Salem: Name Pronunciation Correction

It is Thursday, March the twentieth, twenty twenty five. It is currently five point thirty four pm Central Time, and I am coming to you live from the Theology Central studio located right here in Abilene, Texas. Now, every single time I hit the button to go live, every single time I record an episode, in every single time I upload an episode, I truly hope that everything said in that episode, everything said in that live stream, everything said in that recording, I truly hope it is accurate and it is correct. But we all know that there are times that things are not correct, and there are things are not accurate because well, I make mistakes. I make, you know, a lot of mistakes, especially when it comes to pronouncing the names. When it comes to pronouncing the names of places or people, I sometimes don't state things in a correct way, and trust me, it bothers me greatly.

1:14 It really does. And I'm always appreciative when anyone listening sends me an email says, hey, you didn't see this name correct, or you didn't name this place correct. I mean yeah, I mean I get upset and I get mad, but get I get upset and mad up myself, I'm very grateful. Soone points it out so that I can turn on the microphone and offer a correction. Now, I definitely, you know, I always struggle, Like, on one hand, I could just immediately go in delete the episode that contains the mistake, re record it, and then well, the mistake is gone. Only the people who heard the original know that the mistake ever happens, And there's nothing that would would indicate that I ever made said mistake. It would just be gone.

But I as much as I want to do that, I mean, there's a part of me that really really wants to do that, right, there's another part of me that says, no, don't do that right. Leave your mistakes, leave your errors, but always record a correction. Always offer a correction so that people can hear the mistake and hear the correction. One, it's humiliating, which is good to keep you humble. And two, hopefully it shows that you're trying to be as transparent as possible. I mean, when I mean when you're doing things live, I mean there's no editing. There's no safety net. You either get it right and get it wrong. I don't have a producer in my ears saying no, no, no, correct that correct that. No, I don't have anything. It's just me in front of a microphone, and mistakes happen.

2:53 Not excusing it. Those mistakes, every mistake I make, should not happen. Let me make that very clear. I'm not making any excuse. It's on me. I mean, my job is to get things right, but I sometimes make a mistake. And in the last episode, I made a mistake, all right, So I want to take a moment to issue a correction regarding a pronunciation mistake I made in the previous episode when discussing the Salem witch Trials, I mispronounced the name of one of the most well known victims. And as someone who's been studying the Salem witch Trials forever and has been to Salem multiple times, I've heard this name stated who knows how many times? I've read the name who knows how many times? And well, even though I've got all of that study research and even going and hearing the name pronounced, I mispronounced it, all right.

3:55 So we talked about in the last episode, the gentleman who was pressed to death. His first name is spelled g I l e s. His last name c O r e y. G I l e s the first name, or that's the first name, g I l e s the last name c O r e Y. Well, I pronounced it as Giles Corey. Giles Corey is how I pronounced it. The correct pronunciation of his name is Giles Corey. Got Giles Corey, not Giles, but Giles. All right, Like, well, I'm not even gonna say this. I mistakenly pronounced it with a hard G, but historically it is pronounced with a soft J sound. All right. Now, some people may say it matters. May some people may may say it doesn't.

4:55 It matters, Okay, it matters because we're talking about a historical event. So I strive to be accurate. I really do. I strive to be accurate as possible when telling these stories, and that includes names. I want to get the names right, I want to get the dates right. I want to get the details right. So I wanted to take the time to correct this and ensure that we're honoring well the story of Giles Corey correctly. I want to make sure we honor his story, honor him. I don't want to get his name in. I don't care if it's if it's someone I agree with or someone I don't agree with his history, someone that I think is the villain, or someone I think is the hero. It doesn't matter.

5:37 You want to get their names correct, you want to show respect to history. And so I've tried to do my very best, and I just got it completely wrong. And I want to thank the listener who emailed me and told me, hey, that's it's not Giles, it's Giles. Now. I could sit here and make an excuse, you know, I probably could, because in my mind, I'm just going to be honest with it, with you and my mind. When I saw it, I immediately thought of the J. Giles Band from the nineteen eighties, right free frame. I could play some songs by them. But it's it's not the J.

6:18 Giles Band. It's not the Jay Giles band from the nineteen eighties. It's not it is the It's starts with it is pronounced Giles Corey, not Giles Corey. It's not the J. Giles Band, It's Giles Corey. See, even when I see it it's hard for me to g I l e s. I want to say Giles, but it is Giles Corey, and I apologize that I got that wrong. I just wanted to take a few minutes to just tell everyone, and I will continue. Look, I really hope whenever I get something wrong, whenever people correct me, I appreciate it. Now some people correct me and a you know, in a way trying to help. Some people use my mistakes as an opportunity to bash me. It doesn't matter what you're using it as, whether you're trying to correct me or whether you're trying to go after me. It doesn't really matter. The ultimate goal is, or the ultimate end is if I take the correction and then make the correction live on the air, upload it. That's all that really matters is accuracy. Truth. Right. Can't be about my ego. It cannot be about that, And I'm going to be honest with you. When I got the email, my first thought was, well, I can just go delete that episode. I mean, not that many people have listened to it right now, I could delete it, redo it.

7:42 Don't even have to mention it. Don't even tell anyone that I'm redoing it. The few people who listen. They they may ask the question, they may move on. They're like, well, that's he's repeating what he did last time, and then it would be it would all look nice and neat. But I try not to do that. I really do. Are times I will go in and edit things. Ever once in a while, I don't like when I do that, but sometimes I will. Sometimes I will delete an episode completely and redo it. But those are very very very very rare. I try not to because I like the idea that letting people know, hey, I make mistakes. I've made a lot of mistakes. Okay, I've made look forget I mean, look, I stated all the time. I'm a sinner with a microphone, so I sin all the time, and I well mispronounced things frequently. I really really do.

8:37 I mean, I can make all the excuses in the world. There is no excuse. I should know Giles Corey, I mean I really should. He's one of the most well known victims of the Salem witch Trials. But I look at his name and I see Giles Corey. I do it's Giles. I could blame it on my love from you. It can think of the Jay Giles band, but it's the It's Giles Corey, so hopefully you will remember that. I will try to do better. I cannot promise you, though, I cannot promise you that two three, four, five episodes from now if we make some reference back to him, I won't if I especially if I'm seeing it written and written form. When I look down, I've my first thought is going to be Giles Corey. That's what I'm just going to because I see the g and it's just what in my mind says to do. I'm not seeing it's correct, but I may may make the mistake again and tempetuous. I messed that up when we were dealing with Acts twenty seven. I think I corrected it by the end of that episode. Someone emailed me about that as well, and I appreciate it. Tempetuous I think I said temptuous or I don't know even how I said it, but tempetuous, I think is the correct way.

I mean, I will strive to do better. I hope I will do better. But the one thing that is absolutely guaranteed, I will never ever be perfect.
