Ep. 7: The Reflector Energy Type
Reflectors are the rarest energy type in Human Design, making up only about 1% of the population. With all nine energy centres undefined, they are incredibly receptive to the people, energy, and environments around them, giving them a unique ability to reflect back what is happening in a group, relationship, or community.
In this episode, we’re breaking down Reflector energy in a simple, practical way, including:
- What makes Reflectors so rare and different from every other energy type
- Why Reflectors are often described as mirrors or barometers for their communities
- What it means to have all nine energy centres undefined
- Why Reflectors can feel like different versions of themselves around different people and environments
- Their strategy of waiting a lunar cycle for big decisions
- Why surprise can signal alignment and disappointment can tell you something is off
- How environment and the people around them can profoundly affect a Reflector
- Why consistency isn’t necessarily the goal for Reflectors
- How to support a Reflector partner, friend, or child
- The importance of giving Reflectors time, space, and permission to change
- A simple experiment for noticing what belongs to you and what you might be sampling from the people around you
If you’re a Reflector, you may have spent a lot of your life wondering why you feel so different, why you need more time to make decisions, why your energy changes so much depending on who you’re with, or why advice that seems to work for everyone else just doesn’t seem to work for you.
Maybe you don’t need to fix that changeability and sensitivity. Maybe they’re part of what makes you uniquely equipped to experience, observe, and reflect the world around you.

Sandy: Welcome to Human Design Field Notes. This is where we learn human design in a way that's simple, fun, and actually useful in real life. The kind of thing you can try for yourself, talk about with your girlfriends, and before long, you'll want to know everyone's chart. And I'm not just teaching it, I'm testing it too. I'm rebuilding my coaching business using my own human design and I'll be sharing the field notes as I go. The experiments, the insights, the wins, the mistakes, and probably a few things we can all have a good laugh about. Because human design isn't meant to be stared at on a chart. It's meant to be lived. I'm your host, Sandy Connery. Let's see where this takes us. Welcome to episode seven. This is the fifth and the final episode in our series on human design energy types. And today we're talking about reflectors. just as a quick reminder in case you're popping into this episode mid-series, there are five different energy types in human design: manifestors, generators, manifesting generators. projectors and today's topic reflectors. So your energy type is really the starting point for understanding your own human design. It describes how your energy naturally interacts with the world and gives you some clues about how you're designed to move through life, make decisions, and interact with other people. So today, as I said, we're talking about reflectors, and we're gonna be covering what make reflectors, what makes reflectors so unique and so uncommon, what it can feel like to move through life as a reflector, where reflectors can struggle, what it's like to be in a relationship with one, and at the end, we'll take all of this information out into the field with a simple experiment for reflectors to help them notice how just how much their environment actually affects them. Okay, let's go. So in the population, reflectors are one percent or less. There are not many reflectors among us. I personally have never met a reflector, and I am lots of my teachers and people that I follow have also said they've never even done a a reading for a reflector, even after years of re reading people. So very, very rare. So the purpose of a reflector is To sample and reflect what is happening around them. So they are extraordinarily open to the people, to energy and environments, which means they kind of act like a mirror for us for the health of our collective. They're kind of mirroring what is going on, and that is why they're called reflectors. So in human design, generators and manifesting generators build. Manifestors initiate, projectors guide, and reflectors evaluate. They give us a unique perspective on what's working, what isn't, and what the environment itself is producing. So what's so rare about a reflector or what makes a reflector reflector on their body graph is that all nine energy centers in their body graph are completely empty. They're just There's nothing colored in. They are what's called undefined. They have no defined channels and no energy centers. And if you want to know a little bit more about that, then please go back and listen to episode two, where we talk about what those squares and lines are on your human design chart. so reflectors are just these clear, beautiful vessels that reflect back to us. So Because in their their all their energy centers are undefined, they're unlike any any other energy type. So there isn't any kind of consistent energy set point and they're incredibly receptive to what is around them. So they're constantly sort of sampling energies and experiencing themselves differently depending on who they're with and where they are. And that's what gives them this like remarkable capacity to reflect back to the rest of us. reflectors are sometimes called lunar beings because the moon plays such an important role in their decision making. And I'm this is called authority in human design. And we're gonna do a whole series on different authorities, but because This is so unique and such a big part of who reflectors are. I do want to just touch on it very quickly. So for big decision, reflectors are encouraged to wait through a full lunar cycle or around 28 days. That gives them time to experience the decision from different perspectives rather than rushing to a quick answer. And just know if you are a reflector, you are not designed to make quick answers. quick decisions and do not let yourself be rushed into those decisions. But again, we will cover that more in the upcoming series. So when we talk about the aura of a reflector, it's very receptive and sampling. And I know I've used that word a few times already, but rather than being bringing in consistent energy qualities of its own, it takes in and samples everybody else's of the people around and the environments. So the or it can be described as gentle, nonintrusive, accepting, and there's this beautiful openness to a reflector, which can make can make them seem like not seem, they are, can make them incredibly attuned to subtle shifts in people, groups, and environments that they're moving through. So if we talk about some of the natural qualities of a reflector, intuition. So reflectors are Highly intuitive, they are highly perceptive and highly sensitive. Again, if you look at their graph, their body graph, all of their energy centers are open. They can take in and amplify all different types of energy. So they are taking in and sampling so much of what's happening around them, they have this unusual, unusual ability to step back and see what's really going on. Reflectors are incredible observers. So they can be really great facilitators, noticing what's working within a group, a committee, or a team, a family, a f household, and what isn't. They can see where someone or something could change or improve. And because they aren't bringing the same fixed, defined energy to every situation, they sometimes offer a surprisingly non-judgmental perspective. They're also described as fluid. There's a fluidity to reflectors. Their sense of themselves may shift and change depending on who they're with or where they are. And it's like a chameleon matching its colors to its environment. And this doesn't mean that they're like unreliable or less than. They're just they're just fluid in how they experience and express themselves because they're constantly sampling energy around them and reflecting it back. So to give you a concrete example, if there was at a reflector at a very high, loud, high-energy party, a reflector might really surprise you and be really social and outgoing and animated and talkative and telling jokes. But if you put that some same person with a quiet friend on a Sunday morning for coffee, They could be calm and introspective and not really want to talk. At work, this same person could be super ambitious and fast moving when they're around a really driven, ambitious team. But when they're by themselves and working, they might be more slower and more contemplative as they work. So none of these versions of the same person is the real one. You know, that's what's so interesting about reflectors. Instead of like, if you are a reflector, if you're like, Who am I? Like, which one is actually me? it's more like who do you become in this environment? They're all you. You are a mirror of us. they're also described as a barometer. So they can be described as the heart or the barometer of a community because they can reflect something back that could be true for a workplace or you know, a group project or something. They reflect back. back about the energy and the health of that group group itself. So sensitivity. So underneath all of these different beautiful aspects, they're really, really sensitive beings. And reflectors can notice and feel an enormous amount from you. I as I said, I don't know any reflectors, and I wanted to I don't have any stories about reflectors. I can't give you examples. so what does any good researcher do? she goes to Reddit. So I went to Reddit and read, it was actually really interesting. I read all these threads on on reflectors. Reflectors talking about relationships, what you know, what it's like to be a reflector, or or people who've had reflectors as friends. And what they were describing was people who had reflectors as friends, they described how different they felt when they were around that friend. That friend just seemed to know exactly what to say. there were so many examples of people saying, like, I was going through a rough breakup or a a difficult time in my life, and that reflector friend just said the right thing that needed to be noticed. Like what I couldn't see, the one the one story I'm thinking about in particular is someone was having a really rough time with their with their with their partner, with their boyfriend or girlfriend, I can't remember which. And they just didn't know if they should stay in the relationship. And that reflector friend said one thing to them and reflected back the issue and that person saw it for the first time and and ended up ending the relationship and it's all good. But it's like so many said they just love the insights that their reflector friends bring to their to their relationship. Okay, let's talk about strategy. So, as you've probably figured out over the last couple of episodes, that every different energy type in human design has a strategy that will bring in the best, most aligned opportunities for that person. The strategy explains how you move through life with less resistance with and more ease, right? So it's about working with your natural energy instead of against it. So a reflector strategy. is to wait a lunar cycle. Or some people have also renamed that to wait to be included. So for reflectors, so much of this comes back to time and environment. You're the reflectors taking in so much and sampling what's happening around them, they don't necessarily need to jump into something or know immediately what to think about it. Reflectors need to give themselves space to experience. Notice how they feel in different environments around different people and over time. So when it comes to really big decisions, so most people's strategy is really helps them know how to make a decision. So for all of you out there who are generators and you're sacral generators, it is a gut instant knowing. It is a response in the lower belly that that you can feel physically in your body. For reflectors, they are designed to wait a 28 days or a whole lunar cycle. That's a very different pace than what the world teaches us about, right? Like most people don't take that time when they're making making decisions. The world is typically saying, like, come on, decide, give me an answer. And what your strategy, the way that you are actually wired for reflectors, the way they're wired is just Give me some time. So often you don't need to wait the full twenty-eight days for small decisions, like for big major life things, the marriage, the job, the PhD you have to move across the country for, the big business decision, those things give yourself time to decide. But if you're just talking about like what to pick up at the grocery store for dinner, you don't need to make you don't need to wait twenty-eight days, obviously. And socially reflectors may also find that things work better when they allow themselves to be recognized and included. So rather than forcing their way, much like a projector, rather than forcing their way into people or groups or different environments that don't feel right, it's best for them just to wait to be included. All right, so now let's talk about the signature theme. So again, every energy type has a strategy, and they also have a signature theme. For a reflector, their signature theme, which means what they need to look for or how they feel when they are in alignment, their their signature theme is is surprise or delight. Surprise looks like life is unfolding in ways that they couldn't ever have predicted or imagined, but just somehow feels like these unexpected turns just feel so right. There can be a sense of like wonder, delight of just watching life reveal itself rather than to control what it's doing. It's the feeling that life has turned out even better or more interesting than anything that they could have planned. So when the when the reflector is like, wow, amaze, surprise, that is things are going well. Things are in alignment. When reflectors are out of alignment. They're not self-theme, their indication that they're off track, off out of alignment, their not self-theme is disappointment. So that can show up as disappointment in themselves or in other people or just simply in the world or society at large. And part of that disappointment can come from just being so sensitive to their environment and they can see what potential something has. And when the reality around them continually falls short of what they believe it could be, that's when the disappointment sets in. So a reflector might notice if they stay in an environment in an environment that for too long that isn't good for them, or if they try to rush a really big important decision, or if they try to be someone, like try to fix their identity to be really a consistent version, which society really wants to see. When you try to do that, that is when you're gonna feel disappoint disappointment. For reflectors in alignment, surprise looks like, I never saw that coming. And out of alignment is disappointment, which is like, I thought this could be so much more, disappointment. So let's cover when reflectors can kind of get stuck. The first is the environment. So because reflectors again are so open to what's around them, being in an environment that isn't right can feel particularly draining or chaotic. The people they're around really do matter. So if you're continually surrounded by people who leave you feeling depleted or anxious or heavy or bad about yourself, then that is worth paying to paying attention to and making some changes. The second is trying to match everyone else's energy. So Reflector takes in and amplifies energy around them again because in their energy centers, they don't have anything defined. So they're just open and receiving everyone else's energy and amplifying that. So they might be a little bit confused. They might feel like they have a lot of energy, and then they realize once they leave the situation or the group of people or person that they don't have that energy. So they need to recognize your own you weight. unique way of moving through life and that that energy they feel is really amplified from the people around them. And I do think this is this is true for most energy types, other than gen generators and many gens because they have their own energy source because their sacral is defined. all the other like the projectors too, like the another place they get stuck is trying to match a generator energy because our society, our world is built for energy for generating generator energy. The third is the pressure to be consistent, right? This is a big one. So you you're gonna feel different with different people in different places or even different times of the month. So if you have been taught that you should always know exactly who you are and you're gonna need to show up the same way every day and that very like feeling that variability can really make you wonder like what's wrong with me? Like why don't I why can't I be like them or her? human design is so amazing for this because it really gives you a different possibility that maybe this changeability isn't something that you need to fix. Like that is what makes you so beautiful and unique and valued in our society. And finally, a challenge that reflectors can experience is taking on what belongs to other people. So they're so receptive. And you might find yourself absorbing emotions or fears or worries or anxiety or pressures, stress of the people around you and experiencing them as your own. so part of this, like recognizing if you are a reflector or if you know one, part of this growth is to actually ask yourself, like, what is actually mine? Am I sampling something from the person or am I actually? feeling it. And with human design, like it's so hard to understand what other energy types, what their lives, what it actually feels like. and I the only way I can relate to this is I have an undefined emotional center. the solar plexus center is undefined for me, which means I can feel and amplify other people's emotions. So it's important and that's true for any of you. If you look at your chart And you have an undefined center, you are going to pick up, sample, and amplify whatever that center represents. So in emotions, in the emotional center, I can amplify those. And it feels like I'm really feeling that stress when it's actually not mine. And the moment I leave the situation, I can go right back to my neutral state. So I think it's really important for reflectors, but all of us who have open centers. to see to recognize like that question like is this actually mine or is it somebody else's? So let's talk now about being in relationship with a reflector So reflectors are so, so sensitive to the energy around them that they would they really appreciate a partner who takes responsibility for their own energy rather than bringing chaos and drama to drama to the relationship. So and of course the environment matters, as we've said. Where where you spend time together can almost be as important as what you're actually doing together. So a peaceful home. A hike, a walk in nature, or simply being somewhere that feels good can make a huge difference to that reflector. reflectors also need time to be themselves, including that time to change. So they may not show up the same way every single day. And that is not something that needs to be fixed. That is their superpower. Having stability in the relationship can give them the safety to experience that natural variability without feeling like they've got to fix themselves or match, you know, match what you expect them to be. So recognize that they are going to have be very different in different environments or different people. And most importantly, if you are in a relationship with a reflector, don't rush them. Reflectors operate on a very, very different decision-making timeline, especially as we said with the big, big decisions. So patience can be one of the greatest gifts that you bring to a relationship with a reflector. Give them time. If possible, give them a full twenty eight days. They are not gonna know in an especially if you're a generator or a manigan, they're not gonna know as quickly as you know what the right decision is for them. And I do want to talk about kids because I think this is just I think it's just fascinating when we talk about human design in children. So a reflector child may be incredibly observant, super, super perceptive, but not consistent in personality from day to day. So they might be like really active and talkative and moving with some friends, and then they may the next day just want to be alone and draw in their room. So don't demand or tell them t that they have to f have this fixed identity. Like don't label them like you're such an extrovert or you love soccer. Why don't you want to do it today? you're not shy. Yesterday you did want to do this and now you don't want to do this. Like just leave them some room. Like it's it a more appropriate statement to the child would be like, interesting. This is who you are today in this environment with these people. Like observe that. See how they change. Watch how they adapt to who they're around. They're gonna gravitate always to places and people that make them feel stable and comfortable. And having like their own cozy space of their own where they can just retreat to and decompress is incredibly important. So you'll you may notice that these reflector kids are constantly changing their room around or their decor, just Changing their s surroundings until they feel right. So let's take this out into the field. So if you are a reflector, here are some tips for you on really accepting the energy type and working with it. So the biggest thing to understand about yourself is learning to sample energy without believing you have to keep it or become it. It's not yours, right? When you're around different people, you're gonna experience things differently. The emotions, the pressure, the stress, the energy, and it can feel really real in the body because in that moment it is real. You are actually feeling it. You are actually experiencing it. But your experiment now is to learn to notice. Same as what we just talked about with the the kids, the experiment is to notice the difference between like experiencing something and owning it. Is this actually mine or am I sampling what's happening around me? That is a huge insight to have. Also, I just wanna point out to all you reflectors, All 1% of you, there's not many of you. And if you think about it, chances are throughout your life you've never met another reflector. Like statistically speaking, you've probably never met another reflector. You have probably spent your entire life wondering why are you so different and why traditional advice that we all receive as we grow up, you know, like make quick decisions, you gotta be this way or you gotta be that way, you gotta be consistent, stop being so sensitive. All of that doesn't work for you. You might watch everyone around you and life might look so much easier for them, and you just feel so different and you're so confused by yourself. Like what's wrong with me? You might always be asking what's wrong with me. And again, this is where human design can be so helpful because it explains why you are that way. You have no defined energy centers. So you're a reflector and you're not failing at anything. You don't need to be consistent consistent. You should not be consistent. Consistency wasn't the assignment ever. It you're here to experience, observe, and to reflect back. to help society, to help your group of friends, to help your family. And your sensitivity and your observational skills are not something that needs to be fixed or to overcome. So that might be like a huge relief to know that if you've spent your life wondering why you're different. And I always I also want to cover sleep because that is a part of the traditional human design teaching. And for reflectors, again, it's very similar to projectors. They should go to bed before they're tired, give them time to let go of any other and extra energy or someone else's energy that they may have picked up throughout the day in order for them to fall asleep. And also it is said. That because their aura is like sampling all the time, it is best if they sleep alone because that aura can disrupt other people's sleep. Don't know. Never slept with a reflector. my god, did I actually just say that? Okay, let's wrap that up. Thank you for listening to the do the episode on reflectors.
