A look at a conference and an assignment

02 Looking at our world from a theological perspective. This is the Theology Central podcast making Theology Central. Good morning everyone. It is Monday, August the fifth, twenty twenty four. It is currently ten fifty nine am Central Time, and I am coming to you live from the Theology Central studio located right here in Abilene, Texas. It is Monday. A brand new week, all right. I don't know if you get excited about a brand new week, or if you you aren't excited about a brand new week. You kind of look at it going, oh no, I gotta do this, I gotta do this, I gotta do this. Whatever, however you approach a new week, if you do so with excitement, or if you do so with oh no, almost like not looking forward to it, almost dreading it, I don't know how you approach it. But it's a brand new week, and with a brand new week comes well opportunities for study, opportunities for spiritual focus. Hopefully that we can accomplish something spiritually that by the end of the week we're somehow better off than we were at the beginning of the week.

13 I know it doesn't always work that way, don't you don't you wish in some ways spiritually speaking, and I know I'm gonna I'm gonna just just bear with me here, just just be patient, all right. Just I wish in some ways right that physical or that spiritual health, spiritual growth, spiritual maturity. I wish in some ways our spiritual life worked in some ways like our physical life, right. Because physically, if you decide, you know what, I'm going to dedicate myself to a proper balanced diet I'm going to do.

54 I'm gonna ensure that I'm exercising this many minutes per day per week. I'm going to I'm gonna come, I'm gonna work on my cardio, I'm gonna work on strength, I'm gonna work on building muscle. Whatever. You can set specific goals physically, you can begin to work on those goals, and you will begin to see the results. Right, if you put in the work, you put in the discipline. Typically, I mean, I know there's always exceptions because of different medical conditions, but typically you're going to begin to not you're going to be you're gonna actually see the results. You're going to fill the results. You may be able to get lab tests to show you how your exercise is helping with this, or this or this. It may begin to help with blood pressure or lower this, or help this building muscle masks. I mean, whatever the case may be, you will begin to see, feel, and you can even test and see the benefits of all of your hard work. It may take a while, it may take a month, it may take two months, but slowly, but surely you're going to see it now. The problem with our physical situation sometimes is a lack of discipline, a lack of effort, or a lack of desire. Like we may deep down we may say, well, I would like to do this, but we just we don't desire it enough to really put forth the work and the discipline to do those things. But we can accomplish something there.

22 It can be seen, it can be measured spiritually speaking. Do you ever find it somewhat kind of frustrating, right? Because how do you really measure it? Right? How do you like if you're like, Okay, I'm gonna read my Bible this many times a week, I'm going to listen to this many sermons, I'm going to go to church, I'm gonna meditate, I'm going to pray. You're gonna how do you measure spiritual success. Typically what we do is we measure it based off some kind of external some external righteousness, or some external rule keeping, or some external law keeping, and so we and in some ways we treat our spiritual life somehow the same way we would treat our physical Like we'll look for some external way to be able to measure it and judge it. But the only problem with our spiritual life is that external doesn't prove. Literally, it doesn't prove anything. Someone can look all spiritual externally, right. They can look like the Pharisees.

27 They can look like the Sadducees. They don't do this. I don't do this, I don't do this. I don't do this. But all you are is a whitewashed tomb. All you are is a cup that is clean on the outside but corrupt on the inside. The way to measure your spiritual success is much more difficult or your spiritual growth, or your or your spiritual health. It is much more difficult because well, so much of it is internal. So much of it is internal, and you may avoid this external behavior, but in internally you're just as corrupt. So I think it's very difficult to measure it. And not only that, if you're not careful when you begin to try to measure your spiritual growth or your spiritual victories, then sometimes it can become literally a source of pride, which then well, in a sense, throw out all of the spiritual success. That if your spiritual success becomes a source of pride arrogance, you become now judgmental and condemning, and you basically become phariseical and point your finger at everyone else, thinking you're better than everyone else, then that only demonstrates that all spiritual success that you thought you had actually it now is just your biggest failure. Wouldn't that be crazy? Your spiritual growth becomes your your greatest spiritual failure because of how you respond to it and handle it. I just think spiritually it's so hard to measure.

55 It can be so difficult. Right because here we are, August the fifth. You all know that for twenty twenty four, it's all been about It's all been about the sermons. Two point zero app Sermon challenge. Every single day, opening the app, listening to a random sermon, right, writing it down, writing down a summary of what you learned, and so by the end of the year, you can open a notebook and say, look, I listen to this many sermons. Well, that's great, that is wonderful. And by no means am I anyway trying to take away from that discipline and what you accomplished, because it is very great. It's great that some of you have already listened to hundreds of sermons.

37 That's amazing. That's awesome. And I don't even know how many I've listened to. But here's my frustration. It's August the fifth, Okay, so I've been listening to sermons, you know, since January. Now here's the question, am I better off spiritually? How do I measure it? Has it been beneficial? Now? In some ways, I don't think we can really look at our spiritual growth that way. I think I think we like. I think we like to measure things right. I think I think we like we like that. One of the things I sometimes complain about in martial arts, because I've been a martial arts you know, a good portion of my life is I don't like especially. I think it's very much an American mentality that you have these people who join a martial arts they'll they'll join a martial arts school and and they all they seem to care about is getting that next belt, taking the test, getting the next out, and the schools really push that idea. Right, Okay, you've been you've been a part of this martial arts school for this long. Okay, well hurry up and test and get your next bout now. Hurry up and test and get your nextbout now one because the testing usually costs more money. So that's another way the school makes money.

59 But it's all about these I think it's superficial advancement by getting this belt and get this belt and this belt or this belt and this belt, and then sometimes when you look at it, you're look, what have you really accomplished. My approach in martial arts was I don't care about your belt system. I don't care about it. I don't care. They're like, well, you know you've been here a year, you should have already. I don't care about your superficial artificial belt. That belt doesn't mean anything. It's irrelevant if you haven't done the work. I would rather stay at this level, working these techniques over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, so that I've mastered them before I even come close to moving to the next belt. So when in every martial arts schools I have ever been a part of, it's always like everyone's like, you've been here two years, You've taken one test, and I'm like, and I don't care. My it has nothing.

01 I know, the American mentality is, who get that belt? Look at me. I've got all these belts and I and it's all it's all about this superficial thing. Well, in some ways, I think spiritually we like to measure things that way. We like to measure things. So I know this year for this challenge, for the Sermon's two point zero app challenge, I mean, at least for me, there's a part of me though, to be honest, if I think in some ways I have a better mentality when it comes to martial arts than when it comes to my own spirituality, because sometimes I'm like, well, what what what? What? What have I accomplished? What has changed? Am I? How do I measure it? How do I how do I how do I quantify it? But I don't think we really can, I know, I know we typically use I mean there's certain illustrations used to describe the spiritual life. Right, we describe it as a race. Okay, Well, as a race, I need to know where I am.

00 I'm in the race, how far ahead am I am? I am I running to? When? Right? And so we try to measure it. I think sometimes with our spiritual life, all we can do is each day we get up and we try to learn, We try to grow, We try to grow closer to God, we confessin we struggle with it. I think it's just kind of an ongoing process that we cannot really necessarily measure or quantify because in many cases it becomes a source of pride and arrogance. So I don't know how you measure it. I think physically it's it's much easier. Spiritually, I think it's much more complicated. I don't know if you've ever given it much thought. But I was just thinking about it because it's August. I'm getting ready to talk about the sermons two point oh app challenge, and so I was just thinking, Okay, so am I better off after listening to all these sermons? Have I grown?

57 How do I measure it? So? I don't know if you ever look at it, But I just think it's not. I think spiritually it's just should he even be? Should we even try to measure it? Should we even attempt to measure it? Can all we do is today is another day that I continue my well. We can use the term relationship with God, my walk with God. And every day has its success and its failures. Sometimes the success is maybe external and the failure is internal. Maybe sometimes his success is internal and the failure is external.

38 I think it's always it's never easy to measure, and I think maybe in some ways we have to be careful not to do that, because then it becomes more about kind of like some people in martial arts having that next belt. Look at me, I'm a blue belt, I'm a red belt, I'm a brat. What what depending on your school and your system, and it's like, yeah, what does that mean. It's just an artificial ranking system that you paid money to take a test, and so you memorize some moves, you memorize some basic facts. You passed. A test doesn't really mean anything. So I think some of our so called spiritual advancements, do they really mean anything? And are they becoming a source of pride? Now? Even though I say all of that, I just think maybe maybe it's a time to just consider that. But even though I say all of that, Hey, here we are.

30 It's August the fifth, and we've got a new Sermons two point zero app sermon challenge for this week, something specific to look at. So I'm gonna this is what I'm going to do. First, I'm going to introduce you to what I want you to focus on this week for the sermon's two point oh app sermon challenge, what I want you to listen to this week. And then I'm going to provide you an assignment that maybe we will be talking about throughout the week. Are you ready? First, here's what I want you to do. I want you to take your sermon's two point oh app. I gotta unplug my iPad here, open up the sermon's two point oh app, and I want you to look for Tyler Primitive Baptist Church, Tyler T. Y L. E. R. Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. Okay, Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. For the rest of this week, You're going to become a member of Tyler Primitive Baptist Why I can't, I mean, you know, I'm just saying it that this is the church you're going to be attending all week. All right, Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. It's located in Tyler, Texas. Now, look, even if a church teaches absolutely heretical doctrine, if they're located in Texas, I mean that there's got to be like, well, you get a pass, right. I mean, you may be a heretic, but I'm not saying they're heretics. But I'm saying, even if you are a heretic, if you're preaching in your churches in Texas, there's got it. I mean, that's

00 got to prove something, right, Okay, I don't know, Okay, but all right, I digress. Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. Look that up, Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. Once you get there, on the sermon's two point oh, app scroll down and you're gonna see recent series, recent series, and you're gonna see the one that says twenty twenty four Salt and Light, twenty twenty four salt and light. Currently there are thirteen sermons, thirteen sermons. All right, your mission, your job, your challenge is that this week you focus on simply listening to the sermons of the twenty twenty four Salt and Light Conference from Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. Look up Tyler Primitive Baptist Church on the Sermon's two point oh app. Scroll down, go to recent series look for twenty twenty four Assault and Light. Hey, Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. Get some artwork, get some artwork for your series. Okay, get some artwork, all right, it makes it look better. Okay, So about I digress. All right, then.

20 Here you have it. I won't go, I won't. Well, here's what we're gonna do. So I'm gonna I'm gonna play their welcome and introduction to the conference. I'm gonna play their welcome and introduction to the conference. I think it's really cool that they did that. I think that's really awesome. All the churches out there, listen to me. First of all, when you're going to have a conference that's going to be aired on you know you're gonna be broadcasting on the Sermon's two point oh app and you're gonna be uploading your content there a week out. Two weeks out, start recording messages promoting and talking about the conference and letting everyone know the schedule the I'm of the live broadcast, how quickly you're going to turn around and upload promote? I mean you've got the app right, You've got the sermon's two point oh app. Promote everything right, Promote it so that because there's there's so much content available on the Sermon's two point oh app. I may not even know your conference is going on until after it started. But if I'm seeing messages, you know the twenty twenty four whatever, you know, this one's called the Salt Light Conference is coming up in two weeks. We'll be broadcasting live each evening at this time. We'll be uploading the messages within thirty minutes after each live broadcast. Please tune in right and so, and then you can you can do you know, hey, we're going to be covering these topics and all that.

48 You can just do all kinds of things. So many times I don't even know what conference is going on. I'll start listening, like what is going on? And then when you go find like the very first message that don't do much of an introduction. So I love this one that they do a welcome and an introduction and we're gonna play. I haven't listened to it yet, but we're going to We're going to pull this up. I didn't even know they had it. I was going to go review. I was going to possibly just do a review of one of the messages. And I'm like, well, let's not do this. Let's turn this into a challenge. Let's get everyone to listen to all of them, and then we're going to do an assignment. So right now, let's just talk about the twenty twenty four Salt and Light Conference. Here's the introduction and they call it welcome and introduction, and let's see, well what they had to say in regards to this conference. Are you ready? Here we go?

42 All right, I wanna welcome everyone to the twelfth Annual Salts and Light Conference. We're so thankful for all of you who are here. We've been excited about and looking forward to this meeting ever since the meeting ended last summer. And I know a lot of you have come from a meeting over in Alabama where you've spent a portion of the week already considering some of the messages and lessons in the Book of Ephesians. And we did not coordinate that. But this weekend, the Lord Willing we're going to consider in a little bit of depth the teaching of Ephesians chapter four. We've entitled the topic of this meeting one Lord, one Faith, one baptism.

25 And all right, so this week, now, this is not part of your assignment. Okay, I was. I was focused on the title Salt and Light. All right, So that's not really the theme. The theme is really Effesians four. So then I know what we're going to do. Obviously this week, I just want you reading Ephesians four all week, Ephesians four, whenever you get a chance, Ephesians four. And then I want you to listen to all of these messages and the twenty twenty four Sault and Light Conference. Now I have an assignment for you that's not going to take you to Ephesians four. Okay, it's gonna take you somewhere else, because salt and light. That's what caught my attention. Salt and light. Salt and light. You know that comes from Matthew chapter five. Right, all right, you're gonna be given an assignment about that. But so for your challenge, you're gonna listen to all the sermons and the twenty twenty four Salt and Light conference, all right, and then you're gonna be reading Ephesians four all week, just over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. All right. Now, let's see what else they have to say in their introduction.

33 And we're probably all familiar with the text where that is stated in Ephesians four five. But the context of Ephesians four is about the Church being built up together in unity, being built up together in Christ. And it all starts. The foundation is with our understanding of who the Lord is, of who Jesus Christ is. We can't serve him if we don't know who he is, and we certainly can't understand or or address how we interact with him if we don't know him. And Ephesians four is structured in exactly that way. The apostle writes by inspiration and says, I therefore the prisoner of the Lord beseech ye you that you walk worthy of the vocation wherewith you are called.

19 That's our life's work. We're called to in. Christ, with all lowliness and meekness, with long suffering, for bearing one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one spirit, even as you are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all. And in you all. If you've looked at our proposed schedule for the weekend, topics have been very loosely assigned. But we're looking at this verse and these topics in groups of three. First three messages on one Lord, the nature, the person, the character of God, who he is that we worship and with whom we have to do. Followed by one faith, what is it that we believe? And how does that unite us together or draw us together? And then one baptism.

19 How is it that we enter into fellowship with one another and with the Lord in his church? And what does this ordinance of baptism mean? And what does it then build in terms of the structure of the church. So all right, so you may want to write down those three things, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, One Lord, one faith, one baptism. You're going to be reading reading Ephesians chapter four over and over and over, but may write down that those phrases one Lord, one faith, one baptism. That's really where the focus is going to be. And then I want you, obviously to listen to every message in the twenty twenty four Sault and Light conference. All right again, open up the sermons two point oh app look for Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. Scroll down it'll say recent series Salt and Light, thirteen sermons. That is your goal.

13 Let's continue to listen to the introduction. But I just want you Ephesians four Effusions four, and I want you to just focus on those three phrases One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism. Very interesting structure. I love the way they're structuring this. I love the way they're approaching this. I love the fact they give an introduction. All of this is great. So hopefully we're going to make use of this this week. We'll probably be reviewing many of the messages. Hopefully we will depending on how my week goes, and we will see what we can what we can accomplish. Now, again, as I stated in my introduction, my temptation will be well by the end of the week. How am I going to be able to measure how this has benefited me?

58 And again, I think sometimes that's we can't really approach that when it comes to spiritual growth and spiritual development. But well, either way, we definitely hopefully by the end of the week something good will come from this. Well, let's continue to listen to the introduction. I'm just thrilled to have the group of speakers that the Lord has blessed us to have this year. I pray that it'll be a blessing to each and every one of us. I've been asked to make a few announcements by way of housekeeping, we are going to try to keep pretty strictly to the schedule, at least from the standpoint of start and stop times for messages, for song services and the events that are published and listed.

38 Please work with us to make that happen. And we're going to start with you or without you, so try to be in here at the published start times. We do have a prayer request specifically. For one of ours here at Tyler, brother James Fathman. He's down with COVID and isn't going to be able to be with us. I know he was looking forward to being here, and I'm sure he and Sister Donna are watching the live stream. Mentioning that if you do have anyone who's not able to be here, be sure and let them know the services are being live stream. They're available on Sermon Audio, both live and as soon as they conclude. So do invite anyone to participate in that we're gonna ask.

21 I do love the fact that says as soon as you know, they're going to be made available soon after. That's awesome because many of the broadcasters I see, like you did a live broadcast and you haven't uploaded that in six months? Where's the where is it uploaded? Now? Again, I am still baffled, even to this day, I am baffled beyond all comprehension on even when I look at my own analytics for the sermon Sermonadio platform, how many use the website not the app. I'm sometimes baffled by the So even he says sermonadio dock up. Why why wouldn't you say the sermon it's two point oh app or or even advertise their church one app, Like I don't understand, Like it's twenty twenty four and so. And even when I look at my analytics, I'm like, why are all these numbers coming from the website and not the app? Why wouldn't everyone be using the sermon's two point, Oh app, Who wouldn't be using the app? I like, I don't under who's using the website? Like I don't if you use the website, I would love to know why you use that versus the app. I would love to know that. I would love to know it because it just seems you use an app for everything. So why wouldn't you use the app? Now? If there's a reason, I would love to know, I really do. I would really love to know. But all right, so I do love the fact that hey, watch the live stream. That's great, give you at least a platform sermon audio and tell you they're going to be made available on the man.

52 It sounds like immediately after. That's all. So everything I like the structure. I like everything they're doing here. This year. That we'd be pretty strict and observing no food and drinks outside of the dining room. So if you need hydration, absolutely get it, but do it in the dining room. We don't want food and drinks brought into the auditorium, into the fellowship area, or really very much outside except for water that's provided out there. We want to try to limit the amount of trash and the amount of mess that is brought about by that. Also, no one in the flower beds. Seems like a strange thing.

33 To ask, but especially little kids stay out of the flower beds. There are some dangers there. There's some sharp spikes there that they could step on. It could hurt them. And besides that, there's plenty of room to play, plenty of room to walk around that doesn't involve being in the mulch and in the flower beds that some here. Have worked hard to keep up. As far as housing and hospitality, if you need a place to we want to. Provide it for you. Sister Deborah and Sister Anna are coordinating that effort, So see them. If you don't know who. They are, reach out to me or anyone else from here, and we'll get. You to where you need to be. We do have shirts.

15 We don't do a extremely formal registration anymore. We don't ask anyone to pay a fee to be here. We invite everyone to be here to worship. But if you do get a shirt, just mark off your name on the list of those who have received their shirt, because we did. WOW a conference that doesn't charge people. Man, this is checking all the boxes, okay, and I got no problem if they ask for donations or pass the plate or any I don't have any problem with that. But it should be free to get in to hear the word of God preach. Any conference that charges people money to come inside to hear the Bible preached, you're making the Bible merchandise. You're making the Bible of product that people are paying for. And now, if we're being really painfully honest, and nobody ever wants to admit this, conferences that charge people money to get in, you're paying for celebrity. You're not paying for the preaching of God's word because you can listen to millions of sermons on whatever topic they're preaching on for free. You're paying because it's John MacArthur.

22 You're paying because it's body. You're paying you just name the preacher, whoever it is, it's Paul Washer. You're paying money to get into a conference because of a name. And well, obviously I know that at least MacArthur's conference, Shepherd's conference costs money, and I'm pretty sure Voddy's been a part of conferences that costs money. I can't speak of Paul Washer, but I'm just saying, whoever the popular person is, and you have to pay money to get inside a building to hear the word of God preach. And in some cases this is even more insane. Some cases, you're paying money to get inside a church to hear the word of God taught, and Christians just say amen to that and throw down their money. You should be walking away in total protest, because the Word of God is not a is not merchandise you can use to charge people money to hear someone preach from it. So conferences should be free. Conferences should be free, yet they cost money, so they've got to be supported. Right, That's the that's the weird that's the weird dynamic when it comes to ministry, right right, Like I I will never want to charge anyone for anything I do, but yet I have to have money in order to do it.

42 So it's always all you can ever do is hope that people who benefit from what they hear will support what they hear, because if they don't support it, it goes away. And that's why some like I can't count on people to support it, so we have to charge money in order to accomplish it. I understand the mentality, but it's either if God's people don't want to support it, then then that's it. Then then fine, go find something you have to pay for. I guess, but but I think there's a lot of people trying to offer a lot of things for free that need support. All right, So I love so, I love this. Try to get shirts for everyone who registered. There are additional shirts and additional registration. Obviously, if you didn't pre register, register, we'd like you to sign on the list that's on the table out in the in the fellowship area. Sign your name, put your email address. We'd like to keep track of who's here and stay in contact with you.

38 So that's it for the initial announcements. Again, help us keep things on track and we'll all have a wonderful time this weekend. Feel free to see me with any questions or any any ideas about how we can make your your stay here and your time here better. And let's keep in mind that our desire is to see the Lord and his word and to worship him, and we're all perfectly equipped for that. One thing we do learn in this chapter of Ephesians, as well as throughout the New Testament scripture, is that the church is built up of all of us, with all of our different personalities, all of our different places that we come from. We're all unique, but we're all uniquely qualified to worship the God who has called us. We're all uniquely qualified to to fit together, to be built up together into the measure of the stature of Jesus Christ. That's what we're trying to do. That also means we all have weaknesses, we all need to be built up, we need to be different than we are. So let's be patient with one another, let's labor with one another, and most of all, let's give our attention to worship.

50 So I'm gonna lead us in prayer. Then we're gonna ask Brother Daryl to come and lead the next couple of songs, and then we'll call on song leaders throughout this service, and then we'll have our first speaker scheduled for three forty five. Let's go to the Lord in prayer. And there you have it. That's the introduction to the twenty twenty four Sultan Light Conference. Your task for this week is to start listening to all the sermons in that series. How do you find it? You download the Sermons two point zero app the app. Download the app once you download the app, do I search for Tyler Primitive Baptist Church. Once you find it, scroll down you will see recent series. You'll see the twenty twenty four Sultan Light. There are thirteen sermons. Start listening. All the sermons are based on Ephesians chapter four. Start reading Ephesians chapter four over and over and over and over and over this week, all right, and right down, I'm going to go to Ephesians right down these phrases one Lord, one Faith, one baptism, because all of the sermons are grouped around those three phrases, One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism. Right, So that is what you're going to do. But I would it would be I would be horribly foolish for

20 me to ignore the name of the conference, which is Salt and Light. This is where your real assignment's going to come this week. Are you ready? Ephesians chapter five are Aphiesians. Matthew chapter five, verse thirteen. Matthew Chapter five, verse thirteen. You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

01 Neither do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. Salt and light, here is your assignment. So many pastors and preachers that we come, they open up the Bible, they say salt light, and they say salt means this, light means this. Well, Jesus saying your salt in your light.
