Celebrating World Radio Day

Celebrating World Radio Day

If you didn’t know, February 13th is World Radio Day! I learned this just recently and thought this might be interesting to share here.

About World Radio Day from UNESCO

Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out the widest audience means radio can shape a society’s experience of diversity, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs, viewpoints and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations.

If you’re wondering how to support your local radio stations, consider donating or becoming a member. Volunteering is also a great to support radio stations. I’ve been getting involved at KOOP 91.7 FM here in Austin and it’s been an incredibly fulfilling experience so far.

I am a huge fan of all things radio and while I may not listen to as much radio now as I used to, I believe it still serve an important role in our society at large. Though radio and podcasting are not the same, I firmly believe that the current podcast ecosystem would not be thriving without radio and the continuation of radio in our current media world. Radio also continues to play a vital role for musicians not only as a source of revenue, but as a means of sharing their music with others.
