"THE UNINVITED (1944) GETS GAY": Haunted By Queer Coding" - Special Guests: BLOODY DATE NIGHT

The Countdown to Halloween Podathon lurches closer and closer to the horror fan's night of night, and for tonight's episode, we're talking about one of my all-time favorite ghost story, THE UNINVITED from 1944 , masterfully directed by Louis Allen.

A playfully bantering pair of siblings (played by RAY MILLAND and RUTH HUSSEY) impulsively buy a long-abandoned seaside mansion built on the edge of a cliff.
(After all, what could possibly go wrong in THAT scenario?)

The house is of course haunted as heck, but who is the increasingly malevolent spirit that still walks the halls of Winsor House? And why does that evil force seen determined to destroy Stella Merideth (GAIL RUSSELL), a seemingly innocent young townswoman?

Aside from being the first movie ever to treat ghosts as a real thing, not a hoax or a comic bit, THE UNINVITED is loaded with Hayes-era queer coding for its female characters (which made it a huge hit with covert lesbian societies!)

To help me untangle the knots the filmmakers had to tie their script in just to get it past the Decency Code, I'm joined by those Pillars of American Decency, JOSH KREBS and LIZ RICHARDS, the husband-wife hosts of BLOODY DATE NIGHT.
