Welcome to the Unbreakable Boundaries Podcast

Communicating with Your Loved One

Jen discussed the challenges of communicating with loved ones struggling with substance abuse. She emphasized the importance of recognizing the shift in perspective from parent to peer, active listening, and setting clear boundaries. Jen also highlighted the need to avoid interrogating questions and maintain a normal and enjoyable tone, while avoiding conversations that may trigger shame and transitioning them into more positive interactions.

Action Items

Reflect on whether you are still in a "parenting role" and make adjustments to communicate as an equal

Avoid repetitive conversations about what your loved one should be doing better and instead ask about what they enjoy

Keep conversations short before they turn negative and end on a positive note

Shift conversations away from interrogating questions about your loved ones actions/choices and instead ask open-ended questions about interests

Recognize conversations may unintentionally "hit shame buttons" and work to understand how your loved one perceives what is said
