If one of your video episodes is showing a grey box in your dashboard or a broken image on your live website, you're in the right place. It looks alarming, but it's almost always a simple fix, and it's not a bug on your site.
Here's what's going on and how to sort it out in a couple of minutes.
What you're seeing
When an episode is linked to a YouTube video, Podpage pulls the video's thumbnail straight from YouTube to show on your episode cards and pages. If that thumbnail isn't available in high resolution, you'll see one of two things:
- In your Podpage dashboard: a plain grey placeholder image where the thumbnail should be.
- On your live website: a broken image icon (or empty space) instead of the video thumbnail.
Why this happens
Every YouTube video has a thumbnail, but YouTube only creates a high-resolution version of it when the creator uploads their own custom thumbnail image. If a video was published without a custom thumbnail (for example, YouTube just grabbed a frame from the video automatically), the high-resolution version simply doesn't exist.
Podpage always asks YouTube for that high-resolution thumbnail because that's what looks crisp and professional on your website. When it isn't there, YouTube returns a blank grey image (which is what you see in the dashboard) or nothing at all (the broken image on your site).
Why we don't just use a smaller image instead
This is the part that trips people up, so here's the honest explanation. YouTube does offer smaller, lower-resolution thumbnail sizes that almost always exist, but we deliberately don't fall back to them, for two reasons:
- Black bars. The most reliable smaller size is a square-ish 4:3 image. Modern videos are widescreen (16:9), so that smaller version comes with thick black bars across the top and bottom, which looks broken in a different way.
- Blurry quality. The other small sizes are tiny. When stretched to fit your episode cards and pages, they turn out soft and pixelated, which makes your site look low-quality.
In other words, automatically swapping in a smaller image would trade one ugly result for another. The real fix gives you a sharp, full-width thumbnail, and it takes just a minute on YouTube.
How to fix it
The fix is to upload a high-resolution custom thumbnail to the video over on YouTube. Once you do, Podpage will use it automatically.
- Go to YouTube Studio and sign in.
- In the left menu, click Content, then click the video you want to fix.
- Scroll to the Thumbnail section and click Upload file.
- Upload a high-resolution image. YouTube recommends 1280 x 720 pixels (and at least 640 pixels wide).
- Click Save.
How long until it updates on my site?
YouTube can take a little while to make the new high-resolution thumbnail available, and your site caches images for performance, so it may not change the instant you save. Give it some time and it will refresh on its own. There's nothing you need to change inside Podpage.
Tip: Getting in the habit of uploading a custom thumbnail to every YouTube video is great for your channel anyway. Eye-catching thumbnails get more clicks on YouTube, and they'll look fantastic on your Podpage site too.
