Filmed in the heart of Llandovery, a town in mid-Wales, beneath castle walls and in sight of a busy livestock market, this week’s Word for the Week asks a searching question:
What is the greatest threat facing the church today?
Persecution? Cultural hostility? Economic pressure? Moral compromise?
Revelation 1 suggests something deeper.
Before Jesus rebukes, warns, or corrects the seven churches of Asia Minor, He first reveals Himself - not as a comforting symbol, but as:
- The Son of Man walking among the lampstands
- The Lord with eyes like fire
- The One whose voice thunders like many waters
- The First and the Last
- And most fundamentally the Living One who holds the keys of death and Hades

This passage (Revelation 1:9–20) teaches that the most dangerous condition a church can enter is not external attack — but a diminished vision of Christ.
When Christ is reduced:
- Compromise becomes reasonable
- Fear becomes decisive
- Endurance fades
- Worship becomes performance
- Doctrine becomes abstraction
But when Christ is seen as He truly is — holy, sovereign, priestly, judicial, merciful, eternal — repentance becomes possible and endurance becomes necessary.
This episode explores:
- The prophetic encounter on Patmos
- The Old Testament background (Daniel 7, Isaiah 44, Ezekiel 1, Exodus 19)
- The theological meaning of “First and Last”
- Why John falls “as though dead”
- Why Revelation begins with vision before correction
- And crucially what this means for struggling churches in Wales — and anywhere
If you belong to a small church or chapel that feels tired, threatened, or diminished…
If your own spiritual life feels numb…
This message is for you.
