Love Birbigs, love the pod
This show got me through the pandemic and the creative depths that came with it. Love hearing comedians et al talking shop and the craft of joke writing and comedy. Don’t stop the ride, Mike!
Thoughtful, meaningful, funny, educational!
I love this podcast. Mike Birbiglia, it turns out, is a fantastic podcast host. What sets him apart is that it feels to me like he is really listening to his guests, not just thinking about what he’s going to say next. His admiration and respect for his guests is obvious and genuine, and there are some truly great conversations on here. I would recommend specific people/episodes but there are so many good ones! Also, I have learned an absurd and delightful amount about comedy writing and performance, and about creativity itself. Even though I’m not a comedian, I’m getting a lot out of this. Highly recommend!

Taylor Tomlinson!!! Can’t wait to see ya at dc improv soon!!! Also if James acaster is a nice guy, have him on the podcast!!! You’re my 2 fave comedians and you’re so different and I’d love to hear you talk about your styles!!! Updating this since Get On Your Knees came out — it is imperative to national security that Jacqueline Novak gets on WIO as soon as physically possible.
Ep 121 with Maddie Wiener
This episode is one example of why I love this podcast. To me, the process of going between having an initial funny thought to a finished bit is a blackbox. This episode gives a peek into that box during their “working it out” back and forth.
Hi Mabel!
Great pod! The focus on breaking down bits encourages new conversations and gives a new angle on well known guests. I love the most interesting neighbor question - have started asking friends that!
I love this podcast
I just finished listening to the Jim Gaffigan podcast. It was hysterical but It was normal. It was normal folks talking to each other. There was no dirty language— just nothing that I had to hide from my mom. Has she been listening with me—of course my mom‘s been dead for 20 years but that’s another story! It was a great great podcast. I loved it very much and I can’t wait to hear another one .
A delight
I love listening to Mike talk about his comedy process and asking other comics to do the same. His combination of thoughtfulness and sincere layered thinking is a true delight for me!
Great for background laughs
I’m a painter and spend hours and hours working. It’s been great to have this on while I work for some laughs.
Well done Mike!
I love this podcast! In a crazy world that can get you down sometimes it’s therapeutic to just laugh and enjoy the creative process
Comforting, Funny, Introspective
My favorite episodes are the ones where Birbigs and guest actually work it out. I love being invited into the development process. My favorite episodes so far are the ones with Ira Glass, Bill Hader, and Rachel Bloom. Thank you for sharing, to all the guests, all you wonderfully talented and generous artists. Note to Birbigs: you can tell the people in your life, cherish you. 5 stars
Delightful
I’ve been enjoying Mike Birbiglia’s comedy since high school (I’m 35). Listening to him and Pete Holmes working out bits is delightfully entertaining. Thank you Mike!
Jo Firestone
Favorite ep
Great listen.
Telling my friends and enemies about how much I enjoy this podcast. It always makes me laugh out loud on my little walks. The Jo Firestone episode is my favorite.
One of my faves!
I’ve always enjoyed watching Mike as a performer, but this podcast makes it clear he’s not just a great comedian — he’s a generous one. Love getting the inside look into the thought process and craft!
My favorite show
Never miss an episode!
Genuine Conversations
Great podcast Mike! I love how you and Sarah swapped shows. Glad you are friends & thanks for sharing your experiences with us.
Amazing!!
I discovered Mike through the Chinwag podcast when he was a guest (also highly recommend that pod). So happy to have a new great podcast! Very entertaining and such a wonderful listen! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Pete Holmes!
Thank you for once again sharing the joy and brilliance that is Pete Holmes! We enjoyed learning more about your shared history and obvious affection for each other.
What’s Not to Like
Makes me laugh & think while I’m at work. No reason not to like listening.

Mike, I love love love your podcast. Saw Old Man and the Pool live in LA and have become a massive fan of yours. But the nuggets of wisdom you and Pete just dropped are on another level. I have a list of life-changing podcast episodes and this just made it. — The deep one liners were endless: — Project your shame on me and laugh at it — If you’re not telling secrets, then who cares — I could share my winning stories, but what good is that for you? — I do the show for free, they pay me for the vulnerability hangover This is the life of artistry that I crave, and I appropriate the guideposts you’re providing.
Brilliant
Mike Birbiglia is a brilliant, heartfelt and hilarious storyteller. His podcast is a gift. I have learned so much about the art and science of comedy and storytelling, I laugh outloud every episode and lead a more joyful life for having listened to this podcast!! Thank you Mike and everyone who makes this podcast possible. Every episode is amazing, but a couple of favorites include: Pete Holmes, Jimmy Fallon, Zara Garg, Atsuko Okatsuka.
Best craft-talk podcast for creatives
There a lot of podcasts with comedians discussing the nuts and bolts of their craft; Working it Out is the best I’ve heard. But the shop talk is good for any creative discipline because it does such a good job of examining how to present the human condition to an audience. There is a lot of universal wisdom for creative people in these episodes. Every episode is good, but new listeners could do a lot worse than starting with ep 115 with Pete Holmes.
Your Next Class President
My kid is running for class president, and is up against a “frenemy”. When she asked for advice on what to say to them on their upcoming Election Day, I suggested she recommend this podcast about comedians getting together to discuss joke-writing. Why? Because Mike is a wonderful human being. I’ve loved each and every special, and I’ve had the good fortune to attend a few and meet him after the show. Just like this podcast, he actually takes the time to talk. Episodes to checkout: anything with Pete Holmes, John Mulaney, Gary Gulman, Taylor Tomlinson, Hasan Minhaj…
Thankyou Mike and guests!!
I’m obsessed. I listened to a lot a lot of your early episodes, stopped for whatever reason, life. Now coming back to it, the wisdom from all of these people, with the depth of your slow round with comedy and laughs throughout— it’s everything. One of my favorite podcasts! The only thing I don’t like is that I will catchup to where I left off and will have to wait for new releases and that will be a sad day. So grateful, keep going please!! Also— Mike genuinely cares about his guests. He watches/reads their stuff and has thoughtful antedates, questions and comments. It’s quite heartwarming. Haha obsessed, I already told you Pete homes stop interrupting people on your podcasts and here. It’s sooooo hard to listen to
