Sue grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, the only girl in a family with four boys. She wanted to be a doctor from six years old, when her father was diagnosed with brain cancer. His prognosis was poor, but cutting-edge care gave him fourteen more years which was time enough for him to teach his kids to love math, to bring an entrepreneurial spirit to work and play, to swim as often as possible, and, above all, to share their fun generously.
Sue trained at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for college, medical school, and her pediatric residency, a place that still feels like home. She and her husband, Marc, raised both of their children in the Twin Cities before moving to Bozeman, Montana, to be near her brothers.
For most of her career, Dr. Daniels has owned her own pediatric practice, first in Minnesota and now in Montana, building a business made to serve not just her community but her staff, with real attention to work-life balance. She has taught medical students, pediatric residents, and nurse practitioner students for years, and a long-held interest in meditation, acupuncture, and other healing traditions led her to become founding president of The Montana Mindfulness Project, which brings mindfulness into schools from kindergarten through college. Today Dr. Daniels serves on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, the Academy's largest section.
She also knows firsthand what it feels like to lose your footing in a career you once loved, and what it takes to find your way back. That experience is the heart of Still Practicing.
When she isn't working, Dr. Daniels is usually with family: Marc, her husband of more than thirty years; their grown children, Henry and Nora; and her mother, with whom she quilts and sews everything from morel mushroom hats to bags that are really more luggage than tote. She and her niece Amy have never met a craft they didn't love, and, true to her dad's lesson, they swim everywhere they possibly can.
