Wayne Sutton: Welcome back to Prosper with Wayne. I'm Wayne Sutton. Today I want to talk about something that almost everyone struggles with at some point. That word is motivation. Have you ever noticed how easy it is to feel unstoppable after watching maybe an inspiring YouTube video, attending a conference, reading a great book, maybe listening to an incredible sermon. You think this is it. Everything changes today. And then Tuesday comes, the alarm goes off. The excitement begins to fade and suddenly you don't feel like doing the very thing you were so passionate about just a day or two before. If you've experienced that, you're not alone. And the problem isn't that you're lazy. The problem is most people are living off of external motivation, and external motivation has an expiration date. It's not trying to power your life with fireworks. Come on, we just finished July 4th. Listen, they're exciting, they're beautiful, but they burn out quickly. So today I want to challenge you to build something much stronger. Intrinsic motivation. That's the kind of motivation that comes from within. The kind that keeps you moving when nobody's watching. The kind that doesn't depend on applause, lights, compliments, circumstances, how many people shared my video. See, years ago, researchers performed an interesting experiment. They gave one group of children paper and markers and simply told them to draw whatever they wanted. And the children loved it. They drew for the joy of creating. Okay. The researchers changed one thing then. The next group was told if they drew pictures, they'd receive a special certificate and a prize afterward. Now the children worked just as hard, maybe even harder. But here's what happened. Weeks later, when no one was offering prizes anymore, the first group kept drawing, but the second group largely stopped. Why is that? Because the first group was driven by something inside of them. The second group had learned to work only when there was an external reward. That experiment has been repeated multiple different times, different forms over decades, and it teaches a powerful lesson. When our only fuel is external rewards, our motivation disappears when the rewards disappear. But when the drive comes from purpose, from identity, from meaning, then it sticks. And in coaching and helping so many people over the last few decades, I've seen this. We chase promotions, recognition, money, titles, followers, likes. None of those things are wrong in itself, but they're terrible foundations. Because the moment they disappear, so does our motivation. This is something I've discovered in helping people over the years. People don't consistently live according to their goals. Okay? They live according to their identity. If your identity is I'm trying to be successful, then you'll constantly wait until you feel successful. But if your identity becomes, I'm someone who creates value, I'm someone who keeps my word, I'm someone who honors God through excellence, then your actions begin to match who you believe you are. That's intrinsic motivation and that's how you create intrinsic motivation. It flows from identity instead of emotion. there's mornings when I don't feel like recording podcasts, when I don't feel like doing sales training. There's moments I don't feel like writing or making sales calls. But guess what? Doing the things I know I should do inside. The difference is I've stopped asking my emotions for permission. Let me say that again. I went walking with my wife this morning. I didn't feel like, but I knew we needed that time together. I knew I needed the exercise. So I stopped asking my emotions for permission because feelings are wonderful servants, but they're terrible leaders. If I only worked when I felt motivated, I'd accomplish very little. See, one of my favorite quotes: discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most. Think about that. Financial discipline creates financial freedom. Health discipline creates physical freedom. Spiritual discipline creates spiritual maturity. Relationship discipline creates stronger marriages, deeper friendships. Discipline isn't punishment. It's actually a pathway to freedom. And as a Christian, I believe there's even a deeper layer. Our purpose isn't simply about achieving success. It's about stewardship. In fact, Colossians three twenty three, whatever you do, work hardly as for the Lord and not for man. That changes everything because suddenly my work isn't about applause. It's worshiping God. Your consistency isn't about proving yourself. It's about honoring God. Your excellence isn't about impressing people, it's about faithfulness. And faithfulness never requires an audience. So how do you build intrinsic motivation? I'm gonna give you four practical steps. First, know your why. Not the shallow answer. Go deeper. Who benefits because you keep showing up? Is it your family, your future clients, your church, the people that God has called you to serve? Purpose fuels perseverance. Okay. Second, become the kind of person who keeps promises to yourself. Every time you say you'll do something and you don't, you weaken your trust in yourself. I could do a whole teaching on this, and I will at some point. But I want you to keep your own word. So start small. Find something you say you're going to do and do it. Keep your word. Confidence grows from integrity. Write that down. Confidence grows from integrity. Third, protect your mind. If you're constantly consuming fear, comparison, negativity, outrage, yeah, then why are you surprised when motivation disappears? But feed your mind with truth, wisdom, hope. Feed your mind with people who challenge you to grow. And finally, stop waiting to feel inspired. Action creates momentum. Momentum creates confidence. Confidence creates consistency. Most people think motivation creates action. Actually it's the opposite. Action creates motivation. So let me leave you with three questions. So grab pen and paper. I want you to write these down And ask yourself these every morning. Who am I becoming today? Who benefits if I stay consistent? And what's one action I will complete today, no matter how I feel? Not ten, just one. Because one completed action becomes two, two become habits, habits become character. And character shapes your future. Remember, external motivation, nothing wrong with it, may get you started. But intrinsic motivation keeps you going. So build a life that's rooted in purpose. build habits that don't depend on emotions. Become the kind of person who acts from conviction instead of convenience. Your future isn't built by occasional inspiration, it's built by daily faithfulness. So Thank you so much for spending these few minutes with me today.
