Tell Us About Your Misadventure!

About

Life happens when you least expect it - sometimes in the form of a sudden medical crisis, sometimes through a journey that takes a terrifying wrong turn, and often when we are simply trying to figure out who we are. Hosted by David Brown, Life by Misadventure is an independent podcast dedicated to exploring the messy, unpolished, and profound truths of the human experience.

About the show

Every episode of Life by Misadventure centres on one guest and one defining life story. Rather than chasing sensational headlines or rushing toward a neat, tidy moral, these thoughtful long-form conversations give people the space to talk about what happened when their plans fell apart. The show explores how individuals navigate catastrophic setbacks and unexpected reinventions—whether that means surviving unexpected geopolitical danger abroad, learning to live with the lasting changes left behind by major brain surgery, getting stranded deep in a remote desert landscape, or rebuilding an entire life after enduring war and displacement. It is not just about the shock of the initial event; it is about what happened next, how people adapted, and what they carried forward.

What you'll discover

  • How ordinary people summon extraordinary resilience in the face of sudden physical or mental health crises.
  • Candid discussions on identity, growing up caught between worlds, and breaking free from difficult generational cycles.
  • Honest explorations of grief, mortality, and the heavy conversations we so often avoid having until it is too late.
  • Reflections on the realities of modern work, creative chaos, and navigating changing professional landscapes.
  • The strange, funny, and deeply humbling detours that ultimately shape our sense of purpose.
  • Deep dives into mental health, recovery, and the difficult work of rebuilding confidence after a complete breakdown.
  • Real stories from people who chose to look back at their misadventures and find meaning in the mess.

Founding Partner | Orion Studios

I’m a podcast host, producer and digital media strategist based in the UK. I’m the founder of Futurehand Media, a consultancy I started in 2005, and the founder of Orion Studios, a digital media and production studio in Tunbridge Wells.

Most of my work is built around real conversations delivered through podcasts, interviews, films, client stories (testimonials) and/or brand content. The format changes, but the aim is usually the same: help people and organisations turn ideas, experience and expertise into content that feels useful and human.

Before moving deeper into audio and video, I spent years working for startups focusing on digital marketing and analytics, including leading teams of digital marketing data analysts, which gave me a practical view of what works, what doesn’t, and why so much content fails to connect. I’m interested in simple systems, strong ideas and making things that serve a real audience.

I’ve also worked as a semi-professional photographer, which still shapes how I think about visual storytelling. There’s a big difference between something that simply looks “fine” and something that feels intentional and I try to incorporate that into all my work.

I’m originally from Memphis, Tennessee, and I’ve lived in the UK since 1999, so I tend to bring a mix of Southern storytelling and British pragmatism to the work. I like honest conversations, useful media, and helping people communicate something that actually matters.

I believe the best way to become successful is to help other people succeed. Success isn’t a zero-sum game, and I enjoy seeing good people do well. If there’s something I can help with, send me a message.
