bathroom, Like we're not going to move our cart for you?

15:12.483 --> 15:16.726
Chuckles you know, there's only there's only 24 rows on this plane.

15:16.746 --> 15:17.586
Like are you joking?

15:17.626 --> 15:22.569
Like I'm going to get out of the bathroom and they're going to be like, well, we're not rolling this cart back to roll 11, buddy.

15:22.949 --> 15:27.432
Like you're going to just I hope you like the smell because you're going to enjoy your stay in there.

15:27.492 --> 15:29.413
And ha ha, I don't have a sense of smell.

15:29.693 --> 15:32.294
I was genetically designed to survive torture chambers like this.

15:32.815 --> 15:39.438
Thankfully, I just finished going to the bathroom and I went back to my seat and it was another five minutes before they came out.

15:44.370 --> 15:46.840
And that's right, they were trying to deal with the trauma of it all.

15:48.040 --> 15:48.702
It was really weird.

15:48.722 --> 15:51.832
I wanted I so badly, I wanted to yell from the bathroom my name is bob.

15:51.852 --> 15:52.112
I have a name.

15:52.132 --> 15:52.514
It's the worst.

15:52.534 --> 15:53.737
I'm not just a passenger.

15:53.978 --> 15:54.379
It's worse.

15:54.440 --> 15:54.921
I was seeing.

15:55.101 --> 15:55.702
What was that?

15:55.722 --> 16:15.528
It reminded me one time of um, I was flying and I got sick and was in the bathroom and although those people were really very sweet, I mean there was nothing I could do and I was just sick and, and you know, they were saying, you know, after you, and I said she was really sweet, I said ma'am, I'm, I'm sick, I I would love to say my, if I could.

16:16.410 --> 16:17.372
And no, she was.

16:17.392 --> 16:17.653
She.

16:17.673 --> 16:20.183
She says, you know, just go, just be careful, and all this.

16:20.243 --> 16:28.338
But yeah, some of when you're on a plane and yeah, if you have to go to the bathroom and you're not feeling, well, it's the worst, it's the worst, yeah.

16:28.398 --> 16:31.364
Yeah, and I just thought like wouldn't.

16:32.045 --> 16:41.628
I don't know if I was a flight attendant, though I you know I don't envy their job and they deal with lots of nonsense all the time, but I think, gosh someone's in the bathroom.

16:41.700 --> 16:43.900
They probably I don't know have to go to the bathroom.

16:43.920 --> 16:44.098
That's probably why they go.

16:43.760 --> 16:44.211
I don't know, I have to go to the bathroom.

16:44.068 --> 16:45.005
Yeah, that's probably why they go.

16:45.801 --> 16:49.353
Have you ever taken candies for the flight attendants?

16:49.373 --> 16:51.560
Candies.

16:52.543 --> 16:56.004
Yeah, like give them chocolates, like give them candy, give them chocolates or something to thank them.

16:58.129 --> 16:58.891
No, do you?

16:58.911 --> 16:59.533
I've done it once.

17:00.081 --> 17:03.010
I saw somebody else do it and they're really appreciative.

17:03.040 --> 17:05.586
They said thank you for all you do and gave them a box of chocolates.

17:05.606 --> 17:06.227
So I did it once.

17:08.232 --> 17:16.929
Wow, if you want a free drink on the plane, it might help, and if you don't want to get locked in the bathroom, it might help.

17:17.511 --> 17:21.009
Yeah, I guess, so Maybe I'll just bring an emergency box of chocolates.

17:21.169 --> 17:21.330
Yeah.

17:21.800 --> 17:23.101
Life is kind of like a box of chocolates.

17:23.121 --> 17:23.462
Yeah, it is.

17:23.722 --> 17:23.982
It is.

17:24.402 --> 17:25.083
No, it's funny.

17:25.103 --> 17:27.285
I was talking to somebody the other day.

17:27.325 --> 17:31.289
I remember one of the first times my mom and dad used to live in Guam and we would fly there.

17:31.529 --> 17:39.076
I flew there a couple of times and one of the times was on a DC-10 wide body and this plane had a lounge in it.

17:39.416 --> 17:53.001
It was the craziest thing, oh my gosh.

17:53.021 --> 17:53.261
Yeah, I mean.

17:53.281 --> 17:55.547
You walk up towards the front and there was this little lounge with a little bar and a little couch.

17:55.567 --> 17:56.349
It's like planes have changed a bunch.

17:56.369 --> 17:56.991
My flight almost I think so.

17:57.011 --> 17:58.976
My flight home most recently was at a380, which is that double decker plane.

17:58.996 --> 18:04.887
It's just massive, I mean it's, and they just cram it with people yeah, well, I mean there's a lot of people in it, but it's.

18:05.047 --> 18:06.149
It's actually a nice flight.

18:06.509 --> 18:10.335
Now I might have been upgraded, which made it a little bit nice.

18:13.062 --> 18:13.845
Yeah, might have been.

18:14.260 --> 18:21.447
I flew on a lower level too, where it's actually there's a lot of people, but it doesn't seem like you're just crammed in there.

18:21.788 --> 18:24.605
Yeah, some of those little planes like the one you flew.

18:25.287 --> 18:31.211
I'm glad they're short flights, because it's like being in a Volkswagen Beetle with your best friends.

18:33.202 --> 18:38.894
On the first leg of the trip I was in the I because I was going to fly here with my wife.

18:39.120 --> 18:42.843
I had some credit stored up on another airline, so I don't.

18:43.063 --> 18:44.930
I usually fly Delta where I have status.

18:45.080 --> 18:49.071
I flew American where they don't know or care about me.

18:49.171 --> 18:49.532
Clearly.

18:50.040 --> 18:54.352
So the first leg out, I was in and I haven't had this happen to me in a while the back row.

18:55.201 --> 18:56.545
I was in the last row of the plane.

18:57.467 --> 19:14.513
Thankfully it was the window, it wasn't the middle, and the person that sat next to me in the middle was larger than I was and it was a yeah, it was crammed back there.

19:15.042 --> 19:15.746
Let's just say that.

19:16.181 --> 19:18.770
So I guess I would say it wasn't the most pleasant experience.

19:19.460 --> 19:28.577
You know, the first leg I was pretty crammed and the second leg I was airline shamed yeah yeah well, have a good week.

19:29.018 --> 19:31.022
You won't have to worry about yeah, first world problems.

19:31.042 --> 19:36.350
You won't have to worry about that yeah, true, so we had a great, uh, we had a great conference this weekend.

19:36.410 --> 19:39.783
The power and purpose also, corpus christi, it was just great.

19:39.803 --> 19:41.410
We had about maybe 900 people.

19:42.150 --> 19:43.952
The theme was hope, which was just.

19:44.232 --> 19:45.072
It was wonderful.

19:45.693 --> 19:49.776
Mary, healy, david, kevin, how do you say David's last name, calavita?

19:51.337 --> 19:56.380
Yeah, david Calavita, he's great Mari Pablo, pete Burick.

19:56.500 --> 19:59.903
It was a great, great team, but it was just.

20:00.003 --> 20:20.768
It was actually kind of nice to have a whole week, a whole weekend, having different people to speak about hope, because obviously we've talked about it and there's the themes that we've approached and the what we've talked about and the stories that we've shared, but then to hear other people talk about it and it was just, it was really refreshing, lovely.

20:21.170 --> 20:40.759
Uh, david calabito just talked about hope being incarnational and just these you know examples of hope and things that have happened in his life and the Lord just being faithful and good and kind, and how we have a tendency to get distracted and notice all the bad things that are going on or things that are not happening the way we want.

20:40.820 --> 20:41.241
And it was just.

20:41.810 --> 20:45.539
It was a great conference, people were, it was fun, this was great.

20:46.360 --> 20:49.776
A couple comes up to me and actually two extremes.

20:49.796 --> 20:50.638
A couple came up to me.

20:50.658 --> 20:58.202
It was their 50th wedding anniversary and they said we wanted to be here at this conference for our 50th wedding anniversary, which was lovely.

20:58.931 --> 21:05.939
And then this other couple came to me and they're on their honeymoon and they said we wanted to finish our honeymoon at this conference.

21:06.039 --> 21:06.861
I said, oh, that's great.

21:07.350 --> 21:11.601
And they said, because we met last year at this conference.

21:12.684 --> 21:14.148
Really, they met at the conference.

21:14.429 --> 21:14.790
That's cool.

21:14.830 --> 21:15.713
They met at the conference.

21:15.793 --> 21:24.203
We obviously stayed in touch and we got dating they lived about an hour apart from each other and ended up getting married a week ago.

21:24.891 --> 21:28.858
It was really a cool story, so obviously I introduced them, and the crowd goes crazy.

21:29.039 --> 21:30.101
It was really, really fun.

21:31.383 --> 21:31.784
Oh, that's great.

21:32.090 --> 21:37.175
You know, when you said the opposite end of the spectrum I was worried you're going to have a couple coming up to you saying we're getting a divorce now.

21:37.330 --> 21:39.559
No, no, no, not at all, Not at all.

21:39.610 --> 21:39.971
It was just.

21:40.533 --> 21:43.321
Yeah, it was a beautiful conference and it was interesting.

21:43.410 --> 21:57.272
We focused a lot as you and I have talked about as well the Romans text that says that the God of hope fills us with peace and joy through the Holy Spirit, and then the Romans 5 text is the love of God poured forth through the power of the Holy Spirit.

21:57.673 --> 22:01.443
And we just stressed again that hope isn't something that's manufactured.

22:01.650 --> 22:01.971
It's not.

22:02.032 --> 22:04.282
If you just try harder, you can have more hope.

22:04.382 --> 22:07.173
Or if you have a positive attitude, you can have more hope.

22:07.213 --> 22:16.031
I mean, those are important things, but ultimately, hope is a gift.

22:16.052 --> 22:19.368
It's a grace from the Holy Spirit that, to the degree that we continue to have a deeper relationship with the spirit of God, he continues to animate our life more.

22:19.408 --> 22:20.973
He becomes more personal for us.

22:21.895 --> 22:23.759
A fruit of that is is hope.

22:23.839 --> 22:24.801
So it was just.

22:24.841 --> 22:27.911
It was a wonderful conference, a blessing to be a part of it.

22:28.151 --> 22:32.414
Good friends, it's almost always like a reunion you just see people you haven't seen.

22:32.434 --> 22:33.294
So it was great.

22:33.314 --> 22:34.915
You would have been proud of yourself.

22:34.935 --> 22:36.216
You did a really nice job.

22:36.716 --> 22:38.858
So yeah, that's great.

22:39.458 --> 22:44.241
Yeah, and I miss being there, and I miss being there this week with the priest, deacons and seminarians.

22:44.281 --> 22:47.523
That conference is still going on, if you listen to this, on Wednesday.

22:47.783 --> 22:55.808
So, say a prayer for those priest, deacons and seminarians, and then we're into our first high school youth conference this weekend as well.

22:56.110 --> 22:58.839
So the summer conference season has really kicked off.

22:59.651 --> 23:01.217
Please keep all of that in your prayers.

23:01.991 --> 23:02.533
Yeah, father David.

23:02.553 --> 23:03.899
As you're saying, hope is a gift.

23:04.511 --> 23:07.142
This is also the 50th anniversary of the priest conference.

23:08.728 --> 23:31.692
Oh, is that right 1975, father Mike started started it, so that's kind of fun as well cool, that's really really great amen well, and speaking of what you're saying with hope, you know, being a gift of the holy spirit is something that is something we need to ask, ask god for, because we won't get it from the world and I think, as we, you know, I mean I don't even know if we're at war or not.

23:31.752 --> 23:35.702
I've been a little bit busy with some family matters, but you know, it's just.

23:36.772 --> 23:41.019
You know, bombing Iran and all the conflicts that we're hearing about.

23:42.622 --> 23:55.501
You're not going to find hope in anything media driven, or maybe it'll be a false hope, but really, you know, obviously we're keeping all of it in prayer and we're just asking the Lord for his guidance and wisdom and peace.

23:55.581 --> 23:58.937
And, father Dave, I think you said something about the Pope made a comment.

23:58.977 --> 23:59.558
Yeah, yeah.

23:59.679 --> 23:59.919
It was.

24:00.401 --> 24:07.303
You know, he just it is Sunday Angelus, he invited everybody, something that we've done as well.

24:07.343 --> 24:08.712
Right, it's just a prayer.

24:08.732 --> 24:13.973
I mean mean it's easy to say there should be peace, which there should be.

24:14.735 --> 24:17.462
These are also complicated issues, I mean they really are.

24:17.690 --> 24:31.729
I listened to a podcast yesterday from a family that lives in just kind of normal family lives in Jerusalem and what their life is like and what it's been like since, well, their whole growing up and what it's been like since, well, their whole growing up.

24:35.814 --> 24:37.216
The father said he goes.

24:37.978 --> 24:47.621
I don't tell my kids now, but not every family lives within a bomb shelter in their apartment, but everyone that they know has a bomb shelter in their apartment.

24:48.893 --> 24:51.341
So, again, they're really complicated issues.

24:52.112 --> 25:00.199
I don't we're not going to get into all the geopolitics and all that, but we need to pray for peace and that's what the Holy Father invited us to do to pray for peace.

25:00.219 --> 25:03.322
You, just you said earlier, bob, that the world isn't going to do it.

25:03.342 --> 25:12.113
One of the things that I had, the homily yesterday and it's relevant, the gospel, obviously for Corpus Christi is Jesus and the multiplication of the loaves.

25:12.636 --> 25:18.819
But it's interesting because the beginning of the gospel it said Jesus had cured all those who need to be cured, which is just a great statement, right?

25:18.879 --> 25:19.781
Anybody need to be cured.

25:19.910 --> 25:20.792
Line up, you're going to be cured.

25:22.235 --> 25:27.233
And then the disciples come to Jesus and they say you know, people are hungry, they're tired.

25:27.695 --> 25:31.423
What we need to do is we need to send them away so that they can go to town.

25:32.373 --> 25:35.390
And I'm thinking wait, jesus literally just cured everybody.

25:35.550 --> 25:37.935
But the plan is, let's send them all away.

25:38.116 --> 25:44.680
Let's send them away from Jesus to the, to the world, to the town, and that's that's what the culture in the world wants to do.

25:44.760 --> 25:48.773
Right Is where Jesus is present, he's bringing healing, he's bringing grace.

25:48.813 --> 25:50.195
Well, wait, let's send him away.

25:50.215 --> 25:52.016
Where Jesus is present, he's bringing healing, he's bringing grace.

25:52.036 --> 25:52.757
Well, wait, let's send him away.

25:52.777 --> 25:58.382
So I said, part of our desire for Christians is no, we don't send people to the town to fend for themselves.

25:58.442 --> 26:03.027
Right, we keep them close to Jesus, and I think that's the invitation that we continue to have to make.

26:03.087 --> 26:07.737
Right is the world is ultimately going to send us away from him.

26:07.757 --> 26:16.544
We ultimately need to go towards him, and I think it's an interesting reflection that sometimes we believe that Jesus will take care of our supernatural needs.

26:17.326 --> 26:30.323
We believe in miracles, like the bread and wine you know being transformed into his body and blood, and yet it's easy for us to lose faith with the natural needs paying the bills, getting fed, you know.

26:30.410 --> 26:31.262
So it is interesting, like, wow, you fed.

26:31.246 --> 26:31.390
You know.

26:31.374 --> 26:33.092
So it is interesting, like, wow, you do these incredible miracles.

26:33.634 --> 26:34.557
Oh, but gosh, they're hungry.

26:34.637 --> 26:37.095
So they need to take care of their natural needs somewhere else.

26:37.195 --> 26:41.393
And Jesus is trying to say I can, I can take care of everything.

26:41.634 --> 26:49.403
You know, if, if you just stay with me, I can, I can take care of everything that you need natural supernatural, you know.

26:49.423 --> 26:51.791
I mean that's the prayer of our daily bread.

26:52.031 --> 27:01.957
You know, it's not just, it's not just something that is a spiritual feel good, it's also a very lived reality of the basic needs.

27:01.997 --> 27:08.857
But I find in my own life that I mean I, I'm very, I'm very bold and faithful when it comes to the future.

27:08.897 --> 27:13.736
Hypothetical, you know, like, oh Lord, I'd be a martyr for you If you, I would suffer for you.

27:13.777 --> 27:19.779
But like it's the day-to-day, like oh, like, wait, the electric goes a little bit higher.

27:19.939 --> 27:22.023
And not being like, oh, it's all over.

27:22.063 --> 27:26.671
You know, I mean it's just really funny how, when it gets to the nitty-gritty of the details of the day.

27:26.711 --> 27:26.791
Even.

27:26.811 --> 27:27.574
It's so easy to forget.

27:27.594 --> 27:28.558
Just go back to the, to the end of the day.

27:28.579 --> 27:29.221
It's so easy to forget that.

27:29.241 --> 27:30.908
Just to go back to the end of the gospel.

27:30.948 --> 27:35.503
Yesterday it was they ate and they were satisfied.

27:35.583 --> 27:43.514
And that's the important part is that I appreciate the Lord takes care of us, but ultimately he satisfies us, and that may or may not look exactly the way we want it to be.

27:43.574 --> 27:56.015
I mean, I think that's one of the things about hope is that hope doesn't mean that everything that's difficult or struggle is going to be taken away and it's going to be fixed rather in the midst of our situations, no matter where we find ourselves.

27:56.175 --> 28:01.955
The Lord is faithful, he's good, he's kind, he's going to take care of us and, and that's this grace that's available to us.

28:02.156 --> 28:16.083
So, but also you have, obviously, friday is the feast of the sacred heart, which is a great feast for the church, but also specifically for my community, because we are the Friars of the Princess and Friars of the Sacred Heart.

28:16.470 --> 28:17.994
In fact, I don't know what we're going to do.

28:18.014 --> 28:19.257
If we're going to have some celebration.

28:19.298 --> 28:20.020
That's a good question.

28:20.060 --> 28:25.964
Let me look into that, because it's the end of the Priest, deacons and Seminarians Conference.

28:26.030 --> 28:32.783
It's the beginning of the Youth Conference and I'm going on vacation the next day, which is probably the most important thing, but we'll deal with that later.

28:34.850 --> 28:36.854
But, it's your anniversary.

28:37.295 --> 28:38.097
Yeah, on Saturday.

28:38.517 --> 28:41.524
Yeah, we got married on Saturday.

28:44.430 --> 28:46.494
It will be our 28th wedding anniversary.

28:46.755 --> 28:48.358
I don't know what the thing is for the 20th.

28:48.378 --> 28:49.199
No, it's Cork, cork, greatth Cork.

28:50.542 --> 28:52.004
Cork, great, perfect Cork.

28:53.391 --> 28:58.843
So, and what's cool about it is you know we were married on a Saturday, so it's falling on a Saturday.

28:59.471 --> 29:09.010
But we were also married on the liturgical feast of Immaculate Heart of Mary, which falls this year on this Saturday.

29:09.471 --> 29:13.682
So you know, if those of you listening, these feasts are movable.

29:14.030 --> 29:28.580
So after Pentecost is always the next Sunday is Holy Trinity, then it's Corpus Christi, and then the following Friday is Sacred Heart and the following Saturday is Immaculate Heart of Mary, and of course, that all based on when Easter is, so that moves around.

29:29.001 --> 29:29.362
So I don't.

29:29.893 --> 29:43.935
I guess it must have happened over these past 28 years, but it's kind of a it's a rare day when my anniversary date and my liturgical date syncs together and actually our good friend well, I don't know if he's your good friend, he's my very good friend Joe Hahn.

29:44.015 --> 29:47.457
Scott Hahn's son is getting married on that date as well.

29:52.710 --> 29:54.616
So those listening, please pray for Joe and his beautiful bride and that celebration.

29:54.636 --> 29:54.957
That's great, Bob.

29:54.977 --> 29:57.264
Well, you and your lovely bride will be in my prayers.

29:57.930 --> 30:01.911
I don't know if I'm going to see you, but if I don't see, you know that I'm thinking about your guys' anniversary.

30:01.931 --> 30:39.068
It's been 28 years, right, 28 years, and blessing to all you know the 50th anniversary and that first, you know, wedding praying for all marriages and families that are, for us to be a little bit removed from situations, particularly war and what's going on in the Middle East, what's going on in Ukraine.

30:39.610 --> 30:55.399
Honestly, being in Poland was a little sobering because it's obviously right next to Ukraine and whenever you go to Europe, in these villages, in these towns, there's monuments of war everywhere Because, you know, in Europe it's been a history of war as the United States, it's just often been somewhere else.

30:56.350 --> 31:02.478
So, lord, we ask your blessing and your Holy Spirit to be present in all the people involved and the families that have suffered.

31:02.550 --> 31:06.101
I mean, yeah, the moms and the dads and the children who have suffered, who are in fear.

31:07.450 --> 31:10.259
Lord, we ask for a supernatural, just a supernatural grace.

31:10.299 --> 31:18.821
We don't know what that would look like, we don't know who all has to be involved and who has to receive that grace, but just bring peace in that region, lord.

31:18.841 --> 31:23.955
Bring peace in the hearts of the leaders who are making these decisions on every side.

31:23.995 --> 31:33.603
We're not worried about sides, lord, just bring peace, bring your presence, bring your healing, bring your light, your wisdom, your counsel.

31:33.770 --> 31:42.143
We just trust all of this in you and ask for the prayers of the Sacred Heart, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, to bring peace, Amen.

31:43.805 --> 31:44.126
Amen.

31:45.371 --> 31:49.222
And so, because Father Dave is on vacation, we'll be praying for you, father Dave.

31:49.651 --> 31:54.703
We will not have a podcast next week, but we will be back with you the following week.

31:55.230 --> 31:57.296
And many blessings to everyone.

31:58.940 --> 31:59.843
Do you want to do the blessings?

32:00.630 --> 32:03.476
May Almighty God bless us, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

32:03.616 --> 32:06.020
Amen Bless you, bob, amen.

32:06.401 --> 32:08.184
Thank you, father, dave, and thank you everybody.

32:08.730 --> 32:09.632
We're praying for you.

32:10.053 --> 32:12.417
You can send us prayer requests or anything you want to do.

32:12.437 --> 32:17.834
A shout-out on the show hope@franciscan.edu, that's hope@franciscan.edu

32:17.934 --> 32:20.962
God bless, God bless.
